A quick read....not one of his best, but I enjoyed it...

3 out of 5 stars Weaker than the rest of the series..........2002-04-12

More than once I've heard folks talk about God Bless John Wayne as one of the better Kinky entries, but I'm just not convinced. Everything from the premise to the by-the-books sleuthing seems both contrived and hurried.

For those not in the know, Kinky Friedman's fictional self is a wonderfully Texan detective living in NYC with his cat and a Sherlock Holmes head where he keeps his cigars. His dysfunctional drinking pals often need his advice/help...and here, Ratso needs Kinky to find his mother for him. After a little help and a few dead ends (the Kinkster in Florida?) we're off and running.

As usual the high points here are Kinky's many asides about music, drugs, women, coffee, Jesus, etc., and while he has never been better in the wit department I'm afraid that we've lost much of the charm of the storylines from earlier volumes. It's not so bad as to make me quit reading, but I just don't see this one as a stand-out.

4 out of 5 stars Another Friedman masterpiece!!.......1998-09-07

I usually read one Kinky Friedman book per summer. I find them the perfect getaway from the politically correct, inhibited times in which we sometimes attempt to live. Friendman's lair (Vandam St.) is only a few blocks from our own perch in Greenwich Village NY. Like him, I care deeply for espresso (French Italian blend from Porto Rico Importing Co.) and cigars. Our taste in animals differs. I prefer dogs and he is a cat man. We both share a dislike of lesbian dance classes being conducted above our digs. All in all, I dig the cat's lifestyle in a very big way man. His books don't take long to read. Buy one at JFK and chances are good you'll be done with it by the time you arrive somewhere....well alright....ANYWHERE! In his latest, he and his good buddy Ratso go hunting Ratso's birth parent, as if someone would ever take credit for giving birth to Ratso. For me the funniest parts take place with the Kinkster in Florida. I don't know why. Somehow the idea of a Jewish guy in Florida just seems so out of place. Anyway, settle down with a pot of espresso, a nice cigar, a bottle of Jamesons, and have a few laughs.

4 out of 5 stars More fun than a dead person should be allowed to have........1997-08-03

So it has an element or two of foreshadowing that you can see a mile away. And he ain't Shakespeare. Still Kinky has irreverant fun all the way through an attempt on his life, a few bottles of Jameson, a case of Cuban cigars, two Zippos and a tap dance rendition of Swan Lake by the lesbian dance class overhead. It's fun. Fans will not be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars bibical wisdom for the 90's with bone breaking humer to boot.......1997-06-11

Kinky, has some of the most heinous humor with a direct in your face harmony woven into his own lifesytle observations. He can pack more wisdom in a sentence or paragraph than the average WASP can deal with but it is fun trying. The characters drum into your memory like the best of seifield without the dull commericals and TV editors watering down the context or meaning. So take yourself to the wild side of NYC , Texas, and homcide

2 out of 5 stars single girls guide to marry a man, his kids and his ex wife.......2007-10-01

This book gave situations that come up that can happen but not suggestions on how to deal with them. this book didnt do me much good.

3 out of 5 stars Down to earth advice - too bad she copped out at end.......2007-09-06

I wasn't quite sure how to rate this book -- I enjoyed MOST of the book, but, boy, she slung a real doozy at the end, which left me with a bad taste in my mouth. First, the good stuff -- she relates with honesty, frankness, and much-needed humor, the struggles faced by stepmothers, using many examples and stories from her own life. I felt relieved, energized and heartened. I found myself taking myself less seriously and began seeing the big picture, and even laughing at some of my struggles (particularly with the ex-wife). She has a young, hip tone, which was refreshing after some of the "psych-speak" books I had previously read (although at times it seems she's trying a little too hard). BUT -- and this was a big "but" for me -- at the end she basically says the only way to be truly accepted is to have your own child with your new partner. Ugh. I felt like I had been sucker-punched. As a "childless" stepmom, I felt completely diminished, devalued and disrespected. I wanted to yell, "Sally -- not everyone chooses to or WANTS to have a child! Have a little respect!" I have to say that this last chapter and this declaration cheapened the book for me. It made her sound naive and judgmental, not to mention insensitive. I wondered how someone who seemed so "with it" for most of the book could be so "out of it" on this point. I'm just so tired of the "have children, it will solve everything and give you a purpose in life" thing. Too bad she resorted to this tired old answer, especially in this age of inclusion, and recognition of ALL types of families. And too bad her publisher didn't think twice about including it. I am rating the book 3 stars, hoping that she is just young and naive, and wouldn't have written that if she were 40.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the girlfriend that is considering becoming a stepmother.......2007-09-04

I am a single gal who was looking for someone to tell me the issues that I might be inheriting if I take the next step with my boyfriend. This is an informative book of issues to be aware of and reads almost like a novel. I had picked up another stepmother book but it was way to dry and had too much homework that I was not prepared to concur just yet. This was an easy read.

