4 out of 5 stars A good primier for basic child-rearing!.......1998-05-15

As a school psychologist I am often asked which books are good in regards to behavioral concerns. I find the Little People book has some good basic techniques to teach and does it in a easy to read manner. I am always sorry that it is not easier to locate in the local bookstore because I want to buy it for friends.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent resource, concise, easy reading, pullout section.......1996-12-03

The book focuses on common child-rearing behavioral problems and the easy solutions to fix them. It emphasizes catching the children in acts of good behavior instead of punishing them for bad behavior. I used the ideas put forth in the text with my own children and was delighted at how well the results showed. Anyone who is ready to pull their hair out with a specific behavioral problem concerning a child, should read this book. Not only does it offer solutions of how to turn behavior around, but it also has pullout sections for your particular concern that can be put in a convenient location. You will quickly find how to apply these methods in a broader sense to many aspects of child-rearing and socially accepted behavior. Written in small, easy to digest chapters and the author backs up his methods with proven results from his work in a behavior clinic for children

    5 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking Essays.......2004-02-14

Only Connect is a well chosen group of essays that represent most of the facets of children's literature, from picture books to young adults, from the authors' impressions to the literary critics.

Since there isn't a lot of information on this site about this book, I'll go into detail. The first section "Books and Children" includes a variety of general essays ranging from the importance of literature to children to specific archetypes/motifs that show up in children's writing. The plums of this section are John Daniel Stahl's "The imaginitive Uses of Secrecy in Children's Literature" and Tim Wynne-Jones "An Eye for Thresholds." You won't look at setting the same way again after reading these.

This is followed by 3 sections "Myth and Folklore," "Fantasy" and "Science Fiction." P.L. Travers "Unknown Childhood" is a very mythic essay that will get you thinking about what all those fairy tales actually do for the listener. Margaret Mahy's essay reveals in brief how she develops ideas. Tamora Pierce's essay on "Fantasy: Why kids read it, Why Kids Need it" describes the special quality of YA readers to a T. This essay breaths life into the genre. Terry Pratchett's "Let there be dragons" is a good overview on science fiction, and a good laugh too.

Then there is a section on Poetry, including an essay by the widely acclaimed XJ Kennedy, a section on Picture Books which ranges from Uri Shulevits' "What is a Picture Book" to David Lewis's "The Constructedness of Texts: Picture Books and the Metafictive." Ha ha! Take that you post-modernists! Children's books have had characters popping out of the pages and ripping through their own illustrations for years.

Then there are three essays on Gender Relations. Brian Attebery's "Women's Coming of Age in Fantasy" is definitely food for thought to anyone trying to plot a modern young adult book. Next is you guessed it, a section on YA literature. The Adolescent Novel of Ideas" by Peter Hollindale which talks both about realistic fiction and speculative fiction. Here's a quote to think on "The adolescent novel of ideas is marked at its best by the logic, spaciousness, and lack of compromise of its 'what if's'."

Then the book concludes with "Recent Trends and Overviews" which includes a healthy debate on the use of children's literature for certain agendas, censorship and the publishing industry. Katherine Patterson's essay is very candid, and covers both the creative process and what it is to write historical fiction. It is followed by a very sweet and short piece by Margaret Atwood.

So, if you are interested in Children's Literature, there's enough variety here I'm sure you can find something that interests you.

        Book Description

Bold, sometimes abrasive, forever passionate, Edward Curtis was the quintessential romantic visionary. Curtis struggled through an impoverished boyhood in Minnesota to become a successful society photographer in Seattle. But he soon moved far beyond weddings and studio portraits to his life's work—a multi-volume photographic and ethnogrpahic work on the vanishing world of the North American Indian.

Initially, Teddy Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan backed the ambitious project. But as the work stretched over years, Curtis found himself alone with his vision, struggling to finance himself and his crews. The 20-volume North American Indians, finally completed in 1930, cost Curtis his marriage, his friendships, his home, and his health. By the time he died in 1952, he and his monumental work had lapsed into obscurity.

