An okay first book........2005-04-10
The strength of this first book was the depiction of the locale. The characters, particularly Tal, June and Henry had some interesting points but could have been much stronger. A major weakness was that I figured out the killer relatively early on. But, I didn't figure out the motive, so a definite point there. Overall, it was a good first book but I'll hope to see great improvement with the second book.
A wished for sinfully delightful book.......2004-10-16
Are you looking for an enjoyable read that introduce you to realistic characters while providing mystery? This book meets that criteria.
This book provides small-town nuance with an edge. The heroine (Tal Jefferson) returns home to reappraise her career as an attorney. While home, the justice system once more engages her to represent a defendant in a local murder. The reader slowly sees Tal energized as she comes to terms with her case and her past.
Engaging characters are introduced in such a manner that I found them not only realistic but so that I wanted to know more about them and their motives.
Tal and the other characters become enmeshed in a struggle tainted by small community loyalties and connections. Hidden agendas must be examined to find answers that will help Tal present her case.
Ms. Dunham writes with a lively style that begs to be read. We are not burdened by unnecessary details and hollow characters. Does this style work? If my reading this book late into the night is any indication, then yes.
I highly recommend this book to mystery readers and any genre reader who wants to be entertained by a well-written intelligent book with soul.
Fabulous first mystery.......2004-10-11
This is a terrific first book! I loved it!
Tal Jefferson has returned home after a terrible loss in a capital murder case. She left her big-city law practice and has returned to the small Georgia town where she was raised. She has been hiding out in the house Miss Ena left to her. Booze has become her best friend.
Then she is appointed as the attorney for Crystal in a local murder case. Tal knows the only reason she was chosen is that everyone is sure Crystal is guilty and they want a slam-dunk case. What they didn't count on was Tal getting her act together to give Crystal a proper defense. Her way of making up for her last mistake.
Henry, the local coroner and Tal's friend, gets his wife's cousin June to come help Tal out. She takes over Tal's life and office, and soon Tal wonders how she ever survived without her! That's not to say they don't get on each other's nerves.
Unfortunately Crystal won't help Tal out with any details of the case. She is very protective of her daughter Desiree. Tal isn't sure what Desiree has to do with this case.
Soon Tal finds herself untangling a web of deceit and trying to determine who is the father of whom and who is sleeping with whom! She knows the answers to those questions will help her figure out this case.
Ms. Dunham has done a great job with her first in this series. I can't wait to read the next one! Her characters are very well written and she knows the area that she has written about. It feels very authentic.
The mystery is hidden well with plenty of red herrings, and I found myself constantly picking the book back up to read another chapter! I highly recommend it!
Wishful Sinful.......2004-10-10
Wishful Sinful
Patricia Cromwell? No. Daniel Steele? No. However, somewhere in between, is a new writer of southern intrigue. Ms. Dunham's staccato dialog matches the pace and the plot. Her protagonist, Talbot Jefferson, a young hardheaded female criminal lawyer reared in the charm of the Old South, returns home to Wynnton, Georgia. There she plans to hide from the world, after failing to keep her innocent client off death row. Once home, she unexpectedly finds herself defending a confessed murderess.
As the author opens each new door, she introduces new and real life characters. Some of them lure us with the sweet charm of the South. It is as though we were strolling through a flower garden in the twilight of the day, when the sky is neither day or night and the air is still and laden with the sweet scent of Magnolia blossoms. Others, cloaked in the same mantel of charm, are demonic and their hearts full of evil. Though never quite sure, which is which, Tal digs into their lives, lives that have changed since they were schoolmates twenty years earlier. Her fear of repeated failure, curiosity and determination drive her forward as she uncovers more and more of the sins of Wynnton. Some are small some are large. All are evil acts of those struggling for power, power at any cost.
In the end, our heroine joins the cotillion and she too dances with evil masquerading as charm and deceit. Who is the murderer? Will Tal survive?
An excellent read! I'm looking forward to the next book.

After reading Wishful Sinful..........2004-09-18
I can't wait for the next Tal Jefferson novel!
