Book Description

Connor Hawthorne and her lover, Laura Nez, are enjoying a quiet weekend at a women's resort in Palm Springs, but a poolside conversation soon has them neck-deep in a mystery with global ramifications. Soon, they are in England investigating a healer named Sister Sonia, who is toying with forces about which she has little understanding, which could have disastrous consequences. Then Connor's daughter, Katy, against her mother's wishes, goes undercover to investigate Sister Sonia and disappears.

Lauren Maddison is the author of four previous Connor Hawthorne mysteries: Deceptions, Witchfire, Death by Prophecy, and Epitaph for an Angel. She makes her home in Southern California.

3 out of 5 stars Heart just didn't seem to be in it..........2005-06-03

I was looking forward to reading this book and found myself disappointed. I kept thinking, "That doesn't sound like something that character would say". I couldn't help but feel that Ms. Maddison's heart was not really in this book. It seemed disconnected and forced in ways her other books did not. I noticed quite a few editing errors as well. Wish I could give this a better review. Enjoyed her other books and plan to give the next one a good chance.

4 out of 5 stars the eleventh hour a connor hawthorne mystery.......2005-01-13

Once again Lauren maddison has me questioing my own belief system. By that I mean life after death, reincarnation. I was completely enthralled with this book and the mystery in which Lauren Maddison seems to make you feel comfortable with new characters. This is a book for people who enjoy to read it was simply put a pleasure :)

5 out of 5 stars Another good one.......2004-11-21

When I picked this book up, I knew I was in for a good read and I wasn't disappointed. I tried to stretch it out overseveral days by reading just a few chapters at a time, but was able only to last two days. The story is good, the writing is excellent and the developoment of the five (count 'em) major characters is so consistent. I hope we'll get toknow Ayallah better as she and Malcolm get married.
I don't think Maddison will ever top Deceptions, but she is a consistently excellent writer who comes up with plots that work for her characters. I do think it's time for Connor to become more accepting of her heritage. Her refusal to be gracious about who she is makes her seem sullen about her powers. She doesn't have to give up her skepticism since they are sure to encounter frauds, but she'll become mmore powerful if she accepts who she is. I'm already looking forward to the sixth book.

            Book Description

What’s really stopping you from losing weight and having the body you’ve always wanted?

Is it that you’ve tried everything but nothing seems to work? Could it be a slow metabolism, or is it your genes? Maybe you love to eat but hate to exercise? Or possibly you lack the time, the energy, even the money?

The answer, according to Jim Karas—the man who has helped countless people lose weight and literally reshape their lives—is that it’s none of the above. Nor is it your gender, your age, or any other reason you may be wrestling with! The answer, says Jim, is that you still haven’t “flipped the switch”—that is, reached a point where the desire to lose weight finally becomes more important than the desire to overeat and not to exercise. The biggest hurdle you will ever face in losing weight isn’t sticking to a diet or going to the gym every day. It’s simply this: getting started.

Now the creator of the number one New York Times bestselling book The Business Plan for the Body arms you with the tools that will help you turn your desire for weight loss into reality. Get ready to hack through the nonsense (“Only strenuous aerobics will slim me down”) and negative mental graffiti (“I hate my body, I’ll never lose weight”) that are stopping you from achieving your goals, because Flip the Switch contains a blueprint for conquering all the obstacles to achieve permanent weight loss.

Jim blasts through the excuses, helping you to confront, understand, and ultimately vanquish these issues through a series of revealing self-tests. To help you flip the switch, he offers detailed eating guidelines, including a seven-day jump-start diet plan with menus and shopping lists, and three simple illustrated exercise routines to choose from. Jim’s eating and exercise recommendations are realistic and satisfying, especially when you begin to see the results! And his invaluable advice is sound, inspiring, and from the heart—he’s been there and he knows what you’re up against.

If you haven’t flipped the switch, then you haven’t taken the most essential step toward weight loss. Let Jim Karas’s Flip the Switch show you how to change your life—today.

