The wait is over, as Holly uncovers the murder of a particularly vicious dog owner.

Back on form again.......2007-07-17
I felt that the last couple of books in this series weren't as strong as what they were, but this book puts Holly, Rowdy and Kimi right back on track. Holly is sans Steve, and she is convincing herself that she doesn't miss him. She gets involved with some dog walkers, and Rowdy and her meet a vicious Golden Retriever (that's an oxymoron isn't it). When the owner of the Golden is found shot, Holly finds herself trying to find out who the murderer is. There are lots of new quirky characters, and we see some of the old ones too. The book moves along swiftly, and I enjoyed immenseley
I'm a cat person.......2007-07-01
Don't get me wrong. I'm a confirmed cat person. But a dog-loving friend who's never read my cat mysteries mentioned Susan Conant. Out of curiosity, I picked up THE WICKED FLEA. I think I'm hooked.
Susan Conant tells a good story, and she tells it well. Her Holly Winter is chatty, opinionated, feisty, and downright likeable. I can't wait to devour another Conant book, rather like Kimi the Malamute and the rat-tail-infested french fries. [That's all I'm going to say about that particularly satisfying sub-plot].
So, cat-lovers of the world, let's step for once out of our self-imposed cat-book limitations and read a GASP!! doG-centered book. It's worth taking the leap.
one genuine emotion.......2007-01-30
Holly used to be fun to read. Her enthusiastic gushing, where she name dropped everything from trainers to dog food, might have been naive in some respects, but at least it was amusing and upbeat and her descriptions of dog behavior was spot on. But then the series took a negative turn, and love of dogs seemed to be superceded by digust of humans. The villians didn't just do bad deeds, but their homes, clothes, hygiene and personal habits were described in unpleasant details. I keep reading the series, hoping it will upturn again, but the negativity continued into this book, overwhelming the enthusiasm and the love of dogs. What was once just a few paragraphs from every chapter, has now taken over. The action takes place in a dog park, and a shrink's office, but neither the victim, nor the villians, nor many of the other characters, including most of the dogs are palatable. I was doggedly reading toward the end, for there was one small subplot that had value in it and that spoke of the old enthusiastic happy Holly, the description of Rowdy being bred to Emma, unfortunately just a few email asides. The various other plots wound their unredeeming ways, victims, villians and side characters no more likable or interesting at the end than at the beginning. But when Rowdy's puppies are finally born, the Holly who seemed lately buried in carpy nastiness broke down and cried, wailed as she put it, for the puppy she could not have. That catharsis was the only genuine writing and emotion in the book. The rest seemed makework but this made me almost like Holly again. Write more of that.
My least favorite of the series.......2004-08-10
In this book, I was upset to find my old pal Holly had turned into a real bitch (of the arrogant woman variety) Had to go back and re-read "Creature Discomforts"to find her excuse. I was still offended by her snotty & snobbish condesension toward pet people. OK,I confess that as one of the much maligned pet people, I actually look down my nose at silly show people, not to mention my distaste for breeders. We're still in agreement in our low opinion of backyard breeders and high opinion of rescue organizations. I was also pleased at the renewal of the romance with the marvelous Steve. I had pretty much given up on the series following the aforementioned "Creature Discomforts" in which she rejected the darling man once too often, pushing him into taking up with and marrying a real slimeball dog hater.
So,much as I disliked this book, I am looking forward to "Bride & Groom" and seeing how they manage to merge their canine families. I'm also anxious for updates on some of the other secondary characters. Poor Kevin was still in the hospital when last seen in "The Dogfather", and both he and Rita the shrink had budding romances going.
Back on track, hooray hurrah!.......2003-12-15
After being badly disappointed in the previous installment, I was hesitant.
And wonderfully surprised to find that Ms. Conant has returned! Even though her protaganist holds a dim view of "pet owners", I still really enjoy the characterization. This book seems to have a lighter touch on the personal troubles Holly is facing; something I prefer. Worth the risk!

