Customer Reviews:
Outstanding, mind-boggling story...in need of a revised edition.......2007-08-28
Let me just say that I bought the book at 4pm and was finished at 4am. Yes, it is that riveting. I applaud the authors' efforts for a job well done and the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because it needs a serious PROFESSIONAL edit. However, while it was somewhat annoying, I didn't give up on the story because it was so intriguing.
Someone mentioned in a review that we all make mistakes...well...LMFAO...yes we DO, and that is precisely why a book is edited *before* it is published and immortalized in print. Because the book is selling so well, it will need another printing soon and that would be the perfect time to polish it. The self-promotion didn't bother me as much as the redundancies, adverb abuse, and the italics for EVERYTHING (proper nouns, cuss words, etc) and things that made no sense at all (Library of Congress to change a name, as another reader pointed out).
BUT - it is STILL worth reading! So imagine what an edit will do. You can still enjoy the story in the meantime until that happens, I recommend it. The ending was brilliant! It also made me much more understanding about the trials of a transexual, how much they have to endure in society. Candy was a trip, and you truly care about her in the story.
I totally support the GHETTOHEAT movement, the GHETTOHEAT (Hickson) book is my favorite book of poetry and I plan to check out the other titles as well. I have faith in this company and know they will only improve.
What a tangled web we weave........2007-08-23
The beggining of this book started off very slow, however as soon as Candy went to jail it got really good. This book is a good example of how you can never be too sure of anything. Just when expected the plot to go one way it took on a completely different turn drawing me in even more. My only complaint besides the beginning of the book would have to be the very last chapter. The plot was set up so well that the ending could have wrapped everything up better.
So true!.......2007-08-23
This book basicly talked about a guy name Andy that deep down inside knew that he was suppose to be a female from day one. Then it want on to Andy changing his name to Candy and taking hormone pills. Candy eventally had gotten locked up and was built like a women. In jail he/she had all of the men flipping over he/she. Most of the men claimed they would never sleep with another man, but Candy found out that was a big front. From the muscle men, to the tough thugs, to the muslims, to the educated men, right to the chrisitan men they all went a piece of Candy. Each one of them had a price to pay with their life or hurting the person they claim to love. This book talks about how HIV is spread because so many people had secrets they would keep until their grave. Eye opener!
Excellent Book!!!.......2007-07-28
this was a really good book ...aside from the name dropping...the book was a real page turner...deff recommended for women who's men are in jail

Book Description
The Lingerie Room offers moral complexity as well as heart-stopping dialogue and compelling fantasy. Any man or woman will find it touching, exciting, and mysterious by turns, overlaid with a darker, enigmatic intensity. Fantasy tends to be either full on romantic sex, wizardry, pornography, comedy, or totally futuristic and unrelated to human perceptions of reality in any form. The Lingerie Room explores the depths of human desperation and despair, the capacity for love and hate, implications of our actions and accountability, the future of society, the complexity of the human race and other terrestrials, and the underlying element of the dark and the light that is ever intertwining within the psyche. The book poses a solution to the mindless money-draining exercise of constantly living a lie when it comes to our intimate relationships. How many of us are living a lie?

Breathtakingly Original.......2005-09-13
The Lingerie Room is a highly original and breathtaking novel by Brownie. Each of the chapters deal with a couple in a relationship which is either stagnant or in various stages of decline. Some find their soulmates, but they are not necessarily the people they came in with; some are headed for tragedy, but all people are tested on an exploratory level, to gauge their commitment to each other. At the same time they are either resisting or indulging in what's on offer at the Lingerie Room. They are put to the test with their intentions to each other in soul baring honesty. They explore their innermost feelings and lay their relationships up for scrutiny amongst the temptations of the lingerie room, a futuristic brothel, where anything goes. In times where the new law of union is anti-marriage, it is indeed a test of their faith in each other's love and dedication to each other.
With a mixture of fascinating characters, including a time warp assassin and a self-absorbed alien being, this well-written, fast moving erotic story makes for a great, riveting read. It would also translate well into a sleek sci-fi movie.
The Lingerie Room.......2005-07-26
This book was given to me as a gift and I must say it is one I was very happy to receive. Although only a short story it is both imaginative and topical, and probably most important it is original. Brownie has a great insight into relationships in the 21st century and combines a heady mix of sex, hi-technology, alien control and raw emotions.
This book will open your eyes to new possibilities and fire the imagination. 4.5 out of 5
A Provocative Tale!.......2005-07-26
The Lingerie Room is a highly provocative fantasy/science fiction tale that's both exotic and erotic. Alien beings and humans interact within a realm of nefarious manipulation. At the center of it all is "The Lingerie Room," where couples are "stripped," in more ways than one, of all pretenses - forced to speak only the truth about their feelings and intensions regarding one another. This spellbinding story enlivens the reader who becomes a behind-the-scenes voyeur during the unveiling of a series of fascinating relationships. I highly recommend this unusual book. - Review written by Laura Somers, author of "Didn't See It Coming."
Mirror of the soul.......2005-07-12
The Lingerie Room, by Brownie, is a unique glimpse into that part of our minds we most often keep to ourselves. Set in the near future, this is a place that pulls out the truth of our inner demons, be they sexual or romantic. It's the ultimate marriage/relationship counselor, throwing the participants into a moment of harsh truth and raw sensuality. Set up as a series of short stories, The Lingerie Room deals with eight sets of couples, each showing a very different side of how emotions and relationships play out. Despite the constant theme, Brownie manages to keep each of these stories unique, bringing to the reader a sense of the erotic and dark within each of us. The characters are believable with a mixture of modern and futuristic elements blended into them that help keep the stories in focus. Brownie even gives us a brief glimpse into the word of those that run The Lingerie Room and even they are not immune to the strange happenings of this place.
For those looking for a quick release into the world of the erotic, or enjoy seeing the shadows that lie in each of our psyches, I recommend The Lingerie Room. I am sure that any who read it will find themselves touched by at least one of the stories, as if looking into a mirror of the soul.
Book Description
An engaging, thorough, and much-needed explanation of the working vagina, Vaginas is a book of accessible facts written by down-to-earth authors whose only agenda is female education. The authors (the mother is an ob/gyn, the daughter a writer) avoid the flowery language and feminist agenda of other books on the subject. They take readers from the mood swings of puberty to the hot flashes of menopause with warmth, humor, and candor. Subjects include the lowdown on hymens, a word on waxing, tips on retrieving lost items, heavy periods, working out the vagina, significant problems (STDs, ectopic pregnancies, fibroids, yeast infections, herpes), ways to keep an aging body performing, and the fun stuff — sex.