In this richly designed book, Anne Makepeace, creator of an award-winning documentary on Curtis's life, reexamines the lasting impact of his work. Curtis's photographs, once ignored, now serve as a link between the romantic past and contemporary Native American communities, who have used his images to reclaim and resurrect their traditions.

5 out of 5 stars The life of an important American photographer.......2007-06-12

If you read this book you will never be able to look at a Curtis photograph in exactly the same way again. Most people have seen Curtis photographs (often not attributed to anyone in particular) of Chief Joseph, Sitting Bull, Geronimo, Red Cloud and other important Indian chiefs, but he also documented the lives of ordinary Indians. I have a number of inexpensive prints of these photographs and I knew he was an important American photographer, but that was all. This biography puts him in his proper place as one of America's great photographers and photographic artists. He was a successful Seattle photographer when in about 1900 he set himself the task of documenting the vanishing culture of the American Indian. This task resulted in the production of a 20-volume set of books on the North American Indian. He supported his work (or at least tried to) by selling subscriptions for the series. At $3000 per set they available for only the most limited of audiences. (In about 1910, $3000 was worth more than $200,000 in current dollars, so these books were only purchased by the likes of J.P.Morgan and the King of England.) He originally expected to finish in a few years, instead of the 30 years that it actually took. Instead of just abandoning the project when it became clear that even at $3000 per set he could not hope to cover his costs, he felt he had an obligation to the original subscribers to provide all 20 of the promised volumes. This cost him eventual control over the project (including the engraved plates of the photographs), his photographic studio and even his marriage. Along the way he became a pioneering ethnographer, using both glass plate photographs and early motion picture technology capture Indian life. His photographs do much more than document Indians and Indian life; his composition and use of light make them great art.

There are several books currently on the market that contain more extensive collections of Curtis photographs and if this is primarily what you want they would be better choices. Buy this book if you want to find out more about the man who took them and the price he paid to do so. This book, while not an extensive biography, details all of the aspects of his life, augmented with many of his photographs. It strikes a very good balance between text and pictures. It provides some famous Curtis photographs (such as that of Chief Joseph), some of his most artistic ones (such as "The Storm" and "An Oasis in the Bad Lands"), as well as providing a very informative text.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Windows into a Time Lost.......2007-02-07

Photography is about capturing light. The way light comes to life in these photographs, and dances over and through the subjects, is truly mesmerizing. Edward S. Curtis was undeniably an artist, and he left for his fellow mankind a wonderful gift. We benefit through his sight and likewise, his INsight. With the recognition of what was quickly vanishing, even as he strove to visually preserve it, Curtis dedicated his life to telling a story. One very true and also very sad due to its cessation.

Although certainly he achieved fame, his name is not as well known as it deserves to be. Just about any of his images contained within this collection can be termed a work of art. Each scene or vista is a pathway for the eye and mind to experience. These are unforgettable and deeply enriching. A wonderful beautiful compilation.

          Book Description

Most often viewed as a prelude to Robert E. Lee's Civil War victories of 1862, Joseph E. Johnston's campaign in Virginia early that year has been considered uninspired at best, catastrophic at worst. Steven Newton now offers a revisionist account of Johnston's operations between the York and James Rivers to show how his performance in the "Peninsular War" contributed to a crucial strategic victory for the Confederacy.

Newton acknowledges the limitations usually attributed to Johnston by other historians but suggests that assessments of the general's performance in Virginia have been colored by later controversies. He argues that contemporary sources portray Johnston as conducting his operations competently and within the strategic framework laid down in Richmond, even when he personally disagreed with those decisions. By holding his outnumbered army together and delaying the advance of Union forces, the general bought critical time for the Confederacy to recruit, organize, and arm the expanded army that would drive the Federals away from Richmond soon after Johnston himself was wounded at Seven Pines.

Focusing on the period between mid-February and late May 1862, Newton examines in detail the high-level conferences in Richmond to set strategy and the relationship of the Peninsula campaign to operations in the Shenandoah Valley and the western Confederacy. What emerges is a portrait of a general who was much more complex in thought and action than even his advocates have argued. By examining what Johnston actually accomplished rather than speculating on what he might have done, Newton shows that his overall conduct of the campaign holds up well under scrutiny.

