This is probably one of the most engrossing novels I have ever read. I could barely put it down. As with all of Anne Perry's novels there is a LOT of discussing, speculating, Ect. but there is some interesting information on how differently the claases lived. And of course there is much excitment when Pitt is investigating in the Devil's Acre. Pitt and his wife, Charolette (I spelled it wrong, didn't I?) seem to be a bit competitive in this one. Charolette (don't mock me 'cause I can't spell) acts like she wants to solve the case for Pitt or before him. All in all, I reccomend this book to any reader, diehard Perry and/or CSI fan.

Pitt and Charlotte are at it again. The subjects Ms. Perry chooses always seem to startle me, only because I feel in the Victorian time, it would be such a scandal, which ofcourse is what makes it delicious for us. The women of the Victorian times are trying to break out from some of their perceived roles as women.
Having read these in order, it's fun to see characters reintroduced.
With all the shows on TV, like CSI,it's fun to see what things they did to identify bodies, how long they could keep a dead body, etc.

Dark and moody........2003-05-31
This is the 7th in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series. It starts off in the year 1887 with an interesting premise, and it moves steadily toward an exciting finish. The character of Thomas is more likable than last time, and his wife Charlotte, who doesn't have much to do in the first part of the book, becomes very active later, as does her sister Emily. And there are characters brought back from previous books. Along the way, because of Charlotte's unusual social circumstances and Thomas's profession, we learn some fascinating insights into the class system of that time and place.
The author is consistent in her ability to create a sense of place and character. In DEATH IN THE DEVIL'S ACRE the atmosphere is dark and moody, with a very unpleasant topic. But the book is well done and adds to the series.

In this seventh novel in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt high Victorian mystery series, we leave the exclusive circles of high London society for the brothels and slums, where first a seemingly respectable doctor and then Max, the blackmailing footman from CALLANDER SQUARE, are not only murdered but mutilated -- and then a third murder brings into play Charlotte's connections with London's drawing room society. Perry does a good job in this one, especially in delineating the characters of those whose existence middle class London would rather know about.

I am a MSW candidate at Simmons College with an extra interest in Eating Disorders. I have done a lot of research on the subject and have found this book to be the best I have seen recently. When Your Child has an Eating Disorder is comprehensive and concise. It is the most understandable book, laying out everything in a clear way. I find a lot of books written by therapists convoluted and over intellectualized to the point were one cannot tell what the topic is.
Both layman and professionals will be able to master more knowledge by reading this book than reading a dozen others.

I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to love an eating disordered child or adult. We were dealing with this for 5 years already before I found this book, and I can't emphasize enough how encouraging, informative, supportive and instructive this book is! Anyone who thinks they might have a child with an eating disorder would benefit from getting this book as soon as they can, but I have also recommended that our counselors and family therapist buy this book as well. They would benefit from the depth and breadth of Abigail's experience, but also, it would help considerably with their family therapy sessions if they gave the families this book to read. Most books are written to try to help the person who has the disorder. This book is especially for the caregivers and the parents who experience all the heartache and confusion of trying to help their child. Abigail Natenshon really understands that heartache and confusion and is able to communicate care and concern for the parents and families and yet such helpful instructions on steps they can take. She really believes in the importance of the family system to help the recovery process. When I felt like we had tried absolutely everything and nothing worked, this book gave me renewed hope and ideas for pressing on.

These books provide a nice history of the cooking techniques and the history behind them. I think cultures with more history (like 5,000 years in China) have much more to offer. The book is good reading but I didn't get much from a recipe point of view.

The most beautiful book about every aspect of "American" food you can think of! And it's not just a gorgeous coffee table book but a wonderful cookbook too. I can't imagine why it went out of print because every American home should have one!

This book is enormous both in scope and size. The authors attempt to cover a very large topic in one volume. Even with more than 500 pages there would be no way that this book could possibly cover everything. However, the authors do a great job of trying to address every possible region and nationality of cooking that is found in the US. If you love to cook, or eat, and find yourself knowing more about another country's cuisine than your own, this is valuable asset.
The photography in this book is beautiful and the narrative regarding the topics is very well done. There are many quirky topics covered in this book, for example the story of Tabasco. These offbeat topics add to the understanding of the evolution of American cuisine in a way that would be difficult to comprehend as a foreigner.

The authors cover some topics in more detail than others. For example pizza is addressed on 2 pages. However, given the scope of this undertaking they had to cut off somewhere. There are more recipes included in this book than most cooks will ever prepare in their kitchen.
As far as usefulness in the kitchen this book is a little too large to fit comfortably on the typical countertop. I have found it easiest to copy the recipe and take one sheet of paper into the kitchen instead.
If you are looking for a reasonably comprehensive guide to American food this is a worthy investment.