This book was written for people that know they are going to marry a man, his kids and ex-wife or already have - not for people contemplating. It did lack such issues as - things to consider when moving in with each other, how to introduce kids into the relationship, etc. If you are still on the fence, you might consider another book that deals with dating issues and the step between dating and marrying.

5 out of 5 stars Straight talk for new Stepmoms!.......2007-09-03

I am a new stepmom to a six year old girl. She's great, but sometimes, things bother me and I have a hard time putting them into words. This book is like reading my mind. It has helped me so much, and it also makes you realize that feelings you have sometimes are natural and ok...nothing to feel guilty about. All new stepmoms should read this book...even if your husband wasn't married before - if he just had children from a previous relationship, as mine did, a lot of the book will still apply to you as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! Suprisingly Entertaining.......2007-08-02

This book really helped me to realize that I'm not the only person that does really stupid step-mom things and then regrets them. It's a great read if you're feeling like no one in the world can possibly understand what you're going through.

Going only by the enthusiasm bursting out of this cookbook, the easy money says that Rick Stein, author of Taste of the Sea (and star of a British TV cooking show of the same title), is to seafood cookery what Richard Simmons is to weight loss. Stein opened a seafood restaurant in 1975 and has witnessed the rise in popularity of fish and shellfish in Great Britain in the intervening years. The same rising arc is true for the United States.

Stein breaks his cookbook into sections dedicated to choosing, prepping, and cooking techniques as well as basic recipes for stocks, sauces, flavored butters, and dressings. The fish and shellfish recipes he divides into oily fish, Mediterranean fish, round fish, flat fish, large fish, crustaceans, shellfish, and then a collection of soups, stews, and pies. He includes a list of fish alternatives for the American and Australian markets, where some of the British and European fish won't be available.

Take equal measures of passion for seafood and delight in brilliant flavors from Asia, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and North Africa, and you'll have a sense of how Stein enlivens his seafood recipes. Sure, you'll find salmon in sorrel sauce, or seafood thermidor, but that's just the comfort food side of this book. Look also for a Thai seafood salad, a Goan shark curry, and a Dover sole with cilantro, cumin, and chiles. This book is a good place to start for those who need a little extra nudge in the seafood direction. --Schuyler Ingle

      Book Description

Whether you are one of the thousands who have already been converted to the wonderful flavors of Rick Stein's fish cookery, or have yet to sample them, this book contains over 150 fabulous recipes showing just how pleasurable, satisfying, and easy it is to cook with fish.

      5 out of 5 stars Delightfully Simple.......2005-10-02

I rate cookbooks not on how they look, or even on how difficult they are to follow, but on how good the recipes taste. In this category, Mr. Stein excells. The food is delicious. His recipe for Tom Yam Gung is one of the easiest and best tasting recipes for this classic Thai soup that I have ever tasted. The wonderful blend of fresh seafood and asian spice is unbeatable. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Passion yet simplicity.......1999-02-14

Ideal for anyone who wants to cook fish but is either worried about how difficult it might be - or bored with the same old same old.Rick's passion and enthisiasm is contageous.

If you are like me - love seafood, and always eat it in restaurants, but not sure about tackling it at home - this is ideal.

Its a good read even if you dont want to cook!

5 out of 5 stars Enthusiastic, simple and delicious........1998-10-06

Rick Stein is not only a superb chef but his writing is clear, simple and enthusiastic - like his food. He gives plenty of tips from what utensils to buy, to how to store fish and how to make excellant stocks. All the way through the book he carries you along with his passion and almost cooly, simplistic aproach. If you like fish - or even if you don't - I am sure you will find this book rewarding, not only for the food but also the interesting little tit bits he incorporates.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Dog Lovers!.......2003-07-27

This is a very informative and helpful guide to dog care. It also takes animal welfare seriously, suggesting that you adopt your dog from an animal shelter and by telling ways to help dogs! A must-read for every dog owner!

5 out of 5 stars great starting resource.......2002-07-24

We just received a dog from the humane society a week ago. A few days prior to getting the dog I bought this book and read about the first half. I found it incredibly helpful and informative. Most resources you read mostly have information regarding bringing home puppies from breeders, with very little about shelters. Not only did this book help calm my nerves about getting the dog, but I refer to it constantly to answer my questions that come up.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, complete guide for dog owners and wannabees.......1999-01-17

I bought this book because I am a fan of the writing ability of its author, Marion Lane. Over the years, she has written many articles and columns about various aspects of choosing, raising, and living well with a pet. I like her perspective on the importance of the human-animal bond, and I like the down-to-earth, often humorous, always wise way she talks to her readers. I am not a "dog person" myself, but many of my friends, coworkers, and neighbors are. I've lent out the book to a friend considering getting a new dog after being dogless for many years. She found Marion's section on factors to consider in choosing a dog very helpful. I took the book to the office when two of my coworkers had to decide how to handle end-of-life matters for their beloved pets. Marion's sensitive handling of the deep feelings involved brought Cheryl and Gisela to tears, but those were tears they needed to cry to loosen the tight knot of feelings that weren't being fully expressed. They found Marion's ideas comforting. I'm glad to have this book as a resource to lend out to my friends and acquaintances who have benefitted from reading relevant sections. I wish that prospective dog owners would read a book like this before getting a dog, so that they would know what they are undertaking, and could make a better decision about whether they and a particular dog are likely to make a good match.

