Book Description
Skill alone won't make tennis players greatthey must also have the mental toughness it takes to perform under pressure. To prepare for the demands of competitive match play, look no further than the training system found in Pressure Tennis.
Tennis coach Paul Wardlaw has created and refined his extraordinary training program through 14 successful seasons at the college level. His system teaches you how to design and implement effective practice sessions using pressure drills that simulate match-like conditions.
With Wardlaw's system in place, you will notice immediate improvements in concentration, motivation, confidence, and conditioning. More important, players develop a resilience to match play pressure and welcome the challenge of even the toughest opponent. To help evaluate progress, Wardlaw has also included a novel Performance Index that provides coaches with a more objective measure of each player's execution, effort, and ranking on the team.
Whether you're a tennis player or a coach, you'll want the demanding drills and practice plans found in Pressure Tennis to help instill the strong mental skills necessary for a winning season.
Customer Reviews:
Well-conceived original tactical system but artificial.......2001-12-13
Paul Wardlaw coaches at Iowa and formerly coached at Kenyon College. He is a well-known college coach and is well-respected.
His "Directionals" system is original in how it is organized/structured. Teachers before him also taught directionals but didn't articulate it as well. His directionals is a form of high-percentage tennis. Some players are not mentally wired to perform directionals and will express confusion when confronting a player who violates directionals (what do you do?). Directionals also sometimes conflict with creativity (or genius, like McEnroe or Hingis) and automaticity (being in the zone). There are a few lesser tactical problems with the "Directionals", e.g., situations where "Directionals" break down. "Directionals" do, however, help many players to understand "high percentage" tennis. "Directionals" also help players to anticipate based on geometry of the court and high-percentage play. It also allows coaches to present tactical ideas in an organized manner. There are many fine coaches who like "Directionals". Most players should be exposed to the concept of directionals...but it is for them to conceptualize their own style and tactics. Still, it is a very fine, original (although hyper-organized?!) contribution to tennis theory. And, every good player usually incorporates a good portion of "directionals" (high-percentage tennis) in their game. A final plus is that there are a wealth of tactical drills many of which don't involve directionals. In fact, 2/3 of the book is based on tactical drills. Recommended for coaches and teaching pros. Recommended for those advanced players looking for systematic tactics or just simply for more drills. Not recommended for beginners and low intermediates (below 3.5 NTRP) since they won't be able to execute many of the tactics and drills.
Pressure Tennis.......2000-11-12
This book was useful. I am an advanced player, but learned a lot from it, especially a lot of useful drills to emphasize his "directionals".
A book for all players and coaches.......2000-05-03
This book is for anyone that wants to improve their play. It shows you how to pick appropiate shot selection so that every shot becomes automatic and you won't have to think about it. These are called "Wardlaws Directionals" and any tennis coach worth anything or aspires to be needs to know. There are also practice schedules that can be used by coaches. A Great book!

