5 out of 5 stars Lillian Byrd, Crime Solver.......2005-11-14

Lillian would approve that title, just as she would like to be like her hero Calico Jones, but Lillian is grounded in reality, at least sometimes. And if you have to be grounded, then reality is the better place to be stuck, right?
This series is delightful and original. Not many freelance crime solvers have pet rabbits who accompany them on many of their adventures. It is also very well written: an interview with the suspect's sister is both hilarious and touching. Lillian digs deeper, goes farther, risks more than before. But then, she is starting from a different place, a little lower down on the scale, a little closer to real desperation. Lillian may come out of this one a little harder than she was before. Elizabeth Sims owes us at least one more Lillian Byrd mystery, after what happens to Lillian in this one. You just have to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Superman As Batman and Vise Versa.......2004-05-18

There is a hard-to-find Elseworlds issue out there. This one is called Speeding Bullets and is told by Superman's closest associates. The main idea is that they are convinced that he is the man he is because of where his ship landed, his parents, the influence of Lois Lane and other factors. Only this combination could result in superman. Right?

Kal-El's craft crashed and spotted by a childless couple who returned to their house and treated the boy as their own son. These people are Dr. and Martha Wayne. Kal-El manages to burn the mugger who kills his parents, but not before he discovers he is bullet proof. He represses the memories and eventually becomes a heartless vigilante known as Batman.

Bruce Wayne comes out of hiding and enters the newspaper business by hiring the best; out of work Perry White, Lois Lane and others. The first big story is Lex Luthor's move to Gotham.

Lex Luthor gets to play the part of three separate villains all rolled into one but I won't tell you who or how the heartless Batman becomes Superman, but it was a very entertaining story.

4 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight of Steel.......2004-03-14

Warning: This review includes spoilers to the material reviewed. If you hope to read this some day, be careful how you read my review.

I first came across SUPERMAN: SPEEDING BULLETS in a newsagent not long after seeing the third BATMAN movie and developing a serious Batman addiction. It looked fantastic. I didn't get it. This proved to be a mistake - I never saw it again.

Until about four days ago, in a small Adelaide collectors store - when, prompted by years of vague, half-memories and a sense that it would have been a great purchase, I snapped it up for about AUS$10.00. Am I glad I did? You bet. It's by no means perfect, but it's an excellent work, and proof that the memory doesn't always cheat. It's easily one of my best purchases.

The Elseworlds plot is intriguing; what if the baby Kal-El had landed outside Gotham, and had been raised not by the Kents, but by the Waynes? And suppose that baby, traumatized by witnessing the murder of his parents and then frying the murderer with his heat vision, grew into a bitter, obsessive Bruce Wayne, who decides to bring terror to those who bring terror to others as the Batman? And suppose, in his quest for justice, he locks horns not only Lex Luthor (who is hiding a dark, terrible secret of his own in this work), but his true-love, Lois Lane (the narrator of this story)?

For the most part, despite the cramped length, the writers have an immense amount of fun contrasting the two heroes who represent polar opposites of the D.C range within the same person. The superpowered Batman seems far darker, more obsessive and a demonstration of the kind of damage someone really obsessed with dishing out justice to evildoers can do withsuper-strength and heat-vision. Seeing this is pretty damn fantastic - I've always thought that Batman was cooler than Superman, and seeing a superpowered Batman is just awesome. In an interesting comparison, his alter-ego Bruce Wayne is strangely warmer and slightly klutzier than his proper continuity counter-part - shades of Clark Kent coming into play, perhaps? The Bruce Wayne / Lois Lane relationship is also interesting and slightly touching, with the possibility for more depth than the actual D.C comics allow, showing Lois Lane not only as the Man of Steel's heart, but also, in this universe, the comfort to his tortured soul.

It's not perfect -the attempt to meld Lex Luthor and the Joker into one character is somewhat awkward (couldn't Luthor have just hired the Joker to deal with Wayne, thus including both?). And the ending is something of a cop-out - especially for those, like me, who think Batman's cooler than Superman any day of the week. And really, it could have done with being extended into a mini-series - there's so much potential for growth here that, really, one slim comic book would never cut it. A mini-series, however, would have rivalled SUPERMAN: RED SON as being a classic work.

But if you do happen to come across a copy of this, don't make the mistake my younger self made and pass up on it. Get it. You won't regret it.

    3 out of 5 stars Readable.......1999-07-19

This is not a Superman story, that's for sure. The dark settings of Gotham City, the storyline, the background, all point to a Batman flick.

