In the 4th book in the Loon Lake Fishing mystery series, the small town of Loon Lake, Wisconsin, is soon to be flooded with crowds of people. Hosting both a million dollar bass tournament and a motorcycle rally, the chief of police, Lewellyn "Lew" Ferris, has resigned herself to working long hours with little time for fly-fishing.
On one of their last fishing trips before the crowds converge on Loon Lake, Lew and her close friend, Doc Osborne, find a woman in her car suffering from a drug overdose. Lew knows that there is a DEA investigation underway in the area, and quickly becomes part of the investigating team. She deputizes Doc again to help in the case, and he goes undercover as a newbie Harley owner. During this investigation, Lew and Doc stumble over a tournament contestant with cheating in his plans, and they being to wonder how far someone would go to get the million dollar prize money. If this wasn't enough to keep them busy, an old murder/suicide case resurfaces, and working along with their good friend, Ray Pradt, the dynamic duo puts away the crime-ring intent on bringing evil into their peaceful hometown.
This is a great series! I originally picked up the first installment when my son returned from a visit with relatives in Wisconsin, and was very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the series right away. Lew, Doc, and Ray are vivid, vibrant characters that seem to live right among the pages in these cleverly written books. I love the way that they work together, and I love the suspense regarding the growing relationship between Lew and Doc. The plots in each of the books slowly unfold, and will leave you guessing to the very end. This is a great addition to the cozy genre!

Excellent reading couldn't put the book down. Now a series of books by Victoria Houston. A very likable cast of charactors. A edge of your seat type book. I recommend all of the books by the author, in this series.

I have read all of Victoria Houstons books and believe this is the best yet. There are a lot of suprises and twists to this book. You had best pay attention or you will miss something. I really enjoy all of her books with their intrigue. Her books keep your attention and I have difficulties puting them down. I would certainly recommend this book or any of her others. You do not have to be a person who loves fishing, but some interest in it adds to the pleasure.
What Retired Dentists Get Into!.......2003-05-05
This fourth in the series proves that practice improves an already good series! As a past visitor to Rhinelander, WI and the Northwoods, Houston's stories are always interesting and accurately portray the little bergs in my state.
As an avid mystery/suspense reader AND a registered dental hygienist in Green Bay, I appreciate Houston's knowledge of dentistry and enjoy her references to it in her books. The fly fishing quotes at the beginning of each chapter are great, as are her descriptions of fly fishing. I have lessons in my list of goals to accomplish just from reading her descriptions!
She has managed to put contaminated streams from mining operations, Indian Gaming Casinos, etc., all issues in the local news, in her previous books in accurate detail. I loved the Fishing Tournament in this book, but hope she uses the Harley Rally again so she can develop that story line!
I was one of six people privliged to have dinner with the author as the result of winning a contest in the Green Bay Press Gazette a couple of years ago. What a fun evening! Houston is even more interesting than her characters! I can't wait for the next one in the series to be published so I can tell all my patients about it, too!
Fun and intruigue in the north woods.......2003-03-10
This book was excellent. The characters are even deeper and the settings are very realistic. While I'm reading the Loon Lake mysteries, I feel like I'm there, seeing everything first hand. Lew is my favourite character and i like the way that Ms Houston gives her insecurities and dooubts along with conviction and courage. Ray is more fun with each book and Doc osbourne's crush on Lew is very sweet. I hope there are many more Loon Lake books in the near future!