Book Description
In this long-awaited follow-up to their seminal Conscious Loving, the authors take on two of the most pressing problems that sap vitality and energy from our committed relationships: how to forge a closer relationship that still allows each partner full creative autonomy and how to generate the passion while preserving the harmony essential to keeping long-term partnerships alive and flourishing. Lasting Love grew out of the Hendricks' laboratory of their 23-year marriage as well as their 10-year study of more than 2,000 long-term, committed couples. They discovered that the most common couples conflicts could be traced to at least one of five root causes: an imbalance between the creative energy each partner contributes to the relationship, a lack of emotional honesty, an unwillingness to accept responsibility for everyday issues, deep-seated commitment problems, and a deficiency of daily appreciations. Using these insights as a starting point, the Hendricks devised a program that allows a deeper flow of intimacy between partners and greater creative freedom for each individual: lSpend time expressing your own creativity rather than focusing on 'fixing' your partner. lEliminate the barrier to speaking and hearing the truth about everything. lBreak the cycle of blame and criticism. lMake commitments you can -really stand by. lBecome a master of verbal and nonverbal appreciation.

Don't waste your time.......2007-01-22
I've never been SO disappointed in a book in all my life. I purchased this book via reader "recommendations" and found it to be repeatitive and convuluded mumbo jumbo! This book is a train wreck - it's badly written - bad structured and repeatitive beyond words. The authors style of writing is choppy (at best) and through their words, the author(s) both write like a couple of ex hippy generations self-help wannabees. If you really want "help" with your relationship (or how to improve them)....I would suggest looking elsewhere. This book isn't worth the paper it's written on.
Lasting Love:the 5 secrets of growing a vital,concious relationship.......2006-11-05
This outstanding author continues to guide us to a more perfect concious life.
Excellent .......2006-08-07
This is a wonderful book for any one in a relationship -- that is, any one at all, because even if we're not partnered, we have relationships with others -- family, friends, co-workers. The authors tell us that there are 5 "secrets" to having positive, healthy relationships -- commitment, emotional transparency, sharing responsiblity (not indulging in "it's your fault, not mine"), creative individuation, and appreciation. Their writing is simple but not simplistic. Their suggestions make a lot of sense -- I had a lot of "Wow! Of course!" moments in reading the book. In the section on commitment, for example, they show how often we are committed to the very opposite of what we think we are -- the unconscious commitment as opposed to the conscious one. If we want to have a conflict-free relationship, but find ourselves arguing all the time, then unconsciously we have committed to arguing. I can't really do their ideas justice in a short review -- read the book and find out for yourselves. I recommend it very highly.
5 Secrets of Growing a Vital, Conscience Relationship.......2006-03-19
Never recommend this book to anyone. Once again, it is only opinions of one couple. They have no bibliography, no other sources for their information. It is only a map of their experiences they have had. Tools are very basic and fundamental. "pop Psychology" Dont buy it.
Lasting Love : The 5 Secrets of Growing a Vital, Conscious Relationship.......2006-03-18
I love Gay Hendricks, I listen to he and his wife all the time on Hayhouse.com. This book was one - if not the best book I have read on relationships! This book will defiantly teach you tools on how to have a great relationship. After reading this book, I believe that it's really possible to have a normal relationship.

250 Best Bread Machine Baking Recipes.......2006-02-23
This book is chock full of good recipes. It is by far the best bread machine baking book that I have run across. I use it daily.
Appropriately named!.......2005-10-27
I checked this book out from the library before purchasing it from Amazon. I made so many of the recipes that I knew it to be a good buy and great resource for my personal library! I don't think there is a single recipe that I've tried that I wouldn't make again.
I like that suggestions are made for other uses of the recipes, like Alpine Muesli Rolls can be formed into 4 mini loaves, baked and thinly sliced and then used for a base for hors d'oeuvres; or the Giant Parmesan Breadsticks can be made into focaccia and brushed with olive oil and salt. So many of the loaves can also be made into dinner rolls!

