    Book Description

Early in 1881 unrest in the Sudan began to crystallise around Mohammed Ibn Ahmed el-Sayyid Abdullah. Proclaiming himself the long-expected Madhi, the Guided One of the Prophet, he preached that the Sudan was to be purged of its Egyptian oppressors. Drawn in by the Egyptian failure to deal with the situation, the British sent General Gordon to organise an evacuation. On reaching Khartoum however, General Gordon believed, incorrectly, that the Madhi could be reasoned with. Instead of negotiating, the Madhi besieged the town for 317 days. This title looks in particular, although not exclusively, at the battles fought by the British columns sent to relieve Khartoum.

Michael was my professor for the Honors Global Issues class at Wilmington College for Fall 2002 term, so I might be slightly biased. =) However, I found the book to be easily followed. The subjects flowed nicely and it was easy to understand. Studying from the book took little time as there is not a bunch of B.S. in it. Great job, Mr. Snarr!

            Book Description

Translated into a dozen languages, printed in hundreds of editions, and read by millions of people, Franklin's autobiography has had an influence perhaps unequaled by any other book by an American writer. Written ostensibly as a letter to his son William, the autobiography offers Franklin's reflections on philosophy and religion, politics, war, education, material success, and the status of women. This edition of the autobiography, prepared by the editors of The Papers of Benjamin Franklin, is drawn with scrupulous care from the original manuscript in Franklin's handwriting now in the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery. The introduction by Leonard W. Labaree places the autobiography in literary and historical contexts. In a new foreword, Edmund S. Morgan writes about Franklin's dual allegiance as an American and a subject of an English king—and his emergence as a leader of the American Revolution. This edition also includes biographical notes, a chronology of Franklin's life, and an updated bibliography.

4 out of 5 stars The Human Side of an American Icon.......2007-02-27

Like so many people I only know Benjamin Franklin from school and history books where he comes across as someone stiff and formal. But here in the first half of this book we find Ben Franklin the boy. We hear him complain of his parents, his restrictions, quarrels with his brothers, and of course things that all boys do. He steals from a construction site to build a fishing pier -- and gets caught. We see him finally breaking away and moving to Philadelphia where he arrives with very little money and must subsist on bread. He describes his youth and his gradual maturity as he builds his life and fortune. Interestingly this book leaves some doubt as to whether he was actually married to Deborah Read or had an "arrangement". I particularly enjoyed his description of General Braddock and his defeat by the Indians. Although this was only briefly touched on this and other similar references to the English gives you insight into why the colonists rebelled. Clearly the English completely misjudged the American Character as most Europeans do even today.

Unfortunately the second half of this book was written after the war and when Franklin was an old man and clearly not terribly interested in finishing this book. It reads as an after thought and really doesn't provide any insight into his role or the extraordinary people and events of which he was a part. But it does show the close relationship he had with his son so when the estrangement came it must have hurt him deeply although this is a subject not mentioned at all in the book.

However, the editors have kindly provided a marvelous timeline in the appendix, which really gives you a summary of the Revolutionary War as it places various key events into perspective. You see the impact that John Paul Jones's victory over the Serapis had on events in Paris. It shows how Franklin's diplomatic skills had a huge effect on the ultimate outcome of the war.

Franklin was an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. He writes about himself rather modestly and really doesn't touch on his activities during the war in any detail and for this reason I only gave this book four stars. Still this is an interesting book about a truly fascinating man.

4 out of 5 stars Life Lessons for All.......2007-02-13

Well, it has been nearly 30 years since I first read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography and one can still gain some insights after a second reading. The American icon's wisdom and insights are time honored and worth repeating.

This edition has copious footnotes on every page unlike at the end of the book. The authors may have felt that the reader would be interested in the quick reference aspect verses paging to the back. Though this can be a little strange a first, I get their point and maybe it was better this way.

One aspect that I would have liked; however, would have been if they had added some of his other selected writing like "The Way to Wealth" and others. Irrespective, this is a good edition and recommended as one of the more authoritative editions.

