Book Description

Once a Wall Street hotshot, Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree chucked it all for a charmingly dilapidated fixer-upper in the tiny town of Eastport, Maine. She was certain she’d left the dangers of city life behind—until she discovered that no place, no matter how idyllic and peaceful it may appear, is safe from murder.

It began with the mysterious disappearance of Harriet Hollingsworth—Eastport’s snoopiest resident. Everyone is convinced the old busybody bolted out of town to escape her creditor—everyone except Jake and her best friend Ellie who know Harriet would never leave home without her most prized possession. But before Jake and Ellie can persuade police chief Bob Arnold to open an investigation, they’ll need to come up with proof more sinister than a pair of abandoned binoculars.

Just as Jake starts poking around for clues, things suddenly take a troubling turn for the worse. A suspicious accident nearly kills her teenaged son, Sam, and her husband, Wade, just misses getting his head blown off. Jake is prepared to attribute these incidents to a spate of bad luck—until another “accident” leaves a visitor to Eastport unmistakably dead.

Most perplexing, all this mayhem coincides with the unexpected arrival of a man from Jake’s past: a former New York City cop. Harry Markle claims he has unintentionally brought an unwelcome guest into Eastport: a crook determined to knock off everyone with ties to Harry.

Twenty-four hours ago, Jake’s only worry was fixing her broken-down gutters and downspouts before the big storm swept into town. Now, everything seems to be falling apart all around her. Jake knows from experience that the truth is usually as messy and complicated as do-it-yourself remodeling. As it becomes chillingly clear that appearances in this quaint community are more misleading than ever, she’ll have to find a way to lure a homicidal maniac into the light--before he nails another victim.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2006-06-09

I repeatedly struggled with whether to keep reading this book. The characters are very shallow (perky women, mysterious men with deep dark pasts, teenagers who can't decide what they want, etc.) The main character sustains major injuries yet blows them off and flounces on. A huge storm threatens out to sea throughout the book, but never arrives. Paranoia reigns and people are not what they seem. Repeatedly someone walks in the door just as the main character thinks of them or wants to ask them a question.

I never cared, and I finished the book with relief, and regret for wasted time.

1 out of 5 stars cutesy cozy doesn't cut it.......2006-06-01

This is the first I've read in the "Home Repair Is Homicide" series. And it will be the last. The characters never come alive, the plot is contrived. The sleuths leap from one improbable conclusion to another. And the writing? Consider that, on pp. 150-151 a single character "snapped," "sneered," "declaimed angrily," "fulminated," "yelled" (twice), "shouted," and finally "expostulated." The verb "said" does not appear to be one Graves is familiar with.

3 out of 5 stars So Far... So Bad.......2005-03-24

This is the first book I've read by Sarah Graves and I'm not having a good time. I love the jokes, it has good humor, but I'm having the hardest time keeping everyone straight.

I'm not sure if it's just my reading and lack of understanding but somehow I'm finding that one minute we're daytime in the hospital and the next we're night time in another town and I don't know how we got there. I'm also having a hard time keeping the characters straight as to who does what, when, where, why and who.

It's probably just me, but this is one of the most frustrating books I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Who's behind the accidents and murder.......2004-09-09

Jessica is taking a leisurely three-day journey on a classic train, the historic Whistler Northwind, with members of the Track and Rail Club through much of British Columbia. She was invited by her friend Reggie Weems who is one of the Vice Presidents of the club. The trip begins and ends in Vancouver, one of her favorite cities.

Not into the trip, Al Blevin, the club's president, goes into convulsions and dies after taking a sip of a Bloody Mary. Immediately Jessica suspects strychnine poisoning. Al's wife Theodora tells Jessica emphatically to stop talking about it being poisoning. She said he had heart failure.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Detective Marshall asks Reggie and Jessica to keep their ears and eyes open and report back to him with any information they get.

Theodora's son, Benjamin, follows Jessica up Whistler Mountain and tells her to "butt out!" She has some accidents and other encounters along the way.

