Customer Reviews:
an enjoyable light read.......2007-08-15
The perfect book to curl up with when you are tired. You will not have to think much when you read this book, the author's habit of spelling everything out for you, makes this a nice light read.
The Best Yet.......2007-08-09
I love the gothic elements of this entry in the Needlecraft Mysteries. Betsy and Jill head off for a "restful" vacation at a remote lodge, only to fall right into a mystery. Or is it just a product of Betsy's overactive imagination? The duo must rely on their wits and Betsy's unerring talent for ferreting out the truth to figure out what's going on.
I like how Ferris continues to add new dimensions to her characters. Betsy struggles with her pull to solve mysteries while also dealing with the emotional aspects of solving crimes. Will she fight her nature to find peace of mind, or continue to help others find out the truth?
One thing that bugs me is in the last few books, everyone (particularly Jill) seems to be too solicitous of Betsy. In the early books, this made sense, because her sister had just died. But now, c'mon! She's a grown woman and doesn't need someone "tucking her in" and telling her she looks tired and needs to rest every 15 pages. Let Betsy stand on her own two feet -- she (and the series) will be stronger for it!
Wonderful entertainment.......2006-08-14
Kept me awake to the wee hours--thank God I am retired !1 I want more mysteries like this.
When Vacations Go Bad.......2004-08-24
Betsy Devonshire owner of Crewel World, a needlecraft shop in Excelsior, Minnesota is tired. She's been having nightmares for awhile and wants to get away for a rest.
What better way to rest then to go with her friend, deputy Jill Cross to a "stitch-in" at Naniboujou Lodge. Or at least it started out peaceful, as Betsy, working on a project in the lounge falls asleep and wakes up to find another woman sitting in the room with her.
Sharon Kaye Owen's, a famous needle crafter tells her she's there to try and reconcile with her husband. They had broken up after Sharon developed allergies which prevented her from participating in almost any thing.
Betsy is horrified when she later goes up to her room and finds the body of Sharon Kaye Owen's stretched across her bed. But it's not as bad, as when she gets Jill and the Lodge owner to go back with her, only to find the body has disappeared.
Was Betsy dreaming? Having another of her nightmares. Sharon Owens wasn't scheduled to even be at the lodge and she hadn't checked in and no one else had seen her.
But Betsy is sure of what she saw and decides to investigate, to prove not only that she had found a body and that Sharon was dead, but to uncover who the killer might be among the other guests.
There doesn't seem a shortage of people, including Sharon's family, her ex-husband Frank and their two kids, Liddy & Doogie. Most of the other needlecrafters at the stitch-in were excited to have Sharon Owens come, but they didn't like her personally.
With the help of Jill and local Sheriff Goodman, Betsy uncovers clues which lead to a solution to an almost perfect crime.
Highlights:
The friendship that has developed between Betsy and Jill. There is a big age difference, I assume Jill is in her thirty's and Betsy is 55, but they have a lot in common and Jill is just the type of friend everyone needs, especially when getting over a bad divorce and the murder of your only family. "Betsy's sister Margot, who left her Crewel World."
Godwin, being left in charge of the shop while she's gone and encounters a major disaster. This guy is one of the best characters in the book, he is always very funny.
The mystery is very good in this one. I didn't guess either the killer or the reason for the murder.
Lowlights:
I like the needlecraft information but in this books with so many experts gathered together, it was very confusing, because except for cross-stitching and knitting, a lot of the other needlecraft projects they were working on and talking about, I didn't have a clue as to what they were. This made some of the sections hard to follow.
Because this story took place far away from Excelsior, most of the regulars were missing and they usually add quite a bit to each story, so I missed them. .
Overall a very good read.
Pretty good read.......2004-03-13
Not one you can't lay down, but a pretty good story. I liked the characters and tho I'm not a x-stitcher it was fiber related. I'll probably read others by her. I wonder if she's going to write a spinning theme? Butchery at the Black Sheep Gathering?

