good quality.......2007-03-26
old school cassette thus not as portable as audible style ones but the plus side is you can sell it or give it away when you're done like a book. Some day some rich guy's gonna sue for the right to give away or sell our digital music or audible licenses so they can be resold or traded like hardcopy styles like this can. Until that happens I'll continue to recommend cassette like this over digital versions.
Evanovich Does It Again -- And Does It Well.......2002-09-30
Janot Evanovich, author of the Stephanie Plum mystery series, has a hilarious writing style that both pulls readers into her stories and makes them laugh out loud. The audio versions of these stories are no different and in fact are possibly more amusing thanks to the vocal talents of Debi Mazar. Her Jersey-girl accent makes it feel like Stephanie is in the room with you and telling you about her mishaps, of which there are many. If there is ever a movie starring this plucky and clutzy bounty hunter, I would encourage casting agents to seriously consider Mazar. Her attitude and way of speaking fit the stories to perfection. These audio versions are abridged, which saves time but cuts out parts of each book. For anyone who has yet to read the books, I would encourage you to do so before listening to this format.
How can you cut Evanovich's words?.......2002-07-26
This series is toooooo good to cut a single word. I adore the analogies, characters, and descriptions in these books - I was sorely dissapointed to find these audio versions abridged.
DO THEM OVER UNABRIDGED and I will purchase every single audio and enjoy what I've already read and fell in love with.
Who makes these decisions and what in the world were they thinking????

Customer Reviews:
Royal intrigue.......2007-04-06
New enemies and new friends show up in the tenth volume of "Vampire Game," which wraps up the Zi Alda storyline about poisonings and vampires. But Judal throws some new twists into the second half of the manga, which hint at who the feisty princess might just end up with.
Someone calls out that someone's about to poison Princess Ishtar, and only a cunning switch keeps Leene from getting in big trouble for attempted assasination. And when they return to Pheliosta, Leene sends Ishtar a love potion as an attempt to make amends -- and using the potion extracts an unexpected confession from Ishtar.
Then Lady Sonia dies, and Yuujel brings up a bizarre (and seemingly untrue) claim -- that before marrying his father, she had gotten pregnant and left behind a secret son, who is none other than Darres! Some are outraged, some are shocked. But to become the heir to Zi Alda's throne, Darres must pass a test -- is he really a descendent of Saint Phelios, or not?
A lot of the tenth volume is made up either of wrapping up previous plots, or starting up the seeds of new ones. But Judal does give readers some nice development when it comes to Darres and Ishtar -- everybody is now aware that she's in love with Darres, and Yuujel is willing to go the distance to get them together. Quite nice of him, considering that he also loves her.
There's also a cute litle side story about who gets gifts for Valentine's day, and Duzell's first taste of chocolate. But Judal keeps in the essentials for the story -- Machievellian plotting, pretty jewelry, swirling clothes and hair, and a sinister glimpse at the shadowy enemy fortress. Not to mention some very funny dialogue ("Looking forward to working with you, Bats... but not as much as I'm looking forward to hearing that your services are no longer required").
Romantic realizations rule a lot of the characterizations in this volume, with Darres and Leene finding out who loves whom, and Leene realizing that her jealousy nearly got her hanged for treason. Lots of other minor characters make cameos, from all the subplots thus far -- although the revelation that Laphiji and Seilez are sleeping together is a bit icky. Sure, they're not biological brothers, but it's still odd.
The tenth volume of "Vampire Game" successfully wraps up the Zi Alda storyline, and introduces a shocking new one, leaving us hanging for the answer about Darres' ancestry.
Book Description
For people with diabetes, counting carbohydrates and fats is the approach recommended by dietitians. This user-friendly guide describes how to use many generic and brand-name foods in meal planning and teaches you to convert carbohydrate grams into carbohydrate exchanges. Nutrient counts for food planning, how to understand grocery store food labels, and how to incorporate different sources of food-count information into meal planning are also covered.

