Book Description
From
The Edge of Justice to
Crossing the Line, Clinton McKinzie has captivated readers with thrillers that combine heart-pounding action with searing human drama–and feature a truly unforgettable hero, Special Agent Antonio Burns. Now McKinzie delivers a new novel filled with his trademarks–the thrill of danger, the clash between the law and the lawless, and the struggles of a family bound by love, loyalty, and a hunger for adventure. Here McKinzie takes us to a stark Wyoming landscape, where one tragic moment plunges Antonio Burns into a whirlpool of hate, violence, and revenge.
Badwater
Antonio Burns is at a crossroads–he rarely sees his six-month-old daughter, and his career has spiraled downward from hotshot golden boy to nearly having his badge confiscated. And things are about to get even worse. When a ten-year-old boy dies in a drowning incident in Badwater, Wyoming, the townspeople want the tourist they feel is responsible convicted of murder. In an already explosive case, Burns has been forced into working for the prosecution–and when a media-hungry celebrity lawyer takes over the defense, justice turns into a charade.
Clinging to his sanity by climbing the crags and caverns of a local canyon, recovering from the near death of his daredevil brother and his breakup with the mother of his child, Antonio tries to turn his back on this situation. But he can’t. He finds one crucial piece of evidence, makes one mistake with a woman, and then turns to his brother, Roberto, for help. Soon he’s all the way in–no matter what the cost to his career, his life, or to the people who still count him as one of their own.…
The spellbinding story of a cop drawn to danger, a community steeped in hatred, and an explosive mix of opportunists, idealists, and a few very bad men,
Badwater is a taut, thunderous novel–and Clinton McKinzie at his electrifying best.

good like the others.......2006-11-03
this book is as good as the others ! I highly recommend it !
Antonio's Trials.......2006-08-23
Once again Antonio Burns has found a way to the dark side, where rules, procedures and politics clash with the right thing to do. And once again, Antonio is ready to risk it all, slide down that rope of despair as his reputation, job and liberty are threatened, all because he's doing the right thing. Poor guy, just can't get a break.
Antonio's not one to mess with, especially when he feels he's on a mission. He meets his challenges head-on: "QuickDraw" fits him.
But everything has turned to dust in Antonio's life: his brother's a cripple; he's lost the respect of his mentor and boss; he's being investigated by the DEA for a drug lord's disappearance in Mexico; his fiance's left him; his new baby cries when he visits, and his latest love has betrayed him.
Poor guy just can't get a break.
And now he's got steroid junkies and tweakers on his trail, and an innocent kid is being railroaded to a life term. Worse yet, Antonio's about to be fired.
So why not get away from it all? Go scale an impossible mountain. Commit suicide by rock. Rip yourself to shreds on outcroppings or sling yourself into granite. Or gaze at the Wyoming sky.
And then make things right...
Clinton McKinzie has scored again with this, his fifth Antonio Burns story. Antonio may be out of work and lacking friends, but he's still my guy. Bravo! Can't wait for the next adventure.
Another excellent book from McKinzie.......2006-08-20
The main character is a very conflicted Wyoming state drug enforcement officer, trying to stay out of trouble, but always being in the middle of the turmoil. Climbing is his release but also an integral part of the story line. The books are well written with interesting plot twists, and he writes about climbing so well that you are with him on every pitch.
great thriller but not up to the excellent standards of Mckinzie.......2005-09-13
The characters are in form, the plot is credible but the ending and the survival of the brother leave the story below his top draw standard. Better than most but not what Mckinzie has shown himself capable of.
Badwater.......2005-08-03
Very interesting, fast paced, and full of colorful characters.
Plot moves and changes along with characters!!! I highly
recommend this and Mckinzie's other books as well.

Enjoyable little fantasy world.......2006-09-02
I picked this up on a clearance table at B&N a few years ago, and I've pulled it off the shelf at least once every year since then to read it again. I haven't read any of the author's other works, and indeed I find Tolkien closer to my worldview than this brief tast of Ms Bradley's sub-creation. However, I greatly enjoy this little field trip into a well-detailed fantasy world. She explains just enough for someone who doesn't know all the background of her work to follow along, and makes it all seem so natural. (And the plot's pretty good, too!) If you find it at a yard sale or thrift shop, pick it up to enjoy on a rainy Saturday morning. 4.5/5
A bit of a disappointment.......2006-09-02
This should have been published with another story or two (there are some uncollected Lythande stories, maybe the administrators of her estate should look into a complete Lythande collection, including the Thieve's World stories). It's just a novelette - really a long short story.