Customer Reviews:
Great idea but give it enough time to work!.......2007-10-02
We're planning on visiting France someday so I got these CDs just as a "get started" project. I have a 20 minute drive to work everyday so I play these and I'm surprised that I'm actually retaining what I'm learning. I wouldn't mind if it worked faster but then again, I'm just doing this in my spare time.
Downsides:
1) You must play them pretty loud to hear the proper pronunciation and inflection. This isn't really a problem if you're alone in your car.
2) This doesn't really help with reading or writing but it does include books to go over while you're not driving! :D
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this product. I am speaking basic French with no prior French experience.
great prep for trip to France.......2007-09-02
I used the Learn in Your Car for about 6 weeks prior to a trip to France. I had studied French in high school for 5 years (graduated 25 years ago), so had some basis on which to build my language skills. The whole set was highly enjoyable, fun to use and really helped me when I got there. It is delivered in easily digestible bits, is clearly spoken and puts in useful conversational items. I also like the way it builds from the simplist of useful terms to incorporate more complicated vocabularly and grammar.
I had to report a broken washing machine to the manager of the home we rented. While it didn't actualy teach the words "The washing machine is broken." It did teach Do laundry and "it doesn't work" (in the car section). So, I was able to communicate this. I also had to inquire about a lost drivers license and employed some phrases taught in the CD to discuss this.
I had bought a french language Grammar Book along with the CDs. It was so overwhelming that I couldn't even get past the first chapter. I think the CDs are a terrific way to get immersed in the language that make it fun and enjoyable. Even my kids liked hearing it and repeating the phrases in the car.
People with no prior French language experience will have to go slower and may require more time to get up to speed.
Once I got to France, I sometimes found it hard to understand responses to my beautifully asked questions! However, the French were terrific at helping me with the language and explaining things slowly. I think more time with the CDs would have been useful: I only got through the 5th CD (Middle of the 2nd level).
I would highly recommend it to others planning travel to France.
Easy to use.......2007-08-12
All I can really say is that its easy to use and learn from... A good way to learn if you're always on the go.
Not bad, but not great.......2007-07-26
We bought this CD because we spend most of our time driving around in the car, and other products require that you follow along in a book. We found that some of the words were outdated (saying "garcon" for waiter, other books said whatever you do, don't call your waiters "garcon"). Also, it goes a little fast, so you have to listen over and over to get stuff. In addition, rather than teaching phrases, they concentrate on single words. Some of the best things that I did before I went to France was to learn my numbers, but this tape skips over numbers as they become repetitive (30, 31, 32, 40, 41, 42), which makes it hard to follow as numbers in French are not always the easiest.
Listening to it several times, though, I did pick up several words that were very useful ("billet" for ticket came in handy many times), so it did have some benefits.
You'll be Speaking French in No Time!.......2007-06-27
These cd's are great! Just pop 'em in your car and you'll be speaking French in no time! I have tried other products but for some reason I get bored because the process is slow or I don't really feel like I'm learning anything useful. (Like Eddie Izzard says, it's hard to work "le singe est dan l'arbre" into a conversation). Not the case with these! It teaches you things you'll need to know to get around first and then goes into the more obscure words and phrases. I listen and repeat in my car and then use the booklet at home to look up anything I'm unsure of. I know I'll do great in Paris next spring! If you're thinking of purchasing this product, go for it! You will not be disappointed!
Book Description
An incomparable, ongoing masterpiece. R. Crumb is undoubtedly the foremost cartoonist of the latter 20th Century, and his sketchbooksin which he has written and drawn continually from the early '60s to presentmight rank as his finest achievement. Fantagraphics is proud to present these sketchbooks, in facsimile form, as a comprehensive series of volumes that will eventually run well over 4000 pages. Volume 9, covering 1972 through 1974, is the latest and it represents one of the more inquisitive and soul-searching periods in this phenomenal artist's life.
These sketchbooks represent, in essence, something never before achieved in the field of art and literature: a single, unified, organic (and ongoing) life's work. Even more so than the painter Frida Kahlo's drawn diaries, Crumb's sketchbooks are, as a body of work, incomparable in their magnitude, scope, and intensity, and therein lies their uniqueness and value. Unrecognizable as straight autobiography, these books chronicle Crumb's perceptions more than his life itself. As such, they offer a rare and often raw insight into process: how ideas are formed, how connections are made, how technique and craft are honed, and how the ability to "see" is truly cultivated. The cumulative effect of these sketchbooks is to narrow the gap between the artist and his art; or, to put it another way, to create such an intimacy as to render the profound connection between art and humanity palpable.
These sketchbooks also stand as a monumental existential document. Crumb repeatedly expresses, through a variety of penetrating and coruscating visual metaphors, the central existentialist struggle: to live in the full light of consciousness with all the risk, pain and suffering that entails. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this ninth volume, which coincides with Crumb's rise to fame and rejection of the late '60s hippie counterculture that made him famous. Like every volume in the series, though, Volume 9 offers the full panoply of a life of perceptions rendered with consummate artistry.

