Book Description
Most recent wars have been complex and bloody internal conflicts driven to a significant degree by nationalism and ethnic animosity. Since the end of the Cold War, dozens of wars--in Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Somalia, the former Soviet Union, and elsewhere--have killed or displaced millions of people. Understanding and controlling these wars has become one of the most important and frustrating tasks for scholars and political leaders.
This revised and expanded edition of Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict contains essays from some of the world's leading analysts of nationalism, ethnic conflict, and internal war. The essays from the first edition have been updated and supplemented by analyses of recent conflicts and new research on the resolution of ethnic and civil wars.
The first part of the book addresses the roots of nationalistic and ethnic wars, focusing in particular on the former Yugoslavia. The second part assesses options for international action, including the use of force and the deployment of peacekeeping troops. The third part examines political challenges that often complicate attempts to prevent or end internal conflicts, including refugee flows and the special difficulties of resolving civil wars.
Customer Reviews:
Needs a lot more work .......2007-07-07
This combined book that synthesizes several articles on the ideas of nationalism and ethnic conflict is simply horrible. Not only are the articles chosen theoretically inconsistent in many places there are also problems with examples used. The argument that air power is even considered in cases of managing immigration from conflict zones is laughable. The arguments put forth about how ethnic conflicts come about are not theoretically consistent with the norms of international relations from either the realist or the neoliberal intuitionalist perspective. I was shocked that what is regarded as one of the best books on this subject would do such a poor job in representing the complex ideas related to ethnic conflicts. While this book would be useful to spark discussion it is very poor for use in teaching. There are however two useful things that can be learned from this book. One is that historical tensions do not primarily cause ethnic conflicts and more often than not have little to do with them. The second is that partitioning of areas can work for solving ethnic conflicts if the international system is willing to agree that it is impossible to solve the conflict. I am only just starting out in this area so I cannot recommend a better book but I am sure there are ones.
Ethnic Conflict.......2000-02-02
This book is a must for any student of ethnic politics combining some of the best articles in print on the subject. The reader is accessible for students at both an undergraduate and graduate level, but is written in such a fashion that anyone can follow the logic of the authors' respective arguments. Mike Brown's edited volumes are always excellent, this one is his very best.

It would seem a riddle worthy of the sphinx: how do you give children a sense of jazz music without playing a note? Chris Raschka answers loudly and clearly with the illustrated, syncopated Charlie Parker Played Be Bop. This sparse, rhythmic, repetitive text (inspired by a recording of Parker's "A Night in Tunisia") embraces and reflects the sound and feel of jazz when read aloud: "Charlie Parker played be bop. / Charlie Parker played saxophone. / The music sounded like be bop. / Never leave your cat alone." Whether in complete phrases or in nonsense refrains that taste like music in your mouth ("Alphabet alphabet, alphabet, alph, / Chickadee, chickadee, chickadee, chick, / Overshoes, overshoes, overshoes, o, / Reeti-footi, reeti-footi, reeti-footi, ree."), Raschka brings melody to the page, and rhythm to eager ears.
Raschka, whose Yo! Yes? won a Caldecott Honor, and whose Mysterious Thelonious--another ebullient, musical exploration of a jazz legend--was named a 1997 ALA Notable Book, proves once again that he is just as at home with a paintbrush as he is with a pen. His bold, quirky illustrations add movement and light to the words, buoying their already lyrical effect. Charlie Parker Played Be Bop is a colorful, whimsical romp through the world of jazz, sure to set young and old toes a-tapping. (Ages 4 to 8) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
Ever hear of Charlie Parker? The great jazz saxophone player? If you have or if you haven't, it's okay. Look at this board book and you'll hear Charlie Parker; you'll hear music in your mind. "Be bop. Fisk, fisk. Lollipop. Boomba, boomba." Look. That's Charlie swinging and spinning all over the pages. And that's Charlie's cat, waiting, waiting for him to come home....
Customer Reviews:
My baby loves Charlie Parker.......2007-09-18
I wasn't sure how my little one would respond to this book even though I love it. If I ask, "Do you want to read about Charlie Parker?," she lights up and starts literally starts to bop. The baby digs it. Just more evidence that the jazz is a universal language. I like the introduction to poetry, rhythm and randomness ("Never leave your cat alone"). I bought two other copies and gave them to my friends for their babies.
What a great book.......2007-08-16
My daughter loves this book. Started reading it to her at about the age of one and she quickly started repeating the catchy phrases. She is now 20 months old and is able to mimic what I read verbatim and has such a good time. I highly recommend this book to any parent as it not only teaches catchy phrases but keeps a tempo going.
Great Book!.......2007-07-18
If you're looking for a book for Any age child, this is it! My little ones Love it and have been quoting it since they were 15 and 28 months old. They will break into "Bebop, Fisk Fisk" at the drop of a hat, quoting the whole book.
It's a great book to get them into reading as well as get their love of rhythm and music going.
I need to get some cd's of Charlie Parker now so we can listen to him as we quote the book.
Rhythm and blues for the toddler set.......2007-04-14
My son is 18 months old and it is truly one of his favourite books. He loves to have it read to him over and over again. You can't help but get into the rhythm of the words and make up the sound of be bop as you read. It becomes a song in itself to your child. I strongly recommend it to any parent who wants to introduce music to their children at a young age beyond the joys of "Wheels on the Bus."
My son's favorite book.......2007-01-19
This book has been a favorite of my son since we first read it to him as a six month old. Some how, we "lost" it in our house around Thanksgiving and after a couple of weeks of fruitless searching, I ordered another. J squealed with delight when it arrived and had me read it to him over and over. The sing-song rhythm and repetition of words captured my son's attention. It is like reading a jazz performance.

