Set in a locale and a culture as rich and satisfying as good Southern cooking, Virginia Lanier's A Brace of Bloodhounds continues the adventures of JoBeth Sidden. JoBeth's a feisty Southern gal with an attitude, whose devotion to her highly trained and trusted bloodhounds involves her in kidnapping, corruption, drug smuggling, and every ornery law-enforcement puzzle that comes to light in her South Georgia town on the edge of the Okeefenokee Swamp. Lanier's adrenalin-pumping narratives, which began with The House on Bloodhound Lane and continued in Death in Bloodhound Red and Blind Bloodhound Justice, are told by JoBeth, who is alternately pulled and pushed by her loves: her extended family of friends and trainers, and her wonderful and appealing bloodhounds. In this volume, JoBeth seeks answers to a petition from beyond the grave, unearths a child molester, and faces a renegade alligator who threatens her pups. Along the way, we learn the rich details of mantrailing, Southern hospitality, modern moonshining, and--of course--romance. Those who have already made the acquaintance of Lanier's appealing family of characters will enjoy this installment. Newcomers will be thrilled that there are other books in the series. Pour a glass of fresh-made iced tea, kick back, and travel into the heart of this colorful and intriguing world. --Barbara SchlieperBook Description
Hard-boiled Georgia peach Jo Beth Siddon has a nose for trouble that rivals even the olfactory prowess of her beloved bloodhounds. This latest caper has her trying to dig up the dirt on what may be an insidious crime ring's marijuana field. The problem is, one of her friends has unwittingly become involved in their shady dealings, and it's up to Jo Beth to help her out of the mess. As if all this isn't enough, Bubba, Jo Beth's violent ex, is hounding her again, and Jo Beth knows that if he catches her, there will be hell to pay.Wading knee-deep through this quagmire of danger and deceit, Jo Beth knows that her only hope lies not with the snub-nosed .32 revolver in her hand, but with the droopy-eared, drooling hounds at her feet. Man's best friend is working for a woman now, and with the bloodhounds on the hunt, it's a frantic chase at breakneck speed down a convoluted trail of clues that takes readers through the steaming swamps of the Okefenokee and holds them spellbound until the final bone-chilling finish.

It took the first two books to teach me to REALLY not start them on a work night because no matter how hard I try I am NOT going to sleep until its done and it's hard to debug unix on four hours sleep. This time I managed to wait till friday night to read it, and did i mention these are a healthy sized book, the kind a serious reader who reads very fast needs. A thin or medium sized book I can read in a couple hours and is more like an appetizer to me, and you'll see me always score short story collections as 4 or less because there just isnt time to do a 5 story in one. While not a thick as 'Dune', all her books are a serious read and very satisfying to the mature bookaholic with a substantial habit going. Speaking of addiction, this is not the first but one of the cream of crop of books that makes me sigh that I can only read a few thousand words an hour , I scored six hundred with 100% retention in high school, 30 years ago and am several orders of magnitude faster now though I don't know exactly HOW fast. This kind of book makes you regret you cant IV it directly into your veins!
The reason I call this a 'friday night only' book is that she achieves the kind of realism where the idea of having to get up in three hours for ten or twelves hours of work, even vigourous brainwork, is a vague and unimportant concept once you start reading. Virginnia Lanier's books are filled with such a wealth of information and such an interweaving of the elements that after reading 1, then 1 again, then a pause before I found 2, and read 1 and 2, then 2 again, that it was only a few weeks before I found 3, and then read 1, 2 and 3! And im VERY ADHD so I get bored easily, but not with these books. Like only a few authors Virginnia Lanier manages to hold onto several themes at the same time (like life) and weave them in together so well that anytime you hit a low point at one you hit a high point elsewhere and the book never lets you go without being artificially extravagent, which never works for me. The story has to hold together well for things to happen within the realm of possibility of the definition of the characters and the environment and these stories definitely do that.
The main theme of this book is a murder. But what makes this a different murder mystery? One reoccurring theme that comes up is here is a mystery that has clear warning signs come up that a SMART woman would back off. However while Jo Beth is smart, she is both stubborn and ruthless in her way. There is just a point where she don't give a rat's behind and goes on anyway cause it's RIGHT, which is why I **LIKE*** the character. And no matter how compelling the story is otherwise I can't stand reading a story about someone I can't stand. Well, unless they are in a serious hailstorm of.. you know. But even then they can't be the main character or I just won't want to bother reading it. I know enough of THEM in real life.
So anyway, this book the main theme is a murder, but there are many others and skillfully woven in. Like life, nothing else waits while you work on your biggest priority. The lightning just keeps coming. And sometimes Jo Beth has to bail her boat pretty hard in the rain, which makes me like her and the series MORE. I've had to do some serious bailing myself, more often then not in fact I've been bailing out more then one leak and so does Jo Beth. I like Jo Beth because she has made herself a sucess AGAINST all odds, not because things just worked out her way easy. Also because she is smartmouthed ... tough broad that is willing to take the consequences of speaking her piece, even if they can be fairly serious.
Of course by the strict definition of success a lot of people would not think she is a sucess, she works dang hard, long hours and doesnt have fast cars or serious jewelry (funny, like me). She does have a house (at the edge of a swamp) but then she did have an inheritance I didn't.