Mostly generic cat info.......2002-12-10
As other reviewers have noted, this book has lovely pictures of scottish fold kitties. However, most of the text is general information on cat care. (Grooming, feeding, vet care, showing, etc.)
What I was hoping for was information on how to find these rather rare cats, how much to expect to pay, and how, if any, their care differs from other cats. There was precious little of that.
Guide to Owning a Scottish Fold Cat ( Library Binding).......2000-06-30
This book with its glossy print pages and laminate photo pages gives comprehensive information in very readable format to those who might own or would like to learn more about the Scottish Fold breed. The photos are numerous so that the breed with its different colorations, longhair or shorthair, as well as ear differences are well represented. Topics covered range from the history of the breed to kitten selection, bedding, health requirements and even showing your Scottish Fold. The readable format and beautiful pictures make this book informative and enjoyable for adults who want more information on the breed as well as families who want to share this book among adults and children. A delightful and extremely well done book!

Excellent for both owners and potential owners.......2000-05-18
This is a really great book, full of the most beautiful pictures of Scottish Fold cats. I enjoyed this book because it covers all aspects of owning a Scottish Fold from their history through to showing. My only complaint (which is why I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars), is that the information is in places a little brief, however this is a well priced book for any budget. I thoughly enjoyed all of the 35+ photos included in this book which show many of the different colour varieties as well as the longhaired varity. I think that anyone considering the purchase of a Scottish Fold cat, should also consider adding this book to their library.
Outstanding Photos.......2000-03-27
This book had some of the best pictures I have seen of Scottish Folds. The text was informative and educational but it is the photos which catch your eye. They are done with a high gloss finish and are really beautiful. The book contains information on basic care only and touches only lightly on some topics.
If you are seriously interested in the Scottish Fold, cat there are other books which would provide more information, however, if you just want to admire the beauty of the breed, I highly recommend this book. In paperback, it is not expensive and the photos are as nice as the hardcover version.

Beginning collectors will have an easy time with this practical guide, but those with more experience will find it no less valuable. In Fifty Years of Collectible Glass 1920-1970, Tom and Neila Bredehoft focus their expertise on all kinds of stemware, decorations, and accessories. The first two sections are divided by pattern type--separate categories are devoted to knops, roses, birds, and wheat, for a total of 45 different segments. In the accessories department, you'll find coverage of items from candy jars to console sets separated by type, rather than pattern. Newcomers to glass should be sure to check out the helpful descriptions and line drawings of stemware pieces in the first few pages. Since most of us don't intuitively grasp the difference between a sherbet and a cocktail glass, or know the exact shape of a touraine, the Bredehofts have thoughtfully provided clear and concise definitions that make an excellent introduction or refresher course. The eight bright and glossy pages in the center of the book are a visual treat, showcasing items from many major manufacturers, including Heisey, Duncan and Miller, and U.S. Glass.
Small identification photos are plentiful, and the occasional illustration or old advertisement adds a nice bit of variety. Even in black and white, the pictures of various patterns come through cleanly--only a very few are fuzzy enough that a magnifier may be needed to clear things up. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
This book completes the authoritative set, which covers the full range of collectible glassware produced in the U.S. over a five-decade period.

Not Enough Color.......2001-06-28
I purchased volume II of this publication and there are only 4 pages (front & back) in color. Many of the black & white photos are like looking at bad Xerox copies. I think I'll find it very hard to identify patterns from many of these small photos. Otherwise, well-laid out and organized.
Volume II of the Popular Guide to Glass Collecting.......2000-06-08
This interesting new 282 page softbound volume's major topics include: Stemware, Decorations and Decorative Accessories. It features more than 800 nice black and white photos (and some in full color), and year 2,000 values. You'll find animals, knops, nudes, sculptured and twist stemware, baskets, birds, flowers, and wheat decorations, and candlesticks, candy jars, figurines, vases, smoking items and much more pictured, described and priced. A complete index permits easy location of the items. There's plenty of informative text about each topic. Also included are many illustrations of original catalog pages. Collectors are sure to use this book often.
Fifty Years of Collectible Glass 1920-1970.......2000-05-10
What a wonderful surprise I found in my mailbox today! Volume II is another super book by the Bredehofts. Stemware and decorative accessories galore! Good, clear photos; great old catalog and sales literature; and exceptional descriptions for the novice collector. I really liked the arrangement, by shapes and patterns, rather than by pattern alone, or color or by manufacturer. Much easier for attempts to identify that unknown piece. And I really appreciated the simple definitions of the parts of stemware. This book will be well-used; a super addition to my reference library.

