Not very good for beginners who learn Greek on their own.......2007-08-27
This is a great dictionary but only for people that can read Greek. I bought this dictionary for a friend of mine and noticed that all the words were phonetically written in Greek. Not a problem for me since I am Greek, but this was of no use for him since he is just starting to learn on his own
Excellent dictionary - Too small in size!.......2005-04-11
Stavropoulos' dictionaries are the best available for modern demotic Greek, and the product of a truly intimate knowledge of both Greek and English. It is a great shame, therefore, that Oxford University Press, presumably for financial reasons, has produced the English-Greek volume in a significantly smaller size than its Greek-English companion, which is far more comfortable to use. The result is that the English-Greek edition, hard-bound and at about 900 pages thick, is bulky and awkward to handle, and simply does not stand on the bookshelf as a companion to the Greek-English edition. I sincerely hope, however, that OUP does not seek to rectify the situation by making the Greek-English as uncomfortably small in size as its English-Greek companion.
The only "sophisticated" English-Greek dictionary out there.......2002-01-27
Stavropoulos' English-Greek dictionary undoubtedly stands out among the crowd. While most other English-Greek dictionaries are little more than bilingual word lists (table=trapezi), this dictionary strives to answer the real questions that one is asking when looking up a word in a dictionary: "what does it mean, how is it used, what compound expressions is it part of, and how are these translated?"
It is the only English-Greek dictionary I have seen which follows this "intelligent" approach. As such, I would highly recommend it (and its Greek-English companion volume) to anyone looking for a good dictionary.
The best English-Greek dictionary of this size.......2000-04-29
This dictionary is now a standard one volume easy to use English-Greek (modern Greek) dictionary. Although it is not large in size [882pg. and 12cm(wide)*19cm(tall)] it is updated, easy to use and at a very reasonable price.

Good dictionary but lacking..........2007-02-13
I am reading thru Kazantzakis's Freedom or Death (Captain Michalis in Greek) and my small Oxford lexicon by Pring lacks a number of words in Kazantzakis's novel. So I bought Stavropoulos's Oxford Greek English Learner's Dictionary to help me out. I am finding that Stavropoulos's dictionary contains many of Kazantzakis's words that are not in Pring's lexicon, but, unfortunately, Stavropoulos also does not include a number of other words Kazantzakis uses in this novel. This is somewhat disappointing since Kazantzakis is a well-known Greek author and one would anticipate that his words would be in a Modern Greek lexicon.
This said, I have found Stavropoulos's lexicon invaluable in most occasions in which I am reading Modern Greek. Although I wish he was more up to date w/ Kazantzakis, I recommend this lexicon for those who need good explanations of Modern Greek word usage.
Finally, Stavropoulos includes parsing and declension tables at the end of his lexicon, and these are very useful for determining the various forms of Greek nouns and verbs. In fact, each entry in his lexicon includes a number that refers to the relevant parsing/declension table. This is a great help for readers of Modern Greek.
ya sas.......2005-09-29
Monumental arbeit!I congratulate Oxford and Mr.Stavropoulus for their work.Almost every Greek word has sample sentences explaining the meaning and the context that I find helpful to build up and boost the language ability.I also extend my gratitude to Amazon.com for timely arrival and the latest edition of the dictionary.
one more helpful lexical resource for Modern Greek.......2005-07-21
Because of the phenomenon of diglossia in Modern Greek, there is probably no dictionary that will be entirely satisfactory for all uses. I bought the Oxford Greek-English Learner's Dictionary to supplement other dictionaries I have in a project to translate some material published by a monastery on Mount Athos. The Learner's Dictionary is nicely priced at only $19.95 and is a huge help with Modern Greek idioms, but it favors the demotic over the katharevousa form of the language to such an extent that it is less useful than some older dictionaries for use in reading older or more conservative texts, because it omits quite a few words or forms of words that are still in general use. If you are going to buy only one Modern Greek-English dictionary for general use, this will probably do the job, but if you buy more than one and balance the Learner's Dictionary with a more conservative dictionary (or dictionaries), you will probably do even better.

Review by Ken Fassman is misleading........2003-02-11
Please note that this book is clearly titled as being a Greek-English dictionary, which means that you'll only find Greek words translated into English. This allows more Greek words to be listed. If you want a dictionary that works both ways, then you'll need to obtain a Greek-English/English-Greek dictionary, also referred to sometimes as English-Greek-English. There are also English-Greek dictionaries, which only translate English words into Greek...Well, you get the idea.
This particular resource is exactly what it says it is, and it's one of the best. I'm actually purchasing a second copy for a friend.

