Complex relationships.......2002-08-01
Sharon McCone, a private investigator, is asked to follow Frank Wilkonson and report his activities to a man named Rudy Goldring. Instead of participating in illegal activities, as Sharon expects, Wilkonson visits various florist and garden outlets. As she delves into Wilkonson's past and present endeavors, she uncovers a complicated web of love and betrayal. Two murders occur and Sharon knows that she must find the perpetrator in order to prevent more killings from happening. This is a typical tightly-woven, well-written mystery from the creator of the female PI, Marcia Muller.
Two Difficult and Selfish Husbands.......2002-07-12
Marcia Muller is adept at describing relationships. In this book we meet at least two difficult and selfish husbands whose wives are coming apart with drugs or anger. THERE'S SOMETHING IN A SUNDAY is one of the better entries in the Sharon McCone series.
what a way to spend a Sunday.......2000-09-21
Frank Wilkonson spends his Sundays looking through all the horticulture spots in San Francisco. Who's he looking for? What's he looking for? That's what Sharon McCone has been hired to find out. Where her search leads her is what we find out. Sharon's friends have mysterious pasts, and she investigates thoroughly. If you enjoy intricate mystery plots, you'll love this one. Muller is a superb mystery writer with a superb knowledge of the California scene. Her descriptions are awesome. It's another McCone mystery.....and a great one.
Product Description
Private eye Sharon McCone takes on a routine surveillance as a favor to Rudy Goldring, a longtime client of her employer, the All Souls Legal Cooperative. She tails one Frank Wilkinson through Golden Gate Park's tropical gardens, the early morning flower market, and other horticultural landmarks. The man's business seems harmless. But when she arrives at Goldring's downtown office to report her findings, she finds him dead. Now caught in the middle of a murder investigation, Sharon decides it's time to visit Wilkinson's home turf - the town of Hollister, where ranching is the main vocation and minding your business is the golden rule. There, Sharon unearths a tangle of sour relationships. Some of the strands lead back to the city, straight to the middle of its community of upper-class activists and deep into the world of the homeless.

I Wish I'd Known..........2006-02-28
I wish I'd known when I first owned this short collection that it would someday be selling for such a price!! I'd have bought five copies and retired rich! Vachss and Lansdale collaborated on a few Hap and Leonard short stories... Leonard was finally forced to go to court for burning down the crack house next door (a running joke in some of the Hap and Leonard novels). Vachss, a lawyer in real life, obviously ran with the courtroom proceedings in this humorous venture.
Also included was an excerpt from "Captains Outrageous" and an "interview" with some of the characters from the H & L novels. This was a very short collection, a sideline in the Hap and Leonard series. I would recommend it to fans, but not at such a high price... Where are the reprints? Writers make no royalties from the sales of used books... bring this back into print, please! One of these stories was reprinted in "Mad Dog Summer and Other Stories."
Book Description
Break the binge/diet cycle today!
Based on Marilyn Migliore's highly successful treatment program, which she designed at St. Luke's-Roosevelt/A University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York,
The Hunger Within offers a twelve-week program for compulsive overeaters that provides real hope for lifelong weight loss.
If you've struggled with weight your whole life, chances are you know that diets don't work, and that most people who lose weight put it back on. Finally, here is a book that takes the focus off food and guides dieters through an intensive psychological program that includes daily writing exercises to help the compulsive eater get in touch with the hungry child within.
The Hunger Within shows the yo-yo dieter how his or her individual struggle with eating and weight is a response to feelings of emotional deprivation that are established in early childhood, when the ways we're soothed and punished are established. This concrete, lucid, step-by-step guide explores the core reasons for overeating, identifies the triggers that precipitate bingeing, and helps readers to break the vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting. Each week, the reader listens in on three fictional program participants, and is encouraged to do the weekly exercises as if participating him- or herself.
If you've wanted to join a group or treatment program to help you lose weight, or if you're a last-ditch dieter,
The Hunger Within offers a guided course that you can do in your own home and at your own pace.
Filled with:
Motivational Sayings
Guided Weekly "Sessions"
Exercises to Help You Stay on Track
Hunger Awareness Diary
Vicious Cycle Worksheet
Weekly Food For Thought
Customer Reviews:
The answers really do lie within this book!.......2007-07-27
Marilyn goes through 3 different characters perspectives throughout the journey from enlightenment to recovery. She offers many exercises throughout the book, along with the 3 characters responses to each situation. Watching their recovery itself in a group-therapy like surrounding really helped me feel like I wasn't alone either and was honestly enough to open my eyes.
lots of information.......2005-09-14
this is a workbook that you will need to devote some serious time to. It looks like a well-rounded program.
This book is excellent.......2005-07-01
For anyone who struggles with compulsive overeating this book/workbbok is excellent. The people studied are very easy to identify with and the book gives the compulsive overeater something to do about it. I really enjoyed it
A Life Saver.......2004-02-01
Not a "quick fix" diet book, but a permanent fix! Sensible, easy to follow
program that works and LASTS!!! Helps you understand WHY you overeat, not just what you should eat. Beautiful relevant quotes in each chapter were a lovely touch.
The Hunger Within.......2003-08-16
I was disappointed with this book, also. I thought the written exercises were a little silly and disappointing. I expected the book to have more substance to it. Overcoming Overeating and It's Not about Food are better books for the money.

