P.T. Deutermann's latest is a topnotch topical thriller bursting with the expected expertise and insider knowledge he picked up as a Navy captain and arms control specialist. It's also something else: an unexpectedly resonant portrait of people, good and bad, who have been chewed up and spit out by military bureaucracies. Both the hero (an unlucky military investigator named David Stafford, whose career has been short-circuited by whistle-blowing and whose personal life is a disaster area) and the heavy (a career Army bean counter and petty thief, Wendell Carson, who suddenly gets the chance to move up and almost blows it at every occasion) are carefully drawn and fully credible. So are the underlings, officers and FBI agents who thread through their lives. This becomes especially important when Stafford--trying to track down a container of deadly biological nerve gas that Carson has stolen from an Army base in Georgia--crosses paths with a young girl who seems to have psychic powers. In less skilled hands, this kind of rogue element could send a vehicle skittering. But Deutermann quickly gives the girl and her keepers (a mysteriously intriguing woman teacher, a protective small-town policeman) such a strong presence that they become vital to the story's exciting and moving conclusion. Other of his excellent thrillers available in paperback include The Edge of Honor, Official Privilege, Scorpion in the Sea, and Sweepers. --Dick Adler
Book Description
They call it "Wet Eye": a biological weapon that literally eats out the eyes of its victims. Now, deep within the belly of the U.S. military establishment, one small silver canister of Wet Eye is missing-lost because a career pencil-pusher has cut a million-dollar deal and signed it in blood. For David Stafford, a Defense Department investigator, finding the missing canister means ripping through layers of cover-ups, bureaucracy, and one man's murderous determination to sell Wet Eye to an international arms dealer. But the military would rather silence Stafford than admit to a security breach. And now, the only person who can stop a biological conflagration is an innocent child-who has looked into the face of evil, and seen it with her own two eyes....

Wham Zam Thriller Kadiller.......2005-06-28
David Stafford is a disgraced government bureaucrat, recently consigned to Siberia (Atlanta). Wendell Carson is a government bureacrat in good standing, but definitely on the take. His latest scheme involves a cylinder of the deadly "Wet Eye"--weapon of mass destruction beyond your wildest dreams--which he has acquired and is somehow planning to sell. The girl in the airport is mute but communicates in sign language and--get this--she is psychic, especially around bad guys. Throw these characters together and you have the makings of Zero Option, an improbable but gripping thriller.
So, will Carson really sell the cylinder for 1 million dollars? Will Stafford rehabilitate himself? Will the government do what is right or just try to cover up the loss of the cylinder? What do you think? Is this America? But, you will just have to read the book to find out for sure.
Is it perfect? Not quite. There are a few too many characters, especially in the beginning, and a few too many acronyms for government agencies and programs. Does it matter? No. Start reading and you quickly figure things out. This is a book that, as they say, you can't put down. Author Deutermann knows how to hold your attention, and he has worked with these guys, so he knows what he's talking about. Recommendation: get the book and start reading. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
Quite Chilling.......2002-06-02
Very descriptive of the Monster and its workings. Could have been a little overly stated. As the story progressed my interest perked and suddenly it turned into a full fledged rampant read.
The chenical weapons of the world could reek more havoc than any army in history has. The sad fact is most countrys have a great array of these killers and the ability to produce many more. Let us hope that this fiction never turns into fact for the sake of humanity. The last fifty pages will surely give a cold feeling up your spine.
bad start.......2000-02-13
I've never been able to "get into" mysteries that _tell you who the criminal is and how he does his deed_ in the opening pages.
Could be a story right out of today's headlines........1999-12-30
This is my first P.T. Deutermann novel. It started out a little bit slow but was rich in background. By the time I reached the back cover I felt I knew my way around a DRMO. The story line is believable, current and frightening. By the end this book was moving like an inbound rocket. I definitely recommend it and will be looking for other Deutermann titles.
A somehwat believable story of military conspiracy.......1999-07-24
My first time reading Deutermann. Believeable plot ruined by an introduction of a "rogue" element. A quick read.

A Wide Range of Fantasy Classics.......2000-09-05
Pringle's selection of 100 fantasy novels covers a wide variety of styles. He covers just about all the bases from Tolkien to Stephen King to authors who are also well-known science fiction writers. You may not agree with Pringle's choices, they are so varied. I found myself in disagreement in few areas, but I must say that I was shocked to read that Pringle believes that Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is "an unearned epic." I also felt that Pringle tends to have a British bias, omitting several American authors and works. All in all, a good resource for expanding your fantasy reading.

