Book Description

The Animal Factory goes deep into San Quentin, a world of violence and paranoia, where territory and status are ever-changing and possibly fatal commodities. Ron Decker is a newbie, a drug dealer whose shot at a short two-year stint in the can is threatened from inside and outside. He's got to keep a spotless record or it's ten to life. But at San Quentin, no man can steer clear of the Brotherhoods, the race wars, the relentlessness. It soon becomes clear that some inmates are more equal than others; Earl Copen is one of them, an old-timer who has learned not just to survive but to thrive behind bars. Not much can surprise him-but the bond he forms with Ron startles them both; it's a true education of a felon.

5 out of 5 stars where they put the human waste.......2003-04-24

Edward Bunker and I have a lot in common; we were both sent to prison for lengthy time periods for armed robbery. While in prison we both had our first books published.Since being released from prison we have remained free but have had to deal with the eternal stigma of having once been "guests of the State". I'm here to tell you that no one has been able to capture the boredom, frustration and quicksilver outbursts of violence that characterize prison better than Eddie Bunker does in ANIMAL FACTORY. He is simply the greatest "crime" writer ever. He's been there. He's done it. A fiercly determined and talented man, Edward Bunker is an inspiration to me.

3 out of 5 stars A good book that could've been great.......2002-01-31

Few writers can describe more effectively the horrors of prison - the Animal Factories that turn minor offenders into hardened criminals and murderers - than Edward Bunker. This is the first and only of his books that takes place entirely inside the walls of a prison. I expected more.

Bunker's weakness has always been his dialogue. "The Animal Factory" features his worst attempts at writing dialogue. His descriptions of prison life are vivid and real. The words he forces into his character's mouths bring the flow of the narrative to a screeching halt. This is particuarly pronounced in the relationship between the new arrival - a young man who has been sentenced on a drug charge - and the hardened convict who befriends him, a relationship that doesn't ring true.

"The Animal Factory" is not without its merits. As we see the young convict, Ron, change his values and actions in order to survive, it's hard not to view prison as anything but a another phase in the making of a career convict. Bunker effectively portrays prison as a breeding ground for a more violent, desperate brand of criminal. Unfortunately, the weaknesses of this book outweigh the merits.

For readers who have heard of Bunker but have not yet read him, I wouldn't recommend "The Animal Factory" as a starting point. Try "Little Boy Blue" - Bunker's best work - instead.

3 out of 5 stars A good book.......2001-12-17

Everyone,
This is a good book. However, I expected a little more from it. When I bought this book I was expecting to see a real look at prison society and life. It was a little too politically correct for me. I was expecting a gritty California prison novel, but I was greeted with a look at prison from the eyes of what seemed to be a middle class author and not a convict. It just didn't seem all that real. It seemed like I could have thought up the ideas myself. But, it was a really great read and I will buy more Edward Bunker books. His writing is addictive(I finished the book in less than 2 days), and I really want to read another to see how different or similar it will be. I would recomed this book for anyone who enjoys crime novels or prison novels, but I will read another one of Bunker's books before I tell people that he is worth reading more than once.

3 out of 5 stars The Animal Factory..........2001-11-18

The Animal Factory is a great intro book for those who aren't familiar with the rest of Edward Bunker's stabs at fiction.

Though it drags on in places it is great narrative (though not the best) about life in jail. Edward Furlong starred in a film version directed by Steve Buscemi (Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs) that does the book justice. So if your still unsure about reading this book, at least check out the movie. Mickey Rourke does a great job as a transvestite con.

FYI: Edward Bunker has a small part in Reservoir Dogs, I think he was Mr. Black.

4 out of 5 stars The Solzhenitsyn Thing.......2001-02-19

So it aint Solzhenitsyn, and there should probably be a law against making the comparison - which I'd be all for: can you imagine that first day inside?

"What you in for?"

"Comparing Eddie Bunker to Alexander Solzhenitsyn."

(Con whistles in admiration.)