Tal Jefferson has come home to Wynnton, GA, running away from her big city past and a mistake she can't forget. She's asked to represent a childhood friend. Being back in a courtroom is the last thing she wants, but Tal pulls herself out of the bottle and starts looking for answers. What she finds is Wynnton is home to a lot of secrets...secrets some people would like to leave uncovered. Secrets somebody is willing to kill for.
Tal Jefferson is a fantastic heroine. A woman of integrity who's made mistakes. A three-dimensional character you won't forget.

Consolidation of the 2nd Three Garrett Books.......2005-11-05
Since most of Cook's Garrett books are long out of print and very difficult to come by, you might end up having to buy this consolidation to find the individual stories. This book, "Garrett, P.I.," is the 2nd of 3 consolidations (so far). The others are "The Garrett Files" and "Garrett Investigates." This book contains the 2nd three stories in the Garrett series: "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," and "Red Iron Nights." "The Garrett Files" contains the 1st three: "Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," and "Cold Copper Tears." "Garrett Investigates" has the last three so far consolidated: "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat." The remaining two books ("Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols") still appear to be in print on their own. As was the 1st consolidation ("The Garrett Files"), this book is well bound, has good quality paper, and is well cut. As a pure average of my ratings for the three contained stories, I rate this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. My individual reviews follow:
"Old Tin Sorrows:" Excellent 4th in Cook's Garrett Series. If this isn't the best of the whole Garrett series, it's right up there fighting for the slot. For all intents and purposes, there's no Dead Man in this book: it's all Garrett, with some support from Morley and a couple of appearances from Saucerhead and the Dojango triplets. It's got good pacing and keeps you scratching your head trying to figure out what's going on all the way to the end. It's also one of the darkest books in the series. Nasty stuff. But, it explains why Garrett is so fixated on his picture of Eleanor in later books. Excellent, excellent book. I rate it at 5 stars out of 5.
"Dread Brass Shadows:" Very Good 5th in Cook's Garrett Series. Unlike the previous book, this one has a lot more Dead Man in it. Unfortunately, as a counterbalance, the pacing is a bit uneven (nothing horrible, just noticeable). This book also introduces Winger. Alas, Cook's portrayal of her is inconsistent. From scene to scene, she varies from competent to incompetent at specific tasks. For instance, in one scene, she's not all that good at hand-to-hand combat. Yet, in another scene, she defeats someone whom Garrett would be afraid to tackle. Ditto for her tracking ability: at one point, she's essentially blind to what's going on around her. At another, she's picking out people Garrett misses. It's a shame, since she plays such a large part in the book (basically replacing Morley and Saucerhead). Given that, I rate the book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.
"Red Iron Nights:" Very Good 6th in Cook's Garrett Series. It's a good book, but the pacing could use some work. Also, Cook introduces several minor plot elements and does very little with them until the end. One of them, having to do with Morley, he doesn't do anything with (like explain it) at all. Regarding recurring motifs in the series, in this book, Cook introduces Chodo's daughter and the Parrot. His introduction of the Parrot is disappointing considering its prevalance in later books (if you don't know to watch for it, you'd miss it entirely). But, still, overall, a very good book. I rate it at 4 stars out of 5.

The Fall ofthe House of Ten Little Indians.......2006-09-30
Old Tin Sorrows is arguable the darked volume in Glen Cook's Garrett, P.I. series. And I don't mean the snarky dark humor that marked the previous volumes. This time everyone from the ghost to Morley the vegetarian assassin is having a bad hair day. Garrett, who is doing an old army friend a favor by trying to find out who or what is killing his commanding officer, just misses several untimely ends and winds up wishing he hadn't even tried.
The friend is Sargeant Blake Peters, and the retired army officer is General Stantnor, who is gradually wasting away at his family estate in the country outside of TunFaire. Stantnor, his daughter, a cook, and his old marine staffers live in a style you might call dysfunctional gothic. The general has written a will that divides the estate among the surviving staff and someone is increasing their share by doing away with their buddies, one at a time. The General has some sort of wasting disease the leaves him cold and intermittently insane.
For all the spooks, spirits, and victims, the meat of this story is psychological, as one character or another play their part in an unfolding drama likely to leave you as chilled as the General. Everyone has their share of character defects. Morley tries to help but his best advice to the detective is "Get moving, Garrett." This story will tear you up a bit, but Cook does this with great style right through to the last page. By changing the pace he makes Old Tin Sorrows a book to remember.