As a story of Lythande, it is thin and lacks the complexity of the other stories. It was good to see Beeauty and Tashgan again. I'm glad to add it to my collection of MZB.
A nice little treat of Marion Zimmer Bradley!.......2004-03-28
Being a huge MZB fan and a lover of her "Mists of Avalon" series, I bought this lovely little book simply because it was Marion Zimmer Bradley.
If you are looking for a complex, substantial novel, this book may not be for you. It is after all, a short story, revisiting Lythande the sorcerer/magician, and not a huge novel in and of itself.
This novel is a really fun read, because it gives the reader a glimpse of Marion Zimmer Bradley's world, but does so with a bit of humor. "Gratitude of Kings" is full of symbolism, and I feel that the book's message is very clear.
This is simply a delightful, "not too deep" novel, and for those unaccustomed to MZB's work, a quick look at her ability to make fantasy completely believable, and another of her fine offerings which focus around the power of women, whatever form that power may take!
Lythande in a children's book.......1999-09-10
...is my impression of this fairy tale like story. The female magician is conjuring her way in the usual charming wit and manners through one of her many old friend's (in no way surprising after a few centuries of lifetime) wedding ceremony in a medieval setting. With a cheerful smile on my face, I finished reading the little book with the pretty cover (hardcover, therefore its price). Just too short. I'd recomend it as a gift to casual readers or as a children's book for second grade. Isn't there someone you've always wanted to turn onto MZB?
A Little Bit of Fluff.......1998-07-01
While the story about Lythande was fairly interesting, I found myself asking at the end, "So, what was the point?" The book reads more like a short story. While somewhat entertaining, it just didn't seem to have enough plot to it to warrant making a whole book from it. I can understand printing it as a selection in an anthology, but not in this format. I have thoroughly enjoyed Bradley's wonderful Darkover series but this just falls short of the quality I expect of her. I believe this book is simply a way to make money off Bradley's name.

Customer Reviews:
Too Hippie New Age for Me.......2007-08-11
I beleive that reflexology works, but this book is a little too far out there. Heavily focused on "balancing" and "focusing" and eastern practices. The socks are a fun little item. A chart of the pressure points would have been appreciated.
Good - howver elementary.......2006-08-22
Perhaps a good book however was too elementary for the therapist
Average infomation content. Excellent Visual Aids.......2006-02-27
This book was average on the subject matter. The pair of socks that had a diagnostic map located on the bottom of the feet was what attracted me to the book. However, it was not to the scale of my feet. Rather, it fit the scale of the book..
My favorite books on reflexology is out of print and is called "The Story the Feet Can Tell"
Informational but not very practical.......2005-03-10
This book is good if you a looking for general explanation of the history of reflexology and the ways it can help to improve and maintain your health. However, there is appoloing lack of visual presentations to help you actually do it. I was very disappointing because I ordered this book as the first page seemed to promise exactly that - the book with lots of visuals aids. If you are like me and would like something very practical and visual do not waste your money. Except if you would like to receive free reflexology socks, which are excellent idea.
not enough.......2005-02-03
I feel there isnt enough info you can look at that sells the book. show a picture, get the person to want to buy the book. need pictures, to show all that is in the index.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read, Classic Recipes, Great Reference. Must Buy!.......2005-02-17
`North Atlantic Seafood' and `Mediterranean Seafood', both by noted culinary writer Alan Davidson, the author of `The Oxford Companion to Food' are reference books which a serious cook must have in their library where time is spent deciding on what to eat rather than time spend actually cooking. These books belong to a rare breed of books in English such as Elizabeth Schneider's `Vegetables from Amaranth to Zucchini' or `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients' which thoroughly cover a broad single subject or the `Larousse Gastronomique' which gives an overview of virtually every culinary subject, at least from the point of view of French cuisine.
Both books are organized in the same way that gives primacy to information on the aquatic species and secondary coverage of recipes.
