Book Description
In this second collection of mysteries set in seventh century Ireland, Peter Tremayne again presents fifteen tales of Sister Fidelma of Cashel-sister to the King of Muman, a religieuse, and advocate of the Brehon courts. Most appearing for the first time in book form, these tales cover the time period from Fidelma's youth-while studying law at the Bardic school of the Brehon Morran of Tara-to shortly before the events of Tremayne's most recent novel, The Haunted Abbot. These fifteen tales of murder, mayhem, and mystery provide new details about the ways and mores of the complex, fascinating society of seventh century Ireland as well as the characters themselves. The ultimate book for Tremayne's ever-growing legion of fans.

A Collection of Short Stories.......2007-02-03
Peter Tremayne is the fiction pseudonym of a well-known authority on the ancient Celts, who has utilised his knowledge of the Brehon law system and 7th-Century Irish society to create a new concept in detective fiction.
The Sister Fidelma novels are taking on almost cult proportions and are becoming ever more popular with each offering from the author, whose obvious knowledge of the times and subjects he writes about shines out like a beacon on the shore.
A second collection of short stories featuring Sister Fidelma, the sharp-witted religious sleuth who tackles the most baffling of crimes in her other role as advocate of the law courts of Ireland, using the ancient Brehon Law system.
Didn't Read.......2006-11-03
I'm sorry, I've never read any of PeterTremaine's books. I buy them as gifts for my daughter-in-law. I cannot express an opinion.

Author should have read the canon material........2003-06-12
This is well known to be one of the worst Shadowrun novels written to date. There are a lot of side stories that are never explained, the introduction character has absolutely nothing to do with the story later on. In many cases he simply ignored what has been written about Shadowrun but in the novels and in the role-playing game. Part of his introduction hook was to give pity to a dwarf that used to be human but goblinized. In the canon material for Shadowrun that didn't happen to dwarves and elves, only to trolls and orks. The ending of the book just feels completely wrong as well. More or less everybody loses but they all seem content with that. Only reason I'd suggest reading this is to see what not to do.
Solid and Refreshingly Gritty.......2003-05-23
For entry level talent in the Shadowrun Universe, Pollata's freshman attempt is very much an enjoyable, intelligent book. There are a few lingering plot holes, and certain things that are unnescessary and don't make sense (the Ruby the Razor backstory, the Spanish Ork encrypted writing) but overall the characters were memorable, the action was intense and most of the plot was fun. I look forward to the next one, where all the loose ends get tied up.
Jake Armitage.......2000-11-01
For me, Shadowboxer was the best book I have read. I thought that Pollotta did a marvoulus job of portraying the Shadowrun univers, and of describing things. I can't wait for him to write another Shadowrun novel.
Worst book of the Shadowrun line!.......2000-02-05
I found Shadowboxer to be a horrible book--badly structured, poorly written, and all-around unsatisfying. Some of the charactersare intriguing, but the ending was a massive letdown, the whole tone of the book was far more depressing than I like to see even in a novel of this genre, and the level of violence was extreme. I have read almost every other book in the Shadowrun line, and I have liked some and disliked others, but never have I felt like throwing the book across the room upon finishing it--until Shadowboxer. Reader beware!
Now that's what I call a Shadowrun book ..........1999-12-13
Read this one! Together with the Secrets of Power trilogy, Striper Assassin and Shadowplay, Shadowboxer is definitely one of the Shadowrun books with the best characters in it. Though it takes place in a couple of unusual locations, it creates a lot of "Shadowrun atmosphere". The only thing that bothers me is that it doesn't have a real ending; at the last page, there are still a lot of loose ends. The whole book doesn't really feel like a novel on its own, more like the first part of a series. I think it would be cool if Nick Polotta wrote another episode to follow "Shadowboxer" - I for one would certainly look forward to reading it!