Plus there's the mysterious disappearance of Theodora's previous husband, Elliott Vail. He disappeared on that very train three years ago. Everyone believes he jumped, but his body was never found. Jessica wonders if there is any correlation to Al's death.

Al was not well liked, so there is a plethora of suspects. Plus there is plenty of trouble in his past to add to the suspect list. Can they figure out who did it and why before the end of the trip and everyone heads home and without Jessica finding herself in peril?

After watching so many years of Murder, She Wrote on television, I can "see" the characters acting out the book as I read it. It is a lot of fun and so easy to read.

I especially enjoyed this book with it being set on such a wonderful train trip. The scenery was wonderful. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Very light-weight mystery with so-so writing...........2003-09-05

I am not impressed. That pretty much says it. This book was very light reading, you could blow it away like a dandelion. I like my books with more heft to them. There was not enough characterizationýthe people came across as being cardboard. Graves means well as a writer, sheýs picked an area which no one else has, concerning a woman and her friends who get involved in mysteries through their home repair. Thatýs very strange to say the least, but there are other mystery writers out there who use cats, who do catering (which leads to trouble), etc. So I guess a book using home repair as a catalyst for crime is not any more farfetched then the other things.

This book was so uninteresting to me, that every time I picked it up to finish reading it, I couldnýt remember the plot line or the characters, and Iýd have to read back a bit to remember what it was about. I know my memory is shot sometimes, but it isnýt that bad, and I donýt have that problem with other books!

There are at least two kinds of fantasy writing -- one where the author takes the "pritee" and "bedamned" stuff seriously, and the kind where the author is wry and funny. This book is about a demon who slowly realizes humans are pretty cool. Of course, that's not PC demon belief. There's a love story here and wit.

Excellent book...funny and it even makes you think a bit about religion. Good characters...keeps you guessing how the demons will try to corrupt the mortals who rediscovered them. If you can find this book, get it!!!

I was in denial about my depression. This book helped me see it for what it is and gave helpful info about how to deal with it and heal. I still read it over and over. If you only want to buy one book, this is the only book I would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars This book was my therapy!!.......2006-05-02

After the birth of our second baby, I was over the moon....I felt wonderful. I was thrilled to have a second daughter - another little princess. As it turned out, our little princess was colic and I suffered with sleep deprivation for one full year. At about 6 months after the baby was born I started to experience physical things I had never felt before in my life. It started with severe anxiety attacks and then after a couple of months the depression set in. Without question, the worst time in my life. My mother picked up this book for me suspecting that I was experiencing symptons of post pardom depression. She was right - I was. This book became my therapy - I used myself first and foremost and my family & friends as the book encouraged me to do. This book helped me understand every sympton I was experiencing and how to deal with them. I could not have managed without this book. The knowledge gave me power to cope and I am forever grateful for it. My recovery is in full swing - thanks to this book. "This isn't what I expected" is invaluable to any mother who is dealing with symptons of post pardom depression. I thank the author for writing such a powerful book in helping women overcome PPD.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book for PPD!!!!.......2005-11-26

I have read 4 books on Postpartum Depression and this one is by far the best. It is very informative not just for the person suffering this illness, but for the significant other and family members. It even has a chapter especially written for the husband on how to deal with his wife having PPD.

It also has exercises that get you thinking about how you are really feeling and then teaching you to turn that thinking into positive reinforcement.

I would suggest this book over any other for anyone suffering from PPD. There is hope!!

4 out of 5 stars This IS What I Expected.......2005-08-22

If you have it, or think you have it - this book will help you know it. A no nonsense view of the facts as they exist regarding physical changes, the psychological changes and how having this type of depression effects the ENTIRE family. If one spoke in the family wheel changes,EVERYONE changes. Get support, read this book! Know what is happening to you. Remember, this depression is not your choice, however it is real.