5 out of 5 stars It's all about lifestyle change.......2007-01-01

First, I not a big reader and I don't run around saying "Oh, you've got to read this book!" but this particular one has been very helpful in keeping me motivated as I journey down the path of attaining a healthly weight and lifestyle. I have lost a total of 65 pounds (15 to go) over the course of a year and everybody asks me "what are you doing?" -- I tell them it's all about correcting bad behavior and replacing it with healthy habits -- there is no magic pill, potion or program. This book is not a program or a diet, it's all about that -- something that each person can adopt in their own way and live with. Everyone knows what they should do, a lot of it is the mental stuff that everyone has to deal with to stay motivated to lose or maintain a healthy weight. I do weigh myself once a day AND write it down to keep track, I do count calories informally (it becomes second nature), and I exercise regulary (power-walking, gym or sports). For these reasons, I love this book, refer back to it frequently and have recommended it to several others.

5 out of 5 stars No-nonsense book to help change your mindset.......2006-11-05

I've been varying degress of overweight all my adult life, but in the last 5 years, I ballooned up to nearly 100 pounds over my healthy weight. I've always known what it takes to lose weight -- expend more calories than you take in -- but still had a tough time trying to take off any significant amount of weight. This book helped me make the mental change I needed to get the weight off. So far, I've lost 35 pounds (in 3 months), and still have a very strong resolve to get the rest off. I don't feel 'deprived' in any way -- just the opposite, as a matter of fact. The book does not contain any radical new info; no 'magic bullet'. But for me, this book has truly helped me "flip the switch".

5 out of 5 stars No Gimmicks, Real Results.......2005-08-19

After following the advice in this book for four weeks, I'm within 20 pounds of my goal weight for the first time in five years. I've done Atkins and South Beach, but my weight loss would always stall after the first two weeks. Jim Karas' approach involves getting you to first believe that you can follow a sensible, effective weight loss program, and then he gives you the diet and exercise guidelines you need. Yes, you will have to exercise, resistance/weight training is crucial, and you will have to follow an eating plan that asks you to burn more calories than you take in. All I know is, I feel and look better than I have in years.

            1 out of 5 stars BORING!!!!.......2005-08-05

Nothing new here. Same ideas presented in a very uninteresting fashion. This book neither motivated me, nor did it teach me a thing about fat loss.
Jim should read some of the other books that have been published since. The "3 Hour-Diet" by Jorge Cruise and "Five Factor Fitness" by Harley Pasternak are significantly better.

5 out of 5 stars This Program Works!.......2004-08-05

I have been following this book for just three weeks. I did the Flip The Switch Jump Start Eating Plan for the first two weeks and lost 11 pounds. In week three, I lost another 3 for a grand total of 14.

This book is so easy to understand. I get to eat all sorts of different foods and lose weight. I don't feel deprived. I hate exercise, but I only have to do it for 15-20 minutes, three times a week. That I can do.

Check this book out. I just bought another copy for my mom and she is amazed by my results.

                Book Description

David Bouley, universally praised as one of the most important chefs cooking today, shares his recipes from Austria and other regions of the Danube in this stunning, beautifully illustrated, one-of-a-kind cookbook.

East of Paris embraces Austrian culture, lifestyle, and -- above all else -- the new Austrian cuisine, as interpreted by the renowned David Bouley. Praised as one of the top chefs in the world, Bouley, in collaboration with executive chef Mario Lohninger, has adapted and lightened Austrian cuisine, introducing innovative cooking techniques to indigenous ingredients and classic regional dishes. This cuisine is truly unique, capturing the peak flavor in its ingredients, combining classic techniques and influences from around the world, and translating them into a culinary language with an Austrian gestalt.

All of the recipes here have been prepared for the home cook; some are from Bouley and Lohninger's own repertoire, and some are reinvented traditional dishes that have been made in Austrian homes for generations. Featuring extraordinary photographs by Thomas Schauer, East of Paris introduces readers to a refined cuisine that draws on Austrian cooking, is prepared with the highest standards, and goes well beyond the culinary canon.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Austrian food and wine pairing.......2004-12-06

I bought this book and a book about Austrian wine. I found the recipes to be a bit complicated, but quite wonderful. I also found some Austrian wine from an online shop (www.winemonger.com) to go with the food!