Finally Found the Book I Was Searching For!!.......2007-09-27
Yes, this is the one! If you're faced with having to cook for a crowd and have little or no experience, this cookbook is a really great addition to your cookbook library. The recipes are laid out in a no-nonsense format, they're easy to follow, they give pan sizes and amounts, and most of the recipes are for 50 servings which really simplifies the math! It's a textbook for the food service industry so it gives a lot of good information, including weight and volume measures, substitution equivalents, food portioning aids, and more. Each chapter begins with useful information and extra tips on food prep. I plan menus for my church's Wednesday night suppers. We feed families, students, young and elderly members of our congregation and several homeless people in our church neighborhood. This book has helped take the guess-work out of figuring amounts and portions. It has really made the work easier. I feel as though I've found the Holy Grail of cooking for crowds!
For the subject it doesn't get any better.......2001-03-08
When I found myself having to cook up food for large groups, I found this book invaluable. The book is well laid out, gives easy to follow conversions, and the recipes turn out well. The book has a wide variety so you are able to use this book for many different meals. Best of all the recipes turn out very well. I was able to use this book in helping me scale up other recipes as well. This is a definate must if you do large scale cooking!
Bulk Preparation at it's best!.......2000-04-29
This cookbook is an invaluable resource for my catering department as well as a basis for recipes for my culinary class. They are easy to follow and have both Metric and U.S. measurements for ease of conversions.
Since purchasing this book, I've enjoyed preparing many epicurean delights from within it's pages. I've been able to provide nutritious, eye pleasing meals for over 300 along with scaling several recipes down to meet the dietary needs of only 20 to 30 guests.
Cooking in bulk is a snap with this book, because it takes the guesswork out of the kitchen!
A thorough, easy to read and easy to follow cookbook........1998-05-17
The recipes in this cookbook are all prepared in quantities of 50. It contains both US Standard and Metric weights and measures. The dishes are basic and easy to prepare. This is very important when you are dealing with feeding a large number of people. I have personally used many recipes from this book to serve over 200 people. All the dishes were well received. They turned out exactly as they should and the cookbook even has additional information to aid in figuring how much of each ingredient to buy. When it comes to cooking in bulk, this book is - hands downs - my favorite.
Book Description
Cat Naps: The Key To Contentment is filled with over 50 color photographs and 112 pages of rest and repose. This book proves that every cat is a master when it comes to the art of relaxation with great quotations and excerpts that illustrate the value of slowing down and catching your breath.
Customer Reviews:
Contentment as only a cat can do.......2007-03-17
This was a Christmas gift and I have browsed through it several times. Cat lovers probably have seen the real thing in each pose many times. Yet, we will still ooh and aah over these photos of cats and kittens sleeping in piles, singly, and wherever there is room enough for them to stretch out or curl up. Nothing shows relaxation like a cat. Each picture is highlighted with a poem or quote from a famous writer, such as "Loafing needs no explanation and is its own excuse," by Christopher Morley. Need an excuse for a nap? There are about 50 here.
Delightful gift idea for any cat lover!.......2004-12-21
"Cat Naps: The Key to Contentment" is one of the darn cutest books a cat lover could hope to stumble across. It contains 54 images of adorable cats asleep in all kinds of places and positions. All the photos are beautifully shot. Each is accompanied by a quote related to sleep, relaxation, etc. Some of the quotes are actually cat-related, and others are applicable to life in general, but each quote fits perfectly with the picture it is matched with. One of my favorites is: "If there were to be a universal sound depicting peace, I would surely vote for the purr" (pg.15 - Barbara L. Diamond). How true! Anyone that loves cats knows how soothing their company can be. This little gem of a book would make a great gift for a cat-loving friend, and you'll probably want to grab one for yourself as well.

