Best of its kind.......2000-05-01
This is one of those informatiojn books that would find its place very easily in any collection. There are very high quality photos from the Natural History Museums in London and New York.
The author has worked as a palaeontologist at the natural History Museum in London for 13 yrs (at time of publication), so you should feel reassured that it is authoratative.
As the best info books have, it includes a glossary and index.
A companion volume on T-Rex is the same high quality.

Product Description
During the second half of the twentieth century, Major League Baseball and its affiliated minor leagues evolved from local and regional entities governing the play of Americas favorite pastime to national business organizations. The relocation of teams, league expansion, the advent of free agency and an influx of international players has made baseball big business, on an increasingly global scale. Focusing on the last fifty years, this work examines the past and present commercial elements of organized baseball, emphasizing the dual rolescompetitive sport and profitable businesswhich the sport must now fulfill. Twenty-five essays cover five areas integral to the economic side of baseball: business and finance, human resources, international relations, management and leadership and sports marketing. Detailed discussions of the redistribution of revenues, the history of player unionization, aggressive global marketing, strategies of franchise owners and an evaluation of fan costs, among other topics introduce the reader to the important issues and specific challenges professional baseball faces in an increasingly crowdedyet geographically expansivesports marketplace. The work is also indexed.

The elements of style: a style guide for writers - the original 1918 text from William Strunk.
Customer Reviews:
Clarity, brevity and style. A little masterpiece........2006-01-11
In our age of sloppy TV captioning, txt and other loose applications of our language and grammar there is something of a revival (perhaps it is a backlash) for books on grammar and the art of writing.
Already EATS SHOOTS & LEAVES has made the best-seller lists, and now we're seeing a repackaging industry forming around Strunk's ELEMENTS OF STYLE. Last December the gorgeous illustrated 4th Edition was published in hardcover, and now we have the reprint of the 1918 first edition. Which is the best choice?
First, I'd eliminate EATS SHOOTS AND LEAVES from consideration. It is a pretty sniffy volume, and I was utterly worn out by the author's hyperactive style of prose. Also, the review in New Yorker fairly pointed out at least a dozen faux pas made by the author. Worse, I detected in that volume the peculiarly English propensity to equate decent grammar with class consciousness. ES&L carries an unpleasant whiff of snobbery that detracts from the discussion.
A far better choice is The Elements of Style. It has deservedly functioned for decades as a bible for journalists and other dedicated wordsmiths. As a buyer you have the choice of this reprint of the 1918 text or the 4th edition that was largely updated by that master of clear, powerful prose: E.B. White
Despite its age, this 1918 book still has immediacy and relevance because the focus is on brevity, clarity and the fine art of telling the story without distractions and frills. In that sense it is a thoroughly modern volume that recognises that we needn't over-decorate our sentences in order to make our point and to paint our pictures. The rules of grammar laid down here are still true.
Yes, it shows some signs of age. Nevertheless I can happily recommend this volume, though I prefer the updated Strunk & White edition for my day to day reference. It was revised for a reason.
Even so, either edition deserves to live by your computer, or to dwell on the desk of your kids. And I hope you wear out your copy: this is a tradition for owners of this simple, direct masterpiece.
The original of the great guide.......2005-10-26
I first encountered Strunk and White's 'Elements of Style' when I was an undergraduate, and I have been a fan of this book ever sense. Perhaps it is because of the excellent teamwork that is apparent on the pages between the master of language, William Strunk, and the master of narrative, E.B. White. How can you go wrong learning grammar from the likes of the author of such wonderful tales as Stuart Little?
During my English composition class as an undergraduate, we had to read this book twice, once at the beginning of the term, and again at the end. I have since referred to the pages so often that I am on my fourth or fifth copy, as the binding and pages have worn out from use. Long before books such as 'Woe is I' or 'Eats, Shoots and Leaves', this book, 'The Elements of Style' has held a certain pride of place in being useful, accessible and interesting in its presentation of a traditionally and typically boring subject - grammar and usage.
Among the pieces I re-read on a frequent basis is the list of commonly misused or abused words and phrases. Here is a list of easily corrected mistakes that the typical writer and speaker needs to keep in mind. Also, the suggestions for composition are gentle reminders that creativity and good craftsmanship need not be contradictory.
'Elements of Style' has been such a popular book that it has undergone several revisions, and has been in print for a very long time. However, this text brings back the original work, the 'authorised' version, as it were, by which to compare the later revised and new revised standard version. If I am making this sound like a work of biblical stature, you may be on to something - just as people swear on the Bible in courts and to take oaths, there are many who swear by this text for proper command of the English langauge.
This is a wonderful gift and wonderful treat for oneself.

