Book Description
Harvey Mapes is a twenty-nine-year-old security guard who spends his nights in a guard shack outside a gated community in Southern California, reading detective novels, watching TVLand reruns, and waiting for his life to finally start . . . which happens when Cyril Parkus, one of the wealthy residents, asks Harvey to follow his beautiful wife Lauren. The lowly security guard jumps at the opportunity to fulfill his private eye fantasies and use everything he's learned from Spenser, Magnum, and Mannix. But things don't exactly go according to the books . . . or the reruns. As Harvey fumbles and stumbles through his first investigation, he discovers that the differences between fiction and reality can be deadly. With the help of his mortgage-broker neighbor and occasional lover Carol, Harvey uncovers a blackmail plot that takes a sudden and unexpectedly tragic turn . . . plunging him into a world of violence, deception, and murder . . . and forcing him to discover what it really takes to be a private eye.
Lee Goldberg is a two-time Edgar Award nominee whose many TV writing and/or producing credits include "Martial Law," "Diagnosis Murder," "The Cosby Mysteries," "Hunter," "Spenser: For Hire," "Nero Wolfe," "Missing," and "Monk." He's also the author of My Gun Has Bullets, Beyond the Beyond, Successful Television Writing, The Walk, and the Diagnosis: Murder series of paperback originals. He resides in California.

Exceeded my expectations!.......2006-11-04
I bought this book because it was recommended by Amazon when I purchased an Andrew Vachss novel. The cover looked kind of cheesy, like an old Mickey Spillane paperback, but once I started into it, this book was unlike any other mystery I've ever read. The main character was incredibly refreshing. He is not a "hard boiled" detective- He's just a regular guy. In fact, I felt like I could identify with him in many ways. That was the appeal. Unlike Batman, whom I like because he represents what a human in peak form could accomplish to solve crimes, the main character of this novel is able to proceed through the mystery without any advanced training or skills of any kind. As a bonus, though, he's incredibly humorous and self-deprecating as he makes his way through the plot. If you enjoy Elmore Leonard, Lawrence Bloch or would just like to read a mystery that's a great variation on the standard genre, I highly recommend this book!
Fantastic book!.......2006-04-25
I started reading this one yesterday afternoon and was instantly wrapped up in the story. There were things I had planned on doing last night, but they all got pushed aside so I could keep reading this book.
It's rare that I read an entire book in just one day but that's what I did with this one. The story was so good that it was very hard for me to put the book down.
Author Lee Goldberg has a lot of talent. Not only did he craft a fantastic story here, but he also gives us very appealing characters. Harvey Mapes (The Man With The Iron-On Badge) is one of the most original and likeable characters I've come across in a long time.
Goldberg is a very busy writer. I recently read that he's already contracted to do more books in his DIAGNOSIS MURDER and MONK book series.
Still, I hope he someday finds time to give us more stories about private eye Harvey Mapes. Harvey is too great of a character to appear in only one story.
Fun And Entertaining.......2006-03-16
This book has suspense, intrigue and more twists than Lombard Street in San Francisco. Harvey Mapes is a security guard at a wealthy apartment complex, low man on a low totem pole. His only excitement is watching Cop shows and reading detective novels. He fantasizes the exciting life of a PI. In almost Wizard Of Oz fashion, a tennant decides to have Harvey trail his wife to which he finds out that their is an added dimension to the trade--pain.
a good start of a new series.......2006-03-11
I had doubts when I read this - the premise was a good one - a 'security' guard at an upend subdivision hired by a man to follow his wife and report to him her actions - The assignment is taken seriously. Our hero, Harvey, like us, has grown up with TV detectives (a bunch that author Goldberg helped write) and he thinks if Spencer or Mannix can do it, why can't he be a private detective too? The references to TV and fiction detectives is fun -
The plot has many twists that keep you guessing - Harvey learns quickly that you don't bounce back from real wounds like Hollywood detectives, and the line between good and bad sometimes gets faded.
Did not like the book's ending.
Will reserve judgement on the series until book 2.
Clever, kinky comic mystery.......2006-01-27
Harvey Mapes is a 29 year old security guard with a desire to be a private investigator, just like all his television and fiction heroes. Opportunity strikes when a resident of the wealthy gated community Mapes "protects" as a gate attendant asks him to follow his wife for a few days.
Mapes, who can be affectionately described as something of an airhead, leaps into action, putting to work all he has learned from Mannix, Rockford and other fictional detectives.
Bursting with pride, Mapes tells all to Carol, his neighbor and very occasional lover.
As Lauren Parkus makes her way through town over the next few days, Mapes blunders behind, thinking all the time about what Mannix, Spenser or Rockford would do.
Lee Goldberg has crafted a very funny mystery, with a decided bit of kink as well. Mapes is an interesting character, not without a bit of Forrest Gump or the village idiot. Mapes soldiers on as the body count mounts. He does indeed locate a suspect, rather cleverly draws him out at great personal risk and finally leads to a conclusion that may strike some as over the top, but Goldberg actually does quite well in surprising the reader and wrapping up the threads of the story nicely.
All said, this is a comic mystery. The characters, particularly Harvey Mapes are well developed, and the plot is nicely done. Frankly, I hope this is only the beginning for Harvey Mapes. He's an interesting character and after his baptism under fire, it would be neat to see how Goldberg can develop him.