Book Description
Twelve-year-old Jason Bell waits impatiently for Christmas 1890. Set against the carefully researched background life of a middle-class black family in Ohio a century ago, “Hamilton’s story moves along at an elegant pace, giving readers time to savor the holiday preparations.”--School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
It Didn't "Ring My Bell".......2003-06-05
The Bells of Christmas had some parts that were interesting. I would have liked to learn more about the father's handicap. However, it seemed like most of the book passed with Jason sitting by the National Road. Learning about the Road seemed to evoke the most interest from my fifth-grade class. One year of that was enough.
this book shows the strength of the family.......1997-11-14
I thought the was very interesting and heart-warming.My favorite part was when Jason and his father went and waited for thier cousins to celebrate Christmas along the National Road.It shows how much love the family shows for each other. By Cynthia Santagata

"The scale of what Roy surveys is staggering. Her pointed indictment is devastating."-The New York Times Book Review
"Reading Arundhati Roy is how the peace movement arms itself. She turns our grief and rage into courage."-Naomi Klein, author of No Logo
In her major address to the 99th annual meeting of the American Sociological Association on August 16, 2004-"Public Power in the Age of Empire," broadcast nationally on C-Span Book TV, Democracy Now! and Alternative Radio-writer Arundhati Roy brilliantly examines the limits to democracy in the world today. Bringing the same care to her prose that she brought to her Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things, Roy discusses the need for social movements to contest the occupation of Iraq and the reduction of "democracy" to elections with no meaningful alternatives allowed. She explores the dangers of the "NGO-ization of resistance," shows how governments that block nonviolent dissent in fact encourage terrorism and examines the role of the corporate media in marginalizing oppositional voices.
Arundhati Roy is the author of the novel The God of Small Things, for which she was awarded the Booker Prize in 1997. Roy has also published four essay collections: An Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire, War Talk, Power Politics and The Cost of Living and is the subject of The Checkbook and the Cruise Missile: Interviews with Arundhati Roy, edited by David Barsamian. Roy received the 2002 Lannan Award for Cultural Freedom from the Lannan Foundation. Trained as an architect, Roy lives in New Delhi, India.

