Book Description
The overall aim of this book is to provide objective information on the technical possibilities and limitations of the use of electronic identification and monitoring with animals. Basic principles of data transfer via radio waves are explained, so that users are able to optimize their own applications, or to evaluate devices which are currently available on the market. Examples of applications are described in detail, including extensions with electronic monitoring. These applications include animal husbandry (e.g. feeding stations, oestrus detection, disease prevention), and the transport and slaughtering of animals, including integral chain quality control. Some applications within the field of companion, zoo, laboratory, and wildlife animals are described. Examples of cost-benefit analysis are discussed in detail in relation to farm animal applications. Finally, currently available equipment is reviewed. The book is aimed at a wide range of animal scientists, zoologists, and applied engineers.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2005-05-17
Teaches the basics of Taxidermy, good for beginners. Tells some useful tricks and tools that you can use to help you get done with the mounts faster and easier. It is very detailed and has lots of pictures to illustrate the points and show you what the task you are doing should look like.

One of the best books available on the subject.......2006-08-05
Dr.Abernethy covers all of the bases on Weibull functions as well as some very down to earth commentary on Weibull's history. The usefulness of Weibull functions are explained clearly with good examples of real-world applications. If you are involved in any way with Weibull analysis or life stress analysis, this book is a must have for your bookshelf/desk/lab.
New Weibull Handbook.......2005-10-10
Very happy with this book. It arrived in very good time and in excellent condition.
Key phrase: "together with the software".......2003-12-01
The book has some interesting and powerful information. However, without the software to crunch the numbers, this book is worthless from a practical standpoint.
Practicioners in the field will find it invaluable!.......2002-07-11
If you are a reliability practioner in any field (mechanical, electonic, etc.) in most indutries(automobile, aerospace, powerplants, chipmakers, off-highway, medical) you will find the tools given in this text to be helpful in solving REAL problems you encounter. This text is not for the casual reader, it takes in depth reading and simulatneous use of the tools provided to master the subject. The text and tools have been developed after over 30 years of Weibull use IN THE FIELD. This use has been brought together by the author from the industries and areas mentioned. Terrific job!

Customer Reviews:
outdated.......2007-07-30
most of the photos are old and not very nice - missing are common names and explanation for each genus of common features - behaviour...
I don't reco.
Great reference book, but must know how to use it.......2006-03-11
This book is not for lazy people , have a lot of fishes and information about fishes on it, but you must learn to read this book, because the info is on simbols and the reference is in the index.
Once you know how to use this book, it can be of great help identifying fish ,their origins, foods, care, and needs.
All i have to say is, if you want a book about fishes, and want to learn a lot about them, this is the book that you are looking for.
Nice additional reference, but can't be primary.......2005-05-05
This book has endless pictures and drawings of fish. Many pictures are good, although there are plenty that appear as taken long ago with inferior film and recently scanned. It is a great to find a particular fish, especially if coloration is different. Here, many times there are many different pictures for a single fish to show differences which is very nice.
The book has icons regarding lighting, salinity, foods, etc., for each picture. The icons could o a better job showing compatibility or aggressiveness.
What this book does not have is a description that is very helpful to the aquariust such as "this fish will eat your hermit crabs", "this fish becomes a bully to conspecifics", "this fish may nibble corals" on either the family or species level. The short rundown on each family is not enough.
By all means buy this book to increase your collection, but if it is your first fish book to make selection choices, I suggest you look elsewhere and that is not even considering the price.
Major Help for Newcomers.......2002-10-29
This book was probably designed for intermediate to advanced marine hobbyists. However, I bought it just getting into the hobby and it was invaluable for one reason. It shows every known fish, and as another reviewer says, talks about sociability, smallest tank size (big one), and diet. What was most useful for me was to help me design my ultimate tank as far as colors, types, compatability, etc without ever spending a dime. Well worth the money just for the comprehensiveness.
Complete Disappointment.......2002-05-10
I read the other reviews before I bought the book, and I can't help but wonder if we're talking about the same book. Yes, it has really nice pictures, and yes, it covers a tremendous range of fishes, but the information is way too general to be at all useful. I will admit that my opinions result from being an aquarium owner, but I simply don't see any practical applications here for most of the general public unless you just want to see pretty pictures.
For those who are considering buying this book, I seriously suggest that, if at all possible, give it a quick read and find out what you're truly getting.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference for Marine Fish species.......2005-08-04
This book is an excellent tool for Specie reference. But iam disapointed with the setup section. This could have been a bit more comprehensive with more quality diagrams and more aquascaping options.
MIXED FEELINGS - TOUGH FOR BEGINNER.......2001-04-24
The strength of this book is the number of color photographs identifying an amazing number of fishes. The shots are clear and well taken. It is a strong, thick, well illustrated reference book. However, I believe this book is difficult to use for someone who just starts saltwater tank. First, all the fishes are listed in their scientific names (not the names given in the store). Therefore, you first have to look at an index table of "store names" which translates into scientific names, then look into the scientfic names' index table to find the page. It can take lots of time at first. Not very convenient. Second, there is absolutely no text about any fish - only symbols that give you information about food, environment... I guess that's why this work is called the "mini-atlas". The problem of using only symbols is that the information can be subjective and lack context. For example, the book does not recommend any trigger for a novice. If you have only fishes and no corals in the tank, why not? They are the least likely to die and will live long as long as you get other fishes they can get along with. In summary, this is a good reference book but do not expect to find much specific information in it.
One of the best resources for the marine fish keeper........2000-12-14
This is one of my favorite books. It provides information and more importantly photos on nearly 2000 fish. The information gives you the basics about each fish, how big they get, what they eat, are they agressive, etc. But the best aspect is the photos. With over 1900 photos it is the first book I go to when I want to look up a fish. Or when I'm thinking of what to put in that empty tank I'll often browse through this book looking for neat fish.
This book gives you the most for your money!

