Enjoyable!.......2005-12-03
If you are looking for a serious mystery, this is not one. However if you are looking for something light then this would be it. It was funny to have your MIL arrested, but the way the son acted like he didn't care drove me insane. The husband/wife did not have a good relationship and that bothered me too.
I did however like the PI and their adventures. I was disappointed in the battering wife theme going on too. I am not going to comment on that topic, but I am not sure it should be in a fiction book either of this sort. Especially when Mr Faulk is confronted and then they just leave her?
Again, this was an entertaining book. However, like I think most fiction isn't to be taken seriously, this sure isn't either! Have fun with it!
Chocolate Cr*p.......2004-03-27
This book was one of only four that I, in this lifetime, have thrown across the room. It was the worst kind of mystery drivel, with ridiculous and contrived detecting by amateurs and a parade of shibboleths and caricatures. The scenery comes across as written by a tourist rather than a local, and the protagonist is in no way sympathetic or likeable.
Hands down the most disturbing thing about this book, however, is the bold racism that comes across in Fairbanks' depiction of characters of any ethnicity. Foul.
How to clear her mother-in-law while eating food for her col.......2004-02-15
Carolyn and Jason Blue are off to San Francisco. Jason will be attending a conference on environmental chemistry and toxicology in their hotel the Stanford Court. Carolyn calls her mother-in-law only to get a message on her answering machine that she has been arrested for first-degree murder. At first Jason doesn't believe her, but then he hears the message too.
Since Jason is tied up in his conference, Carolyn goes to visit her. Vera Blue, her mother-in-law, tells her not to investigate. She says the police will figure out their mistake. Once Carolyn meets with Vera's lawyer Margaret Hanrahan and Inspector Harry Yu, she realizes she'd better start looking into things because no one else is. The police feel they have the murderer.
Carolyn and Jason move over to Vera's sublet so that it will be easier for Vera to get messages to them. In the process, Carolyn meets Bruno Valetti who lives on the second floor. He is totally smitten with Vera and ends up helping Carolyn with part of her investigation.
Jason contacts his dad, Vera's ex-husband, and he flies into town and hires private detective Sam Flamboise, a gay former football player turned private eye. Sam and Carolyn do a lot of the detecting together. There are so many potential suspects. They quite often end up in seedy locations. Plus Jason is not too excited to find out they have been riding on Sam's motorcycle.
This was the first book I've read in this series. I like Carolyn a lot. This was a very enjoyable story. I thought she blended some great characters together and I found the story to be quite believable.
My only frustration was with the fact that a chapter can be written from a different character's perspective. She lists at the beginning of each chapter who is speaking, but I read in small bursts and found myself forgetting who was talking. I can see in other books (I've since read another in this series) this really helps the story. I just didn't find it as helpful in this one.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more in this series.
Interesting.......2003-12-11
I never know how well I am going to like each entry in this series. They are rather inconsistent and this one falls somewhere in the middle of the rest. In this episode, Carolyn Blue and her husband are in San Francisco. Upon arriving, Carolyn dutifully calls her mother-in-law, who lives there, only to discover that she has been jailed on a murder charge.
As with her other books, Ms. Fairbanks, has written each chapter from the perspective of either Carolyn, her husband, or, in this case, the private detective hired to help find the real murderer. The chapter is then written in first person from that character's viewpoint.
There were several errors in this book. Twice was Carolyn to be written in the first person, but she was referred to in the third. Another error - the male private detective tells Carolyn that he has a relationship with a man, she comments on it, and then about 10 pages later, he tells her again and she is shocked. And, Carolyn and the detective go to a bar and order a Corona beer which is served to them on tap. Unless something has changed in the last year or so, Corona is only served in bottles.
And while this is not an error, I found it incredibly strange that Jason Blue, son of the accused murdered does absolutely nothing other than have his father hire the detective, to free his mother. If my mother were in jail, I would be doing whatever it took to get her out.
Not for sure if I will be buying the next in this series or not.
Food Columnist Mystery Books Result in Bland Fare.......2003-09-01
I checked this book and "Truffled Feather" out from our library at the same time. While I thought the food writer + mystery would be a great premise, I was sadly disappointed with these two books. The plots are okay but I was distracted with the author's characterization of Carolyn Blue--a "Forty-Something" writer. I have no idea how old the author is, but she writes from the point of view of someone who has no idea what it is to be in your 40s in 2003 (when this book was published, and presumably, the time frame in which it was set.)I am 43, and Carolyn Blue comes across as more of my mother's age (69). In this book, Carolyn marvels at her ability to use the internet (hello? she has 2 kids in college!),and describes her first motorcycle ride from the perspective of well, my mother! The author's descriptions of Carolyn's wardrobe and hairstyle bring to mind 1970-s style polyester. Carolyn Blue has no sense of humor, and she is just not a very likable heroine. Even the food columns interspersed through the book sound stilted and prissy. In both books, Carolyn comes across as self-centered and self-righteous. The potential for an amusing, fun mystery is there, but the results are rather annoying. This problem with the character ruins the premise of these books for me...I won't be reading any more!