Eddie Bunker was a rotten crook who pulled a bank job and got caught. Alexander Solzhenitsyn was locked up in a gulag under a despotic regime that didn't allow freedom of speech. (I'm generalising here, but stick with me, okay?) Bunker got his just desserts (some might say). Solzhenitsyn (again I'm generalising but) was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You might also think that you have to buy into what is quickly developing into a culture of admiration for nasty ne'er-do-wells. People (and by people I mean: publishing executives, film moguls, idiots) like to romanticise the villain. Just watch "McVicar" or "The Krays" or even "Chopper" (which, credit where credit's due, is a great movie). Read any of the chancy memoirs written by the gallery of supposedly lovable rogues (your Mad Frankie Frasers), who would like to give the impression that they only ever dispatched those who "deserved" it. Watch "Lock Stock & Two Mightily Over-rated Barrels." Read anything by Jake Arnott or James Hawes.

You don't, though. You don't have to buy into all that to like Eddie. (Although you'll have to get over the psychological obstacle of it: the publishers want you to think that Eddie is part and parcel of that whole thing. They include stupid quotes from stupid lad mags on the cover. They print the title in a font that aims to resemble the kind of print left by an ink-stained stamp. "The Animal Factory" has a grainy prison shot. Other Bunker novels have splashes of blood on them. You wonder why they didn't just go the whole hog. Write EDWARD BUNKER IS TOUGH or HE'S BEEN THERE, BABY, AND HE'S HERE TO TELL YOU ABOUT IT!)

All of which does Edward Bunker a grave disservice. He's a great writer. Regardless of anything else - regardless of the fact of his having a past - he is a great writer. The Solzhenitsyn thing is apposite. There are, in fact, many similarities between this book and "...Ivan Denisovich". Bunker has a tremendous eye for details. It would be the easiest thing in the world to write an Elmore Leonard-lite prison novel revolving around authentic prison dialogue (authentic, yes, because Bunker has been there, I know). He doesn't do that, though. It would be easy to write and easier to sell.

What I think is this.

In "Waiting for Godot", Vladimir says "What do we do now?" and Estragon replies "Wait." I would imagine that that question - What do we do now? - gets asked a lot in prison. You've got time on your hands. You don't even have Godot to pretend to look forward to. Seems to me that Bunker read. His writing is informed with other books. "The Animal Factory" is as self-referentially canonical as T.S. Eliot would have any book be. I don't know the in's and out's of Bunker's life (and I'm quite happy with that), but I reckon he read a lot and started writing as a way to fill the otherwise empty hours.

It could have been that - without prison, without mixing in a hard-boiled, ugly crowd - he would never have wrote anything down. Could be any number of things. Whatever the reason, Bunker started writing and his hard, authentic voice is stripped of sensation and mightily persuasive. Bunker's characters are the flotsam spewed out of the machine that Sherman McCoy gets sucked into mid-way through "Bonfire of the Vanities" (mid-way through "Bonfire of the Vanities", just after Sherman gets arraigned, he emerges from the court house feeling dead, feeling chewed up and spat out but mostly dead - and that's the product that fills Bunker's books - all these lost misinformed souls in a different kind of gulag).

      Book Description

The Beejum Book offers a journey into a world of fantasy that, deep down, each of us knows and longs for. It tells the story of Teak, a child living abroad between the two World Wars. Teak's mother tells her not to worry about being left alone, because every night, when she goes to sleep, they can meet in Beejumstan.

Teak's travels to this magical realm bring her face to face with Lonesome, a well-attired rabbit and Beejumstan's “ambassador without portfolio”; Figg Newton, the alchemist; the witches Rudintruda and Idy Fix; Gezeebius, the Wise Old Man; and many other fascinating characters.

Alice O. Howell is a wise woman who can present deep truths in simple and engaging ways.

Through this enchanting tale, she suggests that within us are many worlds as real and compelling as the one we know outside. Delightfully told and charmingly illustrated, The Beejum Book offers seekers of all ages a beautiful way of imbibing wisdom.