Customer Reviews:
Most comprehensive house plant book out there!.......2005-05-22
This book is absolutely the most comprehensive house plant book out there. It covers almost every topic I can conceive of and then some.
There are pages devoted to not only propagating plants, but also watering (quality, temperature method), repotting and caring for your plants. Not only is there a detailed section on pests and diseases, the book also contains recipes on how to rid your plants of these maladies. If you are a serious gardener, you will appreciate the descriptions of soil types for different plants and the recipes for a variety of potting soils.
Besides the plant basics, the authors cover how to create beautiful plant groupings. There are suggestions for how to plant baskets and containers with a variety of plants. Lots of useful ideas!
The best part of the book is the plant listing section. Literally hundreds of plants have detailed information about care, light requirements and propagation. Each listing has color photos and many have special tips out in the margins (for quick reference). The authors have also included watering, light and fertilization symbols so you can see the plant's requirements at a glance.
I love houseplants, and I really love this book. It has just about everything in it. I have been known to just sit and page through it. I highly recommend this book!
Good, but not GREAT!!.......2004-03-12
Although the book is comprehensive and has many tips on house plants, I only found 3 out of 25 plants in my house in this book. The photo section of this book is lovely, but it is titled "The most beautiful plants from A to Z" and does nothing for people like me with mostly all green house plants. Most of these plants they reference are blooming and floral. Make sure you know what you're looking for before you purchase this book!!
Excellent--"plain speak" good advice.......2003-07-08
I have a huge assortment of plant/gardening books, and often do alot of cross-referencing w/my hobby. This book is one of the first that I always pick up. It's "plain speak" approach (i.e. author will say, "I have always found..." etc.) is just terrific; I often find myself wondering how "Ingrid can help me with this?!" The tips are a wonderful "sidebar" feature, both highly informative, and just interesting! The descriptions the author provides of each plant is a true DESCRIPTION....detailed, and geared to educate the reader. They're not just a bullet-point listing of a few of the essentials on the plant, with questions left unanswered.
I went to my library over and over again, consulting this book on a number of plants questions and issues, until finally, I got my own precious copy!!
100% worth the investment of time and money for your gardening needs, both indoors and (gosh, what a bonus!) outdoors as well.
Very comprehensive!!.......2003-01-26
This is a wonderful book. Having only recently discovered the joys of houseplants, I was looking for a thorough and comprehensive book that would help me identify my plants, and properly take care of them. This book does both and more. There is a section devoted to the conditions and care required for a wide range of houseplant species, plus great sections on diseases, pests, and common mistakes. After each in depth section is an "at a glance section" for quick reference.
Another very important and often overlooked feature is that it has a list of poisonous plants, so that we can make sure we place plants that can be dangerous out of reach of our pets and children (or better yet, avoid buying them all together).
I am also a big fan of its construction. Sturdy hard cover binding and glossy pages make it easy to wipe off all of the potting soil that gets dropped on it. :-)
Great book! Worthy investment!
Love It.......2002-08-15
I just love this book it tells you all you need to know

ASIN: 1552975924 |
Book Description
Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix are pioneers in the use of photography in plant illustration.
The Botanical Garden I and II, are exciting and thoroughly modern renditions of illustrated botany books. Ten years in the making, this set combines the finest in photography with up-to-date, expert commentary to bridge the gap between gardener-friendly books and scientific texts. In the tradition of the great botanical illustrations, each featured plant has been carefully photographed -- as a whole and in its parts -- against a white background to reveal the plant's physical characteristics in exacting detail.
Plants from more than 1,200 distinct groups are described -- from oaks to violets and water lilies to grasses -- and are presented in evolutionary order, from the most primitive to the most advanced. Each plant listing includes:
Name: genus, species and common names, date of discovery, and range.
Description: detailed and concise in the scientific style.
Key Recognition Features.
Ecology and Geography.
Comment: cultivation needs plus notes about unusual hybrids or developments in the genus.
As a pair, the two volumes are an all-inclusive source of information and photographs of more than 2,000 genera of temperate plants. Thorough introductory text encompasses numerous themes in botany, from the history of plant development to current DNA studies that are revolutionizing plant classification. Each volume includes a detailed index and bibliography.
The Botanical Garden I and II are exciting additions to a gardening bookshelf. They are visually rich and highly accurate references that will remain interesting, useful and current for many years. Offering a discerning insight into the relationship between garden plants and their natural environments and accuracy that is unequalled outside scientific circles, this duo are truly the modern heirs to a long history of botanical references. There are simply no other works of this kind available today.
About Volume II, Perennials and Annuals
The second in the two volumes of The Botanical Garden, this illustrated reference covers 515 genera of herbaceous temperate plants, including annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs and aquatic plants. All are described in complete detail, including how plants are related and their origins and uses. Previously imprecise classifications are corrected. Listings are organized in evolutionary order, from the ancient plants -- sphagnum moss and ferns -- to the modern irises, hostas and sedges.