Excellent 4th in Cook's Garrett Series.......2005-11-03
This is the 4th in Cook's Garrett series ("Sweet Silver Blues," "Bitter Gold Hearts," "Cold Copper Tears," "Old Tin Sorrows," "Dread Brass Shadows," "Red Iron Nights," "Deadly Quicksilver Lies," "Petty Pewter Gods," "Faded Steel Heat," "Angry Lead Skies," and "Whispering Nickel Idols"). Yet another fine Garrett story from the great Glen Cook.......1998-09-11
Garrett does his finest gumshoe work in this tense, creepy and funny tome. Truely, this is the beginning of Garrett's true love for art. Glen Cook has always been my favorite storyteller, I am proud to share the same city with him and that McGuire guy.
A Classic Garrett Case defines the Man........1997-10-20
This is the book for anyone who has enjoyed any other of the Garrett novels. It is the second book in the sequence of events in Garrett's life. It explains the background of Elenor, the haunting painting that hangs above Garrett's desk. Fans of the Dead Man will be disappointed, as he makes but a brief appearence in this book. This is possibly Cook's best Murder mystery / Ghost story.

Research on Cancer and Regeneration and the effects of electro magnetic fields.......2007-07-31
1. "Most technological cures for cancer, for example, were found to be carcinogenic themselves"
2. From the beginning, life has been dependent on Earth's natural electromagnetic environment. Today this natural environment is submerged beneath a torrent of electromagnetic fields that have never before been present...In Cross Currents I will show how both the human body electric and the Earth's body electric have been damaged by this alteration; I will then explain what steps we must take to prevent the disaster that is fast approaching.
3. Hospitals were becoming dangerous places to enter; patients sometimes entered with minor illnesses and left with permanent disabilities resulting from complication after another. Some patients discovered the various disciplines of energy medicine, which appeared to have three outstanding things to offer. First, they would do no harm; second, they often seemed to do some good; and third, they were much less expensive than orthodox medicine.
4. The physicist, biologist, and physicians were absolutely certain that life forces simply did not exist, and that all living things were simply chemical machines. They knew that the living organism was simply a collection of structures, which work chemically and were integrated by means of central nervous system, with no involvement of electricity or magnetism.
5. Nature must have a mechanism of self-repair; otherwise, life would not have succeeded. Self-repair requires a closed-loop control system-that is, one in which a certain signal indicates injury and causes another signal to effect repair. As the repair proceeds, the injury signal diminishes, and when the repair is complete the signal stops.
6. Salamander limbs regenerate at the Neuroepidermal junction and negative electric current signals primitive cells in the blastema to redifferentiate and growth back the limb. As the blastema grows, the salamander current becomes highly negative and slowly returns to its original baseline.
7. In a number of experiments, I was able to show that the DC electric currents I was measuring from a variety of tissues, including nerve fibers, were actual semiconducting. As a result of interest stirred up by these experiments, many people began to make electrical measurements of other growth processes. All rapid growing tissues were found to be negative in polarity. Interestingly, cancers in animals or humans always showed the highest negativity.
8. The frog's red cells could be dedifferentiated by electricity, but only with vanishing small amounts (measured in the billionths of amperes). Electricity was clearly a stimulus to regeneration. Instructions to regenerate were retained by mammals. Therefore, the growth control system required for regeneration was present. For electricity to turn on the control system for regeneration the right amount of electricity and right polarity was required.
9. I proposed that the acupuncture pointes were just such booster amplifiers, spaced along the course of the meridian transmission lines. Metallic acupuncture needles inserted in or near such a point would produce sufficient electrical disturbance that the amplifier could not operate, and the pain would be blocked.
Input DC electrical signals carried the information that injury had occurred along the acupuncture medians to the brain, where parts of this group of signals reached consciousness and was perceived as pain. Output DC signals caused the cells and chemical mechanisms at the site of injury to produce repair.