Customer Reviews:
This is really a lovely cookbook - "basics" of gourmet Chinese cooking were well explained. However, as a busy mother with 6 young children, I never found the time to do the shopping and create any of these wonderful-looking recipes.
It was a pleasure to peruse, however!
Then I happened to learn about the China Moon cookbook from online chat groups. I purchased the book and have been absolutely thrilled with it.
Now it's true that this is not a book of "15 minute recipes." But it is a book of great recipes, and preparation time will take from about 1/2 hour to a couple hours, on average. I don't think I have been disappointed with anything I made from this book.
It's also true that this is not exactly a book of authentic Chinese recipes. But who cares... the recipes are absolutely delicious, bursting with the essence of great Chinese food, the creation of a lady who obviously loves Chinese food too.
As one who likes to eat healthy, I also appreciate the author's emphasis on fresh foods and no MSG or other questionable ingredients.
Two great recipes I got from this book that just by themselves make it worthwhile: 1) the very best hot chili oil... way better than the stale stuff you buy pre-made... and 2) The best chicken stir-fry recipe. We make this basic recipe at least a couple times a month. It's so tasty it's hard to stop eating.

Here, at last, is a book on gardening with color by its most adventurous exponent, Christopher Lloyd.
Color for Adventurous Gardeners is about using color for maximum impact. Previous books on gardening with color have treated each color as a separate entity, but, in fact, colors work with and against each other, and must be viewed as relationships. This is the first book on gardening with color that explores how to make successful color associations with plants. Yes, there are color rules, but you have to know when and how to break them. Offering expert views based on his many years of experience, Christopher Lloyd explores each color and encourages readers to be adventurous and daring. "The limitations imposed by rules," he writes, "are a safe-haven, but the adventurous gardener will want to try something different."
Color for Adventurous Gardeners includes over 200 stunning photographs throughout its 11 chapters, each followed by a recommended plant list:

A South of the Future........2005-04-02
I enjoy the fantasy works of Stephen Donaldson, which is nothing like the short pieces included here. All of the writers have some connection to the South (however, one was born in L.A., Calif.), but many moved East as did James Agee and Richard Marius. At UT, we have professors determined to change Southern writing, one in particular who plans his own version of Agee's A DEATH IN THE FAMILY.
Some of these writers have had books published, like Fred Chappell. These stories are not necessarily 'of the South' nor literary. We are not a "crossroads" per se, but a destination. You might be surprised to learn how many transplants claim the South, but they don't talk Southern. No way.
Fine short story anthology with broad appeal.......2004-12-05
Hence the subtitle of the book, "Tales of the Southern Literary Fantastic." This book features prominent science fiction writers, such as Gene Wolfe, Jack McDevitt, Michael Bishop, Michael Swanwick and John Kessel (and for that matter, the editors), and it's published by noted SF publisher Tor. Yet there are also stories here by non-science fiction writers, such as Daniel Wallace (whose novel "Big Fish" was made into a movie) and Sena Jeter Naslund, who wrote "Ahab's Wife: or, The Star Gazer." The anthology is a mixture of original stories and reprints. A fantastic element is present in many but not all stories, with the editors settling for violence in a few cases.
About the only safe generalization I can make is that all of the stories are well-written. I have read many science fiction anthologies in my time, and this one is well above average. I liked some stories better than others, as happens whenever one reads a story collection, but because all of the stories were well-written, everything here is at least very readable. Because of the variety of literary backgrounds of the authors, the reader is likely to discover good stories by authors he has never heard of before.
Not much South but some Fantastical elements .......2004-10-16
In reading the book, I found that most of the stories (14) are not particularly southern. You could exchange the town/city name for any town/city of the US and it wouldn't change the story or it's atmosphere. It's more a book of US stories rather than southern stories. However, several of the stories had a very southern flavor such as A Plate of Mojo by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers and Houston 1943 by Gene Wolfe.
Many of the stories were light on the fantastical element. A Plate of Mojo by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, while an outstanding southern story had no fantastical elements other than an off-hand mention of a crow that belonged to the main characters mother. The Wounded by Richard Butner seemed to be a nod to Lovecraft; but it was missing the ambiguous feeling of fear and lacked focus. Alabama by Kalamu ya Salaam, wasn't really a story at all but an essay on justice and murder/suicide in the south. Interesting and well done but not really fantastical.
The stories that best displayed the elements of the fantasic included Houston 1943 by Gene Wolfe where a young boy is pulled out of his body by voodoo and tries to get his body back. Rose by Bret Lott is a creepy horror story of a lonely woman who seeks love in an unusual way. Michael Bishop's The Yukio Mishima Cultural Association of Kudzu Valley, Georgia is a hilarious romp where a careless remark causes a series of events to increasingly spin out of control. Mankind Journeys Through Forests of Symbols by Fred Chapell deals with dreams that become reality and the problems that can cause a small town police force. The Mikado's Favorite Song by Marian Moore plays with the theme of the path not taken crossing the path you take in life.
The stories are all worth reading. However, if you buy the book actually expecting fantastical, southern literature you will be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you just want to read well told tales with plot and characters whether they be southern or fantastical then you'll probably enjoy this book.