I was so upset to find out that this book is no longer in print. I purchased this about a year ago and wanted to buy this beautiful history/cookbook for a few people for Christmas but alas, it is no longer available! My advice for anyone who finds this book in a used bookstore, thrift shop, flea market, anywhere to BUY IT! You won't be sorry. I purchased it for the New York and New England sections alone. What makes this book extra nice (aside from the beautiful photographs and masterful editorial layouts) is the history given for every region in the country. This is also a book that can be read as an historical look at the culinary landscape of the US - which, by the way, has just as rich a culinary history as any other country. Even for people who don't cook, this also has the makings of a beautiful coffee table book. The cover alone is so striking that I can see it as the centerpiece on a table or bookshelf in any home with some New England flair. Even if you can't find it anywhere, I urge you to go look at this book in a library - it's that beautiful. I'm hoping it goes back into print. I'd buy a bunch and save them for gifts.

The color pictures and good care advice make this a useful first book on turtles. Some incorrect information is mixed in (e.g. the Asian box turtle[tropical and aquatic] is said to be cared for like the Chinese box turtle [temperate and terrestrial]). And the lack of an index makes it useless at a quick resource.

This is agueably one of the best books in the collectors series. It does a very good job without being overly large and heavy. I would like to see more information on each item but agree with the author's decision to put in a lot of pictures in preference to a lot of words. Information can be found elsewhere and these pictures are great and will put the reader on the right track.

This is the second book in a series of five by Gene Florence. This is very informative with each piece having a value placed on it. I have used mine so much it is getting worn out It has updated values from 1998 and I would highly recommend this to any serious collector of Occupied Japan. It is an outstanding piece of reference material.

I cannot say enough good things about any of these reference books. My husband and I have learned so much from this material. I will not even purchase a piece until I find it in one of Gene's books. The pictures are beautiful and each piece has an updated value from 1999. What more could and OJ collector want. I would recommend this to anyone who is a serious collector of Occupied Japan. The investment for the book is worth it a thousand times over.

Gets you in the mood.......2007-07-24
The Granite Kiss is an endearing look at the practical and esthetic aspects of creating and repairing stone walls. The book has an artistic quality with its extra wide pages with pen and ink drawings of walls under construction or old walls still standing. There are no photos.
There is a feeling of working alongside the author while he idly rambles about the task at hand and jobs he has completed in his career. I especially enjoyed his nicknames for the various rock shapes likely to be found in any imperfect rockpile and the relationships the shapes may have to each other in a completed wall. All in all, stone wall building is a task of patience and persistance - which the author relays in topics such as: spreading the "good" rocks out; working with rocks that are not perfect blocklike shapes, time management; and what is likely to stand the test of time.
This is a book to get you into the slow and methodical, but contemplative mood for learning and practicing this dying art.
My favorite stone-wall how-to book.......2002-11-29
Of the half-dozen books I bought in preparation for recycling some of the old stonewalls up through the woods on our farm into a new retaining wall, this is my clear favorite. It is more detailed than John Vivian's Building Stone Walls, particularly when it comes to retaining walls. Because it is not as glossy and illustrated as Haywards' Stone in the Garden or David Reed's Stonescaping (which are, by the way, both excellent in their own right), I'm not as wary about taking it out to the project with me.
The text is clear and concise, and includes a healthy dose of stone philosophy and the index is detailed enough to help the do-it-yourselfer find what he needs, but short enough so that he can find what he wants, even if he does not know the proper name for it.
However, the main reason I like this book so much is Gardner's assurance that anyone who puts his mind to it -- which includes me -- can build a stone wall. While his respect for old stone walls and the art of building them is obvious, he also has a healthy dose of practicality. "The notion that all, or even most, of the old stone-work we see around New England is the result of concentrated applicaion of arcane skill," he write, " is demonstrably false." Once that sacred cow was out of the way, my confidence level went up and anything seemed possible.
The black & white drawings that illustrate the text are clear and very helpful.
Two over one, one over two........2002-04-03
This is a wonderful book...it's about stone walls, and about building stone walls, and all the things stone walls have meant and done for 350 years, and what it feels like to live and work in a place where just past the urban sprawl every one of those 350 years blends with this one (and if you look out the corner of your eye there're older times than that hiding in the shadows.)
It's not a homeowner howto, though it's got everything you can learn from a book. It's a book for masons who love their craft, New Englanders who love their home place, and anyone who likes good work. Whatever that means to you.

This study describes the beginnings of a movement which has created another face for Ethiopian Christianity. The expatriate missionary-evangelists, who in 1927 were encouraged by Emperor Haile Selassie to work in southern Ethiopia, intentionally by-passed the Orthodox model and made a fresh start. Three of the many facets of the movement comprise the body of the book. There is the religious backdrop of Orthodox Christianity and the expatriates' fundamentalist traditions; then the praxis and polity of their work; finally the post-Occupation outcome which confirmed their choices. Since its beginning in 1932 the New Churches Movement has impacted every part of Ethiopian society: religious, political and socio-economic. It demonstrates that a fresh start can be complementary rather than competitive. The movement's success encourages missionary-evangelists to continue making new beginnings.