Obsolete? Not unless horse anatomy becomes obsolete. .......2006-05-19
This book is so good that it will survive the test of time no matter what. Reading and understanding it gives the reader the ability to judge correctly how to superbly care for horses. I'm very glad that Dr. Rooney has updated it, but I sure wouldn't be throwing out the old versions yet! I've worked with horses for 46 years, and I always have a copy of Rooney handy, plus a loaner copy for others.
A priceless book for anyone involved in the care of horses.
Obsolete.......2006-02-01
This first edition is long, long out-of-date, and it is high time Amazon woke up and stopped misleading the public by offering remaindered books without so identifying them.
Book Description
One of the most important aspects of garden design has always been the relationship between a garden and its surrounding landscape. Gardens Without Boundaries looks at the ways in which today’s leading garden and landscape designers have concealed boundaries, disguised edges, or brought “nature” up to the house, in order to link private gardens to the wider terrain beyond. It is a comprehensive work that not only challenges preconceptions of contemporary garden design, but provides fresh ideas and inspiration to garden owners everywhere.

Book Description
Critical Reflections draws together the multi-disciplinary research of scholars working in/on cities across Southeast Asia. The fourteen essays collected in the volume are organised into three thematic sections: (re)conceptualisation, competition and intervention. Collectively, these reflections contribute to and interrogate the expanding urban and regional studies literature. The volume constitutes a critical corrective to the existing literature which all-too-often seeks to diagnose contemporary urban trends everywhere from a small number of, mostly Western, "paradigmatic cases". Yet, while acknowledging the increasing interconnectedness and shared global orientation of most cities in Southeast Asia, the volume is wary of positing an equally generalising regional model. Individually, these essays attend to the diversity of contemporary urban experiences in Southeast Asia.

Book Description
Malcolm X's political evolution after he left the Nation of Islam. Analyzes the conflicts that resulted in Malcolm's being driven out of the Nation, his views on how to combat anti-Black discrimination, and how, as he put it, to "internationalize" the struggle.
Customer Reviews:
Essential.......2006-06-23
I agree that this is the best book on Malcolm X and the evolution of his thought and action in the last year of his life. Breitman does well to faithfully draw out, including the contradictions Malcolm was working through, the pathways Malcolm was pursuing... his aims, his objectives, his goals... Breitman gives good context, clearly debunks myths and obfuscations and tackles common attacks that were levied against Malcolm in the year before and after his murder. Should be read hand in hand with Malcolm X Speaks... pretty much essential if you care at all about anything really.
Great Book, Helps to Really Understand Malcolm.......2005-12-22
I, like the author, believe that the Autobiography of Malcolm X left out crucial elements to understanding Malcolm's life and sentiments because it did not cover his life to the last day. This book actually looks at Malcolm's life in three separate stages: his life up until and including being a Nation of Islam spokesperson, his transition period while he was breaking with the Nation of Islam and shortly thereafter, and the path he was setting for himself as he was killed.
This book aims to prove that Malcolm was setting an anti-imperialist path, and internationalist path, an anti-capitalist path, a truly revolutionary and truly dangerous (for the ruling classes) path.
I think the book proves it, and I respect Malcolm all the more for it.
This book also contains criticisms of Malcolm by various people, notably some liberals, and so it's good to get an idea of where people stood, who was really afraid of Malcolm and what he was really starting to represent.
Great malcolm.......2004-07-03
This is a great book for the period of time in Malcolm's life that might be the least covered. Not to long of a read, but full of information not readily available when looking for Malcolm.
It dispels the idea of Malcolm just being a racist anti Semite, how he was portrayed by the media during and after his life, but installs the belief that he was a revolutionary fighting for the human rights of all, and nothing could more truthful.
The Real Malcolm In His Last Year.......2002-07-19
This excellent little book traces the evolution of the thought and action of Malcolm X in the last eleven months of his life.Malcolm rejected the anti-Semitism and anti-woman policies of the Nation of Islam, and its refusal to involve itself in the civil rights movement. He continued to more and more place the Black struggle in this country in the world context : in the context of the struggle of the workers and farmers in Asia , Africa, and Latin America against imperialism, Yanki imperialism in the first place. He continued to expose the role of the Democratic Party to fool the masses of working people into thinking that we have a friend among our oppressors and exploiters. More and more, he spoke out against capitialism as the cause of racism and described himself unabashedly as pro-socialist.He spoke of the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cuban revolutions as examples of what we working people must do HERE for the future of all humanity. The author is no academic ' observer'; he covered Malcolm's evolution for The Militant newspaper, the only place Malcolm's speeches were published in full and undistorted after he left the Nation of Islam. This book is an excellent companion volume to read alongside Malcolm's actual speeches, also published by Pathfinder Press.
Malcolm in action.......2002-07-19
I was surprised when I read this book. It gives Malcolm X's speech announcing his political program for fighting for Black control of the black community and Justice. I didnt know what that was before I read it. I read the talk Malcolm gave introducing the program and he talks about how he was supposed to bring Che Guevara up to the meeting, but Che couldn't make it. Heavy Stuff. Breitman is pretty good at defending Malcolm X against critics and showing what the man stood for without imposing his own views on him. We need to see how Malcolm X was in action to get a better idea how we can advance the struggle.