The Original Heart of Darkness.......2006-11-23
A ripping great book with a fast-moving, well told story line. Erik Spangler is a free-lance agent used by the Allies in WWII, but strictly for his own reasons. Incredibly capable at espionage, able to move in Nazi territory and into and out of concentration camps, Spangler is driven by his own personal demons. I never could figure why Hollywood never made a mini-series of this book. Although at the time it would have been hard to get it on TV, the weave of the story would be almost impossible to get onto the big screen and do the book any kind of justice.
Spangler is a driven man with allegainces only to a few friends and an overriding hatred of Fascism. If you are looking for a really great WWII read - this is it.

great book (for one reader at least).......1998-10-15
The Italian poet Eugenio Montale wrote in his Nobel acceptance speech that any book spawns a virtual ideal reader, the book's "target". Well, I wonder whether on earth there's a better atavar of this book's target than me. I read this book a long time ago and it marked my perception of a decisive hisorical as well as existential moment. The description of Nazi-occupied Europe is the most vivid and convincing I have ever read or otherwise experienced. You have to read the German, English and Russian newspapers of those years to get the same flavour, except that here the apocalyptic weirdness and ambiguity of the whole are masterfully exploded. It is an eerie, intense book.

Book Description
Chi Kung, as well as being an effective means of stress management and healing, is a useful technique for developing the general fitness of the mind and body. This book explores the principles and philosophy of Chi Kung, explaining the potential benefits and then taking the reader through a series of main Chi Kung exercises, all fully illustrated, which can be practiced at home.
Customer Reviews:
chikung.......2007-07-16
this book was very useful. Actually got this book as a present for my mother, but i found it very useful and interesting. so i too got one. thanks to amazon!!
Simple yet Profound.......2007-06-03
A complete guide to everyone about the art of Chi Kung. The auther Master Wong Kiew Kit explains how to use the art to promote energy for physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The techniques are so simple yet extremely powerful. It's a great book I recommend it to everyone, beginner or advanced level.
Good Introduction.......2007-03-12
This book gives an overview of Chi Kung ( or Qi Gong , depending on the spelling,etc.). It explains what chi is, what chi can do, and what exercises can help. There are several drawings of various chi kung exercises, chapters on various ailments and what can be done to cure them, as well as several real cases. Wong Sifu is truly an expert. As a student of Chi Kung and Tai Chi Chuan I can say this book supplements training ( especially helpful is the body chart with the various meridians).
The only negative things are that there are no photos ( although the drawings are reasonably good) and more important there's no information on diet. If you have no problems or just a simple strain/sprain diet probably won't matter, but if your problem is more serious, such as constantly feeling cold, sleep apnea, low sex drive, etc. diet will play a major part in the cure. That brings up one other problem; this is a book and not a real, living Sifu( master). As such it should be used only as an introduction to Chi Kung and not as a guide to get better. I'd strongly recommend you find a real Tai Chi/Chi Kung master and practice with him/her. Only if you're hundreds of miles away from the nearest school, or you're broke , should you try to "learn" from this book. Use it as aguide.
That said, this is one of the better books on Chi Kung.
Master Teacher Indeed.......2006-11-24
I have noticed that fine teachers dispel tensions and apprehensions in their students, while ineffectual teachers positively strain to load them on. Sifu Wong is totally at home with his art; humorous, warm, and supporting. He never communicates a whisper of doubt about the prospect of teaching essential Chi Kung through the medium of a modest seeming book. I was immediately hooked on the practice. Sifu Wong's own attitude is undiminished childlike astonishment and wonder at the power of Chi Play. One does not want to stop! It is this infectiously joyous, self-aware, but un-self-conscious spirit which truly welcomes and encourages the student.
Long on talk;short on walk.......2006-08-15
This book has a lot of text on chi as far as it relates to body meridians, and various expressions of chi in sex, and disease. It covers the more esoteric parts of chi if your interest is along that line. There are good graphics to go along with these explanations. The book is very nicely broken down but I have to admitt that I'm not one for flowery chapter headings that sound more like vague generalizations than specific divisions. But this may just be my personal preference.
Where the book fails to me is that it does not show you the cycle of chi gung exercises to develop the internal strength it highly praises. There are a few specific movements that are "prescribed" for certain maladies or goals but these are not going to be very useful without having taken the time to develop the basis for such use. I've been involved with the martial arts, aikido and jujitsu, for over 20 years and I've been doing chi kung for about half that time. To get anywhere near the type of results this book mentions you have to develop the full cycle of chi kung exercises through a regimen of daily practice. "Spot" applications of particular exercises will lack the chi development that comes from daily practice...it would be like going in to a gym and expecting to come out looking like Atlas after one visit. Following the advise in this book by itself, based on my experience, would be very frustrating to people.
A better "how to" book for chi kung is "The Way of Energy" by Master Lam Kam Chuen. Master Chuen offers a very specific and practical development of the chi kung exercises from beginner to advanced. Drawings and explanations are easy to understand and not poorly translated from Chinese. There are also adequate healthcare warnings as several of the moves can be quite a strain on the circulatory system.

