Your opinion of this book will depend on your other resources. If you don't have the time and/or access to the Internet, this book will go a long way to helping you get started in black powder shooting. If you have time to lurk in some of the blackpowder chat rooms, and to read other on-line resources, you'll get more, newer and specific information for free. The writing is clear but gets a bit repetitive at times, and there were too many commercials for certain products in the text for my tastes. If you can get this book from your local library, check it out first to better decide if its worth your money. I probably would not have bought it if my local library carried it.

This book was very informative, but "long winded". This is more a collection of articles than an organized, coherent, book-format approach to the subject. The reading is interesting and it is clear that the author knows his subject, but I struggled to quickly gain the knowledge that I was seeking. This being said, I'm not sure that there is any better resource available. So, if you like me, are new to the subject of blackpowder and you'd like to gain knowledge from a book rather than trail and error, then you don't have much choice. Suck it up and read on... not unpleasant, just verbose.

Revised and expanded - more "complete" than ever.......2002-01-23

After repeat borrowing the first edition of this book from my local library, I was thrilled when this 4th edition became available. Sam Fadala answers more questions I had in this edition than in the previous ones. I personally could have done without the chapter on hunting. But at the same time I did appreciate the chapter about the historical background of the big-bore guns. The only improvement I would like to see is a chapter about "kit guns". I.E. who might consider buying a gun this way, which skills are essential and what are the pitfalls.
Overall I find this book very informative. The chapters are organized in a fashion that make it your choice if you'd like to read up on a single topic or read this work front to back. Judging by the used prices for the first edition, this book was a classic a while back and to me it has become a "must read" item for anyone who considers getting into the black powder thing. What one can appreciate in this work is the objectivity of handling topics without prejudice.It has also at the same time,avoided dealing with sensitive issues that could harm religious suceptibilities and inter-religious harmony.

The 'Dictionary of New Testament Background' is actually the fourth volume in a series that includes:

'Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels'
'Dictionary of Paul and His Letters'

While part of a series, each volume (including this one) is largely adequate as a stand-alone reference. This volume has taken a much different approach to the subject matter than previous volumes. 'It attempts to situation the New Testament and early Christianity in its literary, historical, social and religious context. This volume is concerned with archaeology, geography, numismatics, related writings, various historical figures, political institutions, historical events, peoples and culture. It is not tied to specific writings of the New Testament, as is the case with the three previous dictionaries.'

Taking full advantage of major strides in research, particularly in the areas of archaeology, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and linguistic and cultural studies, this work incorporates essays every major topic, and most minor topics, that have to do with formulating a greater understanding of the cultural, societal, economic, religious, linguistic, and historical background of New Testament times. This is a pivotal time in the history of the world, regardless of one's religious interest or orientation, and this dictionary covers topics that will be of interest to the scholar without theological interest as well as those who are looking to increase their background knowledge for purposes of reading the New Testament.

The editors are Craig Evans, professor of religious studies and director of the graduate programme in biblical studies at Trinity Western University, Langley, British Columbia, and Stanley Porter, research professor in New Testament at the University of Surrey Roehampton, London. Together these editors bring a background of scholars from Jewish and early Christian studies , as well as classical history and scriptural/textual studies. These editors led the team of over 200 scholars from around the world to put together this 1300+ page collection of essays and articles.

The articles range in length -- some no longer than 500 words to others of 10,000 words or more. The length is determined based upon the complexity of the subject and/or the relevance for New Testament research. Each article includes bibliographic information for further research, and most are cross-referenced for further reading within this volume.

Perhaps the best use of this text is in addition to bible study or education planning -- this is not a narrative, sit-down-and-read-it kind of text, although I have found myself many times picking it up for a quick reference, only to find myself an hour later still reading through the links to other topics.

Because this is part of a multi-volume set, the reader may be disappointed occasionally if one looks for certain topics (for instance, 'Gospel') and finds there is no such listing. This would be because the topic is covered in other volumes.