Great Book Great Writer.......2005-04-04
I believe Venture to Midnight is an amazing book and who wouldn't like it with a caracter like Blaine? Max and Rachael are wonderfully complex couple. I look forward to the upcoming books and will be sure to read them. I am one of Bryans biggest fans! Continue to amaze us Mr. Pedas.
Amazing.......2004-10-07
All I have to say is where is the next book?? This story is so awesome that I could not put it down.. I am truly caught in the story and can't wait to see where it goes from there....
Love it.....
Gripping!.......2004-05-01
When I heard that the infamous author of Mr. Cow was extending his talents to the world of fiction, I just couldn't resist. Venture to Midnight is a brilliantly crafted piece of literature that I had trouble putting down. Will Pedas be publishing more in the future? Possibly anything along the lines of chick-lit.? A few ideas come to mind...
Yay Pedas.......2004-04-12
This book is this century's next great work. I was completely impressed and caught up in the characters and plotline. This is a must-read for any fan of Pedas. I'm looking forward to reading more of his work, especially anything including Mr. Cow.
Incredible.......2004-03-26
What an amazing journey. Pedas has crafted a world which hasn't been visited since the great writings of Tolkien. Bravo, Pedas. Bravo.

nutritional excellence.......2007-08-28
I have grown weary of Health Shop and pharmacy employees whos expertise is limited to certain areas of medication and their interactions. I take many suppliments and could not get accurate information on interactions, and other detailed information necessary to make good informed choices. Until now. At times like this, I wish I'd gone to med school, or been a journalist, to be able to accurately and succinctly review this excellent book. Suppliments and other medications can be dangerous together, and it is imperative to be informed, so as to only take what's both necessary and healthful. At last a book that covers EVERY aspect of supplimentation, and nutritional therapy. It accurately covers interactions, ACCURATE dosage, and dangers associated. If like me, you are bombarded with information from the bottles of companies desperate to sell you their product, regardless if you really need it or not.. then this book will be a breath of fresh air for you. Nothing is left out, only pertinent information left in. A real treasure for the health conscious.

The Bible of Nutritional Supplement Information!.......2007-01-07
This is an outstanding piece of work that Michael Murray has compiled! Whether you are a beginner or an expert in nutrition, you will find this book very insightful ! In this work he documents a comprehensive list of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, nutrients, and glandular extracts. Mr. Murray also elaborates on the functions and uses of each to provide sound education to the reader. My favorite part of the book is that he includes many different lists of whole food sources to obtain everything listed above. For instance, when he discusses Magnesium, he breaks down what foods have the highest magnesium content and what foods have the lowest. This is an extremely valuable source of nutritional information and I would recommend this book to everyone!

This is a valuable book for the layperson and professional, for the understanding of the complexities and properties of vitamins and minerals. However this book is now 10 years old and showing signs of age, and would benefit from a significant update, as some of the information is no longer applicable.
The section called "Understanding Fats and Oils" is probably the weakest link in the chain for this book, and the reader would be well guided to ignore this section. This is a shame because the effect of lipids on the human body is profound in terms of health benefits. To replace this section, the reader would be wise to read the publications written by Dr Mary Enig and Canadian Udo Erasmus, who are two of the leading research experts on the subject of fats and oils.
Also in this encyclopedia the section on cholesterol is also inaccurate. Better to read the books written on cholesterol by Swedish Dr Uffe Ravnskov, as well the recent book by Fitness Expert Anthony Colpo on cholesterol.
However as I mentioned before, this is an excellent encyclopedia, and I greatly look forward to a future update from the author to replace my well worn copy. Also a hard cover would be nice and I dont mind paying the extra cost. Whilst paperback is fine for books you read just once, hard cover is better suited to a reference book like this encyclopedia.
If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it. .......2006-09-20
This isn't the latest, but it's the best. If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it. I'd read it before your first, next, or whatever visit to the nutritional supplement store or aisle.