Old edition!.......2007-03-31
I bought this from Amazon without realizing it was old--the third edition was already out and for sale on Amazon, too, but I missed that. Do not buy the second edition!! As soon as my shipment arrived I ordered the third edition and suppose I'll be sending this one back--as hassle. Wish they had made this more obvious!
Helps one make informed meal choices!.......2007-03-12
I was recommended this book by a dietician...it basically helps you make informed choices when planning what to cook, when you're out shopping at the grocery store, and especially when you're eating out. It is amazing how many calories some of our meals contain and if we only took the time to really scrutinise the food we consume, I think it can make a lot of difference to our health. I keep this as a guide when I prepare meals at home, and it has also taught me how to read labels on packaged foods etc...won't it be great if all restaurants did the same when we eat out?
Learning about Carbs for Diabetes.......2006-11-02
I found this book to be helpful when learning more about carb counting and meal planning for people with diabetes. Thank you.
Diabetics carbohydrate and fat gram guide.......2005-08-17
Lots of good information. Cumbersome and hard to read due to the fact that it is landscaped and you have to turn the book to the side to read it.
A concise information resource.......2003-02-23
Good information about most conventional food.
I find it a bit difficult to find some items because they don't quite fit into the pigeonhole categories.
Great information for fast food items!

Sometimes, when you are Basque, you speak English with a French accent. Sometimes, that accent will sound a little more Spanish than not, and yet you are still Basque. Such are the complications of one of the more peculiar pockets of humanity to be found. For the country occupied by the Basque people is in both France and Spain while remaining unique unto itself. The Basque language is like no other, and no one knows where it comes from. Even Basque DNA is different than the DNA of other Europeans. Food--the taking of meals--is central to the culture. In some places it's a little more French than Spanish; in other places in Basque country, just the opposite is likely to be true.
Chef and restaurant owner Gerald Hirigoyen invites the reader into The Basque Kitchen. In page after delicious-looking page, Hirigoyen presents what he most loves about the cuisine. And rather than suggest that what he so loves remain frozen in a museum of cuisine, he embraces the foods and cooking techniques he has encountered in Paris and California. His Seared Ahi Tuna Steaks with Onion Marmalade honors his uncle's tuna and onion casserole. But instead of covering a tuna steak with onions and olive oil in a casserole and cooking a long time, Hirigoyen prepares an onion marmalade, then pan sears thick ahi steaks until they are hot and rare, and serves it all on a bed of lentils. He's saying that you have to be Basque to get there, but now that we have all arrived, we're somewhere else, yet connected.
And what a marvelous connection. The vast majority of the foods to be encountered between the covers of The Basque Kitchen are simple in nature, yet complex in the flavors they deliver. Potato and chorizo tortilla, an omelet of onion, potato, chorizo, salt, pepper, and parsley, gains added radiance with a little piment d'Espelette, powdered small, dried red peppers with a distinct flavor. Steamed mussels are prepared with tomatoes, crusty bread cubes, white wine, parsley, and chives. It's a dish from St.-Jean-de-Luz, over which the author proposed to his wife.
Gerald Hirigoyen brings to life the foods of his youth and family, as well as foods he has created from experience and whimsy. Refusing to be confined by tradition, Hirigoyen takes inspiration from Basque tradition and demonstrates the timelessness of the Basque kitchen. The benefits for one and all are right there, page after page after page. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
"To know how to eat is to know enough."
-- Old Basque Saying
Nestled among the Pyrenees, on both sides of the French-Spanish border, the Basque country is renowned as much for its fine culinary traditions as for its rugged terrain and the independent spirit of its people. Basque cooks are widely considered among the best in Europe, combining their love of fresh, simple ingredients with time-honored techniques. The joy of cooking and eating are central to Basque culture. In San Sebastián and throughout the region, men belong to cooking clubs, dedicated to the preservation of their outstanding cultural and culinary heritage. Outside the cooking societies, simple family meals turn into feasts of mammoth proportions, and everywhere conversation invariably turns to good food and the pursuit of it.
The Basque Kitchen, lusciously illustrated with photographs of the Basque region as well as its famous dishes, is the first major cookbook to explore Basque cooking on both sides of the border. Basque native Gerald Hirigoyen, named one of America s best chefs by Food & Wine magazine, celebrates the food and memories of his beloved homeland. He shares recipes for his favorite Basque specialties, from traditional renditions of Salt Cod "al Pil-Pil" and Pipérade to sumptuous soups, salads, meat, poultry, game, and of course, more seafood, all built on a bounty of fresh ingredients and carefully presented for the home cook. Hirigoyen's splendid interpretations have made his two San Francisco restaurants, Fringale and Pastis, critical favorites.
Customer Reviews:
In general, a good cookbook.......2007-04-28
Try the marmitako. This is to the Basque country as clam chowder to New England. The version in this book is excellent and can serve as a springboard for you to create your own version.
The Cuisine of the Pyrenees.......2006-03-24
Three years ago my son gave me a copy of The Basque Kitchen, written by his good friend Gerald Hirogoyen. The book has sat on my coffee table ever since, and whenever I am in the mood for something challenging and different, I have been trying out some of its recipes.
Then, a few days ago, my son treated me to a memorable dinner at Gerald's restaurant in San Francisco, "Piperade," which features many of the delectable dishes described in his book, and I had a chance not only to meet this kind and gentle chef but to sample firsthand his culinary skill with genuine
Basque cuisine.
The restaurant itself is a delightful place, its decor simple and rustic yet warm and friendly -- like the Basque people and countryside itself. We were treated like royalty and feasted on various Basque specialties: lamb chops with roasted Macheco cheese and potatoes, steak with mushrooms, fish with asparagus, and white wine from Gerald's own vineyards in Penedes, Catalunya.
Because my son and I lived in Spain for 13 years, we have visited all four of the Basque provinces, enjoying the beautiful Pyrenees mountains, the local culture, and their native foods. Lamb barbequed over an open hearth oven and bacalao (codfish) were special favorites.
Having worked my way through college as a part-time cook, I thoroughly relished reading about and then experimenting with many of the recipes. I found the directions easy to follow and, while my results may not have reached the perfection of Gerald's restaurant offerings, everything I prepared was tantalizingly tasty. A true gourmet delight! My personal favorites are stuffed squid in its ink, lamb chops, steak, steamed red snapper, and honey-glazed spare ribs, to mention only a few.
Anyone who has been fortunate enough to visit the Basque region will enjoy recreating some of its culinary specialties, and anyone willing to experiment with new tastes and techniques will consider The Basque Kitchen a real find.
tHIS IS THE REAL DEAL!.......2005-11-19
i HAVE OFTEN ENJOYED THE EXCELLENT BASQUE FOOD AT SAN FRANCISCO'S BASQUE HOTEL, SO I WAS QUITE FAMILIAR WITH THE EASY TO FOLLOW AND REALLY AUTHENTIC DISHES IN THIS TRULY FIRST CLASS BOOK. THE VERY WELL WRITTEN PREFACE TRACING THE HISTORY OF THE UNIQUE BASQUE PEOPLE WAS AN ADDED BENEFIT. HAVING NOW PREPARED MANY OF THE RECIPES FROM THIS BOOK, I CAN ONLY SAY IT IS REMARKABLE HOW WONDERFUL UNCOMPLICATED COOKING CAN BE.WHETRHER YOU ARE A NOVICE OR EXPERIENCED, YOU WILL BE REALLY SATISFIED WITH THESE RECIPES.
Beautfiul Book, Unusual Recipes, Needs an Editor.......2004-05-09
This book is full of gorgeous pictures and inviting, unusual recipes. Most of the recipes are relatively simple, although some hard-to-find ingredients are used. Its a great book; it could have used some more careful editing. Some of the directions seem puzzling or incomplete. A good book for an experienced cook, but probably a poor choice for a novice.
Exposes Us to Unknown Place and Its Cuisine.......2001-02-17
Nestled between the two cusine powerhouses of France and Spain, the Basque are influenced by these two, yet retain and developed a food tangent of their own.
Here, Chef Hirigoynen shares his passion for this region and its food. He takes liberties at times to add his own touches, which he has been serving up in his restaurants in San Francisco.
He provides a complete two page listing of sources for the hard-to-find ingredients as well as a listing of restaurants, etc. if one tours the Pyrnees region.
I've tried with delight the Sea Bream with Garlic Vinaigrette "A La Concha", Lamb Stew with Mixed Nut Pesto, and Quince and Goat Cheese Layer Cake with Candied Pine Nuts.