2 out of 5 stars Beware, check this out from a library or friend first!.......2004-05-19

What can I say, many of the pictures in this book are wonderful and present the cuisine in fabulous splendor, but the recipies tend to be complex and will not come out exactly as pictured. Some of the dishes seem convoluted, particularly the dishes that require minute amounts of over a dozen ingredients.
I understand that David Bouley is held in a high regard, just reading Charlie Trotter's review is enough said, but, I think that is based largely inpart on Bouley's restaurant, not the book itself. I also beleive that much of what is in this book is not meant for the novice cook. I consider myself experienced and more than capable of preparing an out and out quality meal, but this book is not helpful in explaining technique or corresponding the text and pictures to an actual outcome.
I say beware of this book. Check it out from a library or borrow a copy from a friend and try the recipies first. I think that if you were to buy this based upon reviews or a cursory glance, you will be disappointed in how the recipies translate into stunning dishes in your own kitchen. If you struglle or fail, as I did, it is disheartening and should in no way reflect upon you as a cook. I will be honest, I was discouraged, but I had to sit and think about the audience for this book and the level of skill it is written for. I think anyone considering this book as a gift or addition to their own library needs to consider these two factors prior to making a purchase. And, if in doubt, spend some time looking it over carefully in a bookstore coffeeshop before you buy.
Make no mistake this book is wonderfully photographed and well constructed, but contnet wise, I cannot say that it is among my favorites nor do I find it a very useful or insightful text.

5 out of 5 stars Cooking like my grandma did.......2004-04-15

I don't thought I would like this book so much. But when I get it, I sat down and for 2 hours I was reading the book. As a German, this recipes sound often so familiar. My grandma kam from Prague, so her cooking was similar. For me, the recipes are easy to follow but you need your time. I am sure in the next time I will cook a lot from this book. The last year's I was in Italian-cooking, then California-cooking, now it is a change with this book. My husband will love it.

2 out of 5 stars Great chef, lousy book.......2004-04-05

David Bouley is one of America's great chefs. He could be our greatest culinary creator. Bouley's first cookbook is only a peephole into his talent and creation.
In trying several of the recipes offered by his book, I was initially optimistic. The concepts are interesting, the preparations are layered with different nuances of flavor, and the pictures are lovely. The first hesitation I had, was when i noticed that the recipe for Mushroom Goulasch corresponded only abstractly with the photo of the dish. In the recipe, the dumplings are not dumplings, but more of a spaetzle. the spaetzle is not yellow with pieces of chive, but totally green. Finally the beautiful buttery foam in the photo is in actuality a heavy green sauce. So much for truth in advertising.
the potato salad we made was first class.
the tuna dish we made was fine in most respects yet sorely lacking in detail as to the slicing of the tuna (which is critical in the cooking process).
the dishes were very involved, yet the final result was mediocre at best. What a waste of time!
I have eaten in Bouley's restaurant (Bouley's} and followed his career from a distance for some time. He has undoubtedly squandered a great talent in some ways. Yet, I would love for him to publish i true compendium of his creations. Bouley is so talented. I feel very disappointed as i can only assume that the bulk of his oeuvre will be forever out of my reach and understanding.

                5 out of 5 stars Austria's Road to Modernity.......2004-02-29

What makes this book effective are the possibilities it offers to take part in the realm of pure gastronomic ritural - from cooking to digestion. It's hamartophobic in the best sense, as Bouley and Clark capture through words and photographs what taste buds would attest to if they could take on their own five senses. I entrechat and applaud your efforts. It's Austrian food on the highest level.

The Reality of Professional Pet Sitting

I enjoyed this book very much. Many of the incidents I too had experienced at one time or another and found myself laughing out load. Definitely a good resource of any one thinking about being a pet sitter. Written very well. I highly recommend it.

everything you can use to start your own pet business, I mean everything, very informative. a must buy.

                  2 out of 5 stars Wrong Title.......2004-08-03

This should of been called "The bad things that happened to me while pet sittng for 8 years." The vast bulk of the book is made up of anectdotes from the author's life that, taken alone, would keep anyone from wanting to become a pet sitter. Although the author obviously has a love of her job, there is not one recount of a positive experience that would explain that love. The reader has to pause in wonder at the author's fear of mice, squirrels, iguanas, and even some cats. If you are a lover of ALL animals, or you if are looking for advice on how to start or improve your business, you will find this book seriously lacking in substance. Written in second (yes, second) person, and full of uninspired language wrapped around poor attempts at humor(ie.repeated use of the phrase 'no pun intended'), this is a disappointment by any measure. Two stars is a generous rating.