      5 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise!.......2005-09-11

Our 6-year-old grandson took me into his bedroom and locked the door. "Do you have a book to read?" he asked. "Yes," I said, "I have many." "Well, you must read this book, and as soon as you finish, you must bring it back." He handed me "The Beejum Book." I was not especially looking forward to reading a children's book, but I began that evening. Soon I was reading passages aloud to my husband, astounded at Ms. Howell's clever weaving of valuable lessons into her amazing tale. I rationed my readings, extending the pleasure as long as possible. When I came to the end, I handed the book to my husband. He read it straight through. The tale is wonderful, the lessons for all.

5 out of 5 stars The Cahoots of Beejumstan .......2005-05-18

In every child the Cosmos is born anew, and Alice O. Howell in the Beejum Book has a way of returning the favor. In Beejumstan, eternal truths rebirth into moments fresh and young. So many different people inside of each of us, all examining the world, wondering, needing, fearing. All children know this, and in Beejum they greet these inner selves, look them over, and come to see them in others. I read the book with my youngest son -- he a page, me a page -- and the cahoots between us has never really left. In an age of hurried children of all ages, where movies are breathless blockbusters and bestsellers genre, where company is the TV show in pieces trying to fit itself between the long commercials, the Beejum Book is the rare moment of the inner voice. Time and differences fall away, and in your loneliness, you remember you're never alone. Saying that here, typing it out in our cynical world, it sounds trite, loses its meaning. But what is more important to say and share with each other as we journey through life? Alice O. Howell says the important things in a way that we can all hear them. She turns the difficult over playfully, joyfully, without fear; she probes it, puts it on steamships and trains, wonders at all its facets, dresses it in flop ears, thumps its tail. She takes your child-hand in her child-hand to see all things anew -- as "truly limitless in extent and of incalculable age."

1 out of 5 stars All Talk, No Action.......2005-02-21

This is probably the worst children's book I have ever read, and as an elementary school teacher, I have read more than my share of children's books. There isn't any plot to speak of, and most of the book consists of cutsey characters delivering long new-agey monologues. It is my understanding that the secret to writing good fiction is "show, don't tell"; in other words, your narrative should make clear the points you are trying to make without your explicitly stating them. This book violates that rule on every single page, with excruciatingly boring results.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest books I read so far at age 8.5!.......2003-03-18

This amazing book will capture imagination of readers of all ages, said my mom. At first, I did not understand what a Beejum was, but as I read on, I not only felt like a part of their world, but also learnt some helpful lessons. Like being an "inside" and "outside" person and having "little me" and "big you". I recommend this book to everybody who wants to stretch their immagination, learn something about themselves and laugh a lot ( and cry a little). I will have a Beejum party with my friends. Thank you, Mrs. Howell!

My wife and I listened to the Beejum Book on tape on a recent car trip. We wondered who did the terrific reading. Then, when we re-wound the tape, we found it was the author. Made us wish we'd had books on tape when we were younger.

      Book Description

Without knowing it, Americans eat genetically modified (GM) food everyday. While the food and chemical industries claim that GMO food is safe, a considerable amount of evidence shows otherwise. In Seeds of Deception, Jeffrey Smith, a former executive with the leading independent laboratory testing for GM presence in foods, documents these serious health dangers and explains how corporate influence and government collusion have been used to cover them up. The stories Smith presents read like a mystery novel. Scientists are offered bribes or threatened; evidence is stolen; data withheld or distorted. Government scientists who complain are stripped of responsibilities or fired. The FDA even withheld information from congress after a GM food supplement killed nearly a hundred people and permanently disabled thousands. While Smith was employed by the laboratory he was not allowed to speak on the health dangers or the cover-up. No longer bound by this agreement, Smith now reveals what he knows in this groundbreaking exposé. Today, food companies sell GM foods that have not undergone safety studies. FDA scientists opposed this, but White House and industry pressure prevailed and the agency's final policy--co-authored by a former Monsanto attorney--denied the risks. The scientists' concerns were made public only after a lawsuit forced the agency to turn over internal documents. Dan Glickman, former Secretary of Agriculture, describes the government's pro-biotech mindset: "You felt like you were almost an alien, disloyal, by trying to present an open-minded view. . . . So I pretty much spouted the rhetoric. . . . It was written into my speeches." In Seeds of Deception Smith offers easy-to-understand descriptions of genetic engineering and explains why it can result in serious health problems. This well-documented, pivotal work will show you how to protect yourself and your family.