              Book Description

: With menus and recipes for each of the ten sabbats, this is a major resource for anyone planning a dish for the countless potlucks we hold at every season. I began reading it with some fear and trepidation. When the authors began speaking of Medieval customs, I was terribly afraid that the recipes would concentrate on things like boar's heads and roast oxen, or whatever the Witches of Old might have at their seasonal gatherings. On the contrary, the recipes that Wood and Seefeldt include in this attractive collection tend to be simple and very good, at least to judge from those that I've sampled. And no, the ingredients are not at all exotic. I tried making latkes, which were quick and easy to mix in my medieval Cuisinart. With a bit of apple in the mix, they were very good. I also had no problems with soups, which were simple and delicious.

But the recipes are only the beginning. A fascinating introduction gives a positive, brief picture of Neo-Pagan Witchcraft, as background for anyone new to the Craft. Then, for each of the sabbats and for each recipe, there is an introduction, suggesting, among other things, rituals for blessing the meal and for invoking the appropriate Deities. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the whole book, from cover to cover, which is something I've never done with any of the hundred-or-so other cookbooks sitting on my sagging shelves. This is likely to become my favorite cookbook, and I suspect it could be yours, too.

Not just a cookbook, this unusual publication outlines the spiritual relevance of the eight major pagan holidays and offers appropriate rituals, menus, and recipes for each occasion. The recipes are easy to follow and make use of ingredients at their seasonal peak. From dandelion wine to medieval honey cakes, the dishes preserve a culinary tradition closely connected to natural rhythms and enduring symbolism. The authors also include an appendix on growing an herb garden and a resource list of herb seed companies and nurseries.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook.......2006-08-05

This is my favorite Wiccan cookbook. Some people may complain about the veal, but I don't hear anyone complaining about the Medieval Game Bird. (which, by the way, double the beer, add parsnips, carrots, potatoes and a bunch of herbs...side of soda bread....awesome.! ) In my household, the hunters are the patron god(esses), the recipes in this book are hearty, easy and easily modified to suit game meat. I refer to this book for harvest festival recipes and side dishes to accompany the game we procure.

Yes, there are pagans who hunt.....

              3 out of 5 stars Yum!.......2006-06-19

A wonderful book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of the recipies have been a success (one or two didn't turn out so wonderfully, but that may have been my mistake!), and it has been a huge help in organising our celebrations.

As for the recipe calling for veal, if you object to it's use, boycott the veal industry! Apparently though, some of the other readers do not understand that just because a recipe says "veal" that another meat cannot be used. I live on a cattle station, where we slaughter our own, and I can tell you that a good piece of aged rump usually tastes better in ANY veal recipe!! Obviously your industry standards are lower than ours, because I know that our calves are spoilt rotten (not overfed, just well looked after!) before going off to a (relativly) humaine butcher.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be into Wicca to enjoy this.......2003-12-15

You don't have to be into Wicca to enjoy this book. I enjoy cookbooks and it is hard to find many that have good recipes that are easy to fix. I don't follow Wicca or practice it, but I loved this cookbook.

The recipes are comfort food style recipes that are generally easy to make. They have covered everything in this book from Bread to Dessert. I love the bread recipes and the basic stuffing recipe is easy and delicious.

Just don't avoid this book because it is Wiccan, if you do you are missing a gem of a cookbook. The history and lore and interesting reading, but it's the recipes that are wonderful and savory.

What I like most is that this book has recipes that are good quality without being pages and pages of ingredients and recipes. Many of them are basics that you can use in a variety of different ways. This is my favorite cookbook. My only complaint is that it isn't longer, but that's not really a complaint at all:)

3 out of 5 stars ditto on banishing the veal.......2002-07-24

I just got the book and probably wouldn't have been so eager to buy it had I known there was a veal recipe included. The book has lots of charm but the veal recipe disturbs me. Wiccans follow the tenet of "harm none", which means animals too. I will enjoy tryng many recipes in this book but can't understand why two Wiccan authors would include the veal recipe -is it possible they don't know the horrible abuse the calves endure? I have always said that as Wiccans grow in number in this country, surely we can get something done about animal abuse. (Christians should be working on it too.) I do like the lovely cover and design of the book. I also like the spells and ideas on observance of the holidays. Lots of these ideas will work for anyone - Wiccan or not.

