Good coffee table book.......2006-01-06
Good stories on all the greats decade by decade. Hardcore fans will know most of the horses, but not necessarily the stories of what made them great.
Wow, and Wow and Wow a GREAT BOOK !.......2003-08-04
If you ever wondered how we got to modern horse racing from the past, and who was famous in the past, then this is a MUST HAVE Book for your coffee table or library.
I almost cried when I read about Ruffian, and I remembered her tragic spill in the famous male/female match race with Foolish Pleasure. I was a child at a family friend's house and it was dark and raining, and the beautiful Ruffian went to the lead and then tragically fell sending her into immortal status.
The John Henry story is a book possible all by itself.
A great job by Mark and Mary Simon, I was very impressed and I'm in the business.

Book Description
The first comprehensive travel guide to accommodations in convents and monasteries, Bed and Blessings Italy will delight travelers from the first intriguing page to the last. From Rome to Ravello and Sienna to Sicily, Bed and Blessings Italy reveals extraordinary accommodations for budget and savvy travelers alike. Life behind the mysterious monastic walls is a journey into another time, another place -- very much in the real world, yet one step removed. Many of the houses are former palaces and villas, filled with exquisite antiques and religious artwork. All are open to people of any faith, or none at all, whether alone, as a couple or with a family.
In the Jubilee year 2000 Italy expects 30 million visitors, more than 8 times the annual amount! Many will stay in convents and monasteries, which hitherto, people have known about mainly through word-of-mouth. Now, Bed and Blessings Italy will offer travelers a real insider's guide to some of Italy's hidden treasures.
Bed and Blessings Italy is an imaginative and well-researched guide featuring 131 convents and monasteries in some of Italy's finest areas. Mother-daughter team June and Anne Walsh spent two years researching the places in their book, traversing 13 regions of Italy and visiting more than 300 sites. For each entry, the book gives a description of both the physical place and the atmosphere, as well as address, fax and phone numbers, price, number of rooms, availability of meals, languages spoken, directions, and so on. Plus, there is useful information for traveling in Italy in general -- how to make phone calls, use public transportation, etc. Sample forms are provided in Italian to ease the writing or faxing of requests. In addition, the book is illustrated with more than 50 detailed maps and color photos of some of the picturesque houses.
Customer Reviews:
It certainly was a blessing to us!.......2005-12-02
My husband and I lived in Italy for three years from 2001 to 2004. We traveled so much we could not afford to stay at a "regular" hotel every time we traveled. "Bed and Blessings" was always the first source we turned to when we started planning a trip. We found it very reliable, though by the end of our tour of duty, it was already going out of date. Glad to see that it will be updated soon. We will definitely buy the new edition before we set off on our next trip to Italy.
Each item generally contained everything we needed to know to decide if we wanted to stay there. We especially appreciated the maps and information on parking, as we often traveled by car.
Staying in convents is not something a typical spoiled and demanding American tourist should attempt. The rooms will be sparsely furnished, the beds will be lumpy, the heating will be sporadic, and the staff will rarely speak English.
But for open-minded, budget-constrained, flexible and experienced travelers, it is the only way to go. The rooms will be spotlessly clean, the location will often be exceptional, and the price will always be a fraction of what the hotel down the street is charging.
Things may have changed in the past five years, but when we were using this book, few convents accepted credit cards and most answered the phone only around mealtimes (Italian mealtimes). Some were just starting to make and confirm reservations by e-mail, but only in Italian or very broken English. Every convent had a fax machine.
Guests who stay at convents should remember where they are and adapt accordingly. Doors are often locked at 10 or 11 p.m. The staff is not available during prayer times. And if you are traveling as a couple, you might be asked if you are married.
Now that we're back home in the USA, some of our best memories (and stories) were born in the convents featured in this book.
Like the 500-year-old palazzo five blocks from the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, the one with the grand staircase and marble tiles that popped loose every time we walked on them. Or the modern hotel across the street from dock of the ferry that ran up and down the Cinque Terre coast. Or the beautiful palazzo around the corner from one of Rome's busist intersections, two blocks from one of the city's major bus hubs, where we fell asleep to sound of the motorinos (scooters) buzzing by on the street below.
Desparately Need Updating.......2003-06-12
I traveled to Italy in October of 2002 and spent one month there, relying on Bed and Blessings for accurate information on where to stay inexpensively. I was truly dissapointed. I ended up finding fellow travellers to be a more reliable source of information than "Bed and Blessings."
This book has not been updated since 1999 and over half the places I called did not have correct phone numbers in the book. Others were out of business or converted to hotels. Also, Italy now uses the Euro which is not listed in the book. One place listed in the book where I stayed, had fleas and they sufficiently dined on me. I fled the place the next morning to a local hotel.
Julia needs to get busy updating the information in the book if she wants to continue to sell it as a useful reference. I would not buy it again unless it is updated.
Very helpful.......2003-05-10
We have used this book as a starting point to plan seven trips to Italy over the past four years. For the most part, we have found the contact information reasonable accurate. We've found it still to be a very credible source, even though the information IS a couple of years old.
A bit of advice based on our experiences.
1. It may be helpful to send faxes during Italian business hours. Some of the convents seem to turn their faxes off during their night-time hours.
2. When corresponding with the convents should include your e-mail address. Recently, we've noticed that many of the convents that we fax respond to us by e-mail. This simplifies things.
3. Not all convents and monasteries answer faxes promptly. First, an overseas fax may be a significant expense for a non-profit religious organization. Second, if they have no vacancies, they may not respond. We've learned that if we don't get a response to a confirmed fax receipt, we may try once again or follow up by mail. If we still don't get a response, then we move on. Third, keep in mind that if they have a technical problem, their fax may be out of service for several days (or longer).
out of date!.......2002-08-14
I was very disappointed in this book. The information is very old and rather inadequate. The publisher should revise this book or withdraw it from the marketplace.
Very useful book.......2002-04-15
I recently returned from a trip to Italy. I stayed in one of the Rome convents referenced in this book and found the accommodations to be exactly as described in the book. The nuns were gracious and helpful and the room was very plain but clean and comfortable. I highly recommend the book for anyone traveling to Italy on a budget.
If you are using public transportation I recommend purchasing a detailed street map of Rome to help pinpoint the location of some of the properties referenced in the book.

