Clean New World: Culture, Politics, and Graphic Design

Clean New World is a somewhat disjointed collection of essays that promises a fresh take on an old dilemma: graphic designers provide the glossy public face of big corporations but are not permitted (or motivated) to reveal the messier realities that underpin public power. Beginning with the exception that proves the rule--the leftist photomontages made by John Heartfield in Weimar Germany--Maud Lavin segues to such contemporary themes as corporate identity work, political art coalitions, and the role of advertising in the U.S. abortion debate. Along the way, the author spotlights women in graphic design who balance bread-and-butter clients with more personally meaningful work and discusses how Web design can make users feel "controlled or in control." The final chapter deals with the cathartic effect a Web-based "soap opera" had on its creators, an eight-writer team that included the author, a faculty member at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.Maxims pronounced by the gurus of graphic design tend to go unchallenged by practitioners in the field, so you want to cheer Lavin when she butts heads with received wisdom, including Paul Rand's belief that simplicity in design is inherently "truthful." As she points out, the striated logo Rand designed for IBM in 1956 does not reflect some indisputable fact about this corporate behemoth. The reality is just the reverse--corporations seek to cloak themselves in the clean, bright look of good design. But the author's arguments can lack rigor. For example, she discusses how former CBS creative director William Golden teamed up in the '50s with artist Ben Shahn to develop advertisements for a documentary program. Lavin lauds these ads as "humanistic" without stopping to consider the inherent qualities of illustrations in graphic design and the preconceptions evoked by Shahn's well-known style. Several of these essays were originally given as lectures, which might account for their underwhelming effect on the printed page. But why not stretch out and delve deeper when you have a whole book to play with? --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
Our culture is dominated by the visual. Yet most writing on design reflects a narrow preoccupation with products, biographies, and design influences. Maud Lavin approaches design from the broader field of visual culture criticism, asking challenging questions about about who really has a voice in the culture and what unseen influences affect the look of things designers produce. Lavin shows how design fits into larger questions of power, democracy, and communication. Many corporate clients instruct designers to convey order and clarity in order to give their companies the look of a clean new world. But since designers cannot clean up messy reality, Lavin shows, they often end up simply veiling it.Customer Reviews:

Clean New World: Culture, Politics, and Graphic Design.......2001-04-24
The book is a group of connected essays which can be read independently or as a whole. Its intended audience is broad and Lavin's writing style is clear enough to engage those unfamiliar with graphic design even while being sophisticated and intelligent enough to engage the professional designer, design historian, or art historian.
I find her essay on Kurt Schwitters and the Circle of New Advertising Designers in 1920's and 1930's Europe to be the finest which I've read on the topic. I also find her collection of interviews with women graphic designers to be particularly interesting and enjoyable. What these two essays have in common is their engagement with questions of creativity and compromise - a complex and underestimated dialectic in graphic design and one which Lavin makes uniquely evident. In bringing that evidence to bear on different forms of creativity (and different forms of compromise) - be it on the internet or in the visual politics of the abortion debate - Lavin is pushing the boundaries of both design and cultural criticism.
For that it deserves a lasting spot on my bookshelf.

Ships and Sea-Power Before the Great Persian War: The Ancestry of the Ancient Trireme (Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum)
H. T. Wallinga Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004096507 |
Book Description
This book presents a new theory about the developments in shipping and naval organization that culminated in the invention - around 530 BC in the eastern Mediterranean - of the trireme, and the subsequent adoption of this first specialized warship of antiquity by all the naval powers of the time. New interpretations are proposed of Greek and Assyrian iconographic data and of hitherto ignored evidence in Herodotos and Thukydides, the non-military factors determining developments are emphasized. Thukydides' fundamental essay on the genesis of Greek sea-powers is studied in depth, the rarity of these sea-powers stressed, and the peculiar background of the naval power of Phokaia and the Samian tyrant Polykrates exposed. The problem of the trireme's place of origin, the factors determining its invention, probably in Saite Egypt, and its immediate adoption by the Persian king Kambyses are discussed. The first naval operations of the Persians are surveyed, reasons and circumstances of the trireme's introduction into the navies of the Greek city-states analysed with special attention for Themistokles' navy bill. The book offers ancient historians and classical philologists a radically new approach to archaic maritime and naval history. It will also be useful to (nautical) archaeologists.