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse into the mind of an American icon.......2006-03-11

The autobiography of Ben Franklin is a worthwhile read simply because of who Ben Franklin is. It is beneficial to understand the character of this great man by judging him through his own words. There is no doubt that Franklin was an ingenius man and his witty rhetoric further confirms his intelligence. It also confirms his egotistical nature I hate to say.... But I suppose he had every right given his success...
Anyhow, I thought the first portion of the book (written before the revolution) was much more interesting that the latter half. Unfortunately the autobiography was never really finished by Franklin. He ends off abruptly during the French and Indian War period and there is nary an remark concerning American Independence, which would have been interesting to read about from his point of view.
Still, overall, it's worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Why did Franklin write his autobiography?.......2005-03-24

The purpose of the book is difficult to pin down, primarily because Franklin never completed and cohesively tied his biography together. The purpose, it seems, is then left to the effects that it has had upon history. Although difficult to follow and often a confusing narrative, Franklin composes a portrait of the prototypical American success story, perhaps even the first. His emphasis on personal virtue and industry is a sermon not only to his son, but also to Americans throughout time, on the formula for success. His descriptions of life in the colonies and the nature of self-teaching seem to set the standard for history's view of pre-revolutionary America.

The ethics of clean living and a hearty work ethic that Franklin sought to impart upon his son are still alive as ideals of the "American dream." Although it can be argued how much of a dream this really is, the value given to hard work and personal responsibility are very much a part of the American rhetoric that is indoctrinated through political and nationalistic institutions. It seems undeniable that Franklin hoped to have a lasting effect on future generations, as he certainly did not succeed in living the virtue of humility.

While vanity certainly must play a part in the drive for any public figure to pen to paper and detail their life, part and parcel with that is the desire to be a good role model to a wide audience. Franklin seems to have prided himself on being a good role model throughout his life, from his time in England until returning to Philadelphia, assisting others in setting up businesses and becoming self-sufficient.

We can only speculate what Franklin's reasoning must have been. Indeed, it may be that assuming history will have well recorded the time period, a personal account was unnecessary. It may be that Franklin simply never finished his Autobiography and certainly intended to return to the subject. Whatever the reasons may be, this is certainly the most jarring and notable deficiency from an otherwise detailed record of the life of one of our most important statesmen.

5 out of 5 stars Why this book Matters.......2004-04-25

knowledge scales and political sophistication are key variables in social science studies that often are used without really thinking about what they mean or measure. This book provides insight into this problem and real solutions to solve it, in addition to the primary context of how informed americans are about politics. Great work and a must have for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Who Knows What and Why.......2004-03-09

Anyone interested in the knowledge levels of the American public, especially in terms of political opinions and where that type of knowledge comes from, will find this book very informative and rewarding. Delli Carpini and Keeter have accumulated a very well researched and documented mass of data concerning what the American people know about many different categories of politics. In an enlightening fashion they break down political knowledge not just into different categories of information, but also by demographic categories in the general population. We find that socio-economic status is as important to political knowledge levels as personal interest or media exposure, leading to occasionally worrisome conclusions about how average people can truly make a difference.

This book does sometimes lapse into unnecessarily complex statistical models rife with under-explained regression analyses and coefficients (which should have been relegated to the Appendix section), while the writing style tends to be repetitive and is generally very verbose. Meanwhile, the conclusive analysis of "why it matters" is a bit rushed at the end of the book. But regardless of those issues, this book shows convincingly that the American public's knowledge of their own nation's politics is both more complex than may be expected, but that their knowledge is not always put to the most effective uses. Happily, the authors show that citizens typically do not consign political perceptions into simplistic liberal vs. conservative and black-and-white ideologies, as you may guess from the behavior of politicians and the media. However, we can also see here that the knowledge of the American masses is not frequently put to the best of uses, either by themselves or their leaders. [~doomsdayer520~]

4 out of 5 stars an important book.......2000-10-11

*What Americans Know About Politics and Why It Matters* is an important book in that it reveals how informed voters have more stable, consistent opinions and are much more resistant to irrelevant information (such as commentary in the media and campaign rhetoric, sound bites, and photo ops). It also reveals that informed voters hold opinions that more closely match those of the Founders of the United States -- including personal responsibility and limited federal powers -- than do those who are ignorant of the issues.

              5 out of 5 stars Revealing.......1999-08-12

I thought it showed the ignorance of the American voter, and the dire need for voter education. In my opinion, the average American urgently needs voter education. I believe that voter education will produce a Democratic majority, and this book gave me data to back up my beliefs.