FOR SCIENTISTS, GARDENERS, ARTISTS, AND CHILDREN.......2007-02-28
This is great for botanist and gardeners. I am a botanist and will say that these pictures are worth a thousand and one words. It is faster to look though this book than search the web, when you are trying to remember a flower because the images are so clear and vivid. They are arranged by scientific families and there is a glossary of common and scientific names.
The book is VERY heavy and the pages are glossy (got for free super saver shipping!). It is necessary that this book be hardback, because it will be used. I have artist friends that have borrowed it to sketch from. Friends have looked though it to get ideas for planting flowers and researching native blooms. I wish I had had this book as a child, because I loved plants then too!
Be sure to get the set(book on shrubs too). If you buy the set, instead of one at a time, the books come in a box. I purchased my set in the box while working at the New York Botanical. This box helps protect the spines and hold these huge books upright.
Not a cheap book, but it is worth the money for plant I.D........2005-09-03
A little awkward to navigate, I would prefer Botanical alphabetical order...you definitely will be going to the index a lot. I would also like to see more specific information on the plant's preferred environment and zones. Excellent illustrations; great for plant I.D.
The Ultimate Botanical Reference........2002-09-20
I have seen an early copy of this book through a friend, and I can honestly say it is the best botanical reference book that i have ever seen.
The Pictures are brillient, with the plants seeming to come alive from the page. The authors- Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix are two of the most respected authors and have a welth of experience that they are egar to share with you.
My Advice- PreOrder this book before the Christmas Season rust to advoide dissapointment.

Get your green thumb here!.......2001-12-22
Of all the plant books I own, and that's a lot, this is the one I find myself refering to constantly. The Houseplant Encyclopedia is easy to read, and has a humorous tone to it at times. This book was the one that finally showed me the RIGHT way to propagate a Snake Plant. (HINT: The cuttings have to be stuck in a certain direction in the soil or nothing will happen.) (...) You'll find yourself refering to it for humidity tips, feeding info and watering pointers. Plus she reveals whether talking to your plants really does help, or just annoys your roommates.

A little bit of everything.......2005-01-12
This book is about three inches thick and offers information on almost everything you could possibly ever bring into your house (plant-wise that is). It has in-depth chapters about orchids, cacti, vining plants, and other sub-groups that you'll see in stores; plant problems, propagation methods, general care, and MUCH more. It's the book I flip to first when I need an answer. NOT a beginner's type book, but full of info for those who want to dig deeper into their hobby. LOTS of reading here, so it's not for the faint of heart, but it has lots of pictures and drawings to help out too. Highly recommended.

A good book for beginners.......2001-04-12
I just went through the book, the most important part i liked is its language which is very welcoming for a beginner. I know lots of graphic softwares very well, but unware of some basic designing fundamentals. This book showed me the way. Though the samples in the book is few and not very interesting but has lots of basic information written in compact form so that a beginner can refer back any time. The book is broken down into basic topics a designer should know and its related subtopics. I liked its exercises at end of each chapter. May not be interesting to a person who is already a professional, but its a very handy book for anybody who want to become a designer with limited knowledge about it. I think one should go through it before trying out very hi-end designing books.
perhaps useful as a poor man's "for dummies" book on design.......1998-06-13
This book was required reading for a publication class taughtby Toor. In general, the book is extremely simple, even simplistic, and gives the reader only a cursory glance at desktop publishing, suggesting many obvious cliches and "tried and true" design solutions rather than training the reader's visual sense. Some of the design examples are crude and amateurish. Ironically, the book is poorly designed as well, making liberal use of overused default graphics software "effects" and muddy, low-resolution graphics. Very disappointing... I would suggest this book only to non-designers who do want to really learn anything about design, but are only looking for some easy answers.