Whether you've been injured or want to avoid injury, the American Physical Therapy Association Book of Body Repair and Maintenance can help you. Part 1 is the first place to go if you've been hurt. It presents nine common injury sites--back, neck, jaw, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee, and ankle and foot--describing the anatomy and function of that area of the body, what can go wrong, and what to do if you experience pain or injury there. Part 2 explains how to avoid injury through proper posture, gait, body mechanics (how we use our bodies in daily activities), body weight, and footwear. You also get a program of beginning strength training and stretching, plus tips for avoiding injuries in sports, exercise activities, and in the workplace. Part 3 presents 200 clearly illustrated exercises for strength (beginning level) and flexibility that can be done at home. Some require dumbbells or ankle weights; most need no equipment. Many are done seated or lying down, so even if you haven't fully recovered, you can start to rehabilitate those areas that are ready. The illustrations are line drawings, large enough so that you can learn the exercises easily with the book open on the floor. This book is practical and helpful--don't wait until you get hurt to read it. --Joan Price

Each exercise in the book has been prepared and reviewed by a special editorial board, chaired by Dr. Marilyn Moffat, president emeritus of the APTA, and widely considered to be the preeminent expert in the field.Broken down into three major sections, the book first offers illustrated descriptions of the structure and mechanics of each major body part, explaining what can go wrong and how to properly care for that area. A middle section provides general information on posture, body mechanics, weight control, aerobic conditioning, and maintenance programs. Each chapter references the main part of the book, the catalog of exercises.

Body repair manual........2007-06-02
This is a good basic book and a good place to start if you have any kind of musculoskeletal problems. The book is organized by body part (for example, the ankle, the elbow) and tells you how the area works, what can go wrong with it, and how to take care of it. The book ends with lots of exercises for each body part, which are clearly illustrated. A good first place to start if you have nagging problems you'd like to get rid of, I think most readers will get a lot out of it. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for more specifics on exercise for shoulder pain or a torn cuff.
recommended.......2007-06-02
I like this book because it is recommended by Tufts University, so I know that I can trust the information.
A Must Have For People In Pain or Those Working With People In Pain.......2007-05-20
I love this book. The pictures are nice and clear on what you are suppose to do for each exercise. Everything is so easy to understand. I took the book with me to Physical Therapy one day and my Physical Therapist liked it so much he ordered one that same day!!!
Great stretches - repetitive chapters.......2007-02-15
This book is great for anyone looking for comprehensive stretches for all muscle groups (including the jaw). However, the substantive chapters are quite repetitive and after the first chapter or so, do not offer much new information. Nevertheless, I purchased the book because I really wanted a dictionary of stretches and this provided me with exactly what I was looking for. Also, the stretches are very specific, requiring straight-backed chairs, foot stools, etc. I do most stretches without the specifics recommended in the book and still find that they work quite well.
A well-organizied book .......2006-12-23
I was looking for information on a shoulder injury and what to do for it. When looking through the chapter on the shoulder it did help by listing all the things that could go wrong with your shoulder in bold print so you could skim to find the correct one, then told me what I wanted to know to help my injury. The next section was on taking care of your shoulder before anything goes wrong. I prefer this well-organizied book on therapy. And Vickery presents the information best. Symptoms, Causes, What you can do, What the doctor can do, etc.

Like an Old Friend.......2000-04-13
I have had a copy of "Mrs. Restino's Country Kitchen" since it was published in 1976. Its cover is now tattered and creased, quite a few of the pages are stuck together with unidentifiable food particles, and not long ago I finally had to repair the collapsing spine with tape -- that's how much I've used this book in the last 24 years. Ironically, I was never a back-to-nature person, a vegetarian, or a hippie -- I simply appreciated this book for its intelligent, clear-eyed approach to food and cooking. Over the years I grew to depend on it whenever I needed an idea for preparing an unfamiliar vegetable, or if I happened to have odds and ends lying around and didn't quite know what to do with them. Recently I've been using it more than ever, since my significant other is a botanist and a fine gardener, and I've discovered a little of the excitement of growing fresh vegetables, albeit in a tiny urban garden. In short, I would recommend this book to anybody, rural or urban, carnivore or vegetarian, hippie or yuppie -- Restino's writing style is straightforward, unsentimental, charming, full of character, and clearly comprehensible. You don't have to cook on a wood stove to be infected by her honesty, her clarity, or her very understandable desire to know for a certainty where one's food comes from. As a footnote -- this book, and the distinct picture it provides of its author, affected me personally, to the point where I have sometimes found myself wondering what might have happened to Susan Restino -- did she survive the turbulent '70s, did she stay in the country, how did her own life turn out. I'm glad to see she is still active, and that this wonderful book seems to be forthcoming in a new edition. It richly deserves a multi-generational following.