For many first-time screenwriters, the most daunting aspect of getting underway is learning the proper format. Paul Argentini lends a helping hand with Elements of Style for Screenwriters. It's a good nuts-and-bolts introduction to the terminology of filmmaking and a step-by-step guide to making sure your opus is properly formatted. Argentini starts with a short sample screenplay as a concrete example, peppered with annotations as simple as "use plain Arabic numbers" and as complex as "(continuing) not needed here--LUDVINNIA (O.S.) and LUDVINNIA are separate elements." Don't worry, when it's all laid out on the script it makes a lot of sense. Most of the book is set up as a glossary of film terms, though Argentini does not stop at mere definitions, also filling the book with practical advice. He explains that a "talking heads" scene refers to one that is all dialogue and no action and points out that it will doom your script. The second portion of the book--considerably smaller--lays out the elements of style for playwriting in a similar sample and glossary fashion. Argentini also helpfully explains the broader differences between writing for the stage and writing for the screen (in a nutshell, the playwright can get away with those talking-head scenes.) A good, practical manual that should take a lot of the fear out of diving into that first script. --Ali Davis

Customer Reviews:
The author can't write, and I am pretty sure has never had a screenplay produced.......2007-09-10
This book is so incoherently and terribly written that I only got through the 3rd page of the intorduction out of morbid fascination. Consider a sentence from the author's biography that illustrates, simultaneously, his lack of grammatical ability and credits:
"Awarded a Playwriting Fellowship by the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, he is a former Boston and Washington D.C. editor, reporter and photographer."
That is, by the way, the most specific sentence of his four-sentence bio, besides "He graduated from Boston University".
A few sentences from the introduction:
"There will be some repetitious information on these pages. But, there are no wrong examples to remember. The Elements of Style for Screenwriters was not written to teach screenwriting, or to give you an insight into the dramatic art, although it might come close and I beg your forgiveness."
I accidentally bent the cover, but I am sure Barnes and Noble will take it back out of shame.
As Essential to Screenwriters as Strunk & White is to All Writers.......2007-02-11
Yes, you'll use this book fewer times as you keep writing screenplays simply because you'll commit more of it to memory. Yes, you'll want one for your shelves, one for your briefcase, and one for your office. Yes, they'll all be well used. And yes, this will be as invaluable a tool to you as your best loved dictionary and thesaurus. I require it of all my screenwriting students who are discouraged from ever selling it back to the bookstore, especially if they plan to take an advanced class with me. I also recommend this to all my workshop participants.
Get this book, read it through cover to cover once, and then flip through the alphabetized screenwriting terms when you need to refresh yourself as you write your script. Good luck with your project!
Look at me! Look at my cap........2005-10-04
This book is basically an extensive glossary of screenwriting terms, and will help the beginning (and the experienced) screenwriter make sure that his or her screenplay is formatted correctly and that it uses the correct terms. The book is arranged alphabetically, so if you need to look up "Fade In" or "Margins," you can turn right to the correct pages.
The book lists a lot of terms, however, that you should never use in a spec script that you just want to show to producers and investors. Use this in conjuction with other screenwriting books to get a better idea of this.
The book is not always perfectly written either--and don't let its title fool you into thinking it has anything to do with Strunk and White--but it is helpful, and when I'm writing a screenplay, I use it often.
THE Screenplay Writer's Guide.......2005-05-07
If you're into writing screenplays, this is THE Essential Screenplay Writer's Guide. I used it to write a couple of screenplays for Triggerstreet.com. In all of the feedback I received, not one person knocked the style of my works.
Writing.......2005-01-22
Maybe I'm crazy, but I tend not to like writing reference books that are terribly written.

