Book Description
Oregon lawyer Babara Holloway has a reputation for taking on the most difficult cases -- and winning them. But even she can't begin to anticipate the bizarre twists waiting ahead.
The large retainer offered by a client who asks for complete anonymity is not the only thing that intrigues Barbara Holloway. The defendant, Carol Fredricks, is a gifted young pianist charged with killing the manager of a piano bar. But Carol is as much of a mystery as the details of the murder for which she is accused. She can't remember anything about her life before the age of eight, and she has been having haunting nightmares about a woman she cannot identify.
Before long Barbara becomes convinced that her client is not only innocent, but is being framed by an enemy who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried. And as she unravels the stunning trail of deception, hatred and a remarkable abiding love that holds the key to the mystery of Carol Fredricks, Barbara discovers that the unbidden truth may just damn them both.

A Good Read.......2007-01-03
As always, Kate Wilhelm write books that hold your attention span and get you involved with her characters. If you haven't started the Barbara Halloway series, give it a try.
My kind of mystery; I'm HOOKED!.......2006-02-19
Just discovered this author... I'm looking forward to more in the "Barbara Holloway" series.
Kate Wilhelm has a clever-imaginative writing style and kept me spellbound; I really didn't want the story to end. I'd love to follow Carol's life further. The twists and turns in this story were most unusual. I was just surprised at the culprit! I really enjoy a story that keeps me entranced to the end. The inclusion of Carol's childhood amnesia and her life as a supposed orphan were just fascinating. Excellent!
Wilhelm Wins Again!.......2005-08-24
Kate Wilhelm once again creates a winner in the Barbara Holloway series. An artful mix of law, suspense and suprises, The Unbidden Truth is a great summer read. She uses unusual and surprising characters to build a credible, enjoyable story using old and new characters. If you haven't gotten hooked on the Holloway series, you are really missing out!
Deception and Lies.......2004-09-28
Oregon attorney, Barbara Holloway is retained to defend a gifted young pianist, Carol Fredericks who is being framed for the murder of the manager of the nightclub bar where she works. Carol has amnesia of the first eight years of her life, the life she had with the parents she does not remember who were killed in a fiery automobile crash where she was also severely injured. As the trial goes on, memories start to come back to Carol or Carrie as she likes to be called, to cumulate in a dramatic climax.
The start of the story was extremely fast-paced and really drew the reader right into the story. An intriguing, realistic primary and secondary cast made this book a pleasure to read. The middle of the story dragged a little as a courtroom set thriller sometimes does. Not every witness is fascinating or riveting. As the story started to unfold the pace picked up once again. There were quite a few red herrings, but the plot was not overly complex and it was not too hard to figure out the culprit.
As though you're reading about people you know.......2004-09-18
Kate Wilhelm's gift is to write so well that when you read these novels, you feel as though you know the people in them, or are getting to know them in real life, and just happen to be reading an especially well-written newspaper story about a crime. There are all the details you would expect, and all the background.
Barbara Holloway, a lawyer who wishes neither to act like one nor make money like one, holds office hours in a cafe. A lot of people who would never be seen walking into a law office will come sit at her cafe table. So she gets the odd cases. Odd, but even though they aren't things that happen in everyday life, Wilhelm makes them believable.
It's best to read the series in order - I'll wait while you order the other books :-) - because there are background details about our protagonist's life that you need to know. Who is this guy Darren and his kid Todd, anyway?? What's going on between Barbara and her father Frank? You can read this book without that background, but it's more fun if you do know it.
This particular book has a complex plot, spanning not only the width of the country but parts of Mexico as well, and spanning several decades of time. A young woman with childhood amnesia accidentally discovers that she is a piano prodigy - shortly before being arrested for murder. Uncovering the real murderer involves digging into everything from illegal border crossings to the Federal Witness Protection Program. The publisher's blurbs and back cover could sum up the plot for you, so I'll skip that. Instead let me mention a couple of details I particularly enjoyed. The piano playing, of course - if you are familiar with classical music and jazz standards, you will find them running through your head as you read about Carrie's piano playing in the lounge. And related to that, the discussion of people who have the talent of seeing or hearing something in their heads, so that they can practice their talent, be it music or otherwise, even without the proper tools. The insight into the minds that have this talent is very interesting; part of the discussion about it compares it to riding a bicycle - the muscle memory that says you never really forget how, once you've learned.
Carrie remembers details about her childhood that most people think are fantasies - who, for example, would think that Aunt Loony and Uncle Silly are real, rather than imaginary playmates? The exposition as we uncover the family that has been denied to her is great.
I suspect we'll be hearing more from the women's club that brings Barbara this case. Some of the characters introduced in this book will probably become part of the continuing cast. I will be looking forward to the next one!