My husband and I love this book. From the Clam Chowder to "How to Freeze green beans". This is a must have in any kitchen. Very informative.
Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
Let the experts help you decide what is right for you and your horse with this interview-based comparison of natural, conventional and classical training methods.
Sometimes the equestrian world can be very contradictary and confusing, especially to new horse owners. This side-by-side comparison offers down-to-earth discussion about all of the main training methods, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions.
Many of the chapters have been compiled from face-to-face interviews with the trainers themselves - in fact Monty Roberts, the grandfather of natural horse training methods gives an extremely in-depth and fascinating account of his methods.
Customer Reviews:
Biased author, poor explanations, not worth the money........2007-04-13
I'm glad I got this at Half-Price books and not at full price and that I was already farmiliar with most of the trainers' methods. The author is very biased, meaning she accepts Classical training methods and whoever agrees with her. Natural horsemanship is not acceptable in her eyes. She is also very hypocritical. It is okay if GaWaNi Ponyboy or Monty Roberts says something, but not if Pat Parelli or Richard Maxwell says the same thing. Maybe it is due to the fact that Ponyboy is a Native American and disagreeing with his ancestors' methods would be politically incorrect and becuase Roberts is held in high regard by Her Majesty, The Queen Mother (the author is English).
If you really want to explore the top horse training methods read Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship, The Man Who Listens to Horses, Horse, Follow Closely, The Classical Seat, The Tellington TTouch : A Revolutionary Natural Method to Train and Care for Your Favorite Animal, or any of the other books by the trainers mentioned in Wilson's book.
In the beginning of the book Ms. Wilson states that new horse owners should let "The Experts" help them choose what training method to go with and continues on to fill the book with her opinions. I do not know what she based her assessment of herself on, but based on some of the things she said she seems to be no expert. She said something about foals following their mothers and not pushing on them. Foals follow their mothers for a few days but soon start pushing them around and leaving them. The mothers follow their foals and do not discipline them except at weaning time.
Not a comparison of methods..only author's judgements.......2006-07-03
The author obviously has set opinions about the training of horses. Rather than allow the other methods be explained individually the author interjects comparisons and critiques based only on her experiences. This is not an honest explanation of the varying schools of thought about horse training. This is the author's grandstand. If you are already all about very classical horsemanship then this book will support your current methods.
Top Horse Training Methods.......2006-01-30
Well prepared comparison of each trainer's methods/perspectives answering questions on the essentials of the horse-person relationship! Balanced. The book reveals a consistency in the fundamental interests for the horse's well-being, which is encouraging. Recommended as a catalyst to further explore & reflect upon our ways of communicating with our horses.
An interesting approach to a complex subject. . . .......2005-11-16
I have read and re-read this book, and have learned a lot from it. Ms. Wilson doesn't set out to teach you to train a horse, but rather looks at the training methods of top trainers comparatively. Reading about where she finds lapses in logic in training philosophies, has helped me to better apply training tips selectively.
If you are serious about horse-training, and working with a variety of horses, this book is very useful.
Not Helpful At All.......2004-10-11
I was thoroughly disappointed with this book. The preface describes this book as a book that gives you detailed descriptions of training methods so you can work with your horse. When in fact all it does is critique the training methods without actually telling you what the training methods are. I felt completely let down and wasted my money. I'm halfway through and I haven't even finished reading it and I'm making myself read on to PRAY there there is SOMETHING in this book worth reading. If you're considering getting this book - DON'T! You'd be much better off looking at who the top trainers are and purchasing THEIR books instead of this.
Book Description
Increasingly prized by collectors worldwide, Oaxacan woodcarvings are among the most popular form of folk art available today. These fanciful, brightly colored figures created by rural Mexican woodcarvers reflect the myths and traditions still very much a part of the carvers' daily lives. A spectacular gallery of over 160 full-color photographs beautifully portrays these artisans and their work, while an informative text examines the intricacies of the carvers' craft. The only volume devoted exclusively to this distinctive and magical art form, Oaxacan Woodcarving will inspire and inform anyone with an interest in folk art, photography, or anthropology.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing, Insightful, Fascinating........2007-09-28
...I bought this book in a discount house on a whim. It has turned out to be one of the most worn books in my library. This is NOT an encyclopedia of Oaxacan woodcarvings, or a catalogue of such, which may have been to the disappointment of one of the reviewers. The writer does an OUTSTANDING job at studying this group of people and their craft/artform as an anthropological survey, that is not in the least bit dry. Great stories, and imaginative professional photography of numerous pieces. This is the book, that caused me to travel 2,000 miles and spend thousands of dollars to meet the people that the author writes about....and that is the only caveat I have towards this book; it will introduce you to a culture steeped in poignancy, depth and every bit as 'magical' as its' title suggests. 5 stars. No, 10 stars.
Take this book to Oaxaca!.......2006-08-09
My copy of Oaxacan Woodcarving: The Magic in the Trees arrived just before my husband and I left the U.S. for a 3-month RV tour through several states of Mexico. Much of our 4 weeks in Oaxaca were spent in small villages enjoying the colorful works and the artisans who created them. We saw a wide variety of styles and themes, many of which are represented in this book. What gorgeous colors and what a sense of humor!
Oaxacan Woodcarving.......2002-11-09
This a beautiful and colorful book about Oaxacan Woodcarvings. It illustrates their vivid history and humble beginnings by folk-artisans in Mexico.
Latin American crafts are special because they're created by people who have a passion for life. They express it in their art with vibrant colors and whimsical expressions.
I sincerely appreciate the work that goes into creating these figures. This book captures all of the above and more.
Not just a picture book, but a book about people..........2002-06-10
I picked this book up just recently and was rather delighted by what I found. Vicki Ragan's photos are lovely, but it is Shepard Barbash's text that is the real delight here. How many of those who buy this book will be like the lady below who, apparently without reading the text, complains that the book does not feature all her favorite artists and all the little alien figures which she is sure are the most important images coming out of Oaxaca?
Please do buy this book, enjoy the lovely pictures, but then read the text. Barbash raises, rather subtlely, the question of whether these woodcarvings are folk art or a response to a commercial demand; he questions whether we are right to put our own "surrealist" readings on these wonderful little figures which are hardly conceived out of some sort of pychological dream matter.
Instead he puts this work into its proper context. These wonderful, brightly colored woodcarvings are the work of individuals with their own stories, hopes and fears -- for whom the incomprehensible wealth and technology of the United States is far more surreal than anything they might produce.
I have one of the cute little aliens the reader below speaks of. They are nice, but superficial beside the personal stories and personal expression that occasionally finds its way into this fascinating art that exists somewhere between folk and commerce.
Informative but disappointing........2000-10-19
This book is very informative for those interested in learning more about the artists behind the woodcarvings. However it only represents a few of the carvers and the photos while excellent quality will be a disappointment to those who may own or have seen many of the other wonderful carvings that these artists create. The photos seem to concentrate mainly on human style figures and although it does contain quite a few photos of animal figures most are those more on the conventional side. The more elaborate and colorful figures are not represented, neither are some of the more exotic animals like dragons, giraffes, and armadillos. There is nothing at all on the small `alien' monsters which are now considered the trademark emblems of this area. For those wanting a book to show friends just what these artists can do it will be a bit of a disappointment, however since it's the only book available at present there is little choice.

Book Description
The Latitudinarians, a group of prominent clergymen in the late seventeenth-century Church of England, were articulate opponents of Anglicanism's intellectual foes. Against the challenges of Hobbism, Spinozism, Deism, scepticism, and Roman Catholicism, they presented a body of thought emphasizing reason in religion and practical morality over credal speculation. Their theology was designed to combat `practical atheism' and their sermons stressed that the chief design of Christianity was `to make men good.' They advocated an alliance of religion and science, and were early participants in the Royal Society. In preaching, they developed a simpler sermon style influential for English prose. As an important part of the Anglican Church at the time of the Glorious Revolution, they helped in drafting the Revolution Settlement, the seedbed, in Macaulay's words, of subsequent personal liberties. This definition and analysis of Latitudinarianism was completed by the late Martin Griffin in 1962 and has been updated since his death in 1988 by Professor Richard H. Popkin.
Book Description
In the twenty-first century, the widespread integration of computer technologies has brought text-based information into many facets of everyday life. This has caused an ever-growing interest in typography across many fields of visual communication, where text and letterform play a central role in disseminating social trends and reflecting the spirit of the times.
Arabic Typography takes the reader through a comprehensive study of Arabic letterforms, starting with a concise historical overview of their development and styles, and proceeding to the latest design and technological advances. It attempts to establish the foundations for Arabic type-design by drawing lessons from past practices and aesthetic conventions, in order to retain the enduring traits that are of relevance for improvement and innovation in future type-design creations.
Going beyond the historical facts to discuss current design issues pertaining to the creation and production of letterforms, it presents Arabic typographic design as an essential communication tool that should marry functionality and legibility to aesthetic delight.
This book will serve as a valuable reference on Arabic typography, and as an educational guide for design students, professionals and anyone who uses Arabic type and enjoys the visual appearance of this language and its letterforms.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent first on the subject.......2002-06-10
Not only does this book provide an excellent overview of the history of Arabic script and printing, but it also lays out a vision and guidelines for the development of contemporary Arabic fonts. The book also focuses on the history and state of Arabic printing (as opposed to Arabic calligraphy), and highlights the technical challenges that arose from the adoption of what essentially is a calligraphic script to mechanical (or digital) printing processes.
The book ends with a selection of type designs by contemporary Arab type designers, which gives the reader a feel of what is happening out there in this field.
I recommend this (beatifully designed) book to anyone who deals with Arabic publishing, design or type design.