Biological family, genus, and species organize the first part on the catalog of species in order that the biological similarity of the fishes is clearly shown. Each article gives the most common English name, the two part Latin scientific name, the scientist who assigned this name (most commonly the great inventor of biological Taxonomy, Linnaeus), the biological family name, and the common name of the fish in virtually every language of the major fishing nationality bordering the relevant body of water. The North Atlantic species, for example, are named in Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, German, Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and others such as Gaelic (Irish). The Mediterranean species' names are given in French, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Tunisian, Turkish, and others such as Bulgarian, Romanian, and Russian if, for example, the species is most commonly found in the Black Sea, which is included in the coverage of the Mediterranean. These names in themselves are entertaining to the linguistically inclined, as it is interesting to see the similarities and differences from country to country. For example, even though the Turks came to Asia Minor from central Asia, most of their names for fishes are very similar to the Greek name, making a lot of sense, as a traveling people is likely to name things new to them based on the names given by the indigenous population. The articles on every species also have a highly detailed black and white drawing of each animal. The great value to these is that it makes comparing the appearance of different fishes very easy, as every species is depicted in a similar style. It is too bad they could not be depicted to scale, but this would have had the sturgeon filling two pages while the anchovies would be the size of a period. Instead, the remarks on each fish give the average market length and a description of the typical color and markings.
The catalog entry also gives a paragraph or two on cuisine, which is a discussion of the culinary desirability of the species and typical ways in which the animal is prepared. For most fish, this includes methods by which the fish is butchered. The catalog entries also include a list of recipes and page numbers for these recipes in the second major section of the book.
The second major section divides recipes by country. The Mediterranean volume has chapters of recipes from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Black Sea, and Northern Africa. The North Atlantic volume has recipes from Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Canada, the United States, Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales. France merits two sections, covering the southwest and the northwest. The US merits four sections, covering New England, the Middle Atlantic States, the Chesapeake, and the Carolinas and Georgia.
Other books, such as `Fish' by Shirley King seems to have copied this scheme, but seems to be much less successful in that not enough valuable information is packed into the catalogue to make it interesting enough reading to outweigh the annoyance of doing a two step search for a recipe on haddock, for example. The other side of the coin is that if you live in Maryland, you are much more likely to be interested in recipes from the Chesapeake than in recipes from Maine.
One is tempted to expect these recipes to be very generic and not as interesting as those you may find in books of `haute cuisine' from a fish specialist such as Eric Rippert. This is partially true. Davidson is less the great cook than he is a great writer on food. This means that while his recipes may come from common sources, he gives us much more information on the background of the recipes than the chef may do. Two perfect examples of this case are the recipes for bouillabaisse (French fish stew) and Maryland crab cakes. Davidson confesses to giving us something simpler than the `de luxe version', yet this simple treatment is entirely appropriate to the simple origins of the dish, before the gourmets got their hands on it. Similarly, the crab cake recipe has very few ingredients, mostly just crabmeat, seasonings, breadcrumbs, and enough egg to hold it all together.
The supplementary information tells much about the fish cuisine of both regions. The most interesting information is on the fact that while the Mediterranean is very shallow, it has relatively little continental shelf while the North Sea is practically all shelf, suitable to the spawning of young fish in shallow water. This does much to explain the popularity of the North Atlantic cod in peninsular Italy, virtually surrounded by water.
The bibliography shows that the author has based most of his material on local sources in native languages such as Polish, Turkish, and Portuguese. This may only help the multilingual scholar, but then it is the rare English culinary work that does this. One of the greatest things about these volumes is that all of this great material is available in trade paperbacks, which list for no more than $25.
These are must have books for devoted foodies!
Wonderful cookbook and reference.......2000-08-06
All the commonly-eaten fish and shellfish of the North Atlantic are covered in this wonderful reference and cookbook. As in his Mediterranean Seafood, each animal's entry includes an old engraving (better than a photo for identification -- except for color), its scientific and common names in various languages, a description of the animals habit's and culinary qualities, and a reference to recipes.
Recipes are organized by country, and are well chosen and edited. The only criticism I might offer is that it is hard to find recipes by type. That is, it's very easy to find recipes for mackerel or recipes from Portugal, but it's hard to find all the baked-fish recipes suitable for a dark-fleshed fish.
A great book like this should never be out of print!
