    Book Description

Insect biochemistry and molecular genetics have become enormously important sciences. Molecular genetics of drosophila has paced mammalian genetics and has facilitated many advances in mammalian genetics. Moreover, many life-threatening diseases for man are now carried chiefly by insects and our increasing knowledge of the basic science of insects may help to control these diseases.

There is no more important facet of insect science than insect hormones, the agents that allow for communication between cells and tissues. This volume updates important areas of this subject, namely: hormonal control of ecdysis; ecdysone receptors in agriculture and medicine; molecular structure of the receptor ligand binding site of ecdysone; a molecular genetic approach to the biosynthesis of the molting hormone; non-steroidal ecdysone agonists; molecular actions of juvenile hormone in drosophila, and insect neuropeptide receptors.

                    Book Description

Robert Ruark was the most influential safari writer of the latter 20th century. He was a nationally renowned columnist and author during his lifetime, and since his death in 1965, his writings have continued to inspire both hunters who travel to Africa and those who can only dream of going there. In this book, Terry Wieland has not written a biography in the strict sense, but has written about Ruark and his work, the times in which he lived, and the strange allure that Africa had for him -- an irresistible fascination Ruark repaid by immortalizing Kenya as if it were a first, tender love.

                    3 out of 5 stars A book I wish I had not read.......2005-02-16

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Robert Ruark's 'The Horn of the Hunter'. Then, I read this book. It is a little long; it is a little tedious; but it is an accurate biography. The slayer may lack the wit and style of the giant, but he nails him: dead. 'The Horn of the Hunter' is a great book when you do not know too much about the author. If you want to know about Ruark read this book. If you want to keep the magic of the 'Horn', don't.

5 out of 5 stars Covers the man, his work, and hunting in Africa.......2001-11-09

A View From A Tall Hill is an outstanding, unique selection for any avid reader of safari hunting material in general and for those already familiar with Robert Ruark's safari writings in particular. Ruark was an author, columnist, and hunter in the latter 20th century: though his career lasted less than fifteen years, he traveled extensively throughout Africa and produced newspaper reports which enlightened the world. His biography covers the man, his work, and the special attractions of hunting in Africa. Lively and revealing.

1 out of 5 stars I recommend against this book........2006-10-23

I was disappointed to have paid good money for this book. Many questions are not resolved clearly. There are four mistakes on page 2 alone. I could not possibly recommend this book to anyone, and I'm sorry I bought it. I gave it one star because I couldn't give it less.

5 out of 5 stars As far as grammar books go..........2005-12-28

this is a good one. Grammar can be a boring topic, however this book is easy to read and it explains grammar and style very simply at an affordable price. I purchased this book as a refresher. There were many rules that I had forgotten and I had been relying on the spell checker within Word to ensure my documents were grammatically correct. But, I seriously believe that it's important to have a handy reference book to look something up, if you feel spell checker isn't correct.

First published in 1995, this authoritative book has helped nearly 40,000 families raise healthy, content pets. Packed with illustrations and photos, it explains how to keep puppies healthy, put them through basic training, correct behavior problems, and integrate them into family life.

Our new baby responds to the instructions in this book wonderfully. I was worried about getting a dog, but the results we are getting by following the instructions presented her have made me really glad that I finally got a dog. I could not be more greatful for such a good instuction manual.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner!.......2004-07-09

I've been training dogs for 10 years, and I have recommended this book to all of my puppy owners! It's a great way to get through the first year of puppyhood, and have a dog you'll be proud to call yours. All of my students have found the information easy to understand, the methods easy to use, and the results are wonderful!

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive, dangerously confused, and irritating.......2003-09-09

It's easy to read, and has a few good tips, but overall I found this book very poor. The training section is broken down into stages for different-aged pups, which sounds like a good idea until you realise that training principles are the same at any age, and therefore each chapter is exasperatingly repetitive. Along with the wide spacing, big headings, short paragraphs and abundant meaningless pictures, that makes for a remarkably uninformative book. There is no discussion of major controversies such as positive versus force-based training or natural versus dry feeding; the author's preferred technique is presented as the only option and areas of huge disagreement among trainers are not even flagged. Evidently Hodgson's style appeals to some; I found it irritatingly condescending, bubbly and saccharine. Finally, the book is dangerously poorly edited: on p. 128 Hodgson says: "Don't give him free access to water yet, or he'll turn into a fountain"... then on p. 155 DeBitetto says: "Puppies need a lot of water, and restricting it can put your puppy at risk of dehydration. The only time water can be safely witheld is at night." The health section was better-written and much more informative, but you'd still be much better off buying one good training book and one good health book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!!.......2003-03-29

This book is great! It gives good insight to what the puppy is feeling and has broken down training and behavior patterns by the pups age. The book also provides good detail in health maintenance for your dog as well as a typical puppy schedule! I found the schedule to be very helpful in planning my day in order to give my pup the most attention.

The warm belly, the swinging tail, the wet nose, the big brown eyes -- these are just some of the things that make living with a puppy pure bliss. But sometimes it's too easy to forget that a puppy is more than just an adorable plaything: He is like a four-legged child, in need of love, guidance and the best care there is. The first year of a dog's life is roughly equivalent to the first eighteen years of a child's life. It's a crucial time in the development of his behavior, personality and lifetime habits, so it's important to get it right!