5 out of 5 stars A complete guide to dogs in language everyone can understand.......1998-12-02

Marion Lane and the HSUS have given dog lovers an excellent book that covers the range of subjects from selecting the right dog to facing the inevitable decline and death of our beloved pets. The book is not just for the "doggy set." It is written in language that everyone can understand and should be a valuable resource for those wanting to better understand and care for that most important family member. The author's knowledge about and love of dogs comes through on every page. It really is a book that belongs in every dog owner's library - even if it is the only "dog care" book.

4 out of 5 stars A look at the real nuts and bolts..........2007-09-19

I've read several game design books, including Mike McShaffry's Game Coding Complete. While reading architecture and design is good and many of the books reflect the author's experience on several projects, Game Developer Postmortems provides the actual triumphs and stumbling blocks each game project went through.

A quick read and the best way to get insight into these projects without actually having worked on the teams, it's a book I'd recommend to anyone looking to understand game design projects.

5 out of 5 stars Experience, distilled, in a bottle........2007-08-20

Love this book. Each postmortem is full of advice about designing, producing, and shipping a video game - advice from the developers themselves - allowing YOU to learn from THEIR mistakes. Techincal gaffes, hiring snafus, political missteps, project management mistakes; anything that can go wrong in a software project HAS gone wrong in one of these stories.

When you get to the end of this book, you'll feel like a battle-hardened veteran that can take anything a project throws at you; and most of minefields mapped out are surpisingly appicable to ALL software development, not just video games.

Beware: this book may have you rummaging through discount bins to find the games mentioned- good or bad, you feel affection for a game once you've shared the trials and tribs of the creators.

                Book Description

An essential guide for everyone interested in culture and creativity in the digital world.

The impact of digital technology has radically transformed traditional activities such as painting and sculpture, while entirely new forms, such as net art, digital installation, and virtual reality, have emerged as recognized artistic practices. Digital artists themselves are often pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and exploring some of the most urgent social and political issues facing humankind today.

The first major illustrated survey of the field, Art of the Digital Age presents the work of over one hundred artists from around the world. Following an introduction that traces the history of digital art, the book goes on to consider its diverse genres, from digital imaging, installation, and animation to software and net art. Each chapter illustrates key works by both established and emerging figures, while personal statements from the artists offer revealing insights into their inspirations and methods.

A comprehensive reference section that includes a year-by-year timeline of breakthroughs in digital art, an extensive bibliography, a list of artists' websites and online projects, and a glossary of digital terms complete this indispensable assessment of art in the new millennium. 232 illustrations, 218 in color.

5 out of 5 stars great book, well done.......2007-05-30

THis book is very well done, very nicely printed, everything - well worth the money. - the only thing I didn't like was the fact that it didn't share anything about how the artist created the specific piece (i.e. what programming language or software was used, etc)

the pieces enclosed were just fantastic, and I'm glad I bought the book.

5 out of 5 stars Wands Greatest Work Yet.......2006-09-30

After reading this book and experiencing the incredibly well produced and expertly printed visual images it is clear that this book is one for the times. It is one that can be opened and opened again and again never losing its constant appeal. Very well worth the price and I highly recommend it to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Beware of the title.......2005-10-21

First of all, if you're in doubt about whether this book could still be useful 17 years after its publication, the answer is 'yes'. The author gives a reasonably thorough introduction to the production of printed matter (especially books), discussing such "timeless" topics as typography and page layout. He doesn't dwell on the technology of the time, so almost all the information contained in the book is still applicable today.

The book was born out of an introductory design manual prepared by Xerox for its customers. It's informal in tone and all the jargon used is explained by the author, who assumes that his readers are new to the trade. Rather than prescribe exactly how a page should be laid out and what kind of typeface should be used in each situation, the author discusses traditional solutions and tries to give the reader enough information to enable him or her to make his or her own decisions. The author gives tips, but never presents them as the only, or even the best, solutions -- a refreshing approach for people who can't stand Robin Williams's arrogance (not the actor, but the author of 'The non-designer's design book' and 'The non-designer's type book').

Now a warning: this book has a rather inappropriate title. For one thing, you'll find but passing remarks about anything electronic in the book (which is good, since that would have made the book completely obsolete for our day and age). But most significantly, this is not a book on graphic design in general: it's really an introduction to page layout and typography, with an emphasis on text-intensive publications, particularly books.