This is a must have reference for both beginner and advanced.......1999-05-16
This reference allowed me to find compatible species for my reef tank. Many aquarium stores have staff that aren't as informed as they should be. This reference saved me from a potential disaster in choosing the wrong species of fish.

Customer Reviews:
SO DISSAPOINTING!.......2006-02-07
I have to agree with other reviewers. For those of us who love collecting melmac, this guide falls short by a mile. There was so much more to say about this fabulous vintage dinnerware - including listing pattern and color names, but it was nowhere to be found. Hopefully, someone else will publish a more comprehensive guide for us Melmacians!
a feeble attempt to cash in on another fad.......2001-08-07
I couldn't get very excited about this book. The whole genre of "pricing guides" is tacky and depressing (it takes all the fun out of junking - both from a buying and selling standpoint) but this one didn't even try to be informative. It wasn't well researched, nor was it very comprehensive.
I would suggest ignoring these guides and just going with your instinct. If you like it, buy it. Don't let these silly guides decide your taste for you. If you're a dealer, get to know your stuff and your customers and price accordingly.
OK, not a doctoral dissertation but still a useful guide........2000-07-12
The authors have presented a fairly basic overview of most of the main lines of melmac dinnerware, including illustrations from their own impressive collection and a short history of each manufacturer. As a reference volume or identification guide, this falls short, but as a general overview of the world of melmac, probably this is the sort of information that most semi-casual collectors can use. Until a better volume on this subject comes along (rumor has it that a promising young scholar is working on just such an opus) this still has to rank as about the best set of encapsulated summaries and illustrations available. Hence 4 stars.
Research 101?.......2000-05-11
I found this book very disappointing: the authors did a minimum of research. Instead, they filled the pages with photos of items from their own collection--the monotony of this approach is quickly evident. With very few pattern names given, and a far too general price guide, there is little information in this book. A self-indulgent effort, at best.
Excellent source for plastic dinnerware collectors!.......2000-04-18
Exceptional overview of the world of plastic dinnerware. The photos are great as are the company descriptions. This book makes those flea market finds easy to identify and price.

Book Description
What were the causes that motivated legions of black southerners to immigrate to the North? What was the impact upon the land they left and upon the communities they chose for their new homes? Perhaps no pattern of migration has changed America's socioeconomic structure more than this mass exodus of African Americans in the first half of the twentieth century.
Because of this exodus, the South lost not only a huge percentage of its inhabitants to northern cities like Chicago, New York, Detroit, and Philadelphia but also its supply of cheap labor. Fleeing from racial injustice and poverty, southern blacks took their culture north with them and transformed northern urban centers with their churches, social institutions, and ways of life.
In Black Exodus eight noted scholars consider the causes that stimulated the migration and examine the far-reaching results.