Customer Reviews:
Finally! Great vegetarian cookbook!.......2007-09-23
Having been vegetarian for a short period of time, I was worried about how I was going to eat when I went from full-time student and part-time worker to working the 40 hour weeks with an hour commute round-trip.
There are so many facets of the book that I applaud:
Most importantly, Starving Students vegetarianizes the comfort foods that students (and busy professionals) crave . . . just like mom used to make. There isn't much glamour to many of the recipes, but that's a refreshing change from many of the cookbooks I've bought in the past. You don't go to this book for a sophisticated, gourmet meal. You go because you're hungry, don't have time to chop 50 things, and want to feel full and satisfied. Another thrilling point is that the majority of the recipes are prepared in under 20 minutes, and those that take longer involve baking in a oven with a short prep time (though I wish the time indicated on the recipes differentiated between the amount of time you're actively cooking).
And finally, I am so relieved to find a vegetarian cookbook with ingredients that I have heard of and have seen in a regular grocery store. There's nothing more frustrating than perusing a cookbook and getting excited about a recipe to only find that I would need to go to a specialty store to find ONE ingredient that I may never use again. The ingredients are simple, easily obtained, and though most of the recipes are for 1-2 servings, you can very easily double the ingredients so you have leftovers for lunch and avoid half an onion sitting in the fridge.
While I didn't find them particularly useful, there are lists included to help you stock your kitchen (basic supplies, utensils, appliances, and cooking ingredients sorted by supermarket department). There also are hints and tips to chopping and preparing for the easily-intimidated.
This isn't a book intended for the gourmet vegetarian chef. However, if the gourmet chef was exhausted, had a slow week at the restaurant and needed to pinch pennies, he or she would go to this book for some vegetarian comfort food.
it gets the job done........2007-01-17
this book gives very easy recipes using very few ingredients, which is really helpful for students (or anyone, really) on the run. many of the recipes are palatable, but do not expect anything gourmet.
Exactly what I hoped for.......2006-11-10
Not a student, but needed some inexpensive recipes. I'm also a "beginner" vegetarian, so this is more my cooking level.
this is a great book.......2006-10-30
I first checked out this book when I was taking the plunge into vegetarianism. I found the recipes tasty and easy. The only problem I had was I do not own a microwave, so I had to adjust and do things on the stove. Now, nnearly four years into my meat-free diet, I find myself living in a cramped studio with the tinest kitchen I've ever seen (my fridge isn't even in the kitchen it is so small). So, I brought "The Starving Students' Vegetarian Cookbook" off of the bookshelf and back into my kitchen. The recipes are fast, easy, and tasty-and don't take up a lot of space to prepare.
Fantastic! what every poor veggie needs!.......2006-03-03
My mom got this book for me when I first moved out on my own and it saved my life! I never cooked before, and I almost make at least one thing out of here every day!
Favorites of the boyfriend (a carnivore) and myself include the Gourmet Mushroom Burger, almost all the pastas and the Zuchinni Omlette.
a note to the reviewers "Disappointed" and "Buyer Beware" below. You just have to carefully read labels in the items you buy! You don't have to follow the recipes to a T, I substitute You can't believe it's not butter Light, or use a canola oil spray instead plain butter. Reduced-fat cheese works just as well as regular. And there are brands of worsteshire sauce that don't have anchovies, I live in SoCal and Ralph's brand is veggie friendly! just a head's up.