A compendium of marine life, and how to cook it........1997-05-07
An unusual format for a cookery book, or for a
catalog of marine life. In fact, it's both -
the first half of the book is a catalog of marine
species arranged by family (flatfish, molluscs,
etc.), while the second half is a catalog of
recipes for them, grouped by country of origin.
Although ostensibly North Atlantic in scope, the
tome omits some species which occur also in the
Mediterranean (the reader is referred to the
author's book covering that sea's life and
cuisine). However, Baltic Sea species are
included, although most of them are actually
freshwater types, due to the low salinity of the
Baltic.
Common names for most species are supplied in
several languages, according to the distribution
of the creatures. Differences in regional naming
are also noted. Fine sketches of each subject are
accompanied by notes on distribution, habitat,
etc., and pointers to appropriate recipes.
In the cookery section, there are no sketches, but
many of the recipes are accompanied by anecdotes
from the author's many travels. The instructions
are brief, but complete enough for successful and
tasty dining. In arranging dishes by geography,
each nation is represented only by a fraction of
its seafood, and some could easily be ascribed to
several countries.
In summary, a very good book (if you can find it).
It would be enhanced by use of colour instead of
of black and white pictures, and addition of some
pictures in the recipes section.
Book Description
Thousands of equestrians have taken to the trail for fun and recreation. Both beginners and advanced riders will find this book extremely useful. Topics include safety, troubleshooting, obstacles such as weather and emergencies, dealing with the young, old and problem horse, conquering the horse's fear of streams, bridges, bicycles and more.
Customer Reviews:
Trail Triumphs and Troubles.......2006-04-05
This is a wonderful resource for both the experienced and the novice trail rider. Those of us who are fans of Ms. Daly's have long-awaited this book. Ms. Daly has written a monthly trail riding newsletter for some time. The book reflects her easy-to-read, conversational style and contains so many great stories. Ms. Daly and her friends have done it all!
The first part of the book emphasizes the fun and challenges of trail riding. Innumerable trail pointers and etiquette tips are given: avoid running up behind another rider; cross streets in groups (not single file); hold gates up for other horses, but don't hold branches for other horses, etc. She describes common and uncommon obstacles and how to both prepare for them in advance of the ride and also how to handle them during the ride. Ms. Daly further describes safe conditioning for the trail horse, an important aspect of trail riding that is too often neglected.
In the second half of the book, Ms. Daly describes how to train horses for safe trail riding. She addresses both the young or inexperienced horse as well as the horse who has developed some nasty vices such as bucking, bolting, spooking, barn souring, or rearing. These chapters could be very useful to the rider/horse who has performed mostly in the arena and would like to try the great outdoors. If a chapter doesn't apply to your horse today, it will probably apply to a friend's. This is a book to be read and re-read--and enjoyed!

Customer Reviews:
Great gift for the aficionado.......2000-05-27
This is a good bible for the Midwinter enthusiast. My in-laws have been collecting the Stonehenge Midwinter patterns for years without a reference guide. They'll be thrilled as I was with the chronological history of this company and the pottery they created. Great color photos.
Excellent Identification Guide!.......2000-01-07
This book is a wonderful reference volume for the lover of mid 20th Century design, and invaluable for the Midwinter enthusiast! The colour photos are exceptional and the patterns are also explicitly described in chronological order. If you even have a passing interest in 50's-60's design, this would be a wonderful addition to your reference library.
buy 2 copies - one for reference and one for keeps........1999-05-15
If you are crazy about Midwinter pottery and want to know pretty much all there is to know about it's production processes, the designers and their designs then this is the book for you. If you are interested in the designs of the 1950s and 60's it will also provide a valuable reference tool. There are plenty of colour pictures to help with identification of different patterns whilst out at boot sales in search of treasure (Becoming increasingly rare to find at reasonable prices now). Read the book but leave the china for me.

Customer Reviews:
A reasonably useful book.......2000-04-12
If you are learning how to use plain TeX, this is a pretty good book. It teaches you the basics quickly and quite well, but it fails as far as more refined uses are concerned. The more difficult commands, especially related to vertical and horizontal glueing are not properly explained, and the appendix about LaTeX is altogether pretty useless. Still, since experimentation is the name of the game in TeX, you might as well have this book on your shelf rather than some other, especially if you would rather dispose with cute drawings and other nonsense you do find in other TeX user manuals.