The horse- and rider-training handbook of an internationally renowned master horseman.
Customer Reviews:
Effective Horse Communication.......2007-08-21
Author writes in an easy to read conversational format. He emphasises the importance of horse and rider spending time together to get to know each other. Building of trust on both the horse and rider. I recommend this book. Also watch RFD TV on satelitte.
This is the only natural horsemanship book you'll ever need.......2007-07-31
This is it. Everything is in this book. One can study this book for years and find something new in it each time. Natural horsemanship is so old, it's new again. Pat Parelli is the only one who has managed to put it all together in one place with one title. Since the Dorrance brothers and Ronnie Willis have graduated to Horseman's Heaven, the next best thing is learning from one of their star pupils. Pat is entertaining and almost always profound. The only question is do you savvy savvy?
Clinton Anderson's Down Under Horsemanship book is better.......2007-06-23
While I liked some aspects of Pat's book I found it confusing, unclear, in some instances, repetitive and in some cases, not useful for me at all. He mentions that horses that bite (my horse) bite because you let them get too close (duh!) yet the 1st lesson to gain respect has you touching the horses muzzle to get him to back up (my horse tried to bite me- so, now what?). One of the next exercises has you touching his chest, you know the part of the body directly under the horses' head.... the head that has the biting teeth in it... my horse tried to bite me again! I am giving up on Pat's book for now. Clinton Anderson's book "Down Under Horsemanship" teaches how to use a stick to keep the horse away (not using it to threaten but as an extension of your arm). Clinton's book has step by step pictures and explanations of what can go wrong (both with the horse and human) and how to fix what went wrong. Both he and Pat have similar philosophies but Clinton's book flows much better, gives better examples, describes problems and solutions and stresses how to progress. I would stick with Clinton's book.
Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship.......2007-05-12
I bought this book for my daughter she thought it was good but did prefer John Lyons and Pat Parelli's DVD better as it was visual and this book was against some of her own ideas but a great book if you like the techniques that Pat Parelli uses.
He uses phrases a little old fashion for the younger generation and therefore my daughter found his relationship to the horses a little hard to understand as she did not know the people he refered to.
It does teach all about respect for the horse and from the horse and is well described none the less. A lot of important facts about how to teach a horse, use of spurs, trailer loading, tools, yeilding and many basic detailed descriptions of cantering, techniques of he rein, timing, Desensitizing, voice cues and much more. A great all in one book with black and white photos.
Has a different technique to John Lyons which she decided she liked best after reading this book
The hook.......2007-05-12
There are a lot of so called "natural horsemaship" books, dvds etc out there. I was already steered in this direction because my horse is a parelli student, but I usually tend to do my own thing and so, I checked out a few of the other programs out there, and bought this book despite some reviewers opinions about Pat being a great salesman, using terms that didn't need to be used, creating his own language etc. Let me say this.. yes, this book which is relatively inexpensive in the big scheme of how much horse training costs. It is also Pats "hook", or method he uses to spark interest in his program. It works. It is a great overview of the parelli program, but if you are looking for one little book to teach you how to do it, don't waste your money. The books alone, even if you are an experienced horseperson, are not going to give you enough information. If you want to get a feeling for what natural horsemanship is all about, the book will answer the questions you have, and spark some new ones! I have the entire parelli program now, and am going to one of the conferences this year, to see the Pat and his wife Linda in action. The book hooked me! I'm a praelli devotee now, and urge all horse people to give it a try. Its a new way of interacting with horses, that makes it more fun than you can imagine, while stressing safety and savvy around these large, potentially dangerous, but wonderful and beautiful animals. I know.. just drink the cool aid!

Deception.......2001-05-19
It seems that all the microsoft publisher 2000 books do not mention what program they are dealing with other than microsoft publisher 2000 which is not sufficient. It is a pity that a company can't spell out what they don't include and still use what the computer has on its programs. Of all the books on Microsoft Publisher 2000 which I do have, don't mention it isn't any use for microsoft publisher 2000, home publishing. I have sent the book back and wonder if any of the other books listed do the same thing as IDG
Great book.......2001-02-05

Book Description
Some American children do not realize how blessed they are to have so many educational choices. There are more than 3,000 universities and colleges in the United States offering every subject from Architecture to Zoology. An average American student needs only the will to study and the zeal to accomplish and the sky is the limit. Some students do not explore the educational opportunities presented to them. They let the pressures of educational demands overwhelm them and many drop out of school for personal reasons. For many foreign students like me, the choices are limited and the road to success ranges from slim to none. The obstacles are many and strenuous and they include; financial problems, home sickness, culture shock, weather adjustment, Immigration Department concerns, loneliness and the list goes on. In the midst of these problems quitting is not an option. There are two goals, the will to survive and succeed because this opportunity may not be available again. My story is based on the will to survive and accomplish a dream. How did I survive? Find out when you read, All I wanted was an Education; the Epic of a foreign Student.

The Journey through Education.......2004-04-30
I highly recommend this book. I have recommended that my students read this book. It is the incredible journey of a man whose desire to obtain an education in America led him to leave his country of Nigeria. This true story documents the trials of one man who left behind his country, his family, his life, to face the uncertain future in a new country in order to be better educated. He overcame cultural, ecomonic and language barriers, often relying on the goodness of others and the strength from his faith. A rare insight into the life of a Catholic Priest in his pursuit of higher education to follow an even higher calling. It is exciting, poignant, and touching.