3 out of 5 stars Cute and helpful.......2004-05-28

This book was easy to read and full of cute stories, but some of them were lacking in content or the way in which it was written. They are short one-page accounts of incidences that have happened to her, and while most are entertaining and insightful, a few are anti-climatic and I felt myself waiting for something, when it just ended and the whole point was already told. It also fell short in the editing department, with a handful of typos and unofficial technicals in writing. This is something I or anyone could've easily written. As a published book, it needed work in editing and style before publishing. But as a guide and insight to what you can expect while pet sitting, it certainly does the job. She gives you all kinds of incidences that can, and probably will, happen to any pet sitter. She also wakes you up to the hard parts of the job and, exactly as the title describes, the realities of pet sitting. It's definitely good to read if you are considering going into pet sitting, and I would agree with most of her advice. She definitely shows her degree of experience.

5 out of 5 stars Doggie stories stranger than fiction!.......2004-04-10

I read this book in 2 sittings, absolutely impressed by this woman's dedication to pets, when I would have probably given up. If you're considering pet sitting, you certainly need to read this book first. It's a hands-on manual for the job.

Not only does the author give obscure tips (make sure owners didn't lock screen door and exit through the garage) that you'd never think of, she gives personality advice on who will make it and who won't.

In my opinion, one would find it more lucrative to just do cats and not do dogs (which are HIGH maintenance for sure). But the author is a better person than I am in terms of doggie devotion. I'd be in the middle of the street screaming at some of the things that happened to her.

The only thing I disagreed with was her estimation of the income potential, which was low. I think cats and birds would put it much higher than office work. The dogs pull it down. Read it and see for yourself.

                    Book Description

This is the first and a most comprehensive work on wooden butter shapers, a subject of interest to many folk art authorities and collectors. While working as a Specialist in History for the Museum of Michigan State University, the author, Paul Kindig, examined and photographed all of the major museum collections in the United States and Many private collections. The author has also visited numerous museums in Europe and compared their butter prints and molds with the American successors. Detailed chapters on hand-made, craftshop-made, and factory-made prints and molds help to identify the methods of construction and patterns associated with each type. The large and exquisitely illustrated center of the book is devoted to the design motifs found on these bearers of wonderful folk art designs. Beautiful color photographs show the tulips, hearts, plant forms, animals, symbols and monograms which can be seen as the American counterparts to coats of arms. Finally, a fascinating section on European collections presents many variations from Continental Europe and Great Britain, bringing the study around to confront its origins.

                                              Book Description

First in a trilogy, Merry Hall is the account of the restoration of a house and garden in post-war England. Though Mr. Nichols's horticultural undertaking is serious, his writing is high-spirited, riotously funny, and, at times, deliciously malicious.

I want to give my honest opinion of this book. I have never read anything else by this author. While it was entertaining, I found it to get just a little more drawn out than I would have liked. I also did not like his viewpoints on some of the different plants. I guess you just need to take it in stride, but when he characterizes some of your favorite plants as nuisances (or more), etc. it is a little irritating. I did enjoy it, but I don't think I'll read him again. I wanted to give this review, since everyone seems to have LOVED this book but me.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, Engaging Read.......2006-08-23

The first volume of a trilogy about the author's time at Merry Hall, this book is more humorous garden writing than strict autobiography. We know (primarily from the dust jacket) that Beverley Nichols was a widely-travelled journalist and prolific author, but aside from the occasional mention that he needs to keep working (hard) to pay the (very high) bills, Nichols doesn't mention his life outside of Merry Hall or, more specifically, its garden.

The book begins after WWII, when Mr. Nichols returns from "a job" in India to a ravaged London and develops an overwhelming urge to move to the country and get back to nature in the form of a hopefully large and preferably derelict garden that he can "rescue". After a daunting (and amusingly described) search he miraculously finds what he considers to be a dream property - a Georgian manor house on 5 acres of truly hideous landscaping.

With wry wit Nichols tells the story of acquiring the property against the better judgement of friends, and of what is involved in making a run-down manor house habitable, and in dismantling, re-ordering and re-planting 5 acres of gardens. Along the way we meet Oldfield, the very talented but taciturn and somewhat difficult gardener; Gaskin, the long-standing and nearly superhuman manservant; Miss Emily and Our Rose, nosy and perpetually disapproving neighbors; and the beloved cats One and Four.