Book Description
Easel Does It: Manga Art takes a subject with which Western audiences may not be too familiar and explains, in lucid and easy to follow text, and logical step-by-step diagrams, how to draw in this exciting and innovative style.
An introduction explains the comparatively recent origins of manga in Japanese culture, and its current impact on artists and animators in the West. A section then follows with precise instructions on the various materials required, and the range of techniques the manga artist will need to perfect, such as sketching the saucer-shaped eyes, small nose and mouth, and androgynous body; and building up layers of color to create areas of light and shade, and adding detail, with colored markers.
The remainder of the book is devoted to ten individual projects, each one focusing on easily-recognizable manga characters. The projects start off with instruction on drawing basic figures such as a young girl and boy, progress through characters in combat, and then turn to the creatures, monsters, or robots which inhabit typical manga landscapes. The final projects look at perhaps the most popular use of manga characters in comic strips, and also posters.
Customer Reviews:
Best manga drawing book I've seen yet.......2006-11-10
This easel-format book is the best manga drawing book I've looked through yet. I was disappointed with the "How to Draw Manga" series imported from Japan because most of the book was taken up by silly and far too degrading comic strips rather than manga instruction; Christopher Hart's series is more useful but a very American attempt to do a Japanese style. Ashe Raven's book spends most of its time on actual instruction, the style looks Japanese enough for me, (and there's no groping and sexually assaulting women for laughs in this book; it's less dehumanizing than some instruction books).
A dimond in the rough........2005-01-19
I will admit that I am perhaps one of the worst artist out there.
My stick figures used to burst into flames, they were that bad.
But somewhere along the line I have gotten a bit better, but still no where close to being able to even do Disney characters or Flintstones-style even.
However I found and bought this book, it really is cheap, more so with the coupon for Borders I had, so it wasn't that much of a strain on my poor college student wallet.
This book goes through step by step on some of the very basics, human movements, how to draw a hand and body, a body equals the same as 7 heads on top of each other, perspective, even some basic color ideas that I would never think of.
Yes it gets quite hard at the end, and I can not do them at my current level, but I know I will someday. The simple head drawings and body sketches this book shows how to make will get me there.
I recomend this book to both starters and experts who do not know much about how to put action or that manga/anime look to their art.
After showing it to my art class, it will become a required book to have for future quarters as long as it remains easy to get.
Try it out, worth a look.
Far better then the drawing for idots book, but skilled enough to make the Hart "how to draw" books a nice fight.
Manga Art - Easel Does it.......2004-12-08