11. In the 1880s, Dr Allison Apostoli treated cancers of the cervix and uterus with DC electricity by inserting a positive electrode into the tumor and passing between 100 to 250 milliamperes of current through the tumor to a large negative electrode on the abdomen producing electrolysis within the tumor. He reported prompt relief of pain and bleeding, and shrinkage of the tumors, but he reported no long-term results.
12. All rapidly growing tissues were found to be negative in polarity compared with the rest of the body. The highest negativity was found in malignant tumors. In 1977, Doctors Muriel Schaubel and Mutaz Habel used stainless steel needles inserted directly into the tumors. Doctors Schaubel and Habel used three leves of current: 3 milliamperes, ½ milliampre, and 960 millimicroamperes. With the 3 Ma current there was significant destruction of the tumor, with about twice as much at the positive as the negative location. At the ½ MA there was destruction of the tumor at the positive electrode. At the lowest level of current there was a reduction in the weight of the tumors with both the positive and negative electrodes. The conclusion was the tumor destruction was the result of local electrolysis at the needle electrode.
13. The local toxicity of electricity kills cancer cells, but the real hazard is stimulating other cancer growth with the use of electricity.
14. Dr Kenneth McLean claimed that rats inoculated with cancer survived if they were treated with extremely high strength DC magnetic fields.
15. Pulsed magnetic field treatment for bone nonunions also has been reported to slow the growth of animal tumors. Pulsed magnetic fields have a major effect on the stress-response system. Exposure of the whole animal for a short time causes a rapid stress response, with a marked increase in the activity of the immune system. For a time, the immune system has the upper hand and defeats an increased growth of the cancer. However, continuing the exposure beyond the short term results in a decline of the stress response and the immune system falls to below normal levels. Tumor-cell growth is then enhanced by both the drop in immune-system efficiency and the direction of the pulsed magnetic field on the cancer cells themselves.
16. Dr Becker discovered that some human cancer cells in a culture appeared to dedifferentiate when exposed to electrically generated silver ions. An electrical-charge transfer sends a signal to the nucleus of the cancer cell that activates the primitive type genes, and the cell dedifferentiates.
Everyone should read this book!.......2006-08-30
If you really want to understand how the body works and is being influenced by our environment you must read this book. What an eye-opener. The author is someone thinking ahead of his time and much of what he predicted has come true.
An exceptional book by a doctor ahead of his time.......2006-06-19
Dr. Becker is a brilliant medical researcher who has devoted his life to the study of something most doctors barely understand that it exists: the body's electrical system.
Among many other topics, Dr. Becker describes
- the body's inbuilt electrical systems,
- how he was able to use electrical current to get bones that would otherwise not have grown together to do so,
- how he offered to create a means of inducing anesthesia with electrical currents, but was politely turned down by lesser doctors,
- how one can measure electrical currents flowing at acupuncture points (in other words, why there must be something to acupuncture),
- why he thinks there may be something to homeopathy,
- to what extent electrical systems play a role in the salamander's ability to regenerate tissue,
- the harm that (everyday) electromagnetic fields can cause.
The tragedy of Dr. Becker is that he is so far ahead of his time that he is largely overlooked. All the same he sometimes paints with a little too broad a brush. All the same, I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in the life sciences.
Electromedicine: Putting it on a scientific footing.......2006-04-05
Dr Robert O Becker is an orthopaedic surgeon who researched cell/limb regeneration and ended up as an expert on the effects of electricity on the body. His work puts a sound scientific basis to the area of electric fields. He quotes dozens of studies which are "sensitive" and brings together various disparate sources into a coherent whole.
This book precedes his meeting with Dr Robert Beck (who expanded the application and understanding of electro-medicine) and expands on his previous book (The body electric). As I know that Dr Beck got a lot out of his meetings with Dr Becker... I've been hoping Dr Becker likewise benefitted from the relationship... and would write a follow up.
A surprising book. Covering topics you don't expect to find mentioned. A book with credibility. A book full of useful facts. A book that advances our knowledge of electronic hazards significantly.
Well done... please write another one!
