A great book to read if you are into haunted graveyards. The book was in good condition and the sellar mailed it fast. Great experience and the way around.
Grave Yards.......2006-07-19
All people see & hear things even if they are blind or deaf. The Warrens just present what many have seen & heard through out the years. I own the book Grave Yards by the Warrens. I have had an experience at a grave yard myself while I was in my 20ties & again in my 40ties. I just wanted to see what the Warrens had to say about the subject. Their book has already helped me.
Way to fantastical!.......2004-09-02
I bought the book due to the reviews, even though I have seen this couple on tv and wondered about them. I found this book way too fantastical. Some of the stories were waaaay out there! I don't even think they investigated any of the cases. Not all of the stories dealt with ghost, some banshees, demons. Also very short book. I wondered if they just wrote down passed down stories.
Fascinating stories with too little documentation.......2004-01-28
Graveyard consists of a number of cemetery-related ghost stories. The first third of the book addresses stories surrounding Union Cemetery in the Warrens' home state of Connecticut, while the remaining two-thirds of the book is made up of similar graveyard tales from all over. The book was basically written by Robert David Chase, but Ed and Lorraine Warren clearly determined the content and offered many of their own opinions and stories throughout the narrative. The Warrens are well-known ghost hunters, and this fact can be something of a double-edged sword. Name recognition alone will draw some to this book while turning others away. The Warrens are a very active and outspoken couple, and many of their beliefs and theories are rather extreme. Personally, I believe in ghosts, but my own beliefs do not stretch as far as those of the Warrens. The famous couple seems to find ghosts everywhere; they go into a cemetery with a tape recorder or video camera and come out with evidence of spiritual contact, evidence which is rarely laid out specifically for those they are speaking to or detectable in the evidence they offer. In addition, they often assume facts which still remain up in the air to many of those interested in the subject at hand. I find them overzealous at best. For instance, Ed talks about having filmed a ghost in Union Cemetery that could easily be seen on the video he took of it, yet no picture of this sort is included in the eight pages of black and white photos in this book. All claims aside, there really is no proof offered for any of the stories told in this book.
Graveyard should be viewed as a collection of ghost stories and nothing more. In that capacity, the book works reasonably well. A number of very different ghostly experiences are described here, several of which do have the potential to raise goose bumps. Almost all of these stories are interesting if not fascinating, and the centrality of cemeteries in each story makes this a somewhat unusual book of ghost tales. Taken in this vein and viewed primarily in terms of entertainment, Graveyard is a successful book. If you expect more than that from the Warrens, you may be disappointed, as this book is not constructed on a solid foundation of credibility.
Truly Captivating!.......2004-01-24
This book was amazing! Being familiar with the Warrens work I bought the book knowing that it would be an informative and exciting read. It was all that and more, at least to me. I found myself during the day wishing to hurry home to read more! Ed and Lorraine Warren, with the aid of author, Robert Chase, out did themselves! The book is chalk full of a vast variety of TRUE, ghostly tales. That's the key word here, " TRUE ". Some are sad, some happy, some evil, while others had odd endings. However, most are on the very creepy, horrifying side. It is nearly 200 pages long and every story was just, if not more, satisfying than the last. A few of the stories made your jaw drop and make you say out loud, " NO WAY, THAT CAN'T BE TRUE "! For example, one of the stories in section one, entitled, " Strange Passenger ". Three words...Very very freaky! You wonder to yourself, " Oh my gosh- would I be able to live through something like that if it happened to ME "? And in section two of the book there is one particular story that was incredibly unsettling. It was titled, " The Dead Return To Earth ". In the extream possibility of this story being accurate, which I believe it to be, is mind numbing and absolutely defys logic. I highly recommend, " Graveyard, true hauntings from an old New England cemetery "! But be warned folks, many of the stories in this book have a tendency of giving one the powerful feeling of fear! I would not read it if you are alone in the house. Mainly because you know the stories really occured!!