Mediocre.......2005-07-03
This isn't a terrible book with hideous plot holes & rampant spelling errors. And, perhaps, to give Gardner his due, if one has seen many B-Movies of the 30s, 40s & 50s, the humor would be more apparent.
That said, a reasonably competent 14-year-old boy could have written this book. The jokes are obvious, the humor & situations forced. I picked this up hoping for a pale shadow of the humor by other masters such as Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams - and Gardner falls seriously short of this mark. He may be compared to the latter (and worst) efforts of Robert Aspirin - you know the ones I mean. There is no sparkling wit, startling plot developments or well-drawn characters with defined & consistent motivations. It's a parody of an oft-lampooned genre.
His style is unremarkable, his storytelling facile & pedestrian. The idea itself is a good one - I just wish a more gifted writer worked this materiel than Mr. Gardner.
It's not a terrible book, just so completely unremarkable & badly paced that you really should skip it unless you are already a devoted Gardner fan.
See You In The Funny Pages![....].......2002-01-21
Join Roger and his mighty Captain Crusader Decoder Ring as it takes his for a journey to the Cineverse in search of his kidnapped love, Delores. The Cineverse is the home of all the B-Movies where the laws of 'Movie Magic' apply. See Roger at his heroically sidekick best as he runs from Cowboys, Pirates, Jungle Natives and the really evil Dr Dread. The first in a series, this book is great fun to read, it's not side-splittingly funny, but is really amusing. Now i'm going to have to track down the next in the series. Well recommended.

Book Description
Unleash the power of fasting to help you discover your sacred self.
A centuries-old tradition, fasting has historically been recognized as a way to heighten human sensitivity to all things-animate and insensate-in the universe. Ancient cultures understood the link between the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual experience and acknowledged fasting as a means for making this connection.
The Fasting Path is a guide to help readers safely and effectively use fasting to tap into the sacred energy of the earth. Author Stephen Buhner explains how fasting allows us to experience fully the intricate relationship of the mind, body, and the spiritual world. Step by step, Buhner leads readers through the fasting process, preparing them to embrace the physical, emotional, and spiritual healing resulting from this transformational phenomenon.
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest Book Ever.......2007-01-14
This book really explains it all, right down to the basics of fasting and in great detail the physical effects of fasting which is why I was interested in the first place. I also found out that the emotional and spiritual side of fasting is even more important.
Caveat emptor.......2006-06-05
I was not as enthralled with this book as these other reviewers. As an RN, I know a lot about nutrition, and have studied the subject for many years. I've also studied fasting quite a bit.
One of this book's strong points is the physiology of what happens when one fasts, but I must qualify that by saying that some of its scientific assertions are questionable, if not dangerous. For instance, he says it is fine for pregnant women to fast for 2-3 weeks. Most other authorities on fasting, many of whom are MD's, advise pregnant women not to fast, as it could result in brain damage to the fetus. It is certainly not something I would risk.
Other reviewers liked this author's exploration of feelings regarding food, and perhaps this is another one of the book's strong points. But again, some of his recommendations, in my opinion, are medically unsound. Two examples: First, he admonishes his readers to look deep into their childhoods,at parental attitudes, and relationships with food, while fasting, in the wilderness. It seems clear to me that looking deeply into one's childhood and attitudes would be better accomplished in formal therapy with a good therapist, than off by one's self in the wilderness. In fact, a wilderness setting wouldn't be safe. It is well documented that one can become dehydrated, or hypokalemic (dangerously low in potassium) during fasting, especially if one has a pre-existing condition. Someone doing an extended fast should be under medical supervision, or at the least have other people available. Secondly, one's thinking could become distorted while alone in the wilderness without food for weeks on end. It is the job of a therapist to correct one's distorted thinking in a supportive environment.