Beautiful, oh, and useful too.......2005-01-16
This is one of my favorite resources for adding plants to my garden in Albuquerque. While I have other plant guides that are better simply because they are more specific to my region, none match this one for beauty. This book is clearly a labor of love from a group of people who are hoping to advance xeric gardening in the Denver area. The information extends pretty well to planting zones 4-7, especially for dry, high altitude climates.
The number of plants listed is a little low compared to other guides that I use, but the coverage of each plant is excellent - one or two full pages of text and pictures. The two-page entries generally include several pictures, including pictures from different seasons. There is also a color drawing of each plant, which makes it easier to see significant details and is helpful with identification. The text is also useful and well organized, but it is the pictures that I spend the most time browsing through.
Excellent guide for all rocky mountain region .......2004-10-24
I live in Colorado, 11 miles north of New Mexico. This book has been a wonderful resource for my xeric gardening. Each plant/tree/vine is decribed by: landscape use, form, native range, characteristics, culture (soil type, etc.), best features, companion plants, disadvantages, and related species. There are pictures of each plant in all 4 seasons.
I take this book with me to plant nurseries and find that people are coming over to look at it and read about their possible purchases.
I agree this is not a resource for the desert southwest but it is excellent for those living in the area from Denver to the middle of New Mexico who wish to learn about water-wise planting.
Xeriscape is not Zeroscape!.......2000-12-22
One myth about xeric design is that it requires the use of only cactus and rock. Not true! In fact, there are seven xeric concepts and these concepts can be applied in any landscape. They are;
1. Pland and design for water conservation from the start. 2. Create practical turf areas. 3. Use plants that are appropriate for your area. 4. Consider adding soil improvements such as compost, manure, etc. 5. Use mulches where possible, such as wood chips, rock, etc. 6. Irrigate efficiently. 7. Plan for an appropriate maintenance system for your landscape.
The Xeriscape Plant guide provides a lot of good information on low-water use plants for dry areas, which are not only found in the Sonoran Desert but in many other places in the west as well. The book provide details on companion plants, advantages and disadvantages of specific plants and even offers photos of specific plants in different seasons. It is part of a 3-book series, and all three are worth having if you are interested in specific information on low water plants, designing a xeric garden and providing the right kind of care.
Desert Dweller comments.........2000-09-26
This book rates a 5 star rating in regions other than the Desert. Xeriscape normally would indicate Desert plantings, however, this book is for the Denver, Rocky mtn. area. It is of little assistance to Desert Dwellers desire to landscape, however, it will be a nice addition to my plant library. As a Desert Dweller I give it a 1 star rating.
Altitude information!.......2000-07-15
Beautiful illustrations of all the seasons and altitude information made this book very useful to me. I could choose those few plants that I can find to grow at my altitude and know how they would look in conjunction with the already established plants in all the seasons. Need a fall color there? You can find it! All in all very helpful.

Save Water And Still Have A Beautiful Yard.......2006-01-05
If you live in an arid area, remember that "there is only a certain amount of water in the world and they aren't making any more of it." An acre of grass takes 27,000 gallons of water a week to keep green. It's hard for some to give up that patch of green grass that America equates with leisure time and suburban living.
Having lived in Central Australia, I advocate for full desert landscaping using native plants along with exotics from dry countries.
Xeriscaping (water-wise planting) doesn't mean a yard that is a barren moonscape. Think of colorful crape myrtles, bougainvilleas, firebushes, palms, yuccas, and many more interesting plants. Artfully placed, they provide a green view and offset the gravel that replaces grass in a water saving landscape. Mulch everything to insulate the soil and keep moisture in the ground.