Although avid gardeners will no doubt love this book as they mentally compare notes with the author, one need not have ever dirtied one's hands with compost to enjoy reading it. The narrative meanders like a leisurely stroll in the garden, and Mr. Nichols' faith in the therapeutic powers of gardening is reminiscent of that in The Secret Garden (Frances Hodgson Burnett). The author's fond and poetic descriptions of the various aspects of his garden, intermingled with his sharp social observations and dry British humor make this a thoroughly enjoyable read. I have already ordered the other two books in the trilogy.

An additional note: this is a facsimile of the original 1951 edition; it contains lovely line drawings throughout, and is printed on the nicest paper I have encountered in a long time.

Just as Trollope passed the literary torch to Angela Thirkell, so did E. F. Benson pass his to this good fellow! Mr. Nichols' trilogy about Merry Hall is so entertaining, even though at times he comes across as a bit "twee". As you get to know him and his neighbors through the books, you come to realize that yes, some things are more important in your own blinkered surroundings than in the big wide world. I would recommend these books to anyone who loves gardening (on a grand scale), gossip, and the minutiae of life.

4 out of 5 stars A book that stays with you.......2002-04-17

I first read Merry Hall over 30 years ago, and having recently re-read it I was impressed by how much an impression it had made on me. Many a time I have unknowingly quoted from the work, thinking the quote apocryphal!

You must read for yourself how to deal with an overgrown holly hedge, and how to plant hundreds of trees without buying them, and what berberis can do for you, and why you should cultivate periwinkle...

I'm sure you'll be delighted with the finely drawn sketches of the real people populating the story: the characters of gardeners, society ladies, and men who work for the government in a clearly covert and somewhat sinister capacity. You'll enjoy the cats, the lilies, and how to create an English country garden from a neglected and ill directed site.

The gentle humor reflects the gentler times before the horrors of World War 2 brought violence, destruction, and death into the hearts and homes of most of Britain.

                                              This book is a keeper!

Beverly Nichols, author of MERRY HALL says the love of gardening involves the love of art, the love of love, and the love of death. Following his experiences in WWII, Nichols retired to the English countryside to restore himself mentally, physically, and spiritually. He doesn't inform the reader directly of his background (I know this from having read some biographical material from other sources), but he had another life before he bought the house and grounds describes in his trilogy beginning with MERRY HALL. He was a journalist and writer, and during WWII he spent some time abroad in His Majesty's Service.

To the unknowing, Nichols narrative may seem a bit too cheerful, frivolous, or shallow, but his book is intended to entertain the reader--this is gardening mind you not the aftermath of war. To the extent he able to do so, Nichols kept the events in the DAILY MAIL out of his gardening books. As a result, some readers today can mistakenly think him an English prig who had no concern for life outside his own back yard.

MERRY HALL begins one afternoon when Nichols and his 'man' Gaskin stumble across a derelict Georgian manor house and it's grounds. Nichols is overcome with a desire to restore the house and rebuild the grounds. He has been living in London and until that fateful day was more or less settled, but now he wants to "move beyond the Tudor world" and into the world of the Georgian Manor House. He buys Merry Hall and thus begins his adventure.

MERRY HALL was written about six years into the project. By that time Nichols had undertaken the restoration of the foul smelling pond just off the music room and won the support of the able Oldfield, the gardener who came with the house and grounds. The book is an interesting mixture of personal anectdote, observations about the various neighbors who have their own opinions of what Nichols ought to restore the house and grounds, insights into elements of garden design, practical advice about various bulbs, shrubs, garden ornaments such as urns and benches, and observations about greenhouses and cats.

Baring My Soul, the highly acclaimed and anticipated memoir featuring new and selected poems by Stacey James McAdoo, has been described as a powerful, no-nonsense and controversial body of poetry and prose.

Praised for it's vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue, this revealing sociological study is written in a “conversational, matter-of-fact, this is how it is” tone wherein McAdoo, through a loud & consistent/ strong & controlled/ you can't put me in a box and shut me up/ voice emerges, in the manner of Ida B. Wells, as a critical thinker by providing a provocative exploration of various issues that plague the Black community.