The sleezy side of Arthurian legend!.......2005-09-02
Tired of Arthur being pious, Merlin being saintly, and Morganna and Mordred being nothing but generic villians to move the story along? Merlin's Gift, followed by its sequel, Mordred's Curse, puts an entirely new spin on the old tale. Mordred is the same self-centered, whoreing, cussing debaucher as in other versions of the story, yet as the protagonist, he is delightfully lovable for his honesty. Told from Mordred's cynical perspective, no one comes off looking good, and by the end of the story you will be as sick of Arthur's puritanical moralizing as Mordred is. Very refreshing and highly recommended if you like that style of wry humor. Mordred's Curse pulls you right down into the mud with the main character, and you'll be cheering for him all the way to the story's tragic end. "Dark" fantasy at its finest.
Not you, Uther and Merlin!.......2005-03-07
There is no alternative but to give this book "1 star". I wish I could give it "minus 5".
I must disagree with every one who reviewed this book before I did. This book is horrible! The worst Arthurian tale I have ever read. Uther and Merlin are despicable. And Arthur, so proper and critical, so full of self guilt, and to make matters even worse, a religious fanatic.
Don't waste your time. This book is not worth the short time you spend reading it.
Deceitfully delightful!.......1999-07-20
Mr. McDowell has a way of catching you with the first sentence of his stories like no one else. And he doesn't let go. I bought a copy for myself, and made everyone read it. This variation makes much more sense than the romanticized writings of the Arthur legends one usually finds. Too bad it's out of print, or I'd start buying copies for friends again! Now I just need to finish reading the sequel.
A refreshing take on an old legend.......1997-10-09
I've read many retellings of the Arthur legend, and I'd started to think that authors were running out of fresh ways to tackle the subject matter. Then I read Mordred's Curse. This book is a look at the life of Mordred, a character who in most Arthurian tales appears suddenly at the end, just in time to spoil the party and bring Camelot to its ruin. In this book, we get the full story. McDowell's Mordred idolizes Arthur as a boy, but his admiration turns sour when Arthur, unable to accept the truth of Mordred's parentage, rejects him. The two develop an uneasy relationship, as Arthur increasingly relies on Mordred, even as he disapproves of him in many ways.
Mordred makes a wonderful narrator. He is perceptive, brutally honest about his own faults as well as those of others, and wickedly funny. The other characters are also well drawn. Arthur is portrayed particularly well as a man struggling with the problems of kingship - he comes across as a flawed but admirable man. And Guinevere, who is all too often a rather lifeless character in the Arthurian retellings, comes across as a woman of real intelligence and spirit.
In short, Mordred's Curse is well-written, has great-characterization, and will turn your picture of King Arthur on its head. Highly recommended.
A great new twist on the Arthurian legend!.......1997-08-01
I've read many Arthurian novels, and quite a few of them were abymsal. That's not the case here: Ian McDowell's novel is excellent! Told from the point of view of Mordred, Arthur's bastard son by his sister Morgawse, this is an inetersting twist on an oft-told tale. The characters really come alive, and Mordred (often relegated to second rate villain status) is fully fleshed out here. The novel is full of emotion, and the characters REALLY come alive. Telling the story from Mordred's point of view makes for some interesting viewpoints (Merlin a pervert?) but it's all smashingly done! I can't wait for the sequel!

New Mom.......2007-03-08
As a new parent, I have found this book helpful - especially since I haven't spent a lot of time around other children. It provides great suggestions on optimizing your child's development & helps parents have a sense of what is normal and what to expect during different phases. I like how it is written in a somewhat "text-book like" style and not anecdotally like many parenting books.
A Good Handbook.......2005-10-26
This book is good at summing up the different stages your child's development. Every age of your child's life has milestones and challenges. This book helps parents to keep things in perspective and helps reduce the stress of parenthood.
Ages and Stages.......2004-02-23
This is an average book. I personnaly don't think it worth the price. I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for development of your child, I suggest that you read Louise Bates Ames serie: Your one-year-old, Your Two-year-old, etc. even if it is a little bit outdated.
If you are lokking for discipline, then I recommend: Kid Cooperation: How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading and Get Kids to Cooperate. By far the best parenting book that I have read.

Great resource for what's "normal"!.......2001-08-22
This book is great for sorting through what's normal age appropriate behavior and what's not. It helped put my mind to ease! It's grouped into four stages; 0-18 months, 18-36 months, 36 months to 3 years, and 6-10 years. Under each stage are sections on Emotional Health, Cognitive Development, Family and Peer Pressure, Personal Growth and Character Formation. It gives tips on how to encourage development in the different areas, too, which I found helpful. It has a very "positive parenting" feel to it!