Another big problem I have with this book is the author's philosophical confusion. At times he endorses Darwinian evolution, saying we are "evolutionarily" adapted for fasting. Darwinian theory assumes there is no supernatural. But through most of the book this author rhapsodizes on his beliefs in Earth worship, and the "aliveness" of all things. Remember, he is founder of the Foundation for Gaian Studies (in case you don't know, Gaia is "mother Earth goddess"). He says that a main reason for fasting is to become open to what "the gods" have to tell you, especially about your purpose in life. How foolish to think one can find one's purpose from imaginary animistic sources. There is no purpose without God our Creator, who in the beginning, created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
Bottom line, I would certainly be careful with what this author says, and read other authors on the subject of fasting. I recommend chapter 5 of "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living," by Rex Russell,MD, "Fasting: the Ultimate Diet," by Allan Cott, MD, and "Fasting and Eating for Health," by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. Also, go straight to the Book of All Books. Fasting is mentioned 74 times in the Bible. See especially Isaiah 58.
Body, Mind and Spirit Fasting........2005-05-16
I read this book after I completed an 18 day Lemonade Fast. I wish I would have read it first though, because it concentrates on Water Fasting, whereas the other books I had previously read where strictly about Lemonade Fasting.
Don't get me wrong, Lemonade Fasting has it's place, but water fasting sounds superior and quicker if done properly. This book also covers Lemonade and Juice Fasting, and not only that, it covers in great depth, all the Spiritual, Emotional and Physical benefits of fasting.
An excellent book that I would highly recommend to anyone that is on a journey of holistic healing.
The Fasting Path..........2005-02-13
...might be my favorite book by Stephen. I appreciate his works so much because he is strongly grounded in the natural world, specifically with plants. He compassionately and lovingly shares the spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of fasting. He is very straightforward about why fasting is important, what you can learn from a fast, and how your body responds when you willingly choose to suffer. This book is amazing, and if you are thinking of fasting, it will definetly pique your interest.
the book I've been looking for.......2004-10-29
I purchased The Fasting Path based on reviews found on Amazon.com. I cannot say it any better than they do. I'm delighted I bought the book. This is an outstanding book -- very helpful to me.

Big Book of Vegetarian.......2007-09-03
This really is a great cookbook. Easy to follow recipes (although some ingredients are hard to find in a small town in the middle of nowhere, where we live), and everything tastes good. I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their cooking.
Excellent modern American vegetarian cookbook for home.......2005-12-13
I received this book as a present, and I am very pleasantly surprised by this book. This book contains modern and creative twists on traditional American dishes as well as other food of ethnic origin making its way into mainstream. All the dishes I've made from it have turned out to be very delicious, the steps are simple to follow, and most of the ingredients are available at well-stocked supermakets. I was surprised how many things I used to have to buy can be made so easy with so little time or effort. This was what I had hoped my Moosewood cookbook would be, but this book actually succeeds because of it is more focused, placing emphasis on beauty through simplicity rather than purely just inventiveness.
Another part I really like about this book is that it actually contain a decent breakfast section. From now on I no longer have to rely on omlettes or toast for breakfast, but instead I can have banana french toast, different muffins, etc.
The recipes here are very straightforward, so they are suitable for most levels of cooks. The only possible drawback is that there are no pictures (though you won't need them), and there are no directions on preparation techniques, so I would suggest this book for those with at least some rudimentary kitchen skills.
Vegetarian Cookbook.......2005-11-11
Great cookbook, has trendy new way to look at origional ingredients.
Made Tomato Bisque today.... Yumm..
Thumbs UP.......2005-09-13
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. I have been vegetarian for many years and I am an avid cook, and this book has provided nothing but perfect food, without meat, every time I have used it. The salads are great, the breakfast foods are great, the entrees are great. You name it, in this book, it's all good.
The recipes are well-tested and well-written recipes. A must have.
A great addition to your cookbook collection!.......2005-08-16
This is an excellent cookbook, lots of variety, well-written, visually pleasing...definitely a good choice for anyone who appreciates easy-to-prepare, delicious recipes.
Customer Reviews:
This book is for anyone interested in dogs........2006-10-25
This is one incredible book. It is exactly as the title states, Companion to Competition. The book starts out with basic rules or concepts that apply universally to teaching your dog good house manner or competitive obedience. The techniques are foolproof and can be easily incorporated into every day interactions with your dog. I started reading this book when my most recent dog was 8 weeks old. This book has allowed me to achieve a bond and level of trust with my dog that I did not realize was possible. I have read many dog training books and this book is the best by far.
please, please, please get this book..........2006-07-13
I've read many dog training books and this is by far the best. If people could just understand how well positive training works then they could understand why negative punishment isn't the best idea.
I have an BS in psychology and specialized in behaviorism. Positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement is the best way to train. I am not going to say that punishment doesn't work but I think all to often it actually harms the dog. To be the pack leader doesn't mean you beat the dog into submission. To gain respect you have to earn respect and using punishment inspires fear
not respect. Fear makes the dog obey but is that what we really want? for our dogs to fear us?!