A great reference and place to revisit Two Moons.......2001-02-09
I've followed Elfquest since the days of the black and white oversize comincs, through the Marvel reprints, and then onto the Donning and other color volume reprints, back to the comics. The series has been around over 25 years and the multi-generational story can be hard to follow if you're gifted with something in the middle, or even luckier, all 15 volumes simulatenously. This is a great reference for that, and it helps with the nuances that might escape you on the first read. It's also good for the stuff that's gone out of print or is hard to find.
It's also a great reference for those us who just want to drift through the pages and enjoy. It's almost as good as re-reading the stories themselves if you don't have time to savor the story itself.
the book for the true elfquest fan.......2000-03-29
This book really helps you understand the characters and plot a lot more. if you are like me then this book is for you.
If you don't know what's going on this book is a must have.......1999-09-20
I got this book as a present and I'm glad I did. I had just gotten into elfquest and had no idea what was going on and this book gives summaries of events in the comics, past character, and present character summaries. It is very well written and pays great attention to detail.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference.......2005-09-26
If you or your family is taking prescription drugs this is an essential reference to own. Although its focus is on prescriptions drugs it also covers some non-prescription pain relivers (asperin, tyrenol, motrin, etc). The typeface is confortable to read...not too small. This is a pocket-sized book but thick. Not something to put in a back pocket or purse but easy enought to carry around and light. So inexpensive, anyone can own it. This edition is based on the 2003 Physicans Desk Reference. There will be a new edition due out in November 2005.
Great value!.......2005-08-02
This reference is awesome, and the price can't be beat. It is loaded with information, and at this price it's a must have for all nurses.
An Essential Tool for Caregivers.......2004-03-07
"This must be a mistake! How could his drug costs rise from $150 per month to $1101 in just three weeks?" My hand shook while I read the pharmacy bill.
The bill was accurate. In only three weeks at an Alzheimer's care unit, my father's drug expenses had soared an incredible 734%. And, the way I saw it, his quality of life had decreased about the same percentage. Walking and talking when he entered, he now spent his days in a wheelchair, unable to walk and drugged, in a constant stupor.
"I've got to do something." The thought repeated over and over in my head. "How can this be?" Then a quick trip to the grocery brought the help I needed. It came in the form of a thick paperback book, The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs.
The PDR Pocket Guide provides tons of information for all prescription drugs currently on the market. Information includes:
a. generic equivalents,
b. why the drug is prescribed,
c. how it should be taken,
d. when it should not be taken,
e. side effects and special warning, and
f. possible interactions with other drugs and food.
The PDR is available through Amazon.com, or you may find a copy like I did at your local grocery or bookstore. Jam-packed with almost 1700 pages of information, this paperback is a surprisingly affordable $6.99.
Using the pharmacy's bill as a list of medications, I read the PDR report for each drug my father was using. What I found astonished me.
Two of fifteen drugs prescribed were being used "off-label." One was specifically contraindicated for use with Alzheimer's patients. Two others were from drug families that I had previously pointed out in my father's list of allergic reactions.
Without this "pocket" guide, I'd never have understood what was happening to my father.
Get one today. Use it. It could save the life of someone you love dearly.

Beans Without the Farts.......2005-08-06
I found this book very useful and informative on preparing dishes with beans. It covers preparation for all beans you would find in your local supermarket.
One subject the book covers is gas. A lot of people find beans very tasty and filling but find the gas too embarassing if not repulsing to the point where they will never eat beans again. This book covers the topic and even tells you what to add to any bean recipe to alviate the problem without changing taste. I personnaly knew this could be done but wasn't totally sure until I bought the book. Although everybody's body is different, it worked for me.
The only reaon this book gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because although it talks about all beans and how to soak them, most of the recipes call for "canned beans," rather than cups of soaked beans that you would have prepared. This I found confusing at first. With a little common sense and reading however, you would know that 1 15oz can of kidney beans is the same as kidney beans you soaked and cooked.
Not What I Expected.......2005-02-14
I ordered this book because I really like to cook and love legumes and my pressure cooker. Perhaps I should have looked elsewhere.