So, okay, Cindy Pawlcyn adds butter to her mashed potatoes before she adds the milk, which is all backwards according to those who have initiated intense experiments to resolve such issues. But so what? Her food (it's her name on the cover of the cookbook, even though any food coming out of a restaurant as popular and free-spirited as the original Fog City Diner in San Francisco is likely to be something of a group effort--kind of like the Manhattan Project) brightened palates back in 1985 when the diner opened, and it serves adventurous palates just as well today.
Remember when attaching "California" to food actually meant a thing or two? Fog City Diner Cookbook is something of a time capsule in that regard. You have seen similar-looking food on menus in your town. But that's now, and this book (and the food before it) came out back when it was news. What's interesting to note, however, is that Pawlcyn bases her dishes on sound culinary principles. She isn't throwing oddball ingredients together to grab attention or to appear to be clever, she's combining flavors and textures and cultural heritage to achieve specific effects, with new and powerful results. In other words, she shows restraint on the one hand, and knows what she's doing on the other.
For that first blush of that brash California "thang" with food, don't hesitate to hang your hat inside the Fog City Diner. The cookbook, that is. --Schuyler Ingle

Good Diner Food Made Easy.......2006-04-13
I like to browse different types of cookbooks, and to find recipes that I may not find anywhere else. This cookbook did not disappoint. Even though I have not visited the Fog City Diner, I have been to many diners in my day. I was surprised at the large variety of recipes available, and the eclectic ingredients included in the book.
Some of my favorite recipes include: Split Pea and Apple-Smoked Bacon Soup, Mushroom Toast, Cheesesteak Sandwich, Cobb Sandwich, Chicken Curry Pot Pie, Apple Dumplings, Vanilla Caramel Custard, Hot Toddy, and Seasoned Nuts.
Enjoy!
secrets revealed about diner food.......2005-04-11
for many years i was wondering what that german deli down the block from me, was putting in its' tuna salad that gave it a unique wonderful taste. i could never figure it out and was addicted to the tuna salad so was spending a good chunk of my food allowance on it.
tuna is a food that if you can get it to taste great you have a very cheap meal that is good value. tuna as a whole i don't care for except for this german deli tuna.
well i relate this story because the secret ingrediant that i could never figure out is in this book.
for this alone the book was worth the money spent on it.
Okay.......2002-11-04
That's about it. Lots of recipes the average person just would not use.
The recipes work and are fun - a cookbook you will USE.......2000-06-03
Sad to say, I have never been to the Fog City Diner, so I cannot compare my outcomes with the originals. But, the book is great! Enough detail so that even I can get it right, and where necessary (i.e. pie crust) the measurements are PERFECT. The ceviche recipe is an especially excellent one (orange+lemon+lime juice marinade - who knew?). Hearty comfort food with a lot of spirit and panache.

This is such an easy to read and pleasant book. It is very non-threatening and easy to understand. It has a very well organized format. Highly recommeded!
Enlightening..........2005-09-22
I think this book is very insightful in alternative ways of parenting. It makes you stand back a minute and think of how your child might percieve our parental actions. Often it is hard for an adult to see through the eyes of a child. This helps a bit. It is not something that you need to strictly adhere to, they are ideas that you may try to incorporate into your style of parenting. Whether you are going the Waldorf route or not, I think many parents can gather insight about parenting from this...(A side note to the tub cleaning reviewer - try biodegradable cleaning products or give your son a bucket full of soapy water and a sponge, or a spray bottle filled with plain water, he doesn't need to know that he doesn't have the same cleaning solution that you do...it's the fact that he wants to clean with you...someday he won't want to do all these things with you...and you'll fondly look back on the times that he did - that we all need to remember.)

Excellent book.......2006-06-13
I discovered this book when I was struggling with the decision to have my 23 year old horse put down. I read it, teary eyed, from cover to cover the night I received it. This book allowed me to see that the feelings I was having were perfectly normal and I was not alone. It also helped me to learn what to expect when the time came. I would like to thank Kimberly Gatto for taking the time to write this book. It was very much needed.

Bamboos are extraordinary in their ability to transform a garden, adapt to inhospitable surroundings, survive with little care and, most of all, surprise and delight the people who view them. Too long the exclusive pleasure of those with tropical and subtropical gardens, this hand-picked selection allows gardeners in cooler climes to experience the wonder and infinite variety of these magical plants. Besieged by winter wet, summer drought and bitter, drying winds, Paul Whittaker's garden has been a rigorous testing ground. In the first part of the book his compelling anecdotes, experiences and case histories illuminate how bamboos perform in different places, draw attention to their idiosyncratic nature, and highlight their geographical origins. A further section describes the bamboo's unique physical structure and growing habits. These fascinating insights give you the knowledge you need to choose the right bamboo for your site and grow it successfully. At the heart of the book are detailed plant descriptions that join with striking photographs and evocative illustrations to highlight each plant's characteristics. Using bamboos to best effect in the garden, propagation, aftercare and their resilience to pests and diseases complete the guidance for gardeners. The distillation of years of hands-on growing experience, this is the ultimate bamboo reference book for cool-climate gardeners. Enthusiasts will delight in the variety of new possibilities for their collection and gardeners everywhere will be captivated by the charm bamboos bring to countless different garden situations.