Excellent!!!.......2006-07-05
I found this book not only easy to read, but the authors genuine love and appreciation for her dogs is evident on every page. The information regarding how and why dogs react to emotional energy, body posture, breathing and even eye contact is fascinating, and the training techniques in part 3 are extremely useful. The underlying and best quality about this book is how the fun times and the relationship a person has with their dog is the most important part of dog ownership.
The shortest review ever.......2006-04-24
This book is fantastic, one of the most interesting and engaging I've found so far.
Book Description
Ralph and Terry Kovel are proud to present the most authoritative and current art pottery book on the market,
Kovels' American Art Pottery: The Collector's Guide to Makers, Marks, and Factory Histories.
After the Kovels began collecting American art pottery in the 1960s, they decided to research and write their first book on the subject, The Kovels' Collector's Guide to American Art Pottery (Crown, 1974). Since that time, art pottery has become one of the most important and popular areas of collecting in this country. Today, many pieces are still very affordable, and collectors everywhere are searching for art pottery treasures. Many other pieces are represented in museum collections, and some pieces are selling for thousands of dollars.
The Kovels have never stopped researching the history of art pottery factories and products, and have been continuously gathering new or previ-ously unpublished information from rediscovered catalogs and records, archaeological digs, and family histories. And now, they offer the most com-plete and up-to-date pottery book available,
Kovels'American Art Pottery.
Written with the collector in mind, this book emphasizes all the information needed for an under-standing of art pottery factories and their wares. The Kovels list large and small art pottery firms and include a general history of each one. Makers, artists and their backgrounds, artists' and factory marks, dates, and lines of pottery are all described in detail. The Kovels discuss the well-known factories such as Rookwood, Weller, and Grueby, as well as the lesser-known or recently recognized potteries such as Avon, Radford, and Zanesville. More than 215 potteries are listed here from A to Z. There is also a full section on tile factories following the art pottery portion of the book.
Kovels' American Art Pottery is extensively illustrated with more than 700 beautiful color and black-and-white photographs of art pottery pieces. Also included are fascinating historical photographs and more than 1,000 illustrations of actual artist and factory marks. The thorough range of photographs and illustrations will enable any collector to identify a piece of art pottery by its decoration, shape, color, or identifying mark. And to complete this valuable reference, a bibliography is provided for all those who wish further information about the historical aspects of a pottery.
Kovels' American Art Pottery is an indispensable book for all collectors, dealers, museums, or antiques enthusiasts who wish to know all they can about this exquisite art form.

New Complete Home Landscaping.......2007-01-03
There are some interesting and workable ideas in the book. Before purchasing you might want to check out your local library first. I'm not disappointed with it however I think the layouts are more for the professional landscape/design area. There is even a section for making your own pesticides. It is a nice book to have on hand.

Fine........2006-08-22
As the name of the book indicates, this is a romanticized version of British Colonial style. The photos are fine. They are meant to look misty and antiquated. The book is pretty but superficial. For a real substance and a true understanding of British colonial style, please refer to British Campaign Furniture by Nicholas A. Brawer.
I wasted my money on this.......2004-10-07
Ok, so I read the other reviews, and since I'm in love with the style, I bought the book thinking it was going to be beautiful. At worst, I thought, I'll get one or two ideas from it. I got the book, and I couldn't believe my eyes. All the photographs look like they were taken with a 1 megapixal camera, then blown up to page size. I had read in a review that this is a "picture book." Well, there are a lot of photos, but they look like a pointalist's painting -- you can seriously see every dot of color throughout the entire photograph. I could not believe this was actually a published work. And the composition is awful. Either the photographer takes long shots of entire rooms that are boring and plain or close-ups that show you one chair and doesn't give you a clue how it would work in a room. I do not recommend anyone spending their money on this.
A Gorgeous, romantic style of East meets West.......2001-04-28
This is the definitive book on british colonial style. It shows the relaxed, romantic, and exotic sense of blending eastern and western styles, cultures, and manners. If you love England at the turn-of-the-century combined with exotic Asia and Africa, you will love this book. The photos are beautiful, with lovely captions and explanations for the style. Even if you don't decorate with this style, you will love it for the photos and armchair travel. Gentlemen's clubs, polo games, verandas, picnics, ....I love this book!

Moving!!.......2004-01-14
This book is amazing. The author's honesty, humor, and sense of adventure really shine through! The ONLY negative comment about the book is that it is simply too short!
