A significant postwar memoir written by one of Germany's best field commanders and a brilliant panzer tank general.
German general Erhard Raus was one of the most talented commanders to fight on the Eastern Front in Russia, where he was eventually appointed to army group command in early 1945. By the time the war ended, Raus had established a reputation as one of the German army's foremost tacticians of armored warfare, which made him a prized capture by U.S. Army intelligence. In American captivity, Raus wrote a detailed memoir of his service in Russia. His battlefield experience and keen tactical eye makes his memoir especially valuable.
The Raus memoir-now translated, compiled, and edited by prominent World War II historian Steven H. Newton-covers the Russian campaign from the first day of the war to his being relieved of his command at Hitler's order in the spring of 1945. It includes a detailed examination of Raus's 6th Panzer Division's drive to Leningrad, his experiences in the Soviet winter counteroffensive around Moscow, the unsuccessful attempt to relieve Stalingrad and the final desperate battles inside Germany at the end of the war.

Panzers Roll on.......2005-12-31
Excellent book. Covers the Eastern front from a General's point
of view who explains his tactics in various battles especially
covering his time commanding the 6th panzer division.When he
became a Corp and Army commander you get an overview of the battle which while good was a minor let down after
reading his exploits with the 6th panzer. I learned quite a few minor things as well. One...just because a unit was named a panzer corp or as a panzer army did not mean they actually had any panzer units.Several times they just had non motorized infantry units only.

I must say this was one of the easiest and best reads I had about the Eastern Front, I would reccommend anyone to read it.

One of the best books on combat I have ever read. The General has a very easy story telling style,that is extremely informative. It never gets boring, the details are relevant to the war going on around him. A must buy for the serious student of WW2.
Very Good, But..........2005-07-08
This is a very good book on operations on the Russian Front. Raus was clearly a very gifted commander, and his descriptions of his numerous successful operations (both offensive and defensive) are very interesting, as he discusses the risks associated with the various courses of action he could take, why he chose a particular course of action, and the results.
Raus was involved in a very wide variety of actions, from the attack toward Leningrad, forcing a passage on a troop-train through partisan-infested forests, attacks attempting to relieve Stalingrad, the Kursk offensive, and the defense of East Prussia. Once the Germans shifted to the defensive, Raus' "trademark" tactic was the flexible defense, in which he was (at least according to his testimony) very successful and which probably explains the interest of the US Army in his writings after the war.
This book is very good, but I'll mention a few reasons why I only gave it four stars, so you can judge for yourself:
--Raus rose from a relatively junior officer at the outbreak of war with Russia to an Army commander by the end of the war. While I was very interested in his descriptions of the small unit actions in the first part of the book, my interest waned as he became more senior, and I found his accounts of his actions as an army commander fairly dull.
--While Raus was clearly a very gifted commander, the book makes it sound like his unit was always succesful--all failures occurred under other commanders on other parts of the front (note that Raus never says this, it is just an impression that arises from reading his accounts).
--Maps are pretty sparse.
--I didn't find Raus' descriptions of his Russian opponents very objective--he basically describes them as very brave, tough, clever (in a sneaky sort of way), and prone to atrocities, with only their massive numbers saving them. Maybe this is the way it was, but I don't think Raus gave the Russkis enough credit.

Good, but not great.......2005-06-22
Remarkable commander who made do with very little at certain points during the conflict. But the trouble with first-person diaries or narratives are obvious from the beginning:
Makes no mention whatsoever of German atrocities, but mentions in the first part of book that the Totenkopf Division was attached to his Panzer Corp. He has no problem going into details about Red Army atrocities (they WERE just as horrible and it is good to see recent books focusing on it more and more). So this comes across as a bit of naive ethnocentrism and disingenuous.
Somewhat over-bloated pride concerning his own superior tactics and the pro-German narratives of certain battles. When the Red Army make any sort of victory at any scale he mentions it almost as if an aside, hidden at the end of the description.
The maps are not very good, small and lacking details, and much of the action that he comments on are not even depicted in the maps in the book.
The book does give good insights into the day to day battle decisions of a Panzer Commander on the Eastern Front. I look forward to reading more on the subject, but would have to put this below a third-person review of Guderian that I have read.