Nevertheless, the plot is interesting, to say the least. The idea of Lois Lane narrating the story is a good one, and well exploited. However, the attempt to merge the personalities of Lex Luthor and the Joker falls flat on its face....it is just a no-go, considering how different the two personalities are in any case.

The book is sporadically good, but has the potential to be much better. It fails to tackle the problems Bruce Wayne (aka Superman, in this case) would have experienced as a child, in terms of his superpowers.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to go out and buy this comic book, but it is definitely worth one read. And it does set the mind thinking about 'what-if' things had been as portrayed by this book.

1 out of 5 stars Good up to a point........1999-03-23

I have to agree with the reader who wanted to slam this book into a wall. Damn PC endings. Batman is one of the more primal forces in the DC Universe, an unstoppable engine for justice. Given access to Kryptonian powers? Makes for pretty chilling stuff. But vital stuff too. This story isn't Superman's, despite his name on the cover. The first half of the book is one of the most intriguing set ups I've seen, and then they totally fumble the ball with this Lois Lane as Luke Skywalker and Batman as Vader. In a sensible story, Batman would have toned down his senseless beatings, relied more on the psychology of fear as he does in the "normal" Gotham City. What's more terrifying: a Batman that can juggle tanks or one who can see and hear everything in Gotham? Yeah, so this book is only for those with rose-colored glasses. For the rest, avoid. The let down is so evident, you'll be beside yourself with fury.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Wayne, a Batman of Steel?.......1998-10-18

Earlier reviews depicted this story as a smarmy, watered-down portrayal of what might have happened if Bruce Wayne was the true Last Son of Krypton. But those reviews are wrong. This is not only comic book fiction, but a fictionalized account of fiction. DeMatteis achieves his goal of showing the reader what could happen if Kal-El became Batman, and he does it with respectful grace and dignity. Of course, the Lex Luther/Joker combination was a bit trite, but anything's better than the Sinestro/Joker combo in "Darkest Knight."

The Dark Knight Strikes Again is Frank Miller's follow-up to his hugely successful Batman: the Dark Knight Returns, one of the few comics that is widely recognized as not only reinventing the genre but also bringing it to a wider audience.Set three years after the events of The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again follows a similar structure: once again, Batman hauls himself out of his self-imposed retirement in order to set things right. However, where DKR was about him cleaning up his home city, Gotham, DKSA has him casting his net much wider: he's out to save the world. The thing is, most of the world doesn't realize that it needs to be saved--least of all Superman and Wonder Woman, who have become little more than superpowered enforcers of the status quo. So, the notoriously solitary Batman is forced to recruit some different superpowered allies. He also has his ever-present trusty sidekick, Robin, except that he is a she, and she is calling herself Catwoman. Together, these super-friends uncover a vast and far-reaching conspiracy that leads to the President of the United States (Lex Luthor) and beyond.

"I wanted to write a book to help all the creative dreamers make their creative dreams even more real....I have a lot to share about struggle and success, and the long flat places in between. My experiences as a recovering procrastinator and perfectionist give me a keen understanding of how they work to delay creative dreams (and why that's sometimes a good thing). I admit my 'splendid imperfections' because I know that my mistakes and stumblings can be of use to others."
            -- From the Introduction

SARK (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) has lived one of her creative dreams by transforming herself from a struggling artist into a bestselling author, artist, and creative spiritualist. She is actively working with her other dreams, and she tells readers that making dreams real is not only about making dreams come true but also about living with all that is real about life -- the disappointments, frustrations, progress, quitting, and fulfillment. Now she tells readers how they can live their dreams in a guide that is practical, inspirational, realistic, and as inventive as only SARK can be. Whether your dream is to write a book or plant a garden, open a bed and breakfast or get a degree, help children with cancer or star in a musical, SARK guides you step-by-step on a journey toward making your dream REAL.

Are you wondering just what your creative dream is? SARK puts you in a "dream activator" state of mind and helps you figure it out. Are you lost in the Land of No? SARK can help you work with your fear and negativity, live with and transform procrastination and perfectionism, communicate with inside and outside critics, and work with inertia. Do you have a dream but it seems overwhelmingly impossible? SARK's famous microMOVEment technique will help you make your creative dream journey in tiny yet powerful steps. Need inspiration? Read the stories of others who are making their creative dreams real. Having difficulty fitting your dream into your real life? Let SARK show you how to think differently about time and find resources in unexpected places and people.