I, a single, never married, man in my mid-30s, am only partially through this book and am amazed and changed by it. In today's society of lies about sex and relationships, if you are breathing you will be able to find aspects of yourself and people you know and your/their sexuality in this book. It's not whether it's an addiction but whether a particular 'use' is addictive. What a profound concept! Everyone has either done this, had it done to them, or heard about it at least once. It is all around us all the time. It is our culture, at least in the US. Broadening the addictive use of sex to include 'uses' of flirtation, provocativeness, submission/domination and sadism/masochism, fantasy, e-mails/IMing, masturbation, and pornography, as well as full on sex, is clear, effective, and true. If you are sexually active in your dating relationships and wonder why it's not working out (most singles), this applies to you. Use it to understand yourself, your friends, your children. There are a lot of examples involving full-blown addicts, but there is also a lot about sexually acting out in any of the above ways and to any extent, and you can find yourself somewhere among the pages -- men and women, guaranteed. We are all so trained by everything around us to behave in this way. It is sad and destructive. I have used and been used, and picked up this book after three very hurtful experiences with women I really cared about.
A masterpiece which you cannot avoid buying.......2007-03-26
All of the Amazon reader and newspaper reviews of this book (and I have used the Book Review Index to find all of the book reviews) fail to do justice to this book, and the explanation is to be found in the book itself. This book is one of the most original and most important books ever written on addictions. The reason appears on pages xii, 393, and 378-9 of the Tichnor & Fields hardcover First Edition:
This book began by request: Kasl started working with groups of women and found that some brought copies of marginally useful books on sex addiction to group. Seeing the need for a book, Kasl began writing something for her group and had it copied for them. Then the grassfire began. She handed out seven copies of her book bound in a red binding (hence her book's first title prior to commercial publication "The Red Book"). Several days later, forty women wanted copies and demand continued. A few months and a few bookstores later, thousands of copies were sold. Then the magic began: the groups changed her book and added to it because she listened to their voices.
I first got this book at a library and found that I had to buy a copy. Kasl says that her groups all found that the book is so packed with information that you want to read it a little at a time and think about it: not for nothing did so many women give Kasl feedback about her book.
I hope Kasl will publish future editions of this book with what used to be called in the nineteenth century an Analytical Table of Contents at the back of the book. Sally Vincent in her 25 May 1990 Psychology Today (page 36) book review entitled "Nymphos or Doormats" goes through the book adequately but an analytical table of contents would do a better job. And yes, as Vincent notes, about a third of the book deals with trying to readjust the self after all the abuse. But her review fails to convey the originality of the book and why it must be read.
Kasl asks readers--both women and men (there is a chapter on men because the book was written for women)--to write to her regarding their reactions to her book. I hope that someone will submit a book review that adequately summarizes this book, because I do not think that one can be written which conveys how good this book is. I have two copies of this book and expect to have my first copy rebound soon because I have worn the binding out with use. I am sure that you will have the same experience. Consider purchasing extra copies to give to friends, as I have: they will appreciate it.

I was so happy to read about sexual addiction in women. It helped me take a deep look inside of myself and recognize many of the issues stated in the book. I loved the idea that sexuality not a bad word, it was something to be valued. It was easy to read and kept me hooked on what was coming up next.

I sometimes work with people who are struggling with codependent behavior or sexual addictions. This is the book I most often recommend and I also think it is a great reference for professionals such as psychologists, personal coaches and psychiatrists.
In one very good book, Charlotte Kasl provides an excellent, easy to understand model for understanding these issues and how to overcome them. She illustrates these principles with just the right amount of relevant case histories and does it without using a lot of jargon.
This book is solid, but very readable and the author develops her topic with deep compassion. If you are only going to buy one book on this subject, I would go with this one. If you are looking for an uplifting book to compliment it that is not just a restatement of what many other books already say, then I also suggest AWAKENING IN TIME by Jacuelyn Small. She takes a very spiritual which is a synthesis of many schools of thought both East and West perspectives.

Freedom from Relationship/ Co-Dependency/ Sexual Addictions is the greatest asset to this book. I started reading it when my relationship ended with a man I cared for. My bad relationship triggered many unrealistic emotions inside myself that caused me a lot of self damage by acting out and dating guys that were all bad for me because of my low self image since the break-up.
I couldn't see it at the time but I had become Addicted.
Thanks to a friend and this book my healing began two years ago and I feel so much better about myself and about my relationships with others. This book is a MUST READ!