5 out of 5 stars A good reason to eat organic and avoid processed foods.......2007-09-18

Jeffrey Smith has done an excellent job in exposing the truth about genetically modified foods. Seeds of Deception is easily understandable, compelling and well documented. It's disheartening that the people in control of the food supply are so focused on their bottom line and don't seem to care about the long-term health and safety effects of introducing foreign genes into the food supply. Genetically engineered ingredients are already in foods on the grocery store shelves right now. If you care about your health, you need to read this book, avoid processed foods and buy organic.

      5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-06-22

About three years ago I saw a "debate" about genetically modified food on public television. The panel had two people who were gung ho in favor of GMO food, and one who was on the fence about it, an appalling lack of balance. Just yesterday I was telling someone that, sadly, I no longer eat Hersheys because they've started using genetically modified ingredients, and he replied "what's that?" The lack of news or discussion of this issue in the past decade has left most people completely in the dark about what's going on. This book could save the planet if enough people read it. We are our genes. Humans, animals and plants have survived by our genetic makeup. Our relationships with plants and animals is based on our genetics and theirs. The unadvertised, sadly un-discussed mutilation of the genetic heritage of our natural world is a planetary suicide that has just begun. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to understand the GMO movement, its history, its motivations, its scandals and its dangers.

5 out of 5 stars If you think GM foods are safe, think again........2007-04-12

I have not tracked the genetically engineered food issue carefully, having only seen mainstream media reporting.

BEFORE I started reading this book, I thought that:

      1. The genetic engineering technique is very precise and duplicatable, inserting single genes into a plant's DNA that do a precise job.

      2. Genetically modified (GM) food is essentialy the same as the non-GM counterpart.

      3. There are few if any known serious health risks from eating most GM food

      4. GM practices can reduce pesticide use because the plant has its own pesticide. This is an environmental benefit.

      5. GM food can increase yields, given the same amount of land for growing - which has been a great benefit in some third world countries.

      6. There are considerable environmental risks that have probably not been ade1quately studied. For example, monarch butterflies were being harmed in GM fields.

Overall I felt that the issue was not very clear cut, there were great advantages, but caution is also advised.

AFTER I read this book, I learned that:
      1. The GM technique is extremely imprecise, it is like shooting a shotgun of genes at a bunch of DNA strands, and hoping a few stick. Furthermore, the surrounding genes suffer considerable collateral damage that is impossible to predict the effects of.

      2. This collateral damage results in GM food often being very different from the non-GM version, especially in increase of toxins and allergens.

      3. There are a number of well documented cases of people getting very sick, and some cases dying from these toxins and allergens.
Yet, the FDA and GM biotech industry and mainstream media continues to say that there is little evidence of health risk.

      4. One of the most pervasive GM foods is Monsanto's Ready Roundup soy bean. It is specifically designed to be resistant to Monsanto's brand of pesticide. This results in MORE of that pesticide being used.

      5. The argument about increased yields to save the planet is often used as a last resort when you point out the truth about GM being an imprecise technique, and that there are serious health risks. It is a way of bringing in a moral dimension that most people will buy. Yet, the planet already has much more food than it needs to feed everyone. This is not the reason for GM foods. Profit is.

      6. The environmental risks may be many and unstudied, to be sure. Much more shocking is that there are hardly any careful studies demonstrating that GM food is safe. Basically, scientificaly weak arguments are use to argue that there is no reason to conduct such studies.