3 out of 5 stars Try Banishing Veal Stew Instead of Vanishing Veal Stew.......2002-03-02

I really like this beautiful book very much. It has so many great recipes, very interesting lore and inspirational ritual ideas. It looks beautiful. It is printed on quality paper. It has been well researched and it is a big help in planning Sabbat feasts. I am troubled by the inclusion of the recipe for Vanishing Veal Stew, however. I live just a short distance away from a major veal supplier and slaughterhouse that actually invented a most cruel and hideous method of raising veal calves that has become the industry standard. I'm not a vegetarian though I should be. The hellish life that veal calves live is just about the worst imaginable and is arguably the worst of any "food" animal. I take the Wiccan Rede seriously as I'm sure the authors do, and I strive to come closer to it every day with mixed success. In light of how miserably these baby animals live their short lives I don't think a recipe using their flesh should be included in any book that has "Wicca" in the title.

4 out of 5 stars Easy read for everyone, very general.......2004-07-28

Nice book, although I did find it a tad bit disappointing! Why?

I got the book before I got my two Tonk kittens, so it was an o.k. starter book.
The book talks a lot about the lovely characteristics about Tonkinese cats and to this I have to agree as I have here 2 very sweet, adorable and gentle purring kittens!

The book however, lacks information that I think are important. It does not mention in detail about the origins and the possible health problems that may occur or originate from the original parental breeds. This is important information to have if you are considering any purebred animal.

The book also covers very minimally on areas regarding pedigrees, various colours, points and torties (as breeders may have different abbreviations for the same colour) deciphering registration and pedigree papers and other documents. This is crucial information especially when talking to your breeder or prospective breeders about your preferences (if any) and about the quality of his animals.

The lack of clarity in the book about what is accepted or not accepted (either colour or healthy physical structure) by the various clubs and associations or what you should look out for when choosing a Tonk kitten is also disappointing. I think regardless of whether you are planning to show your cats or not, if they are of show quality, pet quality or breeding quality,it is good information to have, particularly if you are interested in the breed itself and not just simply owning a cat. Most importantly, it tells you how dedicated the breeder is to his animals and breeding them to produce healthy offspring and not using them as a money-making venture. This might be very important if you are getting your cats shipped to you.

The information about feeding, grooming and caring offered in the book can easily be found in a good book on cat ownership, without having to go specifically to this book.

Overall, I think the book offers a very general skim of Tonkinese cats. If you are seriously considering Tonks, I would recommend that you DO get this book to get a general idea, but also get a good book on good cat ownership as well as Linda Vousden's "Tonkinese Cats". These 3 books combined should give you a very interesting and thorough understanding of what buying and owning Tonks mean.
                Good Luck!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book -Very detailed, lots of information!.......2004-07-28

                Love the book.
I just got my own two little Tonks and I also own the other guide by Lorraine Shelton (ISBN 0793821924). Both together are a great help as my kittens are my first cats!

Vousden's book does go into great detail about genetics and selective breeding and what it means to breed true to standard. However, there is also tonnes of information for the novice Tonk cat owner, on all areas of healthcare, grooming, feeding and especially what to look out for or beware of when choosing a Tonk kitten.
If you are actually interested in the breed, this is a great book as not only does it cover the basics in detail, it covers the origins, possible drawbacks of the breed, personality characteristics and shows you examples of how to read your Tonk's papers and pedigree. It also tells you where the cats in the great photos in the book come from, which means you can actually contact the cattery yourself if you like what you see, as these catteries are well established. The appendixes at the back of the book are amazingly detailed and one can tell lots of research work has been invested and into compiling this book together.
It tells you not only the associations in Britain but also that in America and Europe and what characteristics are accepted or not accepted. The appendix also gives you up to date details on how to contact them and possible legal inquiries one might have when moving with the animals from one continent to another ( I moved with my cats from America to Canada and then to Germany)

Vousden has written a book for almost anyone interested in the breed, prospective Tonk owners, and also any novice who may one day consider breeding or attending cat shows as spectator or shower.