This book is virtually unreadable. Insofar as plot and characters: vapid, pointless, doesn't go anywhere unless you consider trekking to Buenos Aires with no clear plot point "getting somewhere." Insofar as writing: it is as if someone made notes in a spiral bound journal about her vacation and its aftermath, intended to write a book from them, forgot to write the book, and only published the scribblings.
This book is not about the tango.......2007-06-18
I can only confirm that this book is not about the tango but mostly about the personality of Marina Palmer. Given that the target group is that of TANGO lovers, not Marina Palmer fans, this book feels like a bait-and-switch.
What it shows clearly, however, is that whatever you do and wherever you go, you will always take yourself along. Being professionally frustrated and having a low self-esteem makes one see the outer world in negative colors and attract wrong kind of people.
I am sure that if Marina Palmer were to enter the world of, say, basket-weaving or table tennis she would find them just as wicked and disillusioning as her world of Argentine tango turned out to be.

I don't normally get caught up with reviews (and so I'll keep it brief) - but this time I believe it is this reader's duty to warn fellow Amazonians. Never have I read a worse book. It is sooo terribly written and says virtually nothing about tango. Save your money and hours of agony. I did like the book cover ; )
Don't waste your money.......2007-04-07
What a disappointment this book was - great subject (Buenos Aires and the fascinating culture of Tango) handled so poorly. This book actually made me wince at both the incredibly bad writing and the shallow values of the writer. I can't imagine why she would want to publish something so personal, so trite, and so confessional. This is a remarkably bad book.
Mildly entertaining, but..........2007-02-06
Sometimes I like reading smut. This definitely ranks as smutty and, as a result, is an entertaining romp, but it gets old REALLY quickly. I found myself skimming through most of it just so I could say I got through it. I hear they're making a movie out of it now. Are you kidding me?
I am North American who moved to Buenos Aires for a man I met in the tango. Knowing the milonga and the tango, the thought of someone finding The One in the tango scene is laughable, although my partner and I managed to find each other here and have been together for almost 2 years...and he is definitely not with me for my money, which is the typical attitude many of these tango dancers have toward foreign women. So, if you're thinking about coming to Buenos Aires to snag yourself a man, think twice. Tango is not all romance and passion. There is an undercurrent that is quite unpleasant. But, if you are coming here for a fling or two in a foreign country and are NOT looking for anything profound while you take advantage of the great dancing, by all means, come on down and enjoy!