Customer Reviews:
Extremely basic book for the beginner.......2001-03-23
I found this book to be a useful resource for general knowledge, but it lacked lots of important information that is needed to properly keep leopard geckos. The author's style of writing is refreshingly free of overly technical terms and "scientific" language, so this book would be appropriate for younger keepers or those who want only the most elementary information. The book make numerous glaring ommissions on proper care though, while adding extraneous information that does little to help. An example of this is the 3 page discussion on types of heaters that never even mentions at what temperature geckos should be kept. Overall, it's not a bad book but it was frustrating for me to try and find detailed technical information that simply was not included. Although it does well to introduce leopard geckos to the novice, this book is definitely not a stand alone resource for the serious keeper.
Good book but Leopard Gecko Manual is a better choice.......2000-04-19
I think this book worth the money. If you can, buy it and buy the Leopard Gecko Manual too. If you must pick up just one, LGM is a better choice. You will find more information on that book

Complete Misrepresentation of the Context Group.......2006-12-20
Gary Burnett has done an exceptionally poor job of understanding the work of the Context Group and as a result badly caricatures their views. The most clear example is:
"So then, what are we to make of Malina's first century individual who, he contends, existed with no individual self-consciousness, was shaped and moulded entirely by the group of which he was embedded, and had no interest or consciousness of any, inner, psychological states and no warmth in his human relationships? Such a person would be a shell of a human being, a social drone incapable of the behaviour that makes us truly human. Here we recall Cohen's objections to anthropological approaches which effectively deny individuals their self-consciousness and exalt the cultural and social to a position of dominance over individual human beings. In Malina we have an extreme example of such an approach." (45)
Burnett has committed the classic error of all critics of the Context Group, thinking that they denied ALL thought of persons as individuals, when their teaching is rather that the group retained PRIORITY over the individual. They do not say NO individual self-consciousness, but rather that individual self-consciousness was given a lesser priority to the group.
Synopsis of book.......2002-09-09
This book proposes that there was a lively sense of the individual self in persons in the Hellenistic world of the urban centres in which Paul lived and ministered, whereby individualistic behaviour was not unknown and where individuals were not simply determined by their culture and the group of which they were a part. This is in contrast to many recent sociological approaches to the New Testament which emphasise the collective over the individual. Hence it is argued that the individual is a central feature of Paul's letter to the Romans.
This book challenges the very strong emphasis put upon the collective in recent approaches to Paul's letter to the Romans, especially by sociologically based NT research, but also within the wider body of Romans research. It suggests that it is possible to maintain that Paul was vitally interested in the salvation of the individual, without having to revert to traditional Lutheran interpretations of the text.

Book Description
The alphabet is at once familiar and mysterious. Its letters have been the object of speculation since their invention almost four thousand years ago; the symbols represent sounds, yet they exist in their own right, often invested with quasi-magical power. Johanna Drucker, who teaches art history at Yale University, examines the imaginative and idiosyncratic ways in which the letters of the alphabet have been assigned value in political, spiritual, or religious belief systems over two millennia. The first book to explore fully this colorful, poetic, and frequently eccentric realm, The Alphabetic Labyrinth is richly complemented by images that have rarely or never before been reproduced. Drawing on a wide variety of little-known sources, both literary and artistic, the author adds a new and exciting chapter to the history of ideas which will prove fascinating to cultural historians, art historians, and anyone interested in the history of writing.
Customer Reviews:
Poetic, mystical, and literary associations of the alphabet.......2001-12-10
This book on the history of the alphabet is focused on Western and Semitic scripts; it pays little heed to the alphabetic scripts of South Asia. This book seems more concerned with mystical and artistic elaborations of the alphabetic symbols than with its actual use as a writing system. It focuses on things like the Kabbalah, calligraphic styles, and the changes wrought on attitudes to the alphabet wrought by the invention of printing. Parts of it seem a history of concepts used by other scholars attempting to determine the history and origin of the alphabet, rather than a new contribution to the alphabet's history.
Those who wish a more sober account of the alphabet's history, and tracing the family tree of the various alphabetic scripts, will get more mileage out of David Diringer's -The Alphabet: A Key to the History of Mankind-. The information presented in this book, however, is interesting, if only for the fanciful ideas various people have devised around the alphabet.
My copy seems to have a number of typographical errors and other mistakes in it. A long passage discusses the thought of "Marcos the Gnostic." From the context I am reasonably certain that Marcion, not "Marcos," was intended. The people of Mount Seir in the Bible are identified in the book with Kenites and Midianites; if my memory serves me, the inhabitants of Mount Seir were Edomites and Horites. These mistakes tend to make me less inclined to trust the many passages that present data that is entirely new to me.
Incredible information.......2001-08-24
This book presents so much information, but does it in such a way, that I could not put this book down, with the exception to absorb what I had just read.
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in not only the genesis of the alphabet and it's morphology, but of other symbols as well, including alchemy symbols.
Missing the Point.......2001-07-31
A reader reviewed this book by Joanna Drucker as not being enough informative on the alphabet history in itself. It's unfair and not informate to review the book like this. Its manifesto is all in the evocative title: The Alphabetic Labyrinth: The Letters in History and Imagination. Joanna Drucker traced an history of the alphabet from the very beginning talking about the interesting and often left apart complex variety of meanings of the letterform, embodied by mystery, symbolic, alchemic, religious, esotheric and many other values, offering an unique showcase of the history of writing. Saying the book is unsatisfying equals to say you have not even read the title, which explains quite well its content!
Disappointing.......2000-09-15
Going against the flow of reviews here, I found this book disappointing.
For a book of this scope, it is woefully short and lacking meaty details.
It rather ends up giving more space to the subjects of mysticism and the like, than to actual discourse on historical writing systems.
For instance, the "section" on runic languages is effectively two pages long, and half of those pages are taken up with diagrams; while parts of entire, multiple chapters are dedicated to illustrating calligraphic styles thru the ages. Fascinating on its, but perhaps better studied in a different volume.
All encompassing story of the alphabet.......1998-07-13
Johanna Drucker gives us a comprehensive history of the alphabet, or should I say alphabets. She tells us about everything from the history of type face, to groups using various alphabets to justify their existence as a nation. Drucker also examines the various ways individuals have interpreted the alphabet; as a divine gift from a higher being to a necessary creation of "civilized" governments. This book was a fantastic read, although some sections required more than one reading for complete comprehension. A very informative book.

An Amazing Woman.......2002-03-26
Anyone interested in Israel, Israeli politics, woman's rights, gay rights, or, just an inspirational story should read this book. OK, so the story of a woman who moves with her husband and daughter to Israel and becomes deeply involved in, first, Israeli politics, and, secondly, the women's movement, may not be for every reader - but, for those who have some interest in the above topics will be introduced to a truly remarkable individual. Maybe the most disappointing aspect of this story is the author's self-effacing tone as she describes her early years in Israel. She opens with a description of her first day in the Knesset as if she were a little girl in her father's study. By story's end her voice has evolved into one of confidence and direction. Too bad the reader has to wait for this strong voice to emerge. She has so much to offer.
Through the Looking Glass.......2000-05-28
There are many reasons why you enjoy a book. Sometimes it is because the book takes you to rare and exotic places. Sometimes it teaches you something new about yourself. Sometimes it is just a good read. And sometimes it is because you read about shared and common experiences. In this case reading the memoir was like going back in a time machine to an Israel that I knew and loved: the Israel of the late sixties and seventies. I found it enjoyable and nostalgic but I am not sure that other readers would feel the same emotions as myself. I am not sure the book is capable of transcending time and space and drawing the unaffiliated reader into the experience. One of the weaknesses of the book is its tone. ALthough the writer does attempt to be candid and confiding there is something patronising in her tone. It is hard to identify with her journey. SHe went from wife, to feminist parliamentarian, to exile. During the course of her journey I found it hard to locate the woman inside the narrator. I think the book is a good interesting read but I don't think it has a wide public appeal. If you're not a feminist or a zionist than the story is not strong enough to draw you in
Revisiting the 70's.......2000-04-30
How does one rate a book? By one's own reactions to it or by trying to assess its universal appeal. Or does one balance the assessment b juxtaposing both. In reviewing this book I am a bit puzzled, because I am torn between my own reactions and what I consider to be the real value of the book. For me as an Ammerican immigrant living in Israel, Marsha Freedman is an icon. She lived in Israel during the heady optimistic period which spanned from the 6 Day War to the Begin years. As one who shared those experiences and lived through them the book was a fascinating read. Although her autobiographical voice is erratic. It fluctuates between confessional and triumphant. THere are times she descends to name dropping and a bit of gossip. And I must admit I did relish these tidbits of gossip. Although I enjoyed the book thoroughly and could not put it down, I think that it has limited appeal. In oreder to appreciate it you have to be either a feminist or an expatriot living in Israel. I think anyone else would find it irrelevant