To begin, choose one of two tables of contents: one for the logical or linear mind that follows the steps in order or one for the more abstract thinker who would prefer to play the system like a game. No matter which path your journey follows, you'll encounter SARK's whimsical humor and tender understanding of human foibles, extensive resource sections, and lots of exercises that will help you get unstuck, activate creativity, and put plans into juicy action. Make Your Creative Dreams Real is the all-in-one book for everyone who has ever wanted to live a more deeply creative and satisfying life.

...it's anything that you want in life...from a house, to a family to being recognized creatively. SARK gives us a step by step guide that gives you micromovements to work towards your goals over the course of a year....in this book she had so much to say that she did not write it in her traditional way that has brought her much acclaim. instead she worked with the publisher to bring your a book that is still not in your typical form...it is beautiful, inspirational and helpful. thanks sark for all your hard work and for giving the publisher a great challenge.

            5 out of 5 stars Yipeeeee.......2007-03-01

I love this book. I love anything Sark creates. She has a beautiful creative mind. She can take you places and make you laugh. She lets you know its ok to be yourself. Lazy or alive. Just be yourself. The pages of her books are so sparkley (is there such a word). SARK sparkles. I wait for her new books so i can laugh daily.

Of all of SARK's wonderful books, this is my least favorite and I have them all. Of course, anything from SARK is worth consideration so don't let me stop you. She is so wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book as intro into Susan's work .........2006-05-13

I have been receiving Susan's e-letters for a few years and own three of her books. I think this is a wonderful book to purchase to get a whole picture of what she is all about. I enjoyed doing the worksheets even though that is not my thing. I now operate thinking 'macro', not only in general tasks to do, but in my professional life as a designer (to make deadlines). While reading through this book the first time, I felt like SARK knew me personally and was writing about 'my' faults. This is how close it all hit home.

Excellent first SARK book for anyone who needs a nudge to straighten up their daily routine or wants help to get mentally organized. Then it's up to you to follow through and make it work :o)

            5 out of 5 stars Motivational & Insprirational!!.......2006-02-23

Sark's method of teaching and motivating you to follow your dreams is unlike anything else I've ever read. She encourages lots of napping and taking tiny steps toward your dreams which she coins Micromovements. Sark writes in a style that is easy to follow but makes you want to continue to read more!! I highly recommend anything by her!

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook.......2006-12-05

If you can only have one cookbook of African food in your collection, this is the one I recommend. I have had it for many years, after finding it in a library. I can't even count how many times I made the Jollof Rice recipe in this book - I've made it following the recipe explicitly, I've had chicken as the only meat, shrimp as the only meat, no meat - and it's been perfect. The recipes from Eastern Africa I know are authentic as I shared the book with a native Tanzanian while I studied Swahili, and she said that the recipes are very similar to hers. Same with a native Nigerian; in fact, she borrowed my book to make Egusi soup (Egusi is a gourd/melon whose seeds are used ground up as a thickener, which adds it's own flavor)when she misplaced her own recipe. I have made a lot of the recipes, but after the Jollof Rice, the Kuku na Nazi (koo-koo nah Nah-zee - which means Chicken in Coconut in Swahili) is my favorite recipe. I also make the Garum Masala recipe in the book. If you need a recipe for curry, there are several in the book including curry for fruit and curry for fish, and Berberé which is an Ethiopian Curry in liquid form.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Cookbook for the Adventurous Cook/Eater.......2005-02-12

The Africa News Cookbook is great. My child's school recently had a festival celebrating cultures around the world. My friend loaned me the cookbook and I shared the recipes with the other parents in the school. The recipes were fairly easy to make and the descriptions were easy to follow. We had a great time sampling food with an African influence and learned a lot in the process.
I am ordering my own copy!

5 out of 5 stars You've got to add this to your collection!.......2003-06-25

If only for one recipe, Doro Wat (my spelling may be off, I loaned out my copy and have never seen it again!) Chicken Stew, it is AMAZING!!!! Don't be put off by the ingredients (lots of cayenne pepper!) And making the aromatic Berbere, and Ghee yourself is a bit time consuming, but worth the experience and effort. (You can use your old coffee grinder) I made Doro Wat chicken for a party, after having some at a food festival and prying the recipe source from the chef, and it was the most well received dish I EVER served,(to a room of critics!) and I'm a great cook! Plus there are loads of other authentic African recipes,(from various countries) a cusine that gets over-looked too often!