In an honest, engrossing and emotional recount of McAdoo's life experiences, topics on love, marriage, sex, fighting addictions, selling drugs, mental illness, race relations and white privilege are addressed. While this is a super-serious book, it is also filled with moments of humor that give way to outburst of laughter. But more than anything else, what makes it exceptional is its honesty. McAdoo's strength and courage to openly discuss so many interpersonal topics in this beautifully written social commentary truly serves as a source of inspiration.

                                                                    Customer Reviews:

Many of you who take this journey with her, may not be able to relate to her experiences, but you can learn from them. Mrs. McAdoo puts herself out there on the line in ways most people wouldn't dream about. It was refreshing to see someone who has nothing to hide and her words may well force you to deal with difficulties of your own. Wonderful job!

The book "Baring My Soul" is very inspirational. It made me laugh, cry and go hmmmmmmm! I am waiting on "Baring My Soul II" because I feel that there was so much yet to be told and now I would like to know about how Stacey & her family have dealt with the loss of her brother.

                                                                    5 out of 5 stars Speechless.......2002-06-26

In a crowded airport, as I sat impatiently awaiting my delayed flight, I began to read "Baring My Soul". I thought I was just going to skim through a couple of pages and just sorta waste time. I bought the book outta of support and because of a referral, without having a clue as to what it was going to be about. And boy, was I in for a shocker. The people at the airport probably thought I was CRAZY because I was literally talking outloud. I finished the entire book at the airport...and it is the best book I've ever read. I'm going to re-read it so that I can let certain parts soak in and make sure I didn't miss anything! Stacey is one extraordinary lady...and a BADDDDD [meaning good] writer! Good luck and I wish you much success.

I loved this book. I initially sat down to read a couple of chapters, and before I knew it, I was through! I thought the book was intelligently written, yet at the same time, it was written in a "down to earth" understandable language where everyone could relate and comprehend. The whole time I was reading, I just kept shaking my head and thinking to myself, "this sister is deep". At times I found myself talking outloud to the book...lots of the stuff I just couldn't believe! This book stirred up a lot of emotions...I often found myself getting angry, crying and even laughing. This is a heavy book and everyone should buy a copy. (I wish I could convey that my momma, my sister and my daddy - because right now it's rotating through my family!)

It is a time of raw emotion, and intense pain, but for the author this was combined with an unyielding feeling that there was a story to be told. This is the true story of a life unfolding, of events coming together in the most unlikely ways, and an increasing awareness of God in everyday life. The situations encountered - illness, redundancy, a new career and a tragic bereavement, light the way of a spiritual path and invite readers to consider their own spiritual journey. The disappointments, the insights and the grief are shared with readers in a compelling book which, written from the heart offers hope and inspiration to anyone facing the challenges of life.

She bares the souls of her readers...sometimes coaxing us out of our skins, sometimes shocking our eyes open to the truth of ourselves and the world around us. Direct without preaching, this book talks to your heart without any pretension. Thank you, Ms. Tolbert, for putting it on paper.

The honesty and openess puts this artform in the category of innovative alternative expression. In a comercial driven world it is so nice to experience something real. Stacey is definately a leader in the new Neo Soul Movement.

Readers are allowed, during an entertaining recount, to explore her past experiences (pleasant and melancholic) and private thoughts. Baring My Soul is beautifully written, hats off to the writer.

For a little book, Stacey Tolbert's "Baring My Soul" packs a mighty, lyrical and poignant punch. You can tell right off the bat that Stacey Tolbert, aka The Brown Suga Poet, is a spoken word poet because her words literally leap off the page in a musical way. The line breaks, rhymes, unrhymes, rhythms all move in a fluid way that makes you want to drink what Tolbert has to say and believe me, this sister has a lot to say and doesn't believe in holding back.

In this compact collection, Tolbert touches upon racism, sexism, the political arena, self-respect, self-love, strong women, and many other potent topics that lets you know that behind the pretty words, Tolbert has a strong mind.

Though I loved every poem in the book, some of my favorites include, The "be" Anthology Poems, Hair, and Tolbert's epistolary poems, especially, Dear Nubian Teenage Girl.

To all readers who love the written word and an artist's ability to put words together to create beautiful and powerful statements, you owe it to yourself to pick up Baring My Soul by Stacey Tolbert because she does just that...bares her soul, in all its poetic grace.