It does however take time to pore through the book or to do selective reading so you might want to (especially if you are novice) get a good book on good cat ownership that you could quickly flip through and perhaps also pick up Shelton's Tonk cat guide.

Overall, I think Vousden's book is a great reference for anyone interested in the breed as either pet, show or breeding quality;Tonk owner, propective Tonk owner, breeder or prospective breeder, to have at home!

I bought the book via Amazon.com because here in Belgium there are no specific books for this breed.
Because i'm a beginning breeder i find it very important to have the amount of knowledge necaissary before i start with a first litter...
This book is a very good guide for me (character, genetics, ...)

                5 out of 5 stars Informative, Illustrated & Fantastic.......2002-08-16

I recently purchased this book from Amazon as books on Tonkinese cats are not available in Australia. I was not disappointed. I have two Tonks with a litter due in a few weeks. This will be my only litter and I do not have the time to show, however I found that the book gave useful info. on these topics as well as plenty of useful info. for 'pet' owners. Tonks have only just begun to be accepted as a registered breed in Australia and I would have to say that they are a wonderful breed clearly outlined in Linda's book. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book for Cat Fanciers in BRITTAIN.......2001-07-13

Tonkinese Cats by Linda Voudsen is a good reference for Tonk lovers. My only regret is that it was written for English Tonkinese cats and not the ones accepted by the CFA here in the USA. If you are a Brittish Cat Fancier, you will find lots of pictures, descriptions of good tonks, a good treatise on the genetics and coat patterns..., health issues with special attention to problems associated with tonks. Also, there is a good section on what their cat shows look for. I wish they had a book this good for the United States since the recognized coat patterns and some of the criteria are different here.

2 out of 5 stars Book was overwhelming.......2000-11-29

My wife & I have a new Tonkinese kitten - and I searched for the word Tonkinese and found this book. After I got it, I was disappointed with it. While I agree with one of the other reviews here about the author being enthusiastic, I felt way overwhelmed.

It felt to me that this book was written more for a breeder than a "regular cat owner". It also felt like a "reference" book, more than a book you can just pick up and read.

It was well put together, but for me, I felt it was way more than I needed. Also, for the size of the book, $31 is a bit steep (which was the price when I wrote this). Shouldn't have been more than $13 or $14, I felt.

                Book Description

This definitive work is the first of its kind, an introduction to the quality and beauty of gemstones that assists in judging their value and price. Though there are many publications that deal with the mineralogical properties of gemstones, books that discuss the essence of their beauty, how to verify their quality, and how to judge their value are almost non-existent.

Using full-page, high-quality color photographs and a powerful system of quality and value assessment, the first chapter examines 24 gemstone varieties, explaining the subtle nuances that contribute to their unique beauty, the wide range of quality levels they occur in, common treatments, and how these factors interact to affect their value in the marketplace.

Chapter 2 discusses gemstones in the context of their relationship with people, from mining, cutting, and manufacturing, to buying and selling, wearing, and secondary markets.

While simple enough for a layperson to understand, with a glossary of gemological and trade terms, the concepts introduced in this book are powerful enough to be useful to members of the gemstone and jewelry industry, whether they be cutters, wholesalers, appraisers, or retailers.

The gem stone trade likes to keep the average guy from understanding the basics of judging quality and value. Suwa for the first time that I have seen in a gemstone book, gives the reader a peak under the covers on what determines gemstone quality and value. This book, as well as the others in the series from Suwa let the average person in on the very basic, understandable issues that determine quality in various stones. Suwa is willing to share with his readers how seasoned gemologists and the market in general value different gem stones, and the impact of things such as origin, carat weight, clarity, etc. I have not seen a single other publication, particularly as it relates to color gemstones, that is willing to put so clear a measure on value drivers for gem stones. Suwa broke the silence of the indusrty and put a stake in the ground.