Enter The Good Life. In their trademark good-humored, engaging style, Mordecai Siegal and Matthew Margolis take new dog owners by the hand and explain what they should be doing to raise their dogs throughout the first year and beyond. To help along new "parents," the book breaks down the first year into clear time frames with essential information for each developmental stage of a young dog's life. From feeding to housebreaking to behavior problem solving, The Good Life is filled with invaluable tips on every aspect of caring for a puppy. Areas covered include:

How many times Ive picked up a book about dogs to read, and by the third chapter got bored.......not with this book! I find it charming, funny, USEFUL, and so entertaining! Im not looking for gossip about Movie Stars, I leave that to The GOSSIP Magazines. My interest is in Puppies, and they have more than satisfied that issue. Good luck to you guys, keep up the good work!!!

                        5 out of 5 stars Bow-WOW!.......2001-05-01

Jan Greye and Jesse Smith, who are professional dog sitters, have written a delightful book that manages to be full of useful information--things such as which breeds will run up your vet bill and how to get a puppy to take a pill--and is at the same time a joy to read. Lots of very funny anecdotal stuff about their experiences with their doggie clients and the dogs' owners. A nice departure from all those dry, encyclopedic how-to-raise-your-puppy-from-A-to-Z volumes.

As a novice french fashion doll collector, I found this book to be very helpful. I learned about the different types of fashion dolls and what to look for before I buy one. It also gives great detail on the dolls accessories, especially their dresses. I also like the fact that this book contains patterns of original french fashion gowns so you could make your own reproduction of the real thing.

Lee Reich provides a valuable guide to uncommon fruits and berries, which add an adventurous flavor to any garden. Though names like jujube, juneberry, maypop, and shipova may seem exotic at first glance, these fruits offer ample rewards to the gardener willing to go only slightly off the beaten path at local nurseries. Reliable even in the toughest garden situations, cold-hardy, and pest- and disease-resistant, they are as enticing to the beginner as to the advanced gardener. This expanded sequel to the author's celebrated Uncommon Fruits Worthy of Attention offers new fruits, new varieties, and new photos and illustrations to entice the reader into an exciting world of garden pleasure.

                                      4 out of 5 stars A word of caution.......2007-01-12

This is a very well written book. There are 23 chapters, each devoted to a single fruit or berry -- all of which are considered "lesser known" to at least the American gardening culture. The chapters all contain a lot of information on lore, characteristics, planting, culture, propogation, and harvest.

What is missing are: listings of particular cultivars that do well in certain regions of the country, certain microclimates, etc. Further, little attention is paid to climate in general with the exception of a few references to USDA zones.

Still, I recommend this book to you with the caution: find out (from a grower or a high-quality nursery in your area) which cultivars are known to work in your area. Consider a line drawn from Monterey CA to Jacksonville FL. For those living above this line, the only real concern is which varieties taste better. For those living below this line, you have the additional question of which varieties will bear fruit and actually survive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Open your garden to a wonderful range of unique edibles........2006-03-09

Lee Reich has complied a wonderful, detailed listing of "the fruits less planted". His style is very readable and the photos and illustrations compliment the written material very well. Detailed information on plant descriptions, cultivation, propagation and recommended cultivars. His vivid plant descriptions are enough to make your mouth water, and he has purposely focused on fruits that are relatively low maintenance and disease free. Plants also vary in size, so there are options for those who use containers to those who have room for full grown trees. I enjoyed the book very much, and look forward to adding many of these plants to our homestead.

                                          Book Description

In the summer of 2000, Todd B. Natenberg, a 30-year-old resident of Chicago, quit his job as a sales manager and sales trainer for a telecommunications company, started his own sales training company, sold his house and finalized a second divorce. But before embarking on his new career and his new life, he took the adventure of all adventures: volunteering on an Israeli kibbutz.

By venturing to the most contentious of places and submersing himself in one of the worldÂ's oldest and richest cultures Â- his heritage Â- Todd teaches us the only true fulfillment in life comes from connection with others. “When we share and have shared with us, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of our very beings, nothing gives the soul greater nourishment,” Todd says.

As time has passed and the Middle East is more war-torn at the time of this bookÂ's publication than ever before, ToddÂ's story also is an insight into a world that no longer exists, a time that is no more.

The Journey Within: Two Months on Kibbutz is for anyone who has ever questioned the meaning of life, but never had the courage to do anything about it.

5 out of 5 stars Find a Piece of Yourself Inside This Book.......2003-01-03

The introduction alone deeply moved me. In this excellent book, you will recognize people you know, and people you have known and loved. And if you're lucky, like the author -- you may even recognize the beauty inside yourself. Don't get me wrong; Natenburg, a basketball nut, clearly has no lack of self esteem. What is most telling about this brash yet gentle soul is his ability to admit his faults and failures.

The Journey Within: Two Months On Kibbutz reminded me of one of life's most important lessons: that no matter what journey you take as an individual, we are all, in the end, connected. And it is our choice (and duty) to try -- at least try -- to make the world a better place...one smile at a time.

5 out of 5 stars Todd Figured It Out.......2002-12-26

Todd went to the Kibbutz to find something profound, the "Meaning of Life." But what he found is that the value in life doesn't lie in the destination or even in the journey itself. The value lies in the relationships you forge with the people you meet along the way. Two enthusiastic thumbs up for this book.