Thought provoking.......2003-03-20
This book, by a prominent medical researcher and practitioner, is one of the most well written and interesting of it's type. In fact, I was unable to put it down once I started reading. Initially interested in possible hazards of electropollution, and also medical uses of electric current, I learned quite a bit from Dr. Becker's book; and I found myself asking more questions, and looking for other sources. Written for the layman, this book is authoritatively referenced with all the professionalism you would expect from a man of the author's caliber. Highly recommended!

Great combinations of ideas!.......2000-05-11
Shea has taken the concept of pizza a few steps farther than any other cookbook I've seen. His bean-topped pizzas are incredibly tasty and hearty - definitely not for the faint-hearted! Easy to use and very varied styles.
VERY VERY HELPFUL!.......1999-12-12
I am looking to expand the basic menu items at our restaurant and found this book to be very very helpful. I reviewed quite a few other books at the library and none really had what I was looking for. This book has proven to be easy to use whether you're cooking for yourself, a family of five, or up to as many as 400 people a day. It offers a variety of ways to serve the same dish, yet appear different, while still being able to give it your own personal touch, whether you are trying to work with a picky eater child or that impossible to please customer. Bon Appetite!

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2007-09-09
This book tells you everything you need to know for the novice to the experienced. Suggestions for those who want ornamental animals to the getting down to farming people. Pictures are great. Highly suggest this book!
great book!.......2007-08-10
This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.
Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08
This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above. A must buy...
Best farm book yet.......2007-07-19
Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.
it is what the title says!.......2007-07-05
if you've just moved somewhere with a little land and are thinking of adding a few farm-type animals to your yard, this is a great book. It will tell you the demands that each of these little furry/fluffy/downy creatures will make on you, your property, and your bank account! The author gives a great overview of each of the animals mentioned in the title. BUT once you actually purchase the critters, you'll probably need a book that gives more in-depth information, especially in the health area. A great book to help you make educated decisions about what to toss in your ark!!

Customer Reviews:
Great goat info.......2007-07-23
I purchased this for my dad who is a new goat owner. He has read it from cover to cover and uses it as a reference for certain problems he occasionally encounters.
Good reference for anyone new to owning goats!
Good basic information.......2007-06-08
I enjoyed this book very much even though I am not a kid. I am a new goat owner and this book makes all the information very plain. It was a very good first read. It is not very in depth and I am reading other books to add to my knowledge, but it is a very good starting place.
Very good for starting with goats..............2007-02-08
This is a short book but they make the best out of a small package. It gives you most of the info you need. I wish they would have spent more time on Goat breeds and on Meat and Dairy operations but it was mostly aimed at kids.
good information.......2006-11-04
I really liked this book. I am not a kid but I have no doubt that a kid would have been able to understand it (no pun intended) I wish there was more information on Pygmie Goats
Your Goats.......2006-02-12
I live on a farm and have almost every one of Gail Damerow's books. They are great for beginners, as I was, and for anyone simply looking for information on farm animals. This book in particular helped me with my goats.

Product Description
The timeless lessons of Old World fables and fairy tales are blended with contemporary twists and humor for todays children in the audiobook collections of My Sisters Stories. Stripped of the unnecessary violence and cumbersome language of the original versions, the stories promote such traits as loyalty, perseverance, teamwork, self-acceptance, and honesty. In Billy Goats Gruff, the troll decides in the end to peacefully co-exist with the goats and take up fishing. In Chicken Little, the friends learn that everyone can have a different understanding of the same event. The unscrupulous tailors in The Emperors New Clothes get their comeuppance when the Emperor realizes the pitfalls of his vanity, and the big, bad wolf in The Three Little Pigs is outsmarted only when the trio of brothers realize they need to work together.
The project is a partnership between Claire Michel of Jacksonville, Florida, and her sister, Ann Weber of Toledo, Ohio. Claire narrates the stories and gives life to the delightful characters in the adaptations that she and Ann wrote individually or in collaboration. The two sisters have four sons, two daughters-in-law, and one grandson.
We believe in giving back to our community. A portion of each sale is donated to Hubbard House, a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and their children providing shelter and support services. If you would like additional information about the outstanding work that Hubbard House does, please go their website at www.HubbardHouse.org.
We hope these stories give you and the children in your life many hours of enjoyment. We welcome your comments and suggestions at Comments@MySistersStories.com.