Some Good ideas.......2007-01-16
This is the first Gooseberry Patch cookbook I've owned. Flipping through it, I've found most of the recipes to be simple crowd pleasers. My in-laws were visiting this past weekend and I made 3 recipes from the book. 2 of them turned out very well, and the third was truly awful (the macaroni and cheese). As a reviewer for another book in this series noted, sometimes saving time sacrifices taste. Overall a good buy and I'm sure I'll use more recipes in the near future.

Best of all, the book is filled with color photos, info-packed sidebars and fun facts to make caring for your pet easy and enjoyable.

For those animal lovers less inclined to adopt a furry friend, finding up-to-date reptile information and ownership instruction can be a challenge. Karen Rosenthal's The Iguana: An Owner's Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet is both a perfect start for any new or potential owner and a quality-of-care check for seasoned owners. The Iguana covers everything from selecting an ectotherm and understanding its environmental needs to discussions on behavior and a glossary of relevant terminology. While the book is solid in content, it is always a good idea to investigate other resources for further discussion on controversial issues such as protein intake levels and keeping iguanas as free-roaming house pets. Rosenthal's book helps with this as well, and the bibliography is a great springboard to continued exploration.

Don't buy it.......2003-02-11
I agree completely with Harmony's review of this book. I recently purchased it at a pet store and returned it within an hour of buying it. The information is outdated and inaccurate. James Hatfield'd "Green Iguana-The Ultimate Owner's Manual" is superior by far, purchase this instead.

Book Description
Peter Hornsby's Decorated Biscuit Tins tells the story of a highly successful marketing technique operated in Britain, the United States, and many other parts of the world from the Victorian period up to the second World War. Biscuit or cookie makers discovered that their products sold better and lasted longer if they were packed in tins. The first plain, simple containers were replaced by elaborately decorated printed tins, many made to represent a whole range of fascinating domestic and family objects. These colorful and novel tins helped sell the biscuits and then remained in the home to be used as storage boxes or played with as toys, until they became the source of interest for today. Thousands of designs were made by the world's leading biscuit makers, and examples can still be discovered in trunks in Grannie's attic, filled with seed packets in the garden shed, on a shelf in the garage, or in any number of antique shops.

Great book for birders.......2007-02-21
This is a great book for anyone interested in backyard birding, no matter what size your backyard may be. There are articles on how to attract, feed, and house different birds.
Fun.......2007-02-16
I like this book. I'm a new bird watcher. I've made some of the projects mentioned in this book and they work quite well.
Excellent book for bird-loving gardeners!.......2007-01-12
Numerous, easy to follow instructions on how to create wide variety of projects! Includes illustrations also. Must have for those that want to attract birds to their gardens without spending a fortune buying items ready-made. Would be a good resource for those wanting to learn how to make garden produces to sell also.
Projects for the Birder's Garden.......2006-11-28
The book arrived promptly and was a good bargain price. It had very good information on attracting and taking care of birds.
GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR LIBRARY - RECOMMEND HIGHLY.......2005-09-07
I have been a "birder" for over 45 years and a gardener (in a very sloppy, haphazard way) for just about as long. This is a wonderul work that fits well into my hobbies. It is simple, practical and a joy to work with. As another reviewer pointed out, the ideas put forth in this book actually work! I was also thrilled that most of these projects were ones that my four grandsons were more than able to help with and in doing so, actually taught them something. I happen to live in a rural area, infact, I live in the middle of the woods. Most of the projects in this book were non-intrusive and blended in well with the natural look that my wife and I strive for. Recommend you add this one to your library. Now if I can just train my nine barn cats......