5 out of 5 stars Don't pay attention to the editorial review! Buy this book!!.......2002-12-17

I've had this book for years and can truly testify that it's one of the best cook books in my collection which includes classics like the Joy of Cooking by the Rombauer mother and daughter, and Cookwise by Shirley Corriher.
"The AFrica News Cookbook" has delicious recipes, including curry chicken, fish stew, that come from all over the continent. The book illustrates the various cultural mixes that distinguish each region and country.
Plus, the recipes are easy to make.
More ingredients are available since the book was published in 1986. I can buy palm oil at my local grocery store and I live in Cleveland.
This book is worth the money, whether you're a novice (like I was when I bought it) or experienced with African cooking.

It differs completely from all the other porcelain books. And what is best: you can get any information quickly owing to the alphabetical listings. It would be wonderful to have such a reference book for each of the traditional European porcelain manufactories.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to Use .......2006-02-05

I visited Tuscany & the Marches & Florence this past September (2005) and bought this book to guide me through planning a garden tour itinerary. Initially I thought the book's organization structure of grouping gardens in chapters devoted to a particular region would be perfect. It turned out to be very hard to use and frustrating. In the chapters, the gardens are sometimes listed by their name and sometimes by their town so there is no logical order. Plus on the maps the gardens are numbered haphazardly - the five gardens around Padua should be numbered sequentially but instead they are 2,3,4 and 8&9. The info for each garden though is detailed and lists the hours, fees, who to contact for appointment only gardens and nearby sights. It also covers the history of the garden. If you are going to tour gardens in Tuscany and Florence I would highly recommend a book I found in Florence at the Boboli Gardens. It is "Gardens of Florence and Tuscany - A Complete Guide" by Mariachiara Pozzana and is published through Giunti. The ISBN is 8809020642. It has MANY more gardens listed, lots of history and information and is well organized. Translated into English.

5 out of 5 stars The serious garden lover's essential Italian garden guide.......2000-06-10

This is the most comprehensive guide I have found to Italian gardens open for visitng. Written by Penelope Hobhouse, one of England's foremost garden designers, it offers a real garden-lovers insight into what makes Italian gardens truly unique in style. The book is laid out in sections according to regions of Italy with good regional maps attached for route planning. Each garden has its own summary including an history of its design and later modifications, with elegant pictures, symbols denoting especial features, hours of opening, and other nearby sights worth visiting. "Gardens of Italy" is a slim volume perfect for not only plannning a comprehensive garden-accented trip from home but also small enough to carry whilst travelling. It is best used as an aide for advance planning rather than ad-hoc garden visits as many gardens are privately owned and visits are by appointment / advance arrangement only, a fact which Hobhouse notes in herforeword, but which after all is hardly her fault!

                          Book Description

Tim Rudman's first book on lith printing, a specialized method of photographic printing that produces strongly graphic or exquisitely delicate prints, is the canonical work on the subject. Inevitably, since it was first published in1998 there have been significant developments in both materials and techniques for traditional-lith printing, as well as the introduction of digital methods, used to simulate the process or expand its creative potential.

Now Rudman follows his classic text with an insightful and informative exploration of lith printing today. In addition to his own work, he includes many examples by leading practitioners from all over the world, who show the whole range of effects that can be achieved by adopting a wide variety of different approaches.

What's up, doc? Information scientist David M. Levy wants us to look at the documents that fill our lives, and his book Scrolling Forward is a thoughtful reflection on their near-omnipresence. Levy has the perfect résumé for this job--after getting his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1981, he took off for England to pursue the study of calligraphy and bookbinding. His love of books shows in his writing, which is rich with references and anecdotes from Walt Whitman to Woody Allen.

Drawing on examples as disparate as grocery store receipts, greeting cards, identity papers, and (of course) e-mail, Levy finds the common threads binding them together and explores how and why we use them in daily life. He looks at digitization closely, considering how speed, ease of editing, and potentially perfect copying changes our traditional considerations of documentation. Though he insists that he's looking at the present, not speculating about the future, it's hard to see how to avoid looking ahead after reading Scrolling Forward. --Rob Lightner

                          3 out of 5 stars What is a Document?.......2006-06-26

The first contribution of David Levy's book is to provide insight on what exactly IS a document. Like many common and prosaic words, the idea of what constitutes a document proves to be more than a little challenging. (Here are a couple of definitional challenges. On the one hand, an entire paper document can be reproduced as a single Web page or split into numerous parts and therefore many Web pages. Alternatively, an encyclopedia could be interpreted as a single document in one case, or each of its split-out articles as separate documents in their own right.)