Volume 3 includes Three Billy Goats Gruff, Chicken Little, and Follow Your Heart. Follow Your Heart is a narrative that does not utilize character voices, and is recorded in three parts to provide easy stopping points in the story.

Book Description
The second volume of Arabic Literature of Africa (of which six volumes are planned) deals with the literature of Central Sudanic Africa i.e. the area lying between the present Republic of the Sudan and Mali. The bulk of the work concerns Nigeria, which has produced a voluminous and varied Arabic-Islamic literature. The smaller and less studied Arabic literature traditions of Chad, Cameroun and Niger are also examined, but in less depth. The work is arranged both chronologically and by sub-region, and writers have been grouped within chapters according to their scholarly and religious affiliations. Full details are given of known manuscripts, published editions and translations. There are indexes of titles, authors, first lines of poetry and a general index. An initial overview and chapter introductions provide an outline intellectual history.
Book Description
Eric Gill is perhaps the greatest English artist-craftsman of the twentieth century. His most celebrated achievements were sculptures in stone and wood ("Prospero and Ariel" on Broadcasting House; the "Stations of the Cross" in Westminster Cathedral). Malcolm Yorke reassesses this cranky, eccentric but vulnerable and modest man and illustrates his life and work with over 100 examples of Gill's engravings, sculptures and erotic drawings.
Customer Reviews:
An exhaustive survey of an exhausting artist.......2001-10-23
Although one doesn't necessarily get to know Eric Gill the individual any better through this book, Malcolm Yorke does an admirable job presenting the man through his works. I was anticipating more of a biography than a survey-cum-biography, but the format works well to distill the broad (and usually overlapping) scope of Gill's artwork and personality into something approaching manageablity. While I concur that it makes the most sense to start, as Yorke does, with Gill's writing, I found this section to be the most tedious. However one musn't fault Yorke for this, as indeed this can be generally attributed to Gill's own rather byzantine writing style. The following chapters (including many fine examples of Gill's broad talents) make the slow start well worthwhile.
In sum, if one has any interest in learning more about one of the 20th century's most fascinating artists, Malcom Yorke's "Eric Gill: Man of Flesh and Spirit" is about as comprehensive an account as one can get. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Paradise to Prison is a commentary, textbook and complete study guide to the book of Genesis. In very readable fashion the author explores the lives of the patriarchs as well as important doctrinal themes. Each chapter is carefully documented and sources from archaeology and ancient Near Eastern history are freely used. The writer's premise is that no other ancient literature surviving the ravages of time can rightly be compared to Genesis with its unsurpassed theological perspectives and vivid profiles of early man.

Corregidor: From Paradise To Hell.......2007-09-23
I am lucky enough to have met Ben Waldron through family members that know him. I am not related to him in any way, but after reading this book, I feel that I know him better than some of my own family. This is a gripping true story of Ben's life, narrated by Ben, of leaving his family at 18 years old during the depression and joining the Army. Ben kept a diary for the three and a half years that he was kept as Prisoner of War under the Japanese. This book will take you through all of your emotions, and you will be left awestruck, bewildered, angry, sickened, happy and well informed about life as a soldier and as a POW during WWII.
Corregidor From paradise to hell.......2007-04-02
Excellent book. I read it in one sitting because it was impossible for me to set it down. The author tells the story in real language with no extra words. It really shows the horrors of being a prisoner of war.

As a fan of historical fiction, I was greatly pleased to come across this book of historical...history? *grin* This autobiography is well written and compelling. Having lived in Indonesia for a number of years (and having visited Bali), I found it really fascinating. I think anyone would enjoy it, though. It's a great way to familiarize yourself with world history.

Book Description
While Rosie the Riveter and millions of American women fought World War II on the home front, other women witnessed the war firsthand. Many of them were overtaken by Japan's military offensive in the South Pacific and subsequently held captive. Theresa Kaminski chronicles their harrowing experiences in this moving testament of women in wartime.
Although most of us are familiar with accounts of POWs, few realize that the Japanese imprisoned thousands of American civilian women in the Philippines during World War II. They were businessmen's wives and career girls, missionaries and teachers, nurses and mothers-and some were even spies. Many had grown accustomed to the good life in a colonial society, but after the Japanese invaded they had to learn to fend for themselves. Prisoners in Paradise is the most complete look at the experiences of these heroic women.
