Not what I was expecting........2007-01-15

I was quite excited to read this book, as the illustration of the Persian Cavalry on the cover impressed me greatly. The author seems to have a great knowledge and grasp of the Persian wars, he just doesn't use it to his potential extent.

For one thing, the reconstructions of the Greek soldiers are absolutely ridiculous. I've studied Greek armour for much of my life, and I couldn't even identify many of his hoplite illustrations as even being Greek. To make matters worse, there are zero images of vase paintings or statues within the pages of the book that even suggest the armour he illustrates ever existed, which made me think twice about purchasing this book.

His Persians, while an improvement, still seem a little awkward. A good example is that the Immortals are shown without scaled armour, whereas Herodotus confirmed that they wore it in battle. The art isn't all disappointing though, there are some rather good images of Greek and Persian light infantry, as well as excellent representations of Arabian camelry and a Phrygian axeman.

The text, while certainly easy reading, does never go indepth on the armour and arms it should be about, and instead directly concentrates on the events of Persian and Greek conflict - something that the buyer should presumably already know much about. Certainly, the writing would be all fine and well for someone new on the topic, but with the accompanying illustrations of Cassin-Scott's unbelievably strange soldiers, it just isn't worth it.

Not recomended.......2002-01-10

The book covers two peoples (the persians and greeks)and a period (almost 200 years) where the changes in warfare, not to say in batlle dress, are very extensive. So it is highly superficial on both.
There are much better color plates and information in other Men-at-Arms titles. Look for them, this one is barelly a start.
Finally, there is no evidences, as has been written in books of this same series, that Spartans have ever used the composit body armour as showed in the book.

Good book, OK pictures.......2000-04-10

This book had good information on the Greek and Persian wars. You can find plenty of books on Greeks or Persia, but not ones devoted to the wars between the two. They have pretty good pictures for the Greeks army, but the Persian pictures are not very good, I've seen better uniforms for them that arn't in the book. All the pictures are just not too great. So all in all, if you are some what interested in the book, get it.

Encouraging younger students to study the history of Modern Times.......2006-05-17

When you see the cover of this Journey Through History volume is about "Modern Times," but shows a couple of people dressed in what you would think of as clothing from the period of the American Revolution, you might do a double-take. But for Gloria & Oriol Verges "Modern Times" means the 17th and 18th centuries. The series consists of six books written for young readers that are designed to encourage their interest in the study of history. Originally published in Spain ("Edad antigua"), these books do provide a slightly different perspective on the past that you get from American historians. "Modern Times" is the fifth volume, following "Prehistory to Egypt," "The Greek and Roman Eras," "The Middle Ages," and the "Renaissance." What the Verges do is to follow groups of children during a specific period as a way of touching on topics of historical interest and significance.

So it is that we have a couple of young children growing up in France, Holland, England, America, and Spain (France gets the most mention). The book starts off with the notion of absolute monarchies and ends with the Industrial Revolution, so it only touches on the radical transformation of societies during these two centuries. Other points covered are Baroque art and music, the rise of the European bourgeoisie (without using the word "bourgeoisie"), the new theories of French philosophers, the birth of North America, daily life in the 18th century, the great political change in France, and the applications of the steam engine, which led to the Industrial Revolution.

The focus on these books is more on defining elements of the culture and reinforcing those, than providing lots of details, so the value here is as supplemental volumes to your main classroom history textbook. If anything, this particular volume keeps things rather too general in the main text, which makes it the weakest one I have read to date. Compare the two-page spreads in the book with the elements covered in the guide for parents and teachers in the back, and you will learn more there because there are more specific discussions of things like Baroque music. The final volume in the Journey Through History series is devoted to "The Contemporary Age." All six of the books are written by the Verges, with Carme Peris illustrating the even numbered books, and Maria Rius providing the art for the odd numbered volumes, including this one.

Timmerman is the "preacher of hate.".......2007-07-24

It's hard to miss how Timmerman is serving powerful interests by going after a very effective advocate for all working class people, not just African Americans. I hear Jesse Jackson's excellent radio show (Keep Hope Alive Radio) each weekend, and he is doing even more good work than most people could imagine. Jackson is there on picket lines when people are striking for better wages, or better working conditions. He is there when it comes to unjust sentencing regarding the death penalty, or the harsh penalties for drugs that pharmaceutical companies don't have a patent on. Jesse was there in Libya negotiating the release of a U.S. air force pilot who was being held there. Jesse is going all around the world promoting mutual respect and multicultural celebrations.
And the list of Jackson's positive contributions goes on and on.
What has Timmerman done with his life? Well, he has been paid to be a character assassin of the right-wing elite. Sometimes he'll go after individuals, sometimes he'll go after entire groups of people - like Muslim imams.
I'm sure it pays well to protect multi-billion dollar corporations from the "shakedowns" of activists like Jackson.
In an earlier period, America's right-wing would've killed Jackson, but they try to avoid creating martyrs, so they go with smear campaigns instead. Other members of the media lynch mob give Timmerman all kinds of publicity on America's airwaves, people like Sean Hannity and Limbaugh who also get paid to bear false witness in the interests of Big Business which hates activists, environmentalists, feminists, labor advocates, and anyone else who may reveal the insatiable greed of the corporate matrix.