Book Description
Spinoza in English,/i is the first bibliography to document the entire 300-year record of books, monographs, dissertations and articles in English on Benedict Spinoza, as well as all translations of his works into English. Arranged alphabetically by author or editor, and internally cross-referenced in the case of anthologies and 'replies', this bibliography cites its own sources where appropriate and, in many cases, provides details on how to obtain out-of-print titles and unpublished dissertations. Additionally, it restores or corrects a good deal of earlier bibliographic detail and, beginning with titles from the mid-1800s, presents the citations in a uniform style.
This second edition adds hundreds of citations, including dozens of titles hitherto overlooked, thus bringing the total to nearly 2700 on the main level (with hundreds of secondary references to later editions and reprints). It also provides an index and, occasionally, an abstract when the author's title inadequately describes the contents. As the only source of its kind, this bibliography is an indispensable reference tool for research libraries and individual scholars concerned with the life and works of Spinoza. Wayne Boucher's introduction is augmented by a preface by Professor Manfred Walther.
--the most complete bibliography of works in English on Spinoza
--enlarged, corrected and improved from first edition with numbered entries
--uniquely comprehensive, current and authoritative
--numbered entries and subject/title index for easy reference

Book Description
A thought-provoking meditation on the connections between landscape, race, and family
It was on his third or fourth trip there that the poet C. S. Giscombe grew aware of the space Canada had staked out in his imagination. Giscombe later spent a winter with his family in British Columbia, and his time there provides a lens through which he interrogates his preoccupation with Canada's otherness. Giscombe writes that "border crossings are always sexy. And racial." And so this book is filled with both actual and metaphoric exploration--and his travels serve as points of departure for a series of riffs on racial, national, physical, and psychological borders.
At the heart of this book is the author's ambivalent pursuit of John Robert Giscome, a man who may or may not be a relative. John R., as Giscombe calls him, was a black Jamaican explorer who flourished in British Columbia during the last half of the nineteenth century. Giscombe documents the places that John R. passed through, and he uncovers stories about mining, pioneer life, and even cannibalism. Giscombe likes to imagine John R. as a "self-aware outsider," and that status comes to seem more important--more interesting--than any historical truth.
Into and Out of Dislocation is an intriguing and wryly told travel memoir by a writer Henry Louis Gates called a "major figure in contemporary African American letters."
Customer Reviews:
Crossing and re-crossing the border(s).......2000-07-22
In his travel memoir/meditation, Into and Out of Dislocation, C.S. Giscombe takes us not just back to the Bristish Columbian landscape of his long poem Giscome Road, but also traces the routes of other journeys and the geography of both "home" and "away from home." With Giscombe, the reader wends her way by bicycle, train, auto, boat and rarely by airplane to Oxford, Jamaica, Victoria, B.C., Prince George, B.C., Vancouver, Seattle, Bloomington, IL, Ithaca, NY, etc. The author sets off on long-distance solo bicycle adventures, his guiding principle seemingly always to push further. Giscombe pays little mind to chronology when meditating on his experiences in various locations. All journeys seem to turn back upon themselves, bump up against other times and places, until they blur together into one continuous quest along the particular edges of landscape, of family and heredity, and of cultural and racial complexity. The author's formal task is to research the "facts" about John R. Giscome, the Jamaican miner, explorer and possible relation whose name graces several geographical features near Prince George, B.C. The "facts" that we finally stumble upon, however, are those of visibility and invisibility with their attendant pleasures, accomodations, and responsibilities. Along the way there is much talk of miscegenation, bears, good and bad restaurants, and even Big Foot. This book is a thinking person's delight.