This type of clarity does great benefit to the trade in gemstones by instilling confidence in the buyer that they can make informed purchase decisions. With out this guide, buyers must rely entirely on the sales pitch of the retailer in front of them at any particualr time.

I gave this book as a gift to my retailer that I generally buy from , and they are now using it regulary with their clients and say it has helped them enormously. The buyer can still spend what they want, they just spend their money smarter with the help of this book. No smoke and mirrors.

Can't wait until Volume 2 is avaliable!!

First, the photography is worldclass. The pictures of the jewelry alone is worth owning this beautiful book. Next, the
content is clearly organized, diplomatic and at the same time
simply informative on each gemstone. The passion and the desire
of the author shines through in his committment to supplying
a standard for the understanding and appreciation of wonderful,
gem quality gemstones. I will also acquire Volume 2 & 3 to
have a complete review of more than fifty gemstones to include an appreciation for the world's finest jewelry. Thank you Mr.Suwa.

1 out of 5 stars Gemstones: Quality and Value big price; bigger disapointment.......2002-05-08

The author begins with an excellent idea; divide each gemstone into three categories and illustrate those categories on a quality grid with full color photos. The author relies almost completely on the comparative images to illustrate his point. Unfortunately the photographs simply don't do the job. Except for one excellent photo at the beginning of each chapter Mr. Suwa's images are not just poor they are pathetic.
His first section on Aquamarine pp.14-17 serves to illustrate the point. The author begins with a rambling introductory essay of just four paragraphs. On the following page is an excellent full page photo of a lovely aquamarine. Following this p.17 attempts to lay out a quality grid of seventeen aquamarines. Unfortunately the stones all look the same, totally grayed out images of what, appear to be low grade commercial quality aquamarine. In fact, the images are so poorly printed that it is impossible to tell one quality from another. Mr. Suwa further illustrates the text with a "gem of value" photographed actual size usually somewhere between 5-10mm. Unfortunately the reader can barely see it never mind judge the stone and the photographs are uniformly poor.
The remainder of the book stumbles along in this same vein. A short essay, one good photograph followed by a carefully layed out grid of poorly photographed gemstones from which it is impossible to draw any conclusions about quality.
The text provides very little guidence for the would be collector. When he does say something about principals of connoisseurship the author fails to apply these principals consistently from gem to gem. He often drops a technical term but rarely defines it.
Perhaps the translation is somewhat to blame but at the price the author has little excuse for the quality of the photography.

This is the most often used book I continually return to for landscaping reference and guidance. It's well written and will have you on the way to improving your landscape after the first read. One reviewer mentions Rita is opinionated. This is true. So you'll have to read around some of the opinions and decide for yourself what holds true for your property.

If you need just one landscaping book, I would highly recommend this book. It has a great balance of ideas, pics, & text. It is well structured and organized.

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive text on planning a garden.......2003-05-22

                I admire Rita Buchanan's style.

In a time of the pre-digested, summarized 'Idiot's Guides', she addresses landscape design in a methodical and logical progression. The text doesn't get bogged down in species' names and planting plans, but instead opens our minds to the larger questions of overall goals and needs. As such, I have found this to be the perfect companion as I plan my garden, opening my mind to the wider possibilities that I hadn't considered.