Book Description
On March 27, 1950, the author turned 17; ten days later he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his training in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he first learned of the "police action" in Korea, and like many others he volunteered for duty there. His biggest fear was that the action would be over by the time he arrived in Korea.
Private Morrow was assigned as a rifleman in the 24th Infantry Regiment Combat Team, one of the most outstanding units in Korea and the last all black army unit; he served with distinction until he was wounded. After a short stint in Pusan, he became a paratrooper and rigger in the 8081st Airborne and Resupplying Company stationed in southern Japan. Throughout his time in the service, Private Morrow had to face the institutional racism of the U.S. Army where black soldiers consistently served longer and performed more dangerous duties than white soldiers. The effects of this on the 18-year-old private were longtermand are described here.
Customer Reviews:
It's About Time.......2003-01-13
So much has been published on WW II in the past few years due to the 50th anniversary, that it is discouraging that the contribution of Black Americans has been so neglected, both in the picture books and text. Bravo to Mr. Morrow for his courage then and now, because many who felt the sting of racism in the military refused to write about it. Despite Truman's mandate to desegregate the military in 1948, the armed forces, particularly the Army, strenuously resisted, and it was years before the mandate was fully implemented. Many Americans do not realize that the Army was segregated, and wonder why there were no Black soldiers in the movie "Sergeant Ryan." Mr. Morrow's book will help open the door to the truth, and help us take one more step forward in ending racism.
Coming of Age.......2001-07-28
Many coming of age stories have been written, but rarely from the viewpoint of an African-American soldier, even more rarely from the viewpoint of an enlisted man with only a grade-school education. Morrow joins the US Army at 17 during the Korean ýWarý to satisfy his thirst for adventure and demonstrate his patriotism. He volunteers for front line combat in Korea and finds out on arriving that life ainýt like the movies. We live through his eyes and thoughts as he is forced to kill or be killed. After he is wounded and sent to for rest and recuperation, we also share his experience of wartime romance. However, this is not your usual jingoistic, gung-ho, shoot-em up war story. Morrow also allows us to experience the questions that haunt him as he trudges through the deadly countryside. This is an educational and entertaining book for any reader interested in African-American and/or military history. I would also recommend this book as a gift for a young man or woman as a Rites of Passage present. I am a woman, who does not usually read war stories, but this held my interest and provided an in depth, positive, human account of one manýs war experiences. It should be made into a movie. It has all the qualifications: a quest, adventures, and love interest.
Review of Curtis Morrow's What's a Commie ever Donme to Blac.......2000-02-16
I think it is wonderful that someone was thoughtful enough to write down a personal experience during a war that was very unpopular at the time. This is recorded history for generations to come. It is a touching story. I urge people to read about our history. It may be one step toward making the world a better place.
Asante sana ("Thank you very much") for your honesty!.......2000-02-12
War memoirs are not my customary reading fare, but meeting you was such a pleasure that I was compelled to buy the book and read your words. I was not disappointed. Your honesty is refreshing. Your approach to the subject at hand is forthright and down-to-earth. Your description and analysis of the racism and discrimination that you and your brothers faced is clear and direct. I've shared your book with several friends. Two are women like me who generally don't read anything related to war. Your book opened a door for us and gave us another way of looking at America's past, present, and future. Keep on writing and tellin' it like it is {was}. Your willingness to share yourself in this way, as you tell our story, is appreciated. Your story of the "Buffalo Soldiers'" role in the Korean War, reflects a perspective that is generally ignored in the history books. I can't thank you enough for supplementing those books with some much needed history that won't be forgotten, thanks to your contribution.
Keep on keepin' on!
My Father Was There:-(.......1999-10-24
"Dear Mr Morrow; I can't express how Korean war memoir, made me feel. My dad was there too (Korea, 1950/51).. Often I've wondered what it was like for him. Sure, he told us all the "funny" things this or that buddy did while the whole thing went on. But he spares us all the gore. So often I've wondered WHY he would awaken in the middle of the night and just sit on the front porch polishing his guns, looking out and and rubbing, rubbing, rubbing that smelly polish over his guns. I told myself it was a "man thing" and it could have well been. But I don't think so. The older I get, the more I'm convinced he hid plenty from us, especially his only daughter, his youngest child. Me.
Thank you for writing the book. I am so happy I purchase a copy, it explained so many things to me, things I could only wonder about. Again thank you for making such knowledge advailable, as painfully as I am sure it must've been for you to relive ".
PS; Your wonderful book serve as is a valuable lession to all,, which is, African American's history can only be told by African Americans..