This is barely scratching the surface, this book is extremely well written and documented. It tells a sobering story of:
      * Corporate greed,

      * Rampant conflict of interest with industry being in bed with the FDA, for example:
      - Scientists warnings are routinely ignored
      - Monsanto officials come to work at the FDA to make policy, then return to Monsanto
      - The doctoring of information is much like what the current Bush adminstration has done with scentific reports about global warming.

      * Most funding for research in GM comes from industry.

      * People are afraid to do research that might discover inconvenient truths about the safety of GM foods - because they are bullied, threatened and can lose their careers.

      * Massive media manipulation filters out virtually all anti-GM stories; books have gone unpublished for fear of lawsuits by pro-GM companies

      * Pro-biotech companies and the FDA itself have ample evidence of safety concerns, and they consistently lie about it. It reminds me of the tobacco situation.

Some may complain that this book does not present a balanced view. You be the judge. And anyway, even if it is one one-sided, its about that that this side was aired.

But don't take it from me, or from the author. Read the book, check the references, and reach your own conclusions. Even if only a few things in this book are true, it has major consequences.

I recommend that anyone who cares about their health, and their future read this book right away!!! You are not going to find out about this information from the mainstream media.

5 out of 5 stars No one is harder to teach..........2007-03-29

...than someone whose job depends on not understanding what you're trying to tell them!

Interesting how the only country in the world selling this Frankenfood is the one sufficiently industrialised (that there could be a market for something other than "just plant this seed and eat what grows out of it"), which also happens to have a government wholly bought and paid for by the megacorporations pushing this junk. In the rest of the developed world--where governments (and their regulations) are at least somewhat responnsive to the people and not just their corporate masters--no one will touch the stuff. They won't pay a penny for it. They're literally fighting to keep it fron contaminating their food supply.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. And yes, what is the "balanced" view? OK, in this chapter we take a look at the benefits of putting untested weird gene-tweaked crap into your body and the biosphere...

      5 out of 5 stars What americans don't know..........2007-02-17

...is that biotech companies are stealing your right to decide what you want to eat!
This book reviews - among other subjects - how a handful of multibillion companies are mixing their genetically modified ingredients into the food you and your children eat - without your knowledge. And worse: aided and abetted by the FDA.
If you care about your consumer rights, this book is an eye-opener. In this case the old saying that "what you don't know can never hurt you" proves absolutely wrong.
People in the EU have already given GMO foods the bashing they deserve. But not people in the US. Want to know why? The info is in this book.

From Hollywood to South Beach, the latest craze in the diet world is low-carbohydrate, high-protein meals. However, until now, low-carb cookbooks have been decidedly lowbrow, more concerned with prepared ingredients and overly simplistic recipes than with flavor or presentation. In THE LOW-CARB GOURMET, Brigit Binns proves that it's possible to follow a low-carb regime and still eat well—in fact, exceedingly well. With 70 recipes for sophisticated yet approachable dishes like Gratin-Style Spinach and Aged-White Cheddar Soufflé, Hazelnut-Crusted Freshwater Trout with Preserved Lemon Relish, and Star Anise Flan with Blackberries, THE LOW-CARB GOURMET takes low-carb eating beyond the hamburger sans bun and explains how to maintain a healthy, gourmet lifestyle that will leave you looking and feeling great. Thank you Brigit for this great book and the preface that makes it all more personal!!
Have to change a few ingredients as they are hard to find in the UK but the recipes work out and are SO flavoursome. I am looking at the pounds fall away yet enjoying a full plate of tasty morsels.
Well done, pleased to have caught up with you even though its via your book - who would have known it when you were here as one of us 'a City Bankers Wife' back in the 80's!!!

5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite.......2005-02-24

This is one of the best cookbooks I've bought in a long time, and I buy a lot of cookbooks. I made the Haricots Frites with Tarragon Sauce for a small cocktail party I had recently, and everyone raved. It was great to be able to tell my guests that they shouldn't feel guilty because these frites are low-carb! I also just tried the Seared Scallops with Cauliflower Florets, since scallops are in season, and the recipe was flawless. Whether or not you intentionally eat low-carb, these recipes are great!