Marked by painstaking research and analysis, Newton's reconsideration of Johnston is a key account of Confederate operations in the pivotal eastern Virginia theater in 1862. It provides an important new look at an episode in the war that until now has received little attention and helps rescue an unduly maligned leader from the shadow of Lee.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

given the title of the book, I thought the author would spend a bit more time on the Battle of Williamsburg - one of Johnston's few battles he fought before his woudning sent command over to Lee.

Given Williamsburg is a topic of interest I was taken aback by several very poor inaccuracies made by the author. For example the author stated on page 136 "...neither he nor McLaws knew the exact locations of all the forts (at Williamsburg)." This is a terrible inaccuracy as McLaws oversaw the building of the fortifications and had his command based in Williamsburg for 6 months form 61-62. This fact really makes it questionable Johnston pulling him out of the defensive line he constructed and knew better than any other commander in the army in lieu of Longstreet. The Author takes much of the OR reports regarding this battle - especially Longstreets at face value which is a mistake. The map included in the book is a borrowed one from anotehr publication (one on cavlary skirmishes on May 4 between Williamsbur and Yorktwon and major flaws - the 6th Cavalry moved up on the East not West side of Fort Magruder on May 4th, Emory did not move up to Williamsburg on the Hampton Road on May 4 and Grier was with Gibson's guns not separate as shown. The author does not even mention who or what Grier's force was. He credits Stuart as keeping Johnston "informed of the advance of the union cavalry," when in actuality Stuart managed to get cut off and nearly captured. Johnston was so uninformaed that the redoubts at Williamsburg were not even manned whent eh Union vanguard arrived. With regard to Stuarts near capture and forced march through the tidal pools of the James River the author characeterizes this as being "resourceful in every extremity in detouring..." i could go on. It is details that are needed and really impact his revisionist take on Johnston and if the book contains as many imperfections as the section on Williamsburg one should read it with much caution when determine credibility.

This is fast history based on OR accounts - a scratch of the surface with a new twist.

4 out of 5 stars Joseph E. Johnson and the Defense of Richmond.......2000-05-12

Professor Newton has written a readable account of the generalship of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston for the period from February 1862 until General Johnson's wounding at the battle of Seven Pines on May 31,1862. The book begins with a brief discussion of (1) the deteriorating trust between Johnson and Jefferson Davis; (2) the Department of Northern Virginia; and (3) the process, including both political and military factors, used in making the decision to move Johnston's army from Centerville, Virginia to be closer to Richmond. The decision and the details of withdrawal are well documented after which the author covers the Peninsula Campaign, the Battle of Seven Pines and ends with an interesting assessment of Johnston's campaign.

Some scholars and Civil War buffs have questioned the expenditure of resources to defend Richmond and speculate that a capitol located in the interior of the Confederacy would have been preferred as being easier to defend. Professor Newton outlines the strategic importance of Richmond stating that it was a critical manufacturing, transportation and financial center. The Tredegar Iron Works alone justified the defense of Richmond. In addition, the city had four major banks, had five railroads lines and was a flour-milling center . Having established the strategic necessity of defending Richmond, the writer proceeds to document General Johnston's defense of the city.

The writer objectively narrates the involvement of Lee in the decisions during this period noting areas of agreement and differences between Johnston, Lee and Davis. While Professor Newton openly states ". . the tenor of this work is pro-Johnston in terms of my assessment of the general's handling of his army" he favorably reviews Joseph Johnston's performance without engaging in "Lee bashing" the approach often used by revisionist historians to support their thesis. He gives credit and/or blame where it is due in his

opinion. This makes for interesting and provocative reading.

Professor Newton gives a balanced evaluation of General Longstreet's performance. Longstreet is depicted as neither a hero nor a villain. The writer may well have summed up Longstreet's Civil War career in one sentence when he wrote ". . that Longstreet, though undeniably talented, was incredibly willful, and his cooperation in operations of which he did not approve was notoriously poor."