Get yourself a lil poodie.......2004-03-24
I have owned Labrador Retrievers for years. Due to my marriage, and the loss of my last Lab, I married into a 7.5 lb. poodles life. Is it a dog, really? After all, Poodles have "hair not fur"...this is the most adorable, intelligent, sensitive lil creature, and I adore her. I take her out into the field with me, so that she can be a real dog, and she is a specimen to behold. Get a poodle. Love it, and nurture it, and it becomes just one of the family...as for the book, just get a poodle, they will teach you....
Not exactly 'complete'........2003-09-16
This was my first poodle book...accompanied by my first poodle. It's limited in scope and calling it 'complete' is not accurate. However, it was sufficient for starters.
A Great Book for First Time Poodle People.......2003-04-12
This is an excellent book about all-around poodle care. There is good information (that I have not seen in any other book) about feeding a natural diet and the aging process, as well as general care and grooming. Though one reviewer felt there was too much "caution" about adopting a poodle, I feel it is appropriate. Poodles love people and require near constant grooming to look and feel their best, and they need an owner who knows they need a lot of care and time.
Not impressed.......2002-03-10
The authors seemed to spend more time asking you if you really, really, really want to get a poodle, considering all the work and money they take, than on giving valuable information. Not very helpful to those of us who already have a poodle and want to learn more about our dog/puppy, and caring for them. It does have chapters on care and grooming, etc, but for the first several chapters it seemed to be cautioning people away from getting a poodle, at least that was the impression I had.
Looking for better.......2001-10-15
I've been looking for a goood poodle primer and found this at the local bookstore. It is a near-replica of a number of other cokkie-cutter books by similar titles on other breeds. There was little poodle-specific information ... most of the pages were general dog-related information.

Pressland's Not-So-Great Book of Tin Toys.......2003-05-29
Time for a reality check, folks. I tracked this book down because I'm a tin toy freak, and I read all kinds of glowing words about the book itself, re: production, photography, etc. Turns out it's a treat for tin toys up till WWII, but almost laughable in its coverage of post war pieces. Also, the production isn't all that great -- nice tin piece attached to the cover, but on my new copy the red cover was bubbled in one spot, and there were pages stuck together with glue. The photography is okay, but not spectacular, and the production values are pretty much routine for a picture/text book like this. The slipcase is boring in design -- in short, I've had coffee tables that looked more spectacular than this coffee table book.
Don't get me wrong:it's a valuable and often beautiful book, and Mr. Pressland should be congratulated on his work, but it just isn't worth this kind of money.
Well Worth the Price.......2000-02-22
When I first considered spending this kind of money for a book I was convinced that I had surely lost my mind. Now that I've had it for quite some time I can say that I would have paid more. It is a gorgeous book with beautiful pictures of rarely seen tin toys. If you're a collector this is absolutely a "must have"! It, along with Pressland's "Art of the Tin Toy" have been our prominently displayed coffee table books for months and guests, who may know nothing about tin toys, thoroughly enjoy the book as well.
A must Have.......1998-11-30
I can sum it up with one word "Excellent"
Beautiful.......1998-10-01
My Signed book Presslands Great Book Of Tin Toys was the topic at a Toy get together. I was offered 3 times the Amazon.com price for this book. People who look this book over are Taken back by the Photography. Get yours before they are all gone.
Excellent Photography the best i have ever seen........1998-08-30
A must for the serious Toy collector. Excellent photography and plenty of it.
Customer Reviews:
Too focused on plants instead of troughs.......2005-09-03
I was disappointed in this book for many reasons. I was looking for a resource on how to create different shapes, depths and sizes of hypertufa troughs. This book focused on fairly shallow, square troughs. Because most of the trough photographs were in black and white, it was difficult for a beginner to visualize how a finished product should look. Too much of the book was focused on the type of plants you can grow in troughs. I feel a trough is just a container with unique characteristics and was hoping for information on the kinds of problems trough gardners face and how to deal with those problems. I gave the book a 3 rating because chapter 2 - 'Constructing A Hypertufa Trough' was well done. Even with the lack of color photographs in this chapter, you will know how to create a small, square trough. If you are looking for creative trough ideas this is not the book.
Great resource for this niche gardening style.......2004-05-03
Stone agricultural troughs, either as a theme or an accent, can add a special look to a garden. Of course you don't have to use a real stone these days as cement can be used to create the troughs. But, whether stone or cement it still ends up extremely heavy. One way to get around this is to mix peat moss with the cement. This produces a much lighter weight, porous trough that looks like stone. That is the focus of this particular gardening book - how to make these "hypertufa" troughs, what plants do well in them, and some basic plan layouts for using them in a garden design. Pictures of the troughs created by these techniques show troughs and stones that appear very old with lichens and mosses growing on the sides. They remind me very much of pictures of ancient Mayan or Indonesian stone ruins. For anyone who wants to add this type of accent or wants to create a garden that has the appearance of ancient stone structures this is a book you will want to have.
Practical workbook...........2001-02-01
CREATING AND PLANTING GARDEN TROUGHS by Joyce Fingerut and Rex Murfitt is a pragmatic and down-to-earth (or hypertufa) work book with 164 jam-packed detailed pages printed on non-gloss heavy paper. The book contains about 10 pages of color photos, so if you're looking for a "look-book" as opposed to a "work-book" don't stop here. TROUGHS won an American Horticultural Society Book Award, and like AHS publications and U.S.D.A. government publications this publication is filled with good, solid information. (Reminds me of the Girl Scout Handbook.)
Fingerut and Martin begin with an overview of the history and background of troughs (originally carved from solid stone and used to hold water for livestock). Even though most of the photos are in black and white, you obtain a clear idea of the beauty various shapes and sizes can add to your garden. The older troughs covered with moss are to die for.
A section on "Hypertufa" explains what it is and why it is useful for making incredibly lightweight and strong facsimiles of real stone troughs. Next, the reader is supplied a shopping list of ingredients, utensils and other supplies (rubber gloves, polystyrene foam, duct tape, etc.) needed for the trough-making project. Exact quantities and amounts are not provided, but ratios are given instead. This lack of exactness might prove frustrating to the new trough maker.
A good part of the book is devoted to the design and installation of plants in troughs. There are many excellent photos and an informative text describing plant choices, plant care, recommendations, etc.). If you aren't inclined to take on the obviously dirty and labor-intensive work of making your own troughs, you can check to see if your local garden supply store or nursery sells ready-made troughs and then use this book as a guide to filling them with plants.
Most Comprehensive Resource in Print!.......2000-04-04
For the novice or experienced trough maker or trough gardener, this book is a MUST HAVE. I could have been spared months of research and many lost hours in trough construction had this book been available when I began making troughs! A very organized presentation of material with breath taking color photographs, detailed resources, extensive plant index, and easy to assimilate instructions. I recommend this to all my "trough students"! A worthy investment!