The Best Bamboo Book........2007-07-21
The best bamboo book period. Wonderful pictures, excellent categorizing. I have several other bamboo books and this is by far the best.
Entertaining read, and good info too!.......2007-05-24
This book is surprisingly interesting to read, mostly because of anecdotes that the author includes--Paul Whittaker's self deprecating sense of humor makes you interested in meeting him in person.
The things that I appreciated the most about the book, outside of the easy going, easy to read nature of the book:
1. Characterization of the exhaustive list of bamboos included the spreading habit of the plant--how wide the bamboo would get in 10 years. This is great info for those of us who have to worry about containing bamboo...
2. Great pencil drawings of the nature of the bamboo--density of culms, upright vs. fountain appearance. It gave a sense of what the plant might look like in the yard.
3. Great pictures, including close-ups of leaves, and branches in addition to the typical photos of culms.
4. It gave me a better appreciation of the branching characteristics of bamboo families, which presumably has some relation to the density of leaves associated with a plant.
This is the book that I would read over and over again if I were trying to decide which bamboo to plant, or even if I were dreaming about getting a bamboo in the future.
Hardy Bamboo Taming the Dragon.......2007-05-13
Wonderful book. Well written, very helpful information--both general and species specific. Also beautiful, color photographs. Nicely organized, and even the sketches of growth habit I found to be very helpful.
Hardy Bamboos: Taming the Dragon.......2007-03-09
Excellent photos, clear and concise descriptions, well organized, just a super book for the beginner or advanced bamboo grower or enthusiast.
One of the best books about Bamboo that I have read!.......2007-01-12
Great book! A lot of information and a lot of great pictures! It really helps you identify bamboo species and helps you choose the right bamboo for your zone.

A short, entertaining, and extremely useful book.......2002-03-31
If you are involved in page layout - using type and/or graphics -you will probably benefit from a thorough reading of this short book. I have several books by this author but "Great Pages" was the one that gave me the confidence, as an amateur, to explore page layout on my own and to believe in my design decisions. The book itself is a good example of the principles it teaches. It is engagingly written, deftly designed, and has plenty of enlightening, often humorous, illustrations.
The chapter titled "Considerate typography" was especially helpful. Some other standout chapters were "Words and Pictures," "The 'so-what,' 'wowee,' and 's'posed-to' syndromes," and "How to use color functionally." A few examples of the checklists sprinkled throughout the book are "How to decide whether the designer is right for you," " Five reasons for redesigning," "You already know the fundamentals," "Here are ten ways to intrigue and attract your readers," "Here are nine ways to edit for the reader," and "Here are eight ways to design for the viewer."

Book Description
"To me, the book is a fine, heart-warming example of collaboration between an outsider anthropologist-folklorist and an insider community inhabitant."
Journal of Latin American Anthropology
"This book represents a significant contribution to the discipline in that it raises important issues of ethnographic authority and authorship.... Indeed, it could serve as a model for new ways to write ethnography."
Miguel Díaz-Barriga, Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, Swarthmore College
When a ten-year-old boy befriends a mysterious hobo in his southern Colorado hometown in the early 1940s, he learns about evil in his community and takes his first steps toward manhood by attempting to protect his new friend from corrupt officials. Though a fictional story,
Alex and the Hobo is written out of the life experiences of its author, José Inez (Joe) Taylor, and it realistically portrays a boy's coming-of-age as a Spanish-speaking man who must carve out an honorable place for himself in a class-stratified and Anglo-dominated society.
In this innovative ethnography, anthropologist James Taggart collaborates with Joe Taylor to explore how
Alex and the Hobo sprang from Taylor's life experiences and how it presents an insider's view of Mexicano culture and its constructions of manhood. They frame the story (included in its entirety) with chapters that discuss how it encapsulates notions that Taylor learned from the Chicano movement, the farmworkers' union, his community, his father, his mother, and his religion. Taggart gives the ethnography a solid theoretical underpinning by discussing how the story and Taylor's account of how he created it represent an act of resistance to the class system that Taylor perceives as destroying his native culture.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent textbook.......2003-07-22
This book is one of the best textbooks on Chicano studies that has come out in a long time. Joe Taylor is a natural storyteller and I am hoping that his next book is an anthology of short stories on the San Luis Valley life experience. Joe Taylor has lived the life of a descendant of the sturdy pioneers that settled that area. Theses people were to far from Mexico and never included as part of America ,created their own culture, language and customs. Priscilla Salazar