5 out of 5 stars The best Low carb book .......2005-02-15

I found this book great because I love food and don't want to feel deprived in this style of eating.
The Burrata and Seared Fig Salad is fantastic and the Deep-fried Egg Frise Salad is out of this world.
Do your self a favor. Get it and Cook.

        5 out of 5 stars Don't miss it! Wow!.......2005-01-18

Extraordinary recipes that taste as great as they look! Makes me forget that I am on a diet.

        Book Description

A comprehensive, illustrated and authoritative guide.

Keeping koi is one of the pinnacles of the fishkeeper's art. These magnificent and often expensive fish have inspired a fanatical following, with collectors prepared to devote a lot of time and resources to creating a flourishing koi pond.

One of the top priorities for koi keepers is coping with fish that become ill. Left untreated, many fish suffer and die.

Manual of Koi Health offers practical advice about disease diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The book is written by two experienced koi professionals and internationally recognized experts. It includes a complete listing of all common koi diseases and how to treat them.

Written for non-technical readers, it explains treatments for:

Preventative measures are also explained. Poor water quality is the most prevalent cause of disease in koi. Water testing and the best way to maintain healthy water conditions are covered in detail.

The book is profusely illustrated with color photographs, and step-by-step instructions provide easy-to-follow directions for a wide range of procedures such as how to handle, anaesthetize and take samples from koi.

Manual of Koi Health is a vital reference for every koi keeper.

The book was well thought out as far as content. The author spoke to the reader taking into account that the reader might be a novice koi keeper

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Koi Reference.......2004-12-07

This is a fantastic book for anyone needing tips on keeping the environment their koi live in heathy and free of disease. This book is very easy to understand and has many photos to help you better understand what you are reading. Everything is well photographed with excellent instruction on identifying, prevention and the treatment of diseases. When the photography was not good enough, then wonderful and highly detailed illustrations were used.
The text is straight forward with little jargon so that it is easy to understand for even a non-fish person like me. This is a great book for anyone interested in going to the next level with their pond.

Acclaimed since its first appearance as the most practical guide to plant tissue culture and widely adopted as a textbook, this standard work is now even better. This expanded edition introduces new developments in biotechnology, such as genetic engineering and cell culture. It provides detailed recipes for propagating plants from more than 30 families. It explains clearly how to set up a propagating laboratory, from a hobbyist's kitchen to an elaborate commercial enterprise.

Well laid out, easy to understand for a non-technical person like myself. You do not need a doctorate to use this book successfully.A good basic book for micropropagation.

            5 out of 5 stars Introduction.......2007-01-11

I liked the book and I have read most of it twice, The book starts with the basics and and then moves on to the very heart of micropropagation, where it gets hard for me to understand. but if you want to learn about this subject you should get it.

            4 out of 5 stars Soon.......2006-09-18

Certainly one of the better books I have read on this subject. Very descriptive and scientific. One downfall to the book and to the whole idea of tissue culture is the massive costs of lab equipment and growing media. Very well written book though, and a good starter book.

4 out of 5 stars The Best curently available.......2000-05-31

This book contains everything that you need to know to start cloneing plants. Some of the material is geared more towards comericial operations but there is a lot for the hobbiest too. I thought that it could have been organized a little better. The authors talk about equipment and media before they go through the cloning process. Parts of it will be boring unless you are planing to actually culture plants. For example there are several step by step lists on how to preform transfers etc.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the novice........2000-04-27

For those just starting out, this is as good as it gets. Good for the beginner, but contains information useful to the more experienced. If you get hooked on this hobby, it shows how to set up your own lab without breaking the bank. The bibliography and list of supply sources will let you go as far as you want.

There are many books on typography and design. This is one of the better, if not the best, that I have read. It is readable as well as informative and comprehensive. Each topic is presented on a two-page spread with visual examples. A good book for the beginner and a good reference for those with more experience who are looking for a competent addition to their library.