Book Description
This volume examines the transmission of biblical pseudepigraphic literature and motifs from their largely Jewish cultural contexts in Palestine to developing gnostic milieux of Syria and Mesopotamia, particularly that one lying behind the birth and growth of Manichaeism. It surveys biblical pseudepigraphic literary activity in the late antique Near East, devoting special attention to revelatory works attributed to the five biblical forefathers who are cited in the Cologne Mani Codex: Adam, Seth, Enosh, Shem, and Enoch. The author provides a philological, literary, and religio-historical analysis of each of the five pseudepigraphic citations contained in the Codex, and offers hypotheses regarding the original provenance of each citation and the means by which these traditions have been adapted to their present context. This study is an important contribution to the scholarly reassessment of the roles played by Second Temple Judaism, Jewish Christian sectarianism, and classical gnosis in the formulation and development of Syro-Mesopotamian religious currents.

Book Description
Memoirs Of A Regular Guy is the coming of age story of a sexually misguided youth. It chronicles the teenage years of the author; and is full of the lessons and adventures that come along with adolescence. You won’t be able to put this book down!
Customer Reviews:
What the........?.......2004-05-17
Absolutely horrible.... I wouldn't even use the pages from this mindless story to wipe myself after releiving myself. There is no point to this story and I can't beleive I even wasted my time reading it.
Great Book.......2000-03-22
I thought this book was outstanding. Very true and bold. RJ told it like it is -- very honest. If you want the real deal -- this is a must read.
couldn't get past the first couple of pages.......2000-03-18
I thougght that this would be a good read-to get a different perspective. I hated it from the beginning and threw it in the trash. Don't waste your time.
Sad.......2000-03-15
This reads like an early teen's fantasies, and the writing level bears this out. The entire book is very degrading to women, but may find a market in junior high boys, which is sad, as it will only serve to perpetuate an immature outlook toward female classmates. My advice: save your money.
FUNNY, HONEST, ENTERTAINING.......2000-03-14
I found the book to be very up front and entertaining. The author obviously bared his true feelings and emotions in this what I found to be a humorous and no holds barred book. Once I started reading I did not want to stop. Definitely a must read!

Book Description
This is a husband's story of his wife's determination to fight breast cancer, her bravery in dealing with the pain, and the dashed hopes as her body refuses to respond to the rigors of treatment. Terry and Nancy were in no hurry when they met, acting like love-struck teenagers instead of middle-aged adults. But shortly thereafter, Nancy was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and given two years to live. Terry made up his mind to marry Nancy, a single mother of twin boys. This touching memoir of loss reveals a couple uniting to confront an all-too-common disease and a family coping with loss after Nancy's battle is done.