Having said that, you might be disappointed if you are looking for a book to 'dip into' for rapid solutions. I have found this book more rewarding if you have 30 minutes to spare with a comfy chair and cup of coffee, rather than just a 3 minute break.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and well designed; sometimes too opinionated.......2000-11-13

The book is what its title says and that's good - a master guide to landscaping. While I respect Ms. Buchanan's opinions on matters of landscaping since she obviously is versed enough to complete this well done and comprehensive book, it seems to me that her opinions sometimes get in the way of common, useful, tried and true landscaping practices. Example: On page 229 she adamantly states, "...Disregard anyone who tells you to set hedge plants in a zigzag pattern...", yet the picture above depicts just that and, quite frankly, it's commonly recommended to do so. As a designer, I do use that technique for hedge planting because it creates a billowy effect and it's more visually interesting, in many instances. The point is, that statement is an opinion that may not be based on anything more than personal taste.

Having said that, it's an excellent and in-depth guide to the extensive field of landscaping and a very good book just to see what her educated opinions might be. Keep an open mind and refer also to other more task-specific books and expertise when faced with landscape challenges. This book certainly will entertain one with its views, many of them interesting and useful.

                5 out of 5 stars Very complete.......2000-07-10

An incredibly complete guide to landscaping your home with many illustrative photographs and diagrams. The author covers everything from the setting up landscaping goals to the techniques of putting in edgings, paths, fences and on to choosing and caring for plants. The author does not pull her punches, coming out, for example, clearly against landscape fabric. Although information on the plants themselves is limited, it is an excellent overall gardening book that can be supplemented by more detailed plant guides.

                    Book Description

Glossary of Typesetting Terms is an up-to-date reference book on the craft of typography. It organizes a dictionary and a style guide into a single, one-stop resource.

Prepared by a team of leading professionals—a designer, an editor, compositors, and production managers—this glossary will be valuable to anyone who works in publishing or printing for its definitions of typographical terms and concise treatment of typographical style.

The glossary adds important details to discussions of typography that are covered more generally in editorial style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style. It is indispensable to anyone who prepares text for a living, including those who implement their own typesetting decisions with the aid of word-processing and page-layout software.

This manual furnishes a common technical vocabulary for specialists and nonspecialists alike. More than 900 entries provide up-to-date meanings for traditional terms like kerning, bleed, and thumbnail and definitions of new phrases like global search and replace, H & J (hyphenation and justification), and idiot file that have been developed to describe the role of computer technology in typesetting.

Eight appendixes offer additional guidance. The house style sheets of a major typesetter provide a sample checklist of items that affect the way in which words are composed into professional-quality type. Other appendixes cover families of type, the parts of a book, diagrams of the parts of a letter, coding and marking a manuscript in the precise language of typesetters, writing specifications for tables, proofreaders’ marks, and special characters.

No other reference book makes the vocabulary and practices of contemporary typesetting so accessible.

I'm a Japanese, typesetter, and bookdesigner for English books. Designing and typesetting on my screen by myself is fine, but whenever I talk to my editors, I need some English special terms. Then this book helps me very much. It's easy to find technical terms. This book should be next to The Chicago Manual on your desk.

This book is only as good as AND NO BETTER THAN first base. Trust me folks, I've been there. True, only once and yes it was about 18 years ago but I'm no dummy. The title is a clear cut case of the ol' Bait and Switch. Most of the book ends up being about one time when the author's basement flooded and how it ruined all his old "Prince Valiant" comics.

5 out of 5 stars Smart and passionate writing from a man who understands........2002-02-06

This book was written with a depth of understanding of the human psyche that only a poet/psychologist could produce. When one reads an average biography one normaly can only gleen snippets of the reasoning in the subject's actions-Pat Ehlen has let me in on the reasoning of a man who's influence can be felt in all of modern black history. A terrific read.

Though I was unfamiliar with Fanon before reading this book; I found this biography to be fascinating. Well written and very interesting.

                          5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2001-01-15

A wonderful read all the way through. I knew little of Fanon's work outside the seminal "Wretched of The Earth" and even less of Ehlen with the exception of the compelling short prose of "Aunties". But after a friend reccomended this provocative, exceptionally well written biography I plan to investigate both Ehlen and Fanon thoroughly. An excellent piece of writing--I reccomend it to all.