Book Description
Has anyone today any conception of the grandeur, the extent, the million board feet a day production...the entire meaning of the forests of the Pacific Northwest-the "Big Woods"? The photographs alone in this absorbing book will instantly transport the reader into this former world. Here was the greatest stand of Douglas fir timber in existence and here was labor for the Poles, Finns, Swedes and Norskies lured out of the Midwest to convert the mammoth trees into the lumber that helped build the West Coast cities. Ralph Andrews presents a fascinating subject-the hope, courage and tragedy in the lives of the men and women who opened up the dense native forests or as the loggers said "brought daylight into the swamp," and converted the trees into the lumber which built the West Coast cities. Here are many nostalgic scenes showing high climbers, fallers balanced on high springboards, yokes of oxen and up to eight spans of horses dragging logs on skidroad, yokes of oxen and up to eight spans of horses dragging logs on skidroads to flumes, rivers and salt water, early donkey engines, railroads on steep grades, logging camps as well as devastating fires. Andrews' style of writing is graphic and spirited with strong emphasis on human interest.
Customer Reviews:
Another excellent tribute to the loggers of the PNW.......2005-01-05
From the late 1950s into mid-1960s Superior Publishing provided an outlet for Ralph W. Andrews to publish a number photo books of working men of the Pacific Northwest. Timber is one of those books. If one has only a passing interest in how logging used to be then probably one or two books would suffice. On the other hand if you're like me and enjoy collecting all of his works you can still find most of them still available. "Timber" has a number of great photos from when logging started with oxen and then later with donkeys (the mechanical kind not the animal) but it also has some great stories and photos about the terrible fires in Idaho during 1910. There's also the background about the Tillamook Burn of 1933 in Oregon. Most of these books by Andrews have a similar approach which is a number of black and white photos combined with stories told to Andrews or which he's gleaned from periodicals long since discontinued. While Andrews has had his critics for his approach, thankfully there was a person such as he willing to do the work in collecting the photos and Superior willing to publish them.