Another edition of this famous book. The original was wonderful and this edition continues in the same vein. The keys are well done and easy to follow as are the illustrations. Mosses of the Gulf South.......2002-03-08
The illustrations are excellent. There are numerous keys, which I have not had much opportunity to use. This book is for the advanced student or very well prepared amateur. It is NOT a match the picture guide for the casual nature lover.
Book Description
This detailed and engaging account of Austen's life and work is arranged as a series of walking tours through the towns and countryside she knew and loved—the settings for her novels. This book introduces the people she met on her journeys and explores the country houses, churches, great estates, and elegant cities she knew, which have changed surprisingly little in the course of two centuries.

Book Description
The year is 1635, and Mary Williams and her family live in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her father, Roger, is on trial for preaching new ideas about freedom. When found guilty, he flees into the cold, telling Mary that she must trust in God's providence to see him to safety.
Roger's only hope of survival lies with the Narragansett Indians. Will Mary ever see her father again?
Customer Reviews:
Great History book for young readers.......2007-07-12
I am very impressed with the detail of this book. 2nd - 4th graders are introduced to the Puritans' struggle for religious freedom and their tendency to fall back to old patterns of persecution. Roger Williams and his family are portrayed as the real people they were, making it easy for the ready the empathize. However, the books ends with the comment that the separation of church and state has been secured by our constitution, which is untrue. The separation of church and state is an idea that came through a court decision years after the constitution was ratified.
This is a fun and adventurous book........2006-09-22
This is an adventurous book, and it is a true story. I learned that the man who founded Providence is named Roger Williams. It was nice for the kids that it was told from his daughter's point of view. I gave the book three stars because the people in the pictures were stiff and not real looking. I would recommend this book for someone who likes history.
Finding Providence Is Historically Accurate and Interesting!.......2004-04-19
I was elated to find this book, have purchased 10 copies to date for children, cousins, etc. As a 13th generation direct descendent of Roger Williams daughter Mary (later married John Sayles) who tells the simple yet historically correct and fascinating story of her father's banishment from Mass. and how they ended up "founding Rhode Island." This is simple to read for children and interesting for adults alike. I would like to recommend this for all school age children interested in learning more about our American heritage.
A book every child and adult should read........2003-04-30
I read this book to my two boys, ages 5 and 9. They enjoyed learning about such a great man. Of course, we unlike many Americans, knew something about Roger Williams before we read this book. We are descendents of his, through his son, Daniel. I was very proud to read about such a great man, who did the courageous things that he did at the time that he did them and to be able to call him Grandfather, was a treasured moment. Thank you to the Author for writing the book. What most people do not know is that Freedom of Religion and Separation of Church and State were ideas that he was the first to fight for in America. So whether you are Baptist, Catholic, Muslim or Buddhist, you should Know that the men who wrote the American Constitution, got some of their ideas from a man who lived 150 years before their time; and that he fought for you to be able to worship as you choose.

Book Description
A new guidebook series to inns, hotels and resorts that welcome you and your pet.
Customer Reviews:
Useful but not comprehensive.......2000-05-11
Helpful descriptions and paw ratings of dog-friendly hotels in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. However, they omit many of the smaller cities, and for the cities they do list it would be nice if there was a list of hotels that didn't accept dogs so you'd know they checked them. 'Doing the Northwest with your Pooch' lists many more hotels and many more cities (just no descriptions). We recommend 'Pets Welcome' as a useful additional cross-reference that is worth its price because of its hotel descriptions, but do not rely on this book exclusively. The authors donate 5% of book proceeds to the Humane Society of the United States.
Terrific.......1998-07-30
This comprehensive well designed guidbook is informative, accurate and offers new opportunities for me and my canine pals.

Five paw accommodations for your pet and more........2002-06-01
This is a wonderful concept for a book, and helpful indeed for the traveler that has a four-legged companion. A well thought out array of motels and hotels from one end of California to the other that makes travel with your dog easy and accessible. Each hotel is given a rating of paws and prices along with pertinent information necessary to your stay.
The author has also compiled lists of addresses and telephone numbers of veterinary clinics along the way, and tips for traveling with your pet on planes, and ships, as well as by car. There is also a short section on legal requirements. Check into other books by this author there are several similar books for different sections of the country. It's a must have for pet owners who enjoy traveling with there pets. Kelsana 6/01/02