Poor book, nothing relevant or insightful........2006-04-08
If grown up women do not know their own genitalia, then there is most definitely something wrong. How can you have a book about female reproductive organs named vaginas when referring to the vulva? It is inaccurate for the authors to persist calling the vulva a vagina. Second, what good is a book of vulvas if the authors do not show any comparative information about the female reproductive organs?
If female genitals are so great, then why do they fail to show them? You would think that a book dedicated to female genitalia would be complied with actual depictions of vulvas of all shapes and sizes to visually see the differences. Otherwise, this book is nothing more then a bunch of articles pasted together.
There are countless books dedicated to the male reproductive organ and they show it all with pride. You come back to female reproductive organs and they hide it all with shame. Why do they not talk about the appearance of the vulva and what men like and dislike. The size of the vagina and the preference of men.
We hear countless opinions of what women prefer, by when men give an expressed opinion it is censored and omitted from books. This is what makes books on female reproductive organ nothing of value.
Once you strip away from feminists fallacies, then maybe you will get a book about female reproductive organs, which is insightful for both genders to explore and read. Currently the only place where I have seen this is the Vagina Institute, but that is a completely different story.

Great book!!! So educational... they don't tell you this stuff in sex- ed!

This is a very useful sourcebook for all things vaginal. Consult this book first, then go see your gyno-guy.
Saved My Marriage.......2005-05-30
Before reading this book, I thought I knew all there was to know about the female sex organ. I was so, so wrong. This book opened my eyes to quite a bit, but the most important thing I learned was that the G-Spot really doesn't exist, medically. This ceased my quest for the Holy Grail of female sexual satisfaction and turned my attention to other areas of my wife's anatomy. Needless to say, we're both extremely pleased. Thanks for writing this book and making the mysterious very, very real.
Informational and Humorous.......2005-05-11
I loved this book! I found both the comic element and the straight-forward style of the book endearing. As I continued to read, I was amazed by how much I was learning (and at my age). This is a great book for any women of all ages!

Book Description
The spectacular Japanese community festivals known as matsuri are centuries old. Even today, in a society driven by technological advancement, these annual rites continue to function as a mechanism for purification and renewal and also to ensure all aspects of communal productivity. The pageantry of these events their extraordinary dress, performance, and Shinto-Buddhist ritual enactment brings communities together in an act of worship that is, as well, an extravagant artistic celebration. Dominated by the gorgeous textiles worn by troupes of participants, matsuri also boldly incorporate decorated banners, exquisitely "dressed" festival wagons, dramatic masks, and elaborate portable shrines. The historical importance of matsuri within the cycle of annual religious events in Japan is also reflected in the representation of these festivals in several pictorial forms, from lavish screen paintings to elegant woodblock prints.
This volume identifies and describes the exuberant textiles and costumes of matsuri and considers their significance within their cultural context. Many of the examples illustrated date from the Meiji period (1868-1912), the last time when handwork was produced by individual artisans for their own use or that of their neighbors. The unique focus on festival arts in this book allows us to identify the special aesthetics that differentiate the textiles worn and used on Japan's holy days. At matsuri a cascade of beautifully crafted garments in vibrant hues meets the eyes, foregrounded distinctly against the hushed simplicity of the Shinto shrine. It is an incredibly vital spectacle of human artistry at the service of a sacred occasion.
Matsuri! documents the use of textiles in more than 25 different festivals scattered over the length and breadth of Japan. The book interweaves these textiles with the other arts that constitute matsuri as well as with their symbolic meanings and the history of textile making in Japan. Gorgeous photographs bring the festivals to life.
Customer Reviews:
A great read with vivid images!!.......2003-12-04
This is a wonderful book that demystifies and illuminates the role of the exuberant textiles and costumes at Shinto-Buddhist celebrations. Through her extensive ethnographic research, she uncovers not only the symbolism and social significance of Japanese festivals, but also how modern people today actively engage and exult in this tradition. Particularly fascinating is the chapter on imported textiles in Kyoto's Gion festival. Gonick's investigations in Japan and China reveal a story of trade and transmission that unexpectedly links several cultures. Central Asian tribal artisans, Indo-Persian ateliers, as well as Ainu chieftains create or convey the astonishing artworks which adorn Japanese festivals (matsuri). I recommend Matsuri! as the epitome of a crossover book that will interest academics and general readers alike.
Very, Very Well Done!.......2003-10-30
This book documents the fascinating history of Matsuri - colorful Japanese village-level festivals. It seeks to convey an understanding of Shinto, the indigenous belief-system of Japan, through color illustrations, field and studio photographs, as well as scholarly descriptions of the lively artworks that accompany Shinto rites. The text parts of the book are interesting and well-researched. The high-quality images add elegance. "Matsuri!" is an academic resource and a lavish coffee table book. I recommend "Matsuri!" it to anyone who enjoys learning about Japanese culture and history.