Theresa Kaminski takes readers inside the internment camps to show how these women coped and how the experience changed them. Some took on leadership roles for the first time in their lives, while many found themselves doing work they had previously left to servants. They learned to stretch both the boundaries of acceptable behavior for women and the norms of motherhood as they struggled to meet the challenge of captivity. They fought to keep their families together, adjusting to changes in work habits and private lives under the watchful eye of their Japanese captors. They also kept up their morale by diverting themselves with fashion--however impromptu it might have been.
While most civilian women were interned, others fled into the hills or adopted new identities to avoid captivity, relying on neighbors and former servants for survival. Kaminski shares their stories as well, such as that of an intelligence agent who escaped the Japanese to fight with--and serve as mother to--a band of Filipino guerrillas, and a spy known as "High Pockets" who got her nickname by smuggling documents in her brassiere.
Prisoners in Paradise is the product of exceptionally wide-ranging research, drawing on interviews, letters, and diaries of internees. It shows how women under duress negotiated issues of gender and national identity in their struggle to survive, bolstered by their belief in what it meant to be an American woman. By sharing these little-known stories of perseverance and survival, Kaminski draws new profiles of courage that can inspire us half a century later.
Customer Reviews:
Women in Japanese prison camps .......2005-06-25
Fourteen thousand civilian Americans spent the years of World War II as "guests" of their Japanese conquerors. The author tells the story of more than a dozen American women who were interned by the Japanese or took to the hills to escape being captives. Most of the Americans were residents of the Philippines, but one was interned in Borneo, another on Celebes and a third in Hong Kong.
The best known of the internees, Agnes Newton Keith, was a well known author before the war and wrote a chilling account, "Three Came Home," of her three years in captivity. Several of the other women also published their stories or were interviewed by the author.
I can't think of anything more frightening than to be stranded with your children ten thousand miles from home in wartime and being totally at the mercy of a cruel enemy. Fortunately, the Japanese, for all their savagery in China, did not usually physically abuse the Caucasian women. However, hunger, isolation, and the fear of the unknown were potent factors. Perhaps the most amazing part of this story is how well and effectively the women coped with their fate.
There is a bit too much of academia in the narrative. The drama of the lives of the captives -- or those who evaded captivity -- could have been better exploited. The thematic approach taken by the author involved much skipping around from woman to woman and made it difficult to become familiar with them individually. But, the story is good and interesting, the research impeccable, and the book well worth reading by World War II buffs, feminists, and people interested in the impact of extreme stress on human beings.
Smallchief
Not another book about the horrors of war but..........2002-07-06
...one of hope and survival. The women come to life as their story is told of how they went from a life of leisure with servants to do the work for them to doing everything by themselves with little help from their men. Ms Kaminsky does an excellent job telling these women's story and her book is a great addition to my bookshelves.
Thought-provoking and page-turning.......2002-02-07
What does it take to survive? What does it cost? This brilliant, fearless, absolutely page-turning book examines the plight of American women caught in the camps. The women in this book burst alive on the page with stories you just can't forget. Just beautifully written! Can't wait to read more from the very talented Kaminski.
What makes a woman a "good" woman?.......2000-05-09
A good book informs and entertains. A great book informs, entertains and forces us to ask questions. Kaminski's book cannot be read without introspection. As she details a horrifying scenario, military detention of women and children on foreign soil, and delves into how that situation affected women's roles, the reader is compelled to ask, "What if this happened to me?"
Is it better to keep one's head held high or better to feed your child? Is it better to uphold the vestiges of social class and civilization or is it better to put a roof over your children's heads? Over and over, Kaminski forces the reader to wonder, "What would I do in a similar situation?"
Kaminiski's depth of research and understanding of the topic shines on every page. These heroic women, until now so disregarded by history, owe her a great debt.
For any person who marvels at the power of roles to dictate worthiness, this book is a must read. I wish we'd had this book when I attended women's studies classes. Thank you, Dr. Kaminski, for bringing this unknown part of history to light.