I would have argued for a bit different organisation -- inclusion of non-canonical writings under their titles, for instance, just as Dead Sea Scolls are included (for instance, there is an article of general introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls, but also some 36 other articles on specific Dead Sea Scrolls included under their title names, whereas the article on 'Apocryphal Gospels' includes reference to many of these gospels, but none merits its own article later).

This is a very minor criticism, however, of a generally excellent book.

An Extraordinary Accomplishment.......2000-12-07

The importance of a work such as this one cannot be stressed enough. In order to truly understand the New Testament, one must understand the world into which it was born. The Dictionary of New Testament Background gives the reader a comprehensive survey of the historical, social, religious, and literary context of the New Testament documents in a single volume.

Like the three previous dictionaries in the IVP series (Jesus, Paul, Later NT), this one is arranged alphabetically by topic, with plenty of cross-references. Most articles are 1,000 to 7,500 words in length, although a few contain 10,000+ words. In addition, each article is supplemented with a bibliography to guide the reader into a fuller treatment of a given topic.

The scholars who worked on this project are first-rate, most of them having published extensively in their field. Students of the New Testament will undoubtedly recognize the names of many of the contributors. The editors, to their credit, also drew from scholars in other disciplines such as archaeology, history, and classics, therefore ensuring the high quality of scholarship that the reader finds in this work.

A Worthy Testimonial.......2007-03-22

This is a handsome handbook that will become a treasure for those acquainted with Dr. Mare's contributions to academic Bible work. Its title of "background commentary" is well chosen. A contribution of selected NT verses with interspersed maps and black/white photographs at appropriate places. The verse portions are emboldened for easy location. Each NT book's proffering is of unequal length (which does not take away, however), varying from 2 pages to over 90. Its appeal will be for very young believers who need to get a "feel" for the coverage of the New Testament as well as the mature believer. It is not to be understood as a handbook to look up comments on a particular verse, because it just might not be one chosen for comment. It calls attention to matters of the force, the beauty, the correct reading, the exact rendering of select verses often mistaken or altogether obliterated. It does have a succinct introduction and outline for each book. A four-fold index concludes the volume with references (broken down to each NT book), bibliography, subject index, and Scripture index. It is a pleasurable read with or without an open Bible.

This book has a lot of very good information of taking care of your dogs health (Although most of the advice would apply to any dog). I was particularly disappointed in the section on puppy selection which was my main reason for buying this book. Very superficial information.

This is the book to have if you are interested in growing agaves, and yuccas particularly if you have an interest in growing them as landscape plants and want to know how hardy a particular species is likely to be. It has rapidly become the Bible for growers of these plants.

This book fills a real gap in information for gardeners interested in agaves, yuccas, and similar plants, such as hesperaloes. I haven't found any other book that lists so many species of these plants AND has photographs of each. The text has extensive information for both identifying and growing these plants, whereas many books on plants will emphasize one aspect or the other. In other words, this book would be useful for botanists as well as gardeners and horticulturalists.

There is also some useful information on the cold hardiness and adaptability of these plants to wetter climates. Some experimental gardeners on the east coast of the U.S. may find the minimum temperature limits listed for some plants to be a little conservative. However, the horticultural information on growing these plants, more than makes up for that.

All around, this is a very good book and would be of interest to anyone interested in growing or identifying agaves, yuccas, and similar plants.

Terrific resource.......2000-06-12

I am the librarian at the Desert Botanical Garden and this book has been a tremendous addition to our collection. I have only had it for two weeks and have already used it several times to answer reference questions. The photos are wonderful and the index is extensive. What sets this book apart from all the rest, however, is the clear and succinct format used to describe each plant. Each reference includes the botanical name, synonyms, common names, descriptions of the size, leaves, blooms, distribution, propagation, cultural requirements, similar or related species, and uses. Mary and Gary Irish have created an invaluable resource for anyone interested in agaves, yuccas and related plants.