How sad that so many fall for it; or, so many choose to be deceived by shameless preachers of hate like Timmerman.

I've always known that Jesse Jackson was an opportunist and a liar. Now
I see him as much more than that! He is a danger to our Country and our way of life, and should be put UNDER the jail! The poor and uneducated who listen to him don't have a prayer of getting out of poverty until this man is off the scene. Let's hope he'll take to his rocking chair soon.

I don't get it.....bright and promising young men get sent to prison for having a marajuana cigarette .....and a man like Jesse remains free! Go figure!! He was called a 'poverty pimp' and a 'race baiter' by acquaintances in the book. I couldn't agree more. It literally makes me sick to see him BLAME instead of TEACH. And if I see him 'marching' for anything at all, I become suspicious and head the other way. How sad that he takes advantage of the poorest and least educated among us.

Thanks so much for this book about Jesse Jackson. Jesse Jackson is for himself. He has exploited Black people and used them for his own good. Where ever there is a cause he's present. Not so much for the sake of those involved, but more or less for his own benefit. It's ashame that he has to speak for the common good of man for a fee. Before he speaks he wants to come to a payment agreement. He uses Black people. A Black problem is his gain. Black people please get hip. Jesse Jackson is a pimp in the worse way. He pimps and profits from Black problems.

What if he had won the presidential election? You talking about a mess. He would have sold the country out. Jesse came to the town that I live in to help a candidate get elected. He tried to steal the spotlight. Jesse Jackson out talked and over talked the person running for election. He uses every chance that he can get to promote Jesse Jackson.

Bush Buster.......2007-03-13

I will readily admit that I am no fan of Bush. In fact, the local democrats in my area refer to him as "Dumbya" and the Commander in Thief, sobriquets I feel he has truly earned. There are, as another reviewer on the US Amazon boards pointed out many reasons to hate and fear this "incompetent buffoon of a president," which is a chillingly apt description of Dumbya. One almost wishes he was a demagogue because one has to have some intelligence to be a demagogue.

Clint Willis has written some excellent, trenchant essays about the Commander in Thief as have other notable and distinguished authors such as Molly Ivins, Greg Palast, Michael Moore, Paul Krugman and Joe Conanson. These authors write with brilliant detail, offering levity to balance out the dire situations this president has caused. Dumbya's tenure in office is of the emperor's new clothes genre and it is long past time others admitted that the emperor is naked! Naked!

It is galling and appalling to hear the malapropisms directly from this president. It is even more alarming and horrifying to see his glaring misdeeds and atrocious administration replete with scandals. This book pulls the news pundits' reports on Dumbya and his atrocious administration and the reasons for why so many view it this way. For those who support Bush, this book will certainly provide input from a different perspective.

Amazingly detailed prints of workshops in 18th century France: white and wet cooper,case maker, cobbler's last maker, packing case maker, horn worker. The tools are named and drawn with precision -very fine illustrations. I experienced many 'AHA..' moments whilst studying this book. A treasure.

This is an excellent comprehensive guide to canine massage. Topics listed in the table of contents are addressed in depth. Photos help to demonstrate the massage techniques described.
Mr. Hourdebaigt also has made a 90 min. video to complement this text. I haven't seen it but I am planning on ordering it. If the video is anywhere near as good as the book, it will be great addition.

I highly recommend this book. My dog is involved in agility and I got this book to help with her sore muscles. It seems to really help plus it has brought us even closer. The techniques are easy to understand and well illustrated. To do a full massage takes about 30 minutes and gives your arms a great workout.

A Review of "Canine Massage- A Practical Guide".......2000-11-09

From looking through and reading a few key chapters in this book, I found it to be a helpful and enjoyable read. It gave me a nice review of important definitions, structures, and functions of the canine anatomy. I did, however, think the anatomy drawings could be a little in depth, but that was not a major issue to me. If interested in canine PT or just in giving your faithful companion a relaxing massage, this would be a great book to add to your library!