Levy illustrates the real role of a document as an artifact of historical fixity by the case of the lowly sales receipt, dozens of which pepper our daily lives and go without notice. The paper receipt most often contains information on the amount, location, for what and time of the transaction, say for buying a deli sandwich. But through the Middle Ages and into the 1700s, witnesses (wit, to know) were required to vouch (act as a witness) that any economic transaction had indeed taken place. In other words, a simple and taken-for-granted paper document such as the sales receipt (or voucher) was a key enabler in oiling the wheels of commerce. A simple slip of paper replaces the hassle and expense of a physical witness.

Other documents, of course, enabled coordination of train schedules, ledger accounting and other economic benefits, plus, also of course, the spreading of ideas and knowledge, fiction and non-fiction. Levy tells similar stories regarding the emergence of greeting cards, post cards and the postal service.

Levy works best when he attempts to fulfill his stated aim of placing documents within their own cultural time and place. The story is thus anecdotal and diverse from Woody Allen's Annie Hall to Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. The result is this book is a surprisingly literal treatment given the author's doctoral background and then professorship in information science.

While attempts are made to relate this material to information and library science, indeed to the emergence of the digital age, the book ends up feeling fragmented and scattered, lacking an articulated thesis. For example, no mention whatsoever is made of Elizabeth Eisenstein's 1979 classic book, "The Printing Press as an Agent of Change," which postulated the role of written documents in the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution, among other historical epochs. The concluding chapters ramble from earthquakes to car advertising to "existential/religious perspectives." After a promising start, I felt like the air had been let out of the balloon by book's end.

I recommend this book to others mostly because of its episodic keen insights, though more of the mark could have been hit. Finally, I should note that any book with documents as its subject should take the time to include an index -- shame, shame.

Three years after publication, the march of technology has not made this book obsolete. Levy correctly identified the sore spots that technological change has rubbed on our sense of civilized society, and pointed out to what degree the problems were realized 100 years ago. Previous reviewers complained about pointlessness, but I appreciate Levy's many small points as well as his few large ones. However, I wouldn't buy a copy; this is the kind of book that public libraries are good for.

5 out of 5 stars Is paper to disappear?.......2004-06-03

The changing face of documents and images in the digital age is considered in a title which covers all kinds of documents and the changes they face from the digital world; from recipes and letters to business memos and other writings. Is the book doomed? Is paper to disappear? Scrolling Forward: Making Sense Of Documents In The Digital Age by David M. Levy examines documents of all kinds as they relate to culture, history and technological changes.

5 out of 5 stars Documentation for our times.......2004-02-25

This meditation on the changing role of documents in our lives is simply marvelous--wide-ranging, literate and even profound. Levy is no Luddite--quite to the contrary--but his essays here will change the way you think about the digital revolution. I might add that the prose is a model of what writing of this kind should be: modest, inviting and free of academic jargon or posturing. Nicely done.

Working at PARC in research is something a lot of scientists might dream of. Lots of money and time to burn, living in the beautiful hills of Palo Alto. I used to run my bicycle around there in the morning. Mr. Levy had probably fun writing the book, but I did not have fun reading it. Obviously the author read a lot, knows a lot, but does not get to the point. The story gets lost in a mythical view about paper and information. I have to commit, I made it only to one third of the book, then I gave up, but hey, I don't work in research.
                          An excellent book about Information in the internet age: Die Bibliothek der Zukunft from Dieter E. Zimmer; unfortunately not in English;

                            Product Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "digital printing" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                                Product Description

This study covers the world outlook for digital printing across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

I had taken Mr Bergslands class at TVI around 1998-99 where this book was 'the' text book. It covers lots of basic concepts and covers a wide range of topics. From hardware to software, usage and techniques. As a result much of the book is years out of date (1996). Look elsewhere.

Projects and exercises are included in each chapter. The author uses a large number of illustrations, making the introduction of new information more understandable for those new to the field.

Chapters covering design, history, fonts, graphics, software and the mechanics of printing offer guidance to all who must produce a printed piece, regardless of their experience level. Each section of the book is liberally illustrated, giving visual detail to the text. All aspects of production are covered in great depth (and with a humorous edge!) including the new areas of web design and pdf workflow. The stepped illustrations showing how to "adjust" a poor scan and the presentation of a photograph printed with different line screens were particularly enlightening to me. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who must produce a project for print or web.