The recipes in here are nicely put together with the nutrition information and there is quite a bit of information on legumes. However, I found that there were too many Southwestern Chili type recipes for my taste. If you like to make chili and lots of Mexican and Southwestern inspired dishes this might be the cookbook for you. That is not to say that there aren't some Mediterranean and Caribbean inspired recipes but it just seems that the Tex-Mex and Southwestern flavors beat out the others.
Also, I happen to loathe margarine and avoid it at all costs. I love to cook and would much rather use less butter or a combination of canola oil and butter or olive oil or even an olive oil spray -- anything but margarine. Not only does this cookbook call for margarine specifically, but diet margarine. In the same vein I understand that the author is an M.S., R.D. but I really don't think there is a need to use Fat-Free Dressing for everything. I also didn't like that one of the recipes called for onion soup mix. I have never purchased onion soup mix and try my best not to purchase lots of processed foods. Thus, I get very uneasy when a cookbook uses these types of ingredients.
One more irksome tidbit was the fact that there weren't any recipes or mention of other beans such as the anasazi, adzuki, flageolet, cranberry to name a few.
This cookbook might not be the best cookbook for someone looking for a wider repertoire of legume recipes than your Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook can offer.
For More Healthful Eating.......2002-10-28
With 150 recipes, including a handful of bean-based desserts, this book will last quite a while before you run out of ideas for bean-based dishes. From a simple black bean dip to Hoppin' John, this book leaves no excuse for not including beans in your diet.
One of a Kind.......2000-12-17
For the beginning bean eater, this book has it all. The recipes are quick and easy, as well as delicious. I took the Crockpot Vegetable Chili to a party last night and it got rave reviews. Haven't gotten the nerve to try the Blueberry Bean Muffins yet, but they're next on my list!
One of the best cookbooks I've ever purchased!.......1998-12-14
I checked out this book from the library and tried some of the recipes in it. After having had great results with all of them, I knew I got to buy this book. I recently decided to ease into a vegetarian lifestyle and this book has made the transition a lot easier.

Not enough of the animal figurines.......2004-01-11
Good reference if you are looking to identify dolls, but very few of the dogs, mice, horses, and wildlife the company produced are listed, which included, unfortunately, none of the ones I was looking for. The pictures are very clear and the price guide is easy to follow, however.
This Book is a Collectable all by itself!.......1999-10-04
Josef Originals were figurines from my childhood and are a wonderful collectable to pass down through generations. This well illustrated book will delight any Josef collector. It begins with a short written history and jumps into many pages of clear pictures. Each page is a delight to view. This guide has a price listing in the back. Collect all three "Josef" books by the Authors Jim & K Whitaker. These books are indeed collectibles in themselves.
A wonderful pictorial guide to Josef Original figurines.......1998-10-10
I love this book. The photos are very clear and sharp. It has a great and easy to read price guide and background on the artist. Invaluable book if you collect Josef Original figurines!

Awesome! The Cure for a Green Thumb!.......2004-01-31
I got this book as a Christmas present, and wow, it's a gardener's dream. Instead of running out to the gardening shop to get expensive pesticides or plant foods and what have you, this book tells you what common household products you've already got around the house can be used to solve your gardening problems...saving time, money, and definitely saving you lots of aggravation. Plus, the tips are all environmental so you're not using hazardous pesticides, just friendly products like Maxwell House coffee and Pam cooking spray and Coca-Cola and whatever else you have around the house. This book is truly a must for any home gardener. I don't know how I ever got along without it.
Not a gardening book, rather a trivia book!.......2003-12-07
The contents are not reflective of the title. A large part of the text covers non gardening trivia. This book would be about half it's size, with the unrelated items taken out.
If you are looking for a book covering such topics as Cracker Jack, Gilligan's Island, Love Boat, the history of the Slinky toy (almost two pages), Go-Jo hand cleaner, Animal Crackers and KoolAid (each a full page), cap guns and similar, then this is the book for you.