This Audiofy audiobook chip packs a full 11 hour reading of "The Unbidden Truth," narrated by Anna Fields, on a tiny memory card. A single Audiofy audiobook chip, hardly larger than a stamp, holds a complete digital audiobook, and saves the last listening position automatically, unlike CDs. With an SD memory card slot or low-cost adapter - like those for digital cameras - this Audiofy audiobook chip can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) or transferred to Apple iPod media players. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above)... When a well-bred client hands Barbara Holloway a large retainer and asks for complete anonymity, the Oregon attorney is both intrigued and suspicious. The woman, a respected music professor and member of a group that sponsors worthy causes involving women, wants Barbara to defend Carol Fredricks, a gifted young pianist who stands accused of murdering the manager of a piano bar. Not long ago Barbara heard Carol play, and that is enough to convince her to take the case. But now the questions are coming faster than the answers. And how can Barbara explain the oddly incomplete picture she gets of the young woman herself? Soon Barbara is convinced that her client is not only innocent but being framed by ruthless foes who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried. However, proving the case and keeping her client safe will require every drop of Barbara's notoriously fierce determination to get at the truth, an unbidden truth that may just damn them both.

Not Worth The Effort.......2004-10-15
This book, while keeping with the storyline of Hunter, is written in such a way as that by the time your able to decipher what the author is trying to say, its simply not worth the effort.
i can't really see the point of this book. It has information that the Hunter-Creed books explain in greater detail and in easier-to-understand terms.
As it is, the author who wrote this book (or, atleast the point of view that it was supposed to be written in) was insane, or was at least considered insane.
So, if you want to read a book written by someone who is insane, this would be a good place to start.
Apocrypha Now.......2002-03-30
Well, I enjoyed reading it... but the deliberate use of a raving psycho and his psuedo intellectual fan boy to deliver these revelations made it less valuable. An average Hunter would probably want to hunt this guy down not for supernatural reasons but because he is clearly mental and a danger to society. The psychotic ramblings aside the book laid out some interesting theories, and some connections to the Exalted Gameline world which are cool. All in all, it was no Book of Nod.
Hunter Apocrypha.......2000-10-18
For those of you who play any White Wolf role playing games this source book is a must. In it the writer reveals both where the Hunters gain thier powers and where the metaplot is going in all of the World of Darkness games.
I was impressed with both the symbols used to describe the hunters mission and the powers they are granted. The most revealing thing that this book gives us is what happens when the Hunters overstep thier bounds and revel in thier power.
Book Description
An Exciting New Approach to Regaining Health Without Surgery!
Fact: By the time they reach menopause 40 percent of American women have at least one uterine fibroid; 600,000 women are diagnosed each year.
Fact: Fibroids are the leading cause of hysterectomy, the second most common surgical procedure performed on women.
Fact: Natural, holistic medicine can heal fibroids without invasive surgery.
Fibroid tumors, while usually benign, can swell a woman's uterus to the size of a basketball, frequently causing heavy menstrual bleeding, cramping, bladder infections, and even infertility. Most doctors recommend surgery as the only answer. Now this innovative holistic program brings new hope for a surgery-free life to millions of American women.
Dr. Allan Warshowsky combines traditional Western medicine and holistic science to cure not just the fibroid condition but also the underlying imbalances and systemic dysfunctions that can cause fibroids. With an exciting program of diet, exercise, supplements, herbs, and mind/spirit work, Dr. Warshowsky shows fibroid sufferers how to become the strong, healthy women they deserve to be.
Customer Reviews:
Excelent.......2006-10-05
Excelent book. I was looking for a book about fibroids after 6 doctors recommend surgery (Hysterectomy), and I was glad I found this book. It explain more about our bodys and what increases our chances with fibroids than any other reference material I came across so far. I was almost given up, but I decide to keep fight and changed some important things (like food and relaxation). I have an herb garden now. A must have for anyone who have to face the problem of fibroids.
I love this book.......2006-09-23
I was resigned to what my doctor told me was the only alternative-surgery. This book gave me hope and totally changed the coarse of my life. I learned not only about my fibroid condition, but about nutrition and a healthy lifestyle generally. It brought me to yoga, which I'm now absolutely hooked on. It turned my fibroid misery into a kind a blessing in disguise. I wish I had read this book years ago, but, better late than never. One year after deciding not to have surgery because of reading this book, the fibroid is still there, but I'm starting to reread Warshowsky's book to get reinspired for the year ahead, and rededicate myself to the ideas inside.
Healing Fibroids.......2005-10-10
It's a wonderful compilation of information about the female body and fibroids in specific. It's also a great inspiration for getting healthier and finding alternative ways to deal with fibroids yourself and with your physician.
Interesting book.......2005-09-11
I'm learning a lot with this book. There are some good advices for all the women in general not only for the one's with fibroids
problems.
Many options to choose from.......2005-07-15
This is by far one of, if not the best book on dealing with fibroids naturally...the list is endless(and sometimes confusing) about herbal teas and vitamins...but definitely an eye opener in the world of choices..for those of us women who want surgery as an absolute last resort, and who want to shrink or stop growth or even prevent reoccurence of fibroids..this book details not only with holistic and natural approaches to dealing with fibroids, it also gets to the root of the problem, liver detox, hormone imbalance, ect..and explains how surgery is not always the answer as even after surgery fibroids can return...Dr. Warshowsky gets to the nitty gritty as to why the system(organs) are off balance as to create these little buggers in the first place...not saying this will be the cure for all but look into it and try some of these natural healing ways...