How to Get Your Cat to Do What You Want
ASIN: 0793821940 |
Customer Reviews:
About to be owned by a Rex!.......2005-12-31
I was given this book as a gift in preparation for my new Cornish Rex kitten. I found it very informative. The author only confirmed my interest in having one of these incredible cats with personality plus++. The most important fact, for me, was her discussion of this breed's low tolerance to the pre-anesthetic, Ketamine. For the "pet quality" owner who will be spaying or neutering their Rex, this is certainly an important topic to discuss pre-operatively with your veterinarian.
Excellent book on Cornish Rexes.......2001-03-20
Greta's book is great. It is extremely informative. This is a great book for people with Cornishes in their family or ones who want to have one in their family. I learned so much more about my cat since I got her book. Excellent photos! A++++
it answered breed-specific questions.......2001-02-22
when i first got my two cornish rex, i read all that i could find on the cornish rex breed, and i discovered that there were no comprehensive books on them. i really needed some tips + how-to's specific to rexes. fortunately, greta's book provides that. the text is informative and easy to read, as well as entertaining. thanks, greta! from one owner who's happier + a little more confident in her cat care now.
A great book about those mutant cats!.......2001-02-21
This book is a wonderful reference for the Cornish Rex owner (really someone owned by a Cornish Rex!) or for people considering taking one of these balls of energy and loving, non-stop attention into their lives. These cats are a little different... and Greta Huls takes you through background, grooming, feeding, healthcare and breed standards in a very interesting, straightforward and informative way. For instance, the information on the breed's intolerance to pre-op drugs is invaluable and possibly a lifesaver. In addition, the wonderful photographs perfectly illustrate the Cornish Rex's beauty and character.
Great book for owners/lovers of Cornish Rex cats.......2001-02-21
As a devoted breeder of this wonderful breed of cats, I can wholeheartly recommend Greta's new book. She did her homework quite well and picked many breeders brains to come up with a great finished product. And a very much needed book for this breed. A+++++++++

Customer Reviews:
Self Published Garbage.......2006-04-10
With all the yapping the author of this book does about environmental impact, perhaps she should have considered the impact of wasting paper. It is obvious within seconds of picking up this book why the author had to use pay to publish crap peddler, iUniverse to get this trash on the market.
When I came across this book I was looking for something to use as a supplement to McGee & Stuckey's The Bountiful Container. I wanted a book that would get more in depth into building organic soil and using organic pest control and fertilizers. I was also hoping for more than three (well known to most gardeners) suggestions as to which companies would carry good organic seed and product selections. What I got instead was a lesson in internet book buying (check the publisher first).
Logan's book contains very little information that can't be found in the average gardening book. She does almost nothing to address the specific issues relating to container gardening and organic gardening. She addresses the issue of organic gardening in a lecturing tone by constantly pushing why organic is best, but barely touching on how to garden organically. Her section on pest control dedicates an entire page to a photo of her dog, yet doesn't give any information on how to identify different pests or how to create organic solutions. The few solutions that are mentioned are simply glanced over as though the reader already knows what they are and how to prepare them. The fertilizing section is similar in that she lists a few organic fertilizers, but doesn't make it clear how or in what potencies they should be used.
The information contained within this book is limited and basic. The formatting is clearly designed to maximize the amount of space the information can be spread into. The author clearly uses the same tricks high school students use to spread a three page paper into five pages. The primary section of this book takes up only sixty four pages (twenty of which are dedicated to poorly taken full page black and white photos), the majority of which is dedicated to lecturing on the evils of chemicals and very basic gardening information. The remaining forty or so pages are dedicated to a glossary that could fit into half that if each letter wasn't started on a separate page. Ultimately, if the author were to use a normal font size and less spacing between sections, the entire book could probably be fit into less than fifty pages. By removing the filler, the portions of this book relevant and useful to organic container gardening could be fit into a pamphlet.
I've learned my lesson. Don't waste your $12. If you want a book that addresses container gardening well (and contains at least as much information about organics) get McGee & Stuckey's The Bountiful Container. When purchased through Amazon it even costs less than this waste of paper.

Customer Reviews:
A very pleasant surprise.......2006-09-25
Having read a vast number of books on Africa and African hunters, I was looking forward to getting my copy of Jungle Man. I was under the impression that it might be a good story but told in a stilted, "stiff upper lip" kind of style. Not so! Pretorious tells his life story in a thoroghly interesting and absorbing way. There is no exaggeration in his writing, yet he manages to convey quite well the experiences of his life time. The photos are pretty ordinary (as per usual for books from that era) and there is no index. But these are minor points. You will fully enjoy reading about his adventures in Old Africa from the age he left home to manage ox wagons to his involvement in some early African films.
Well worth reading.