The Eyes of Wonder.......2004-06-15
This collection of essays is glorious and sad. The writing lets the reader see what Barry Lopez is seeing with so few precise words. The gifts of wilderness are felt while reading sentences like, "You could feel the creek vibrating in the silt and sand.". The saddness comes from knowing these essays were written in the 1980's and so much more has been destroyed since then.
Due to when this book was written, there are a couple of references to former President Reagan's "environmental record" written in real time.
There were so many essays that I loved, including the one speaking of traveling the river with Paul Winter. I am going to quote a passage from "Children in the Woods".
"The quickest door to open in the woods for a child is the one that leads to the smallest room, by knowing the name each thing is called. The door that leads to the cathedral is marked by a hesitancy to speak at all, rather to encourage by example a sharpness of the senses. If one speaks it should only be to say, as well as one can, how wonderfully all this fits together, to indicate what a long, fierce peace can derive from this knowledge."
At the edge of the senses........2001-06-17
"I live in a rain forest in western Oregon, on the banks of a mountain river in relatively undisturbed country, surrounded by 150-foot-tall Douglas firs, delicate deer-head orchids, and clearings where wild berries grow" (p. 148), Barry Lopez writes in this collection of his 1978 to 1986 essays. Lopez allows each essay to tell a story leaving its reader with "an inexplicable renewal of enthusiasm." "It does not matter greatly what the subject is," he writes about storytelling, "as long as the context is intimate and the story is told for its own sake" (p. 63). Subjects of these essays include a stone horse intaglio, white geese at Tule Lake, boating the Colorado River with jazz musician, Paul Winter, bull riders, beached whales, searching for Anasazi remains, and "the passing wisdom of birds."
Readers will cross open ground in these essays and enter the natural world, becoming immersed in its much larger meanings. "Wildlands preserve complex biological relationships that we are only dimly, or sometimes not at all, aware of" (p. 80). These essays are rich in wilderness wisdom, enough wisdom to please any fan of Ed Abbey or Wendell Berry. "We grasp what is beautiful in a flight of snow geese rising against an overcast sky as easily as we grasp the beauty of a cello suite," Lopez writes; "and intuit, I believe, that if we allow these things to be destroyed or degraded for economic reasons we will become deeply and strangely impoverished" (p. 38). He quietly observes, "wilderness can revitalize someone who has spent too long in the highly manipulative, perversely efficient atmosphere of modern life" (p. 82).
Whether I'm reading his stories or essays, Barry Lopez is among my favorite writers. He will bring you to the edge of your senses: "Everything found at the edge of one's senses--the high note of the winter wren, the thick perfume of propolis that drifts downwind from spring willows, the brightness of woodchips scattered by beaver . . .all this fits together" (pp. 149-50).

Door to a cathedral of nature.......2001-01-06
Lopez is concerned with our collective understanding of nature. From studying a 3000-year-old horse intaglio to looking for Anasazi granaries he seeks our ancestral relationships. The essays work best when he mixes his reflection with keen observations. Where the essays have a heavier philosophical hand they aren't as effective. As he says "The door that leads to the cathedral is marked by a hesitancy to speak at all, rather to encourage by example, a sharpness of the senses". Lopez 's narratives sharpen many senses from the sudden assault of the sound of snow geese to "two snails small as pinheads chewing a leaf".
There are reflections on the role of biologists, from communicating between scientists and shipmates in the arctic to their role in a whale stranding. Perhaps he thinks biologists have greater insight, but he also understands the need for mystery and direct experience.
For Paul Winter fans there is a description of the raft down the Grand Canyon that produced the album "Canyon". As a current update, the snow geese written about in one essay are continuing to boom and damage their arctic breeding grounds.
Food for the soul.......1998-08-04
Excellent reading for those connected with the Earth. Food for the soul. One of the best gifts I have ever recieved.

Good Overview, Not Very Detailed.......2007-01-10
This was a good overview for our two week hiking trip in southern France. Because the book covers the entire country, there isn't much detail and only a couple of walks per region. I found the book to be mostly factual though a section on bus routes in the Gorges du Verdon was incorrect--we ended up having to wait an extra day to take a bus that the book said would be available. Overall we had an excellent trip, but really this book is more about exploring options than final planning. For the real work of getting from Point A to Point B, we relied on the French language materials we found in the country (I speak and read intermediate French).
If day walks are your thing . . ........2002-10-02
I am currently planning my walking holiday in France, so I am trying to learn as much as I can before I arrive. I found this book to be helpful in as far as it dealt with practical matters of conditions in France; such as visas, telephones and doctors. It also gave a good indication of the attractions that walkers will find in France on a regional basis.
I felt, however, that for a country famous for its very long distance trails, this book had an unhappy focus on short, often single day, walks. To be fair, it dealt in detail with the gruelling "GR20" trail in Corsica, but that was the only real endurance walk that it looked at. Given that these walks are my focus, I found this book to be something of a disappointment.
That being said, someone looking to enliven his holiday with one or more short, possibly overnight, walks could do a lot worse than this handy little book.