Cooking Chinese for Fun, Fun, Fun, Seriously!.......2005-03-08
This is not to say that it is a poor book. In fact, depending on what you want from a cookbook, for a trade paperback at a list price of $16.95, it may offer a lot more than the more serious `national cuisine manuals' or essays on the cuisine of an important culinary region such as Provence or Tuscany.
In addition to being a `fun' book, it is also a book about recipes from a particular restaurant, the `China Moon' owned by the author in San Francisco. This is a second point weighing against your learning any authentic Chinese cooking in a systematic manner from this book. But that doesn't say the book is not informative. One of the first things I noticed is a similarity between the approach to the pantry in this book and Ming Tsai's excellent second book, `Simply Ming', where his lead premise is in the creation of many base preparations which make cooking in a restaurant much faster than it would be if everything were done from scratch. Mme. Tropp's argument is that the many of the commercial preparations of things such as chili oil, hoisin sauce, and a dozen other pantry standards are simply bad. The claim is that one can do much better by making your own.
This argument is excellent for a high-end restaurant. It is also excellent for a household that eats Chinese meals at least three times a week and has three or four members, so these pantry preparations are used up on a regular basis. This also means that the book may be just a bit less valuable to someone who is not committed to making more than one or two dishes from this cookbook in a given month.
Although I am not as knowledgeable about Chinese cuisine as I am about French and Italian eating, I was struck at how uncharacteristic a lot of the recipes seemed to my picture of Chinese food. In the first few dozen pages, there are recipes for bread, pickles, cole slaw, clam chowder, and double stock. While there is no question that all these dishes are rooted in Chinese ingredients and techniques, there definitely seems to be more than a wink and a nod to Western tastes here.
This international flavor pervades the book. The last salad in the salad chapter is called `Paris Salad', discovered in a small Chinese restaurant in Paris, made with a very globalized mix of European, Asian, and New World ingredients.
The chapter on desserts and sweets, aside from a generous use of Oriental ingredients such as ginger and peanuts seems like it comes straight out of a Lyon patisserie, with lots of tarts, Biscotti, frangipane, chocolate, and cappuccino.
True to the Workman style of `fun' cookbook, there are lots of sidebars and headers showing the sources of the recipes, tips on presentation, hints on ingredients, and general chatter. There are also lots of good sidebars on techniques, but this is still nowhere near a text on good Chinese cooking praxis. In fact, a lot of the sidebars are on very Western techniques such as cookies and tarts. But this still leaves lots of room for some of my favorite Chinese recipes, including an excellent recipe for Hoisin Pork Buns with Ginger and Garlic. Note that these recipes do not shy away from using a wok whenever Chinese traditional technique calls for it. This is another reason you may not get the full benefit from this book if you are not committed to it's premises, such as using a wok properly, which requires a very good gas burner.
In the end, I think this book is the real deal on how to have fun with Chinese cooking. While it is based on recipes done in an American restaurant which probably caters to tourists, all the techniques are authentic and reliable, right down to the requirement that you let your dough for steamed buns rise in the fridge for at least 12 to 15 hours before shaping and filling.
This is a great book for cooking Chinese for fun. Its recipes are uniformly interesting, even though some of the interest may have a French accent. The author has the kind of reputation that gives you the assurance that she really knows what she is talking about.
Beautiful book -- pleased my imagination........2003-10-05

TRUE value!.......2003-03-24
The seldom-under-opinionated Christopher Lloyd provides text as colorful as the photos, so brace for throwaway remarks about mundane dahlia leaves and not being snobby about dandelion flowers. There is a reassuring coziness, too, as Lloyd reviews his delights and prejudices about gardening in general and on his own expansive plot.
Here's a Christopher Lloyd lecture and slide show to peruse at your leisure. Just like such events, the book is thoroughly informative and completely entertaining.

Encyclopedia of African-American Civil Rights: From Emancipation to the Present
Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313250111 |
Book Description
This is the first reference book presenting an overview of the century-long fight for true racial equality in America. This remarkable encyclopedia covers a wide array of events, legislation, court decisions, cultural achievements, speeches, organizations, and personalities that have contributed to the cause of African-American civil rights--from the Albany, Georgia "sit-in" of 1961 to the racially motivated killing of Samuel Younge in 1966; from the unjustifiable "Jim Crow" laws of the 1870s to President Bush's veto of the Civil Rights Act of 1990; from the first black illustrated newspaper, the Indianapolis Freeman, to the literary figures of the Harlem Renaissance. Outlined are the non-violent protests led by Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as the radical confrontationalism of Malcolm X. The peaceful 1964 March on Washington contrasts sharply with the Detroit race riots of 1967--but all the events covered in this volume are objectively and comprehensively summarized. The constant struggles against racism, segregation, and lack of opportunity are chronicled in more than 800 useful and readable entries. Written by over 100 authors, the entries also provide ready access to relevant literature in the field. The encyclopedia also contains a chronology, a general bibliography, and a subject index. It includes almost 100 illustrations.Customer Reviews:
