Book Description
In the face of injustice, one person committed to a holy cause can make a difference. This is the story of how one lawyer, confronted with the martyrdom of a Christian missionary, stands up to injustice despite seemingly insurmountable odds.
In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, two American missionaries are targeted by the infamous religious police–the Muttawa. The man is tortured and killed; his wife arrested on trumped-up charges before being deported to the U.S.
Compelled by the injustice of her plight, young attorney Brad Carson files an unprecedented civil rights suit against Saudi Arabia and the ruthless head of the Muttawa. But the suit unleashes powerful forces that will stop at nothing to vindicate the Arabian kingdom. Witnesses are intimidated and some disappear, jurors are bribed, and a member of Brad’s own team may be attempting to sabotage the case.
As Brad navigates a maze of treachery and deception, he must gamble his case, his career, and the lives of those he loves–including brilliant co-counsel Leslie Conners–on the ability of his team to bring justice to one family, challenge the religious intolerance of a nation, and alter the course of international law.

Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Novel.......2006-12-17
It is unfortunate that Randy Singer is not more well known. He is an excellent writer.
'Directed Verdict' is really a superb novel that is very difficult to put down. It begins with severe religious persecution in Saudi Arabia by the Muttawa - the Saudi religious police. They have targeted an American missionary couple with unspeakable brutality.
Sarah Reed, who is the surviving wife of the couple, pushes for legal recourse in the States to expose their tactics and hopefully prevent more terror directed against Christians.
She hires legal ace Brad Carson and his team who are rather unconventional, but very tenacious. The story contains numerous plot twists. Every time I thought I had the story figured out, it took another turn.
This book is on a par with Grisham's best - his first few novels. Actually, this is even better than that as Singer addresses much more important issues - those with eternal significance.
I highly recommend this book. If you haven't read Randy Singer yet, you don't know what you're missing.
Move Over Grisham!.......2006-10-26
I began this book with a bit of skepticism because I just didn't see how a Christian legal novel could compare with the likes of John Grisham. Not only am I surprised at the quality of this novel, but I am surprised I have never heard of Randy Singer before now. Directed Verdict is right up there with anything Grisham has ever written, maybe even better.
Great writers write what they know, and Randy Singer knows the law. This story takes you into the depths of international law, and Singer is thorough without ever being dry or boring. Your heart will go out to missionary Sarah Reed as her and her family face severe persecution for their unwavering faith. Lawyer Brad Carson takes Sarah's case and files an unprecedented civil rights suit against the nation of Saudi Arabia and her persecutors.
Singer's novel is full of unexpected twists and turns and riveting courtroom scenes. There are themes of forgiveness and faith all throughout and even a love story. I was hooked from page one and I couldn't put it down. If you love legal thrillers you'll love Randy Singer.
One of the best novels I've ever read........2006-08-21
If you asked me a few months ago who my favorite novelists were, my answer would be Allistair MacLean and Frank Peretti. After reading this novel, Randy Singer has joined the list. And this is the only novel I've read of his . . . for the time being.
My wife and I are area representatives of Voice Of The Martyrs. Thus, when the book opens with religious persecution in Saudi Arabia, it had my attention. But this book is primarily a court-room drama, and it succeeds here.
Singer has the credentials of being a member of the North American Mission Board (Southern Baptist), and being a former attorney with the American Center Of Law And Justice, founded by Jay Sekulow. (Sekulow wrote a promotional review for this book, and he makes a cameo early in the book, probably an inside joke.)
Some of the plot is predictable. There were two characters that, when introduced, I knew would be major players in the book. I will forgive that. He makes up for it with a plot with twists and turns.
The best part of the book for me, though, were the characters. They came across as believable, flesh and blood people, easy to either love or loathe. One thing that I like, as well, is that some of the antagonists are not true villains; they have a human side which shows through.
Even though I've read a Grisham novel (and two movies based on his novels), and saw several Perry Mason episodes, this book has given me an idea of aspects of law I did not know before. The title itself is an example. For those who are as unfamiliar with law as I am may not know that a directed verdict is one made by the judge as opposed to the jury.
This was Singer's first novel, as well as the first I've read. I will guarantee you, though, that this is not the last one I'll read.
Brilliant writing debut.......2006-07-19
Sarah Reed, a longtime missionary in Saudi Arabia, is forced into an early return to the United States. Her husband's tortuous death at the hands of the muttawa, the Saudi Arabian religious police, provokes her untimely return. Allegations of cocaine abuse by her husband lead to a rejection of the life insurance claim, which in turn directs Sarah into the law office of Brad Carson and Associates. Rather than suing the life insurance company, Carson persuades Reed to take legal action against members of the muttawa and the nation of Saudi Arabia. Drawing from the testimony of Reed and other members of her underground church, Carson and his assistants attempt to bring attention to the corrupt ways of both the muttawa and the Saudi Arabian government. But the case is not so clear-cut. As the story develops, the already intricate plot thickens, leaving the reader wondering just how much more twisted and tumultuous things can get.
Randy Singer has his finger squarely on the pulse of the federal justice system, as he leads the reader through the lives of several key characters at once. As a lawyer with a dozen years of experience, Singer shows remarkable accuracy in his descriptions of court proceedings. His portrayal of the persecuted church (in Saudi Arabia) will help North American readers to further appreciate their religious freedom. Action, suspense, drama, comedy, and even romance, place this book near the top of a legal thriller lover's lis
Powerful!.......2006-05-24
Incredible legal thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat! This was the first Randy Singer book that I've had the pleasure of reading and it certainly won't be the last. The characters were well developed and interesting and the story was thought provoking and clever with twists that made the book hard to put down. Singer does an excellent job of crafting a story that stirs the emotions of the reader. The diverse characters were memorable and easy to relate to.

Book Description
Green Knight Publishing's first original release is a collection of stories exploring the downfall of Arthur's realm. What brought about the end of the dream? The answers offered by these tales range from a madman's obsession with justice, to an innocent jest gone horribly wrong, to the pervasive, yet subtle flaws in the idea of Camelot itself. From Dark Ages squalor to fantastic splendor, The Doom of Camelot presents a wide range of tones and styles, with stories from such notable authors as Phyllis Ann Karr, Cherith Baldry, Catherine Wells, Elaine Cunningham, Ed Greenwood, Mike Ashley, and others.
Customer Reviews:
a wonderful read.......2005-12-09
These stories were a delightful excursion into the Arthurian mythos, exploring the possibilities, characters, and settings surrounding the legend's end. The stories include some really creative interpretations, strong characterization, and are steeped in the flavor of medieval tales--worthy successors to the original legends. There are moments of pure poetry, as well as plenty of adventure and even humor.

Written for caregivers as well as the dying, Handbook for Mortals is an excellent resource for anyone facing the end of life. Authors Joanne Lynn, M.D., and Joan Harrold, M.D., offer sensitive and practical advice for the ambiguous final stage of a life-threatening illness--when hope for a recovery is waning and the patient and family members are turning toward a different horizon, that of accepting and supporting an imminent death. For the most part, the authors focus on physical concerns such as pain management, artificial feeding, and an especially poignant passage about assisted suicide.
Because of their backgrounds, the authors are also comfortable discussing the emotional complexities of dying, such as offering advice on giving and receiving forgiveness and resolving conflicts in close relationships. (Lynn is director of the Center to Improve Care of the Dying at George Washington University and Harrold is medical director of a Pennsylvania hospice.) The handbook offers many sidebars, including "Words to Try" when speaking with a sick person: instead of saying, "Dad, you are going to be just fine," the authors suggest saying, "Dad, are there some things that worry you?" Proceeds from the sale of the book support Americans for Better Care of the Dying, a national charitable organization devoted to improving care for the last stage of life. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Handbook for Mortals is warmly addressed to all those who wish to approach the final years of life with greater awareness of what to expect and greater confidence about how to make the end of our lives a time for growth, comfort, and meaningful reflection. Written by Drs. Joanne Lynn and Joan Harrold and a variety of experts from nursing, hospice, counseling, and the arts, this book provides equal measures of practical information and gentle insight. Readers will learn what decisions they will need to face, where to look for help, how to ease pain and other symptoms, what to expect with specific diseases, and how the health-care system operates. Equally important to this practical information are the personal stories included here of how people have come to terms with dying, faced their fears, and made important choices. From down-to-earth advice on how to talk to your doctor to inspiring quotes from such writers as W. H. Auden, Jane Kenyon, and others, Handbook for Mortals encompasses the needs of both the body and the spirit in our final years.

Handbook For Mortals.......2007-09-19
As the wife of a young man dying of cancer, this book was an incredible aid to getting through each day and learning what to expect. That was 15 years ago. My sister-in-law faced the same situation recently when her husband was diagnosed, and I bought the book for her. She said she couldn't put it down until she read every page. We need to have that helping hand when we're hurting. This book is it!
Must Have Resource for Caregivers and those who love them..........2007-05-14
This is a must have resource for all of us. It is a practical book that helps you with End of Life concerns and how to plan for them. Far too many people wait until a crisis to make desperate choices that could be avoided. It is difficult to live with the choices that we make in crisis. Many times a crisis situation does not give you the opportunity to discuss critical issues with your family before the crisis occurs. This book will give you the necessary tools to discuss your wants and wishes for the living of your years.
A good guide for daily living with or without a serious illness.......2006-03-26
I have owned this book for several years and decided to use it as an adjunct teaching tool for those training to become hospice volunteers. Every person in the group gave a high rating to this book. I will continue to use this book in future volunteer training classes. Eileen Urquhart, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, Visiting Nurse Association Hospice of Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Handbook for Mortals.......2003-03-01
I found this book days after leaving the hospital with a two year prognosis for a misdiagnosed illness. My head was spinning. I was making lists of questions and to do lists for leaving my 2 young children. Finding this book was a wonderful gift. It answered my questions and provided a realistic outlook for what to expect of a terminal condition. The book provides sample statements for calling your relatives and helps you to prepare for your doctor appointments. I visited a doctor today and I led the session and all of my questions were addressed before the exam occurred. This book should be recommended to all diagnosed with a terminal illness. Highly recommended book!
Very useful in a difficult time.......2002-04-17
I wish I had picked up this book earlier in my step-father's illness. Very useful for those who are facing illness or who love someone who is very ill, telling you the kinds of things to expect and ways of dealing them.

for the gourmet cook.......2006-03-22
A nice-looking book and I'm sure the recipes are very good but they are just not conducive to everyday cooking. I was looking for recipies to bring more fiber and nutrition into my family's lives. Though the beans will surely do that..the recipes often have many unusual or expensive ingredients that I don't even know where to find (e.g., whole black mustard seeds, nasturtium flowers, nigella seeds, Madeira, 'confit of duck legs-?? etc). Other recipes require things like toasted coriander seeds, toasted allspice, etc. that take a lot of time to prepare. It's clearly written by a chef for other chefs or people who can afford the expensive ingredients, have access to gourmet food stores or to spend all day in the kitchen...not for the everyday cook. I gave it 2* - not because it's a bad cookbook...it's just not very usable to me...and unfortunately, will probably sit on my shelf unopened most of the time. =(
Delightful, adaptable and TASTY!.......2005-07-02
I happened upon this book at a promotion in my local bookstore. Since my husband is a bean-a-holic, and the sample recipes the author had prepared were delicious, I decided to buy it.
I've made half a dozen of the recipes so far, and I've been delighted with every one. I note that another reviewer complains that the recipes call for dry beans... well, you CAN use canned if necessary. And although Ms. Green tells you which sort of pots, etc, would be ideal, you can certainly use whatever cookware you have on hand.
The black turtle bean pate with tequila is divine. I tasted Aliza Green's version at the book signing and promptly tried to make my own. Mine was *almost as good and was gobbled up by my guests... I *will try again!
I hope you'll consider this book if you love beans and other legumes. It's a delight. And many recipes are vegetarian or have a vegetarian option, for those who don't eat meat.
Enjoy, and as Ms. Green signed in my copy - Bean Appetit!
Assumes you have the entire day to cook.......2005-01-31
This cook book is not designed for a busy, active person. The author dismisses the use of canned beans. Every recipe requires that you begin by soaking and cooking dried beans (an 8 hour process). It also assumes that you have access to specialized cooking equipment, like earthenware pots and paella pans. The one recipe that I made completely from scratch (including carmelizing garlic and fire roasting tomatoes) was definitely NOT worth the effort - it just wasn't that good. While I really like to cook, I don't have the time that this cook book demands.

Informing owners and common behavior and habits, from vanity to seed gorging to excessive talking this amusing book answers common parakeet questions in a fun and entertaining manner.
Customer Reviews:
Quick entertaining read, excellent for children........2006-07-14
Book provides some useful information in an entertaining, humorous format. Very good for children, and adults with only a minor interest in the behavior of parakeets. Not an in-depth guide, but a lot of interesting information packed into a 15-30 minute read. Highly recommended.
Not even worth half a star.......2006-04-12
This book is a total waste of time and money. It tells you nothing more and considerably less than a $2.00 pamphlet like book from any variety store. The author seems to think they are very cute and clever. They are wrong! Don't waste your money on this thing.
Fun and cute book!.......2005-12-27
This book has adorable and hilarious illustrations. While the info is true, I would recommend this for beginning budgie owners only. The book was a little smaller than I expected, but all in all, it's a fun book that can help answer questions you may have had for a long time. Happy Reading! :-)
All the answers in half the time.......2004-05-10
If you've ever had a bird, you know they can be, well, odd birds! I was in the pet store the other day and saw this book. Got it on a whim because we have two Parakeets. My wife and I sat on our couch with it and went "bird watching" for a while. The book is so right on. Now if I could just get a book called Why Does Your Wife Do That?
Very Cute Book!.......2004-05-10
This book is very cute and well written. There's just enough info here, but it doesn't try to tell you every single thing about parakeets, though if you love parakeets you'll get a kick out of the illustrations. I have another parakeet book by this author and that one has more info in it. Anyway, I really liked this book!

GORGEOUS flower ideas for the bride.......2006-09-06
You'll get beautiful ideas for your bouquets, for the mothers' flowers, for decor and spotlight pieces. Maria McBride Mellinger has created a timeless collection of gorgeous images and explanations that will help you create your own perfectly personalized floral pieces.
This book would be a terrific engagement gift, as well.
A True Classic.......2006-04-08
Keep in Mind that this book is going on 15 years and it is still relevant and beautiful. This book has been part of my collection since 1995. I work in the industry and still draw from this book. It is a thin book, but it has a strong impact.
Bridal Flowers.......2005-10-06
Great work - I'm a florist and I am constantly gathering information for my artistry.
Her ideas are classic, yet fresh.......2003-09-05
As a professional bridal consultant, I keep an extensive library of wedding related books on hand to help my brides design their own weddings. Ms. McBride's Bridal Flowers is one of my favorites. It is full of wonderful ideas - not just the traditional "must have" wedding flowers such as bouquets & boutonnieres, but the out-of-the-ordinary (but inspiring) boas, decorated lampposts & gilded calla lilies. Ms. McBride shows that flowers are for more than just being carried or worn. The large color photos are fantastic. So many other books have little or no photos, or hand drawn diagrams that leaves the reader wondering. Ms. McBride's book lets you see exactly what she is talking about. It doesn't claim to be a how-to book, but perfect to take along when visiting your floral designer.

A "Blind Lane" at Amsterdam.......2000-09-07
"PD from Wildwood NJ" could not have written it better! But I protest and quietly resign Sprunger as another "intellectual historian" writing for himself. Reform, renewal and religious ferment seem is what Keith Sprunger is good at--I should know...because I have endured "The Meeting of Dutch Anabaptists and English Brownists" from "The Contentious Triangle." "KEITH L. SPRUNGER ('62) is Oswald H. Wedel Professor of History at Bethel College (Kansas). He presented "The Printing Press and the Reformation of Religion," in Paris in 1997, and he published "Puritan Church Architecture and Worship in a Dutch Context" in Church History (March, 1997)."--History at Illinois
Dutch Puritanism.......2000-03-28
As with so much of today's new informational technology, this site is a mixed blessing. It gives reviewers the opportunity to impart either useful information or misleading twaddle. Unfortunately, the comments from "PD from Wildwood NJ" about Professor Sprunger's "Dutch Puritanism" fall into the latter category.
As a specialist in the field, I can say with assurance that this book is the most comprehensive and best-researched work yet written about this subject. It aims at imparting new information gleaned from years of study in Anglo-Dutch archives and setting it in a proper context.
Professor Sprunger provides brief social and religious summaries at appropriate intervals, but he generally assumes that readers will come to the subject already armed with considerable background knowledge. Any expert scanning the footnotes and bibliography can immediately appreciate the depth and breadth of his contribution.
This book is extremely important for anyone working in the fields of Anglo-Dutch Puritanism and American colonial history.
A very poor read; uninspired--this history is bunk..........1999-12-04
Keith Springer chairs the Bethel College History Department at Bethel College, Kansas. His copious attention to the mundane is an instant depressant. Here is yet another attempt to chronicle the history of the church in such a way as to forcefully arrive at preconceived conclusions. Keith Sprunger always fails to give the reader the appropriate depth that comes with a concept of social setting. There is not one anectdote to recommend. Sprunger gives no dimension to an exhausted paradigm.

from fundamentals to politics.......2000-04-28
This is a great find for anyone interested in the more theoretical underpinnings of graphic design and typography. From Foucault to Derrida, the authors sample a number of approaches towards the "why" behind the design of printed materials. Graphic designers will find great introductory resources on topics such as deconstructivism and the intellectual archaeology of design, whereas more politically minded souls will enjoy essays on race and sexuality in graphic design and advertising. A nicely done, eclectic reader.
Marshall McLuhan, what are you doin'?.......1997-09-20
Ever wonder why those little airport symbols for men's and women's restrooms look the way they do? Shouldn't the female symbol be sitting down?
This book helps explain how those supposedly universal symbols evolved, along with many other elements of design that we encounter everyday as we negotiate society. This is a rather unique compilation of articles related to the history, practice and science of design in myriad forms and media. Why do printed words look the way they do? Many of us have never really thought about it much, I'm sure. But Lupton and Miller reveal in readable and entertaining prose that design choices are integral to the content in visual media, from newspaper columns to advertising billboards. The book is worth the price just for the guided tour through legendary examples of subliminal eroticism in advertising. Sex on the Rocks -- who'd a thunk it?

Customer Reviews:
Good, but could be better........2001-09-25
Gosling's book is thorough, but not complete. He does a good job of presenting and discussing the basics of scientific poster presentations: from definitions to composition. However, the book would be considerably better if there were a chapter dedicated to software and computer generated methods of creating poster presentations. The ommission of this leaves the book a decade behind. Still, for the areas that he covers, it is a useful guide and I recommended it for both scientists and students.
Scientific Posters made Easy.......2000-06-16
This is an excellant book. Contains lots of useful information about the do's and don'ts of making a good scientific poster. A great deal of information about basic layout that is clearly presented. Just what the beginner needs. Even the most experienced graphic designer would find this material useful. Towards the back of the book is a chapter on "Common Poster Design Blunders". This chapter contains many critique's of both badly designed posters and well designed posters. It is always good to see real eaxmples.