I have 2 editions of this book, it's more like a guide, I'm going to order another one as I lost the last edition I bought which was updated from the first edition. This book is what got me started on my tree identification, which I now know all the trees quite well, and is kind of a second little hobby for me.This is a straightforward guide with pictures, a little section on forest succesion, and each tree has a plate to identify leaves, seeds, and a description of where abouts it most likely grows and whereabouts you would most likely find it.I wore out he first edition, missing pages and covers,I got it when I was very young after going on camping trips, and would bring it along with me wherever I would camp or take hiking trials in the woods. It is a good book for learning for kids and teenagers.

A drawing book for planning and organizing the design of Web pages. Planning a Website is a very involved and artistic undertaking. It requires the artist to create preliminary sketches of the overall design, negotiate a color scheme that consists of Web safe hues, and keep an account of what all the links are. Even more complex for designers is the process of optimizing the various components for display on the Web so that the end result is an appealing site and one that loads quickly. This sketchbook provides a template for Web Designers utilizing any of a wide range of Web applications. With over 196 pages of quality drawing stock, this book provides enough space to design at least two extremely elaborate websites or numerous smaller sites. The choice is yours!

4 out of 5 stars Book covers all things Coin Operated.......2005-10-23

The book's title might cause you to be disappointed if you're looking for a complete resource on slot machines. There is a chapter devoted to them, but this book is not a half slot machines, half coin-op guide as the title suggests. My guess would be that slot machine collecting was at a peak when this book came out and the book was titled to grab attention.
A more appropriate title might have been "History of Coin-Op Games including Slot Machines".

Besides that, if you want a mini-history of these machines along with some nice color pictures, this book is for you. Time period covered is 1889 to 1988.

There are 9 chapters covering Penny Arcade Machines, Baseball Machines, Gun Games, Bowling Machines, Pinball Machines, One-Armed Bandits, Novelty Arcade Games (part 1), Novelty Arcade Games (part 2) and Owning Your Own.., along with an author's introduction and an index which directs you to every page a particular game is mentioned or a picture is located.

Well written book with lots of pictures to remind you of times past and games you have long forgotten about. If you're over thirty, you will have many "oh, I remember playing THAT one" moments.

You'll be glad you added this one to your game-room collection.

                                    1 out of 5 stars slot machines?...where?.......2003-05-29

the title starts with slot machines. well there's only ten pictures of slot machines and three are blurry and two are drawings.i went through it in two minutes. don't buy for the slot machine part.

4 out of 5 stars A great review of all the machines you've forgotten.......1999-12-06

Kurtz had done a beautiful job documenting many of the other arcade machines. Not slots, not pins (though both are covered) but the fortune tellers, strength testers, helicopter simulators, safe-cracking games, baseballs and bowlers that were in the rear corners of the arcades of my boyhood.

The photography is first rate. He's gone to a lot of trouble to light and photograph terrific examples. There's the usual brochure copy as well. The copy is well written, but this book is really about the pictures and captions.

A great item for your gameroom!

                                        Book Description

This book retraces the life and work of Julius Pflug (1499-1564), humanist, man of the church and diplomat. Born from a family of Saxon knights, Julius Pflug was educated mostly in Italy under such masters as Amaseo and Bonamico - hence his excellent Latin style, which even Erasmus admired. During his ecclesiastical career he was provost of Zeitz, dean of Meissen and bishop of Naumburg-Zeitz. As such he attended the Council of Trient in its second period (1551/52). Pflug has attracted the attention of historians mostly on account of his role in the so-called Colloquies of religion designed to put an end to the religious schisms which divided the Church as well as the Empire: Regensburg (1541 and 1546), Worms (1557), over which he presided. After the Peace of Augsburg (1555), he was only able to save the remnants of Catholicism in his own diocese. The interest of this biography is twofold: firstly, it allows us to survey the progress of the Lutheran Reformation, which Catholic apologists such as Pflug, Gropper, Witzel were unable to stop. Secondly, as Pflug was entangled in all the political and religious events of his time, this book reveals a wide range of personalities in Saxony and Germany, and imperial circles at large. On the other hand, if Pflug's work belongs to a period of transition, it retains through its irenic character an interest of topicality, while opinion is more sensitive to conciliation than to opposition of confessional differences. Following the analysis of the sources due to the publication of Pflug's Correspondence by the same author (published by Brill 1969-1982), this monograph gives a more synthetic view, which addresses itself to a larger public.