I have small children with bland Minnesota cuisine tastes. I have found some recepies that our whole family would eat. I personally enjoy the cook book but struggle finding many choices for all of us. I find I can modify some of the recepies to make it work for all of us.
I love this book!.......2006-11-13
I don't see how seafood, hummous, tzatziki, baba ghanoush and lentils make a book low-fat. The fact is, this book celebrates Mediterranean cuisine, and much of that cuisine is already low-fat. If you love cooking from this region, you will love this book. The recipes are simple, delicious, mostly easy, and even if when I just read the book for ideas, it inspires me.
It is true that the author modified some recipes to bring them into line with her healthy eating ethos. If you get the willies or heartburn from intake of mucho lard, this works wonderfully. I find the recipes delicious. They are packed with super-food ingredients, full of vitamins and minerals that will make you feel energetic, and not with hydrogenated fats or other proven culprits in heart disease, adult-onset diabetes, or cancer. As I understand it, the point of lowering intake of saturated fat is not necessarily to lose weight -- but to make your life long and healthy / enjoyable. I don't want to get diabetes or heart disease if I can prevent it. Both run in my family -- but for me, so far, at age 40, so good.
Before I continue on this paean, I'd better mention that I have never met the author nor her family or friends, I am not associated with her in any way -- and actually, I'm not a health nut -- just a normal mom trying to cook whole foods for our family. When this book taught me how to efficiently clean shellfish, coaxing them to open and so forth, instead of skipping that step like so many other cookbooks (which leads to sandy mussel broth unless you remember the process!), I knew it was a winner.
The recipes are simple, and true to the region. If you have visited the countries whose cuisine Martha Rose Shulman celebrates, you will recognize the authenticity of ingredients and combinations set forth here. Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and more -- all have classic and newer representatives on these pages. You'll find minted yogurt salad (which I know as 'tzatziki'), lentils, chickpeas, eggplant, even pizza and pasta -- in the index.
Unlike another commenter, I found no great surfeit of garlic. The amounts prescribed seemed quite normal for the regions addressed. But then, perhaps I am used to garlic: it lowers cholesterol, so I use it in cooking for my husband.
If you long for the foods you once enjoyed near the Mediterranean, try this book. If you love seafood and vegetables, and aren't afraid to try seasoning with lemon juice and yogurt, coriander, or cloves, try this book. If you long for beef, cream and mascarpone, try another book.
Fantastic book.......2005-08-19
I decided it was time to write a review about the marvels of this book when I returned from a weekend of cooking 3 meals a day for my Step-Mother-in-Law (and other in-laws)in a little cabin over a long weekend. They loved everything I made from this book.
The recipes are delicious, easy to fix, and easy to follow. Not only have I had success cooking for the inlaws but my family has also loved every recipe. I have notation after notation that says "great" in the index so I can easily go back and find favorites. So far, there's nothing that says "bad" or "bland" next to a recipe title.
I am loosing weight using these recipes and my family is eating healthier too.
Some favorite recipes: Spinach with Chickpeas, Green bean and Garlic soup, and Tuna and Italian bean salad. Her broiled eggplant with garlic and rosemary turned my husband into a eggplant eater after a lifelong aversion to it.
I love this cookbook........2005-04-02
I lived in the Philippines for five years and this is the only cookbook I used the whole time. The recipes are delicious and use fresh ingredients I could find in the markets out in the rural area where I lived. I had to do substitutions for some of the vegetables that weren't available, but the food still came out wonderful. I highly recommend this cookbook.

I have lots of cookbooks but few are as reliable as this one by Ms. Shulman. The lower-fat hummus recipe alone is worth the price of the book. (Another favorite is the Swiss chard soup.) This book was obviously a labor of love for the author. Thanks!

The Welsh Terrier Lead The Way has a good handle on the historical aspects of the dog. However the lack of quality photos distracts from the beauty of the breed and the many wonderful characteristics are blurred by the black and white photos. The book contains many old photos from past champions and breeders but does not contain the in depth information that many people who are interested in the breed are looking for. If you are interested primarily in the dogs history then this is a good book for you.

Great Guide for Making a Alpine Rock Garden.......2007-01-09
This is the authoritive book on making your own alpine rock garden. I looked all over the web for references for constuction of alpine rock gardens, and this book was the only reference of value I could find. I built my own garden as the General Contractor using about 30 ton of quarried basalt rock. We visited 3 quarries locally, and hired a small landscaping firm to place the rock. The book provided valueable information to the novice on preparing the garden bed, particularly making the "scree", the sandly soil for the garden bed. The final scree formula was obtained from the book, 10 parts pea gravel, 10 parts builder's sand, and 3 parts peat moss. The landscaper mixed the materials with his track hoe in a pile, and followed my instructions from the book on placing the rock. The project turned out great and I had never done this before.