His name may be unfamiliar to many, but it is estimated that every adult alive in the United States today has handled objects designed by Viktor Schreckengost--from dinnerware and lawn furniture to toys, bicycles, and pedal cars. Born in Sebring, Ohio, and educated in Vienna, by the mid-1930s, Schreckengost had begun to pursue his interest in industrial design. For American Limoges, he created the first modern mass-produced American dinnerware, called Americana. Along with engineer Ray Spiller, Schreckengost designed the first cab-over-engine truck for Cleveland's White Motor Company. By the end of the decade, he had designed the first Mercury Bicycle for Murray. After World War II, Schreckengost created products for Sears, General Electric, Salem China Company, and Harris Printing, among many others. Approximately 100 million of his bicycles were manufactured by Murray.

Bullmastiffs : An Owner's companion.......2002-04-03
I bought this book in the hope that it would give me some insight in to the characteristics and personality of a bullmastiff. This book is good if you re wishing to breed your pet, but not very helpful for general owner information ie personality of your bed, training methods etc.
Sound advice..........2000-03-27
Firstly, I'm not related in any way although I have the same surname. Secondly, I have met the author on two seperatet occassions for a couple of hours and did acquire a puppy from him. So it could be said I'm biased but on the other hand I have a brief insight as to where he's coming from. Well, now to the book. It covers all aspects of ownership that one would need to know - from general ownership to preparing to enter shows. Aswell as the history of the breed and possible origins. The book is written in a way that explains 'why things are' and not just that 'they are', especially in regard to how your dog is built. I have read other Bully books and found they don't all cover those essentially daily ownership issues. This would be a must have on your bookshelf to anyone that is really serious about owning this type of dog. After reading it you'll probably find it'll turn into a starting reference for many enquires you may have. In summary: Readable, sound, practicle and written by someone whose dedicated decades to the breed. Buy it!

This volume deals with one of the oldest midrashim, the Eschatological Midrash from Qumran Cave 4. 4QMidrEschat, previously unknown, is preserved in at least two copies (4QFlorilegium, 4QCatena A) found at Qumran. A reconstruction of 4QFlorilegium and 4QCatena A is given in the first part of the book. The second part is a comparative analysis which shows that both manuscripts are copies of the same former work, 4QMidrEschat. The third part deals with the other exegetical Qumran texts, a definition of 4QMidrEschat's genre, its position among the Qumran literature, and its dating. 4QMidrEschat provides valuable information on Bible interpretation and eschatology among the Essenes in the first century BCE. 4QMidrEschat is of special significance because, according to recent studies, the Essenes are no longer to be regarded as a "sect", but as one of the most important Jewish groups of that time. FR Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung ist einer der altesten Midraschim uberhaupt, namlich 4QMidrasch zur Eschatologie (4QMidrEschat). Dieses bislang unbekannte Werk ist durch mindestens zwei Handschriften aus den Qumranfunden (4QFlorilegium, 4QCatena A) reprasentiert. Der erste Teil dieses Buches beinhaltet die materielle und textliche Rekonstruktion der beiden Handschriften 4QFlorilegium und 4QCatena A. In einem zweiten Teil erweist eine vergleichende Analyse beide als Kopien eines ursprunglich gleichen Werkes, 4QMidrEschat. Der dritte Teil bietet eine formale Untersuchung der ubrigen exegetischen Qumranliteratur, die Gattungsbestimmung, traditionsgeschichtliche Einordnung und Datierung von 4QMidrEschat. 4QMidrEschat liefert wertvolle Informationen uber Schriftinterpretation und Eschatologie der essenischen Bewegung im ersten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert. Da die neuere Forschung die Essener nicht mehr als eine Randerscheinung oder "Sekte" qualifiziert, sondern als eine der bedeutendsten Gruppierungen des Judentums der damaligen Zeit, erhalt das werk 4QMidrEschat seine besondere Bedeutung.