gift for father's day.......2007-07-16
I don't know much about this product as it was a gift and not mine, but dad said he loved it (then again he is required to!).
Useful Book on Japanese Style Cooking.......2007-07-12
This is a good book on basics of Japanese Cooking. Be aware that it is a very small book with few recipes, so I would not really call it a cookbook, more of a reference really. What there is of it is enjoyable.
Wonderful, Easy Cookbook for Beginners.......2007-06-17
What can I say? This cookbook is fabulous. There are full color photos for every single recipe! The recipes are simple, easy to follow and best of all, delicious! This is easy Japanese homecooking at your fingertips.
Wonderful cookbook; cd we pls have a metric version?.......2007-06-01
I agree with all the reviewers who gave this wonderful book five stars. I am already familiar with Japanese cooking techniques, but still found myself silently thanking Ms Harumi (and her editor?) for the wonderful job they did giving really clear and well thought-out instructions, which ought to help even a rookie to turn out the dishes in the way the author intended.
In fact, the only reason why I am giving this 4 stars, instead of 5, is that I do think -- and cook -- in metric, and this cookbook (well, at least the copy I bought in Singapore), uses American/ Imperial measures such as cups and ounces. But these recipes are well worth the effort of converting the measures... so do swing over to buying this book if you think it sounds appealing! If you are used to eating Japanese food cooked by Japanese people, the conversions shouldn't be a problem at all as you will be able to "guesstimate" the right measurements with just a bit of practice.
An easy introduction to Japanese homestyle cooking.......2007-05-16
Harumi's recipes are just the thing if you'd like to try your hand at some simple Japanese dishes. Her directions are clear and most of the ingredients are not too hard to find. If you try her recipes for green beans with ground meat or green beans with black sesame sauce, for instance, you will have created dishes that are simple, pleasing, and, well, Japanese. And if you've ever been to Japan and had that delicious pancake called okonomiyaki, then longed to reproduce it, Harumi gives you a pretty good recipe for making it right at home. Her variations on miso soup are good, too. I am less tempted by the "fusion" type dishes like "tofu with basil and gorgonzola dressing," which seem a bit odd to me. And the book does, annoyingly, lack an index, although it has a good glossary. I haven't tried all of her recipes, but my favorite so far is her easy and homey take on gyoza (dumplings). And although she has some recipes for making sushi, I'm leaving that job to the excellent sushi chefs in Portland (Maine).

A Good Read.......2007-03-20
This is a good, quick, read. We're going to adopt a blind dog from a shelter, so it was helpful to read about the amazing abilities the blind dogs have. It was also a good book for our kids, age 9 and 13.
Well-titled!.......2006-11-04
Excellent choice of stories; would love to know there are more planned (perhaps a series of such books, like "Chicken Soup..." series). My own wonder dog, Wiggles Blue Heeler, and I have our own story to tell that we are living!

American Miners' Carbide Lamps.......2003-05-13
This book, which was published in 1987, contains a wealth of information on carbide lamps. Carbide lamps were the main source of illumination for miners from about 1900 to 1950. They were cheap, reliable, and, best of all, they produced a lot of light! These lamps were also used by a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters, fishermen, and cave explorers.
This book lists the many brands of carbide lamps that were produced and has photographs and drawings of many of them. Of special interest to the collector, Appendix A gives a list of United States Carbide Lamp patents, arranged by date. Appendix B gives a list of all the know "Brand Names" and rates each brand as to rarity from 1 to 10, with 1 being very common and 10 extremely rare. This is especially valuable to the beginning collector.
This book is hardback, with a dust cover. There are a number of interesting old photos of lamps being used in mines and caves. Very little has been published on American carbide lamps and this is a wonderful source of information.

Bring magnifying glasses.......2007-09-30
This book is too big for your pocket and way too small for a normall read. I gave it a few days but just couldn't get used to squinting. Regardless of how much good info it may contain, its just too painfull. By the way I have 20-20 vision... I was so annoyed by the miniature font that I decided to return it.
WHOLE OF INFORMATION.......2007-08-27
Though over 1200 species is a lot of orchids to be growing in the same conditions and in the same house (or greenhouse), this Masterpiece Book of the orchids culture is all that an orchid grower have ever expected.
And the most important fact is that all the orchids been shown here have the proper scientific name according to Royal Botanic Garden, Kew. Alejandro Taborda, ARGENTINA.
Excellent book.......2007-03-08
It's an excellent book and it tells a lot of all kind of orchids. It's easy to take to the orchidshop to buy new plants.
This is one of the orchidbooks that anyone who loves orchids should have.
Botanica's ORCHIDS.......2006-08-15
This is an excellent book and should be in the home of any orchid enthusiast that enjoys species. There are over 1200 species listed with color photos. This helps make identification much easier.
Since I have had my book for only a few days it is still in excellent condition but others I know who have purchased this title have had a problem with the paper cover coming loose. Also, some of their pages have seperated. Hopefully the quality of this one will be better but even if not then I would purchase it again.
Quality.......2006-07-09
While the contents are very informative and extensive the quality of the book itself is far less than expected. I had been using it for less than two weeks when the cover started detaching from the core. Now it is in such a condition that is nearly unmanagable without constant extra carefulness not normally associated with a well made book.

Re: "Don't buy this book".......2003-07-02
A great reference!
The reason some typefaces in this book are incomplete is that . . . they are incomplete! A complete alphabet does not exist (read the text, dummy).
Believe it or not (and setting aside the ambiguous ethical question of appropriation), the purpose of a book like this is not to provide ready-made cut-n-paste-able typefaces for you to rip off, but to serve as a reference.
DON'T BUY If you're looking for a type specimen book.......2003-06-24
This book may have many samples of typefaces but it does not have all alphabet. Some typefaces only have four letters. And all of them have no punctuations.
If you're looking for a type specimen book, try Adobe Type Library Reference Book (ISBN: 0321136462) instead! Though it shows only one size (about 20pt,) and Adobe's only, it has everything in that set.
A Great Book!.......2003-05-10
This is a valuable reference work with the type faces very well organized. If you are interested in type face design and the history of type, this book is a must!
A Classic!.......2003-05-10
I have the 1958 edition of this book as was hesitant to order this newer edition for fear that it wouldn't have many newer fonts. I was surprised to find a new spacious format and a better classification system. Anyone interested in type faces should have a copy of this book.
The name says it all.......2002-11-11
This encyclopaedia is thorough in the range of established and classic typestyles. Most contain some information as to its origin, unique qualities, and applications, making this more than just a specimen book.

Book Description
Years ago, I met a friend in London I had not seen in many years. He posed a very interesting question to me. He wanted me to give him a statement on Jomo Kenyatta, who was then incarcerated as the leader of the Mau-Mau uprising in Kenya. Though I did not have an answer for my friend, I kept his question in my mind. Then, years later, my wife and I decided to visit Kenya on Safari with friends, which I recount here, vividly in this book.