I am building a rock garden in my yard and found this book to be a tremendous source of information. I bought a copy for everyone in my dojo, as well as for several members of my motorcycle club.

This is a well-planned book that addresses all the major aspects of rock gardening and has ideas to offer gardeners from all parts of North America. One of its strengths is that the writers understand, through experience, the differences in soil and climate that influence rock gardening in different parts of the continent. Because of this personal experience the dissimilarities are addressed fully and not just mentioned briefly.
With contributions from over 40 leading rock gardeners from all parts of North America this is a truly comprehensive book. The section I found most interesting and relevant was the generous chapter on "Soils" by Louise Parsons. A geologist and rock gardener, she looks at all types of soils, soil components and she offers guidelines for handling soils.
The four sections of the book deal with design principles and materials, types of rock gardens, structures and containers, and regional styles and techniques. The book concludes with an overview of ten public rock gardens, from Alaska to Kansas City, where you'll find fine examples of rock gardening. There is an appendix describing ingredients for rock garden soils and an excellent annotated bibliography.
I learned a great deal from this book - for one thing I had no idea there were so many types of rock gardens (who knew you could make a rock garden on a downtown balcony?). The writing is of uniformly high quality and each of the writers shares with the reader not just knowledge and experience but their passion for rock gardening.

I've taken many, many books out of the library on ponds and water features. This is by far the best. For me the test of a truly great gardening book is whether or not I feel I HAVE to have it in my home library. This is a definate HAVE TO HAVE IT! It covers small water features on up to larger ponds and streams. It has suggestions, clear directions, many pictures and a plant reference section. It tells you how to make a bog garden separate from your pond, how to make a shishi-odoshi (Japanese deer scarer), a tsukubai (Japanese spill basin) among many, many other things. If you only have room for one book on water gardening this is the one to have! Judy

It is a practical and easy to follow book even if you are not familiar with FS. It is a very well designed book, with great illustrations and colors. Enjoy it!

Moen's writing, classes and lectures have been incredibly helpful to me throughout the years. His books are a comprehensive guide to layout and design and I recommend them to all of my colleagues.

I found this book useful, and I have been a designer for five years. I didn't have to use the first few chapters because it covers the basics, but I found many useful chapters in the book, especially those on typography, color and redesign. I have also used some of the material in designing sections.

Well, having met and been fortunate enough to drop one of Daryl Moen's classes in the past, I can safely say that this book cements his status as a classic example of "those who 'teach' because they can't 'do'." (Oh, sorry, was that sentence a bit too "cluttered"?)

Moen's work is very readable, written in a very clear and precise style. Moen addresses most of the trends in modern newspaper layout and design, emphasizing visual journalism as a team effort. It is an excellent introduction to newspaper layout and design, one I will recommend to students and fellow instructors. Coupled with his workbook, Layout and Design should provide newspaper teams the theory and practical advice by which to build solid publications that tell the "story" the best way possible, whether that be through text, photos or "infographics."

In reading Dr. Avenda Hobbs book, Dr. Maya Angelou : As Seen Through the Eyes of America (Honoring a Woman Full of Life) Has really put me almost in Dr. Maya Angelou life. I feel she's the greatest poet of all time. I was very inspired by all the people whom lives she has touched. Including mine. Dr. Hobbs, text put Dr. Angelou closer to my heart. Dr. Angelou has encounter much to be where she is today & is admired by President Clinton, The Honorable Alexis Herman & Bill Cosby and so many more. What got my attention more than anything is the beautiful hardcover that surrounds this delicate book. The colors are such as kente cloth. Vibrate orange and earth tone colors - up close and personal - is Dr. Angelou's face. Humble as ever, a face of concern, but a face of knowledge, power(in her heart). This book is inevitable will go to the top of the charts. Dr. Hobbs, put her mind to work on this piece of art. It was extremely hard to put the book down. Great gifts, even for teenagers. It keeps you in tuned to know how this woman has indeed a big, big, enormous affect on people lives. In three days, I had finished the book it was complete and now it mounts on the bookshelf. Dr. Hobbs brought Dr. Angelou to my home & now I'm bringing it you.