A What and When of Gardening in Ohio.......2007-09-02
A very thorough and well organized guide. It not only tells you what to do but helps you frame the questions you should be asking. Highly recommended.
GREAT GARDENING BOOK.......2007-01-14
I bought my first house in October 05 and I wanted beautiful spring and summer flowers. The property had roses and several other perennials. I needed a book that would help this beginner know what to do with what was already there as well as help me add new plants and flowers. I reviewed 25 gardening books from my library network last spring. This was by far my favorite. It gives you all the things you should know for lots of different flowers and plants and lets you know things you should be doing each month...like plant, prune, fertilize, etc. There are two versions of this book the original and this revised version. The revised costs a little more but there are color pictures in this edition as well as a much better layout in general. To me the newer edition was worth every extra penny and is the only one that I actually purchased out of all the books I reviewed. A must have for any Ohio gardener.

Customer Reviews:
Must Have!.......2006-08-15
Being new to gardening, this book has been the most valuable tool. Every page has pictures of the plants that are being described and there are symbols to quickly identify plant properties. I would definitely recommend this book for everyone.
Great Book For Ohio.......2006-05-11
This is the book I go back to over and over again. It's organized, well written, and most of all, RIGHT. I've had it for a couple of years. When I picked it up again last night to see which birches will grow well in Ohio, I decided to write a review here on Amazon to encourage others to get this book, too. It's worth every penny.
Great for any Ohio gardener. .......2005-07-11
I have had this book for years, have loaned it so many times it's not funny! Finally, just started ordering several copies at a time to have on hand for gift giving. I have 16 large flower beds, and most of the plants ideas have come directly from the advice I have found in this book. These are also the plants I have the most success with, AND the ones asked most about when people come to visit my garden. Also, for the most part, these selections are relatively easy to find in our nursery's. [Seibentahaler's and Knollwoods are excellent places to look]. I hope he continues his writings, and I will be ordering his new book also. Centerville, Ohio
Great book for Ohio gardeners.......2002-12-01
Ohio is not the most hospitable place for gardening. With cold winters and hot often dry summers, gardening can be a balancing act. This book is a terrific guide for selecting and cultivating plants in this area. This book has helped me improve my black thumb to almost green. Recommended for all Ohio and surrounding areas.
An expert gardener right at your fingertips!.......2002-11-16
If your grandma were an expert gardener, this is like having all her advice right in one place. I have used this inexpensive, thorough gardening book much more than my expensive hardcover gardening books. This book is great for a novice gardener, and also for more experienced gardeners. He gives a full 2-pages for each plant, telling where to plant, when to trim, when to plant, varieties/cultivars, and much more. He answers pretty much any question you could have about a certain plant. I take this with me when I'm shopping for my plants, because he tells you lots more than the plant tag will. I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone who likes to garden! Too bad he doesn't cover vegetables or herbs, though.

Book Description
The growth of the Church in the last two centuries has been paralleled by an explosion in the number of languages into which all or part of the Bible has been translated. This book is perhaps the first serious effort to examine a number of issues related to that phenomenon, among them how theology can affect the kind of translation prepared, and how the type of translation itself can affect the theology of a church. It also addresses the topics of why a church generally develops faster and with a deeper faith if it has the Bible; how decisions of text, canon, exegesis, type of language and type of translation are related to the matter of authority; what forces are at play in a culture to which a translator must be sensitive; and how Bible translation affects a society and culture. The authors of these papers are distinguished scholars in the fields of missiology, history, cultural anthropology, theology or church history. Some address theological issues of Bible translation, and others the cultural and political questions. But ultimately they conclude that if the church of tomorrow is to grow, and not be fragmented, then access to the Bible will be crucial.