The narration of the Peninsula Campaign and Seven Pines is well worth the price of the book. Especially interesting is his description of Johnston's reaction to Federal transports reaching the mouth of the Pamunkey River and the Union gunboats ascending the York River following the Confederate evacuation of Yorktown; a situation Johnson both anticipated and feared. The author observes that at Seven Pines Johnston ". . totally abdicated his responsibility for the overall conduct of the battle when he led Whiting's division down the Nine Mile Road . ." and then makes the interestingly observation that this was a similar failing of almost all Civil War commanding generals, Confederate or Union, in their first offensive battle.

The last chapter is an assessment of Johnston's campaign. Here the author states that Johnston's retreat from Williamsburg was a skillful maneuver with strategic insight. Professor Newton correctly states that Joseph Johnston did in fact successfully defend Richmond. In view of the strategic importance of Richmond in 1862 this was a significant accomplishment. The last chapter is insightful and well worth reading.

The lack of a sufficient number of maps is the book's major shortcoming.

OK, my title might be a bit harsh, but not by a lot. I bought this hoping to get a quick overview of Chinese history, with a focus on modern China. First of all, it's way too cursory in my view. But yes, in fairness, how can you cover thousands of years in a couple of chapters?

My real complaint, that prompted me to write my first Amazon review, is that this is really one of the most poorly written books I've read. I came to the chapter on Genghis Khan and had to stop reading -- it truly is written like a mediocre high school history paper, in tone, technical writing style and content. I had to put the book safely in a trash container, and am looking for another now.

I'm going to be very wary from now on of buying any Idiot's Guide, since their standards obviously are, well... geared towards idiots.

My loud and clear recommendation is to skip this one; find a book that won't make you cringe as you read.

              Book Description

In these provocative essays — some reprinted, others previously unpublished — leading environmentalist David Suzuki explores the limits of knowledge and the connectedness of all things; looks unflinchingly at the destructive forces of globalization, political shortsightedness, and greed; cautions against blind faith in science, technology, politics, and economics; and provides inspiring examples of how and where to make those changes that will matter to all of us and to future generations. He also offers a vision of hope based on our love of children and nature.

In this time of global unrest and uncertainty, Suzuki provides an important reminder of common bonds and of what really matters. Written with clarity and passion, this book is essential reading for anyone who admires David Suzuki, who wants to understand what science can and can't do, or who wants to make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars Putting into words what we all know is true.......2005-03-01

Suzuki does an excellent job of explaining the connections in
our lives with the world we live in. He reminds us that as much
as our modern societies become insulated from the planet we
live on and overly rely on modern technologies, the amount of destruction and loss of what we haven't even discovered is enormous. Dr.Suzuki is clearly one of the great thinkers of our time.

4 out of 5 stars The nature of David Suzuki.......2004-05-10

Although some of the articles in this anthology have appeared in Mr.Suzuki's earlier collections, the chance to own a healthy biopsy of all of them shouldn't be passed up. For a geneticist once focused on the chromosomes of fruit flies, his knowledge of the world encompasses a surprisingly large area. He writes of the general myopic vision that is devastating the Earth, while gently stressing the interconnectedness of all things. Any effort to prevent or even mitigate environmental and spiritual disaster should be dutifully read.

This is an excellent book for keying out most Texan woody plants. It is easily read and the illustrations are extreemly acurate. Any dendrologist would be lucky to have this in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars THE MASTIFF, AN OWNERS GUIDE TO A HAPPY HEALTHY PET.......2003-05-30

I found this book extremely informative. I found it helpful in the area of what to fed a mastiff puppy. It was a book our whole family enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. Another book to purchase along with this one, is Mastiff by Kim Campbell Thornton, this book is also very helpful. The book to avoid is Mastiff Aristocratic Guardian by DeeDee Andersson, I found the book had a lot of filler and was not helpful in the feeding area and was a great diappointment.

5 out of 5 stars the gentle giant.......2000-03-01

I thought this book was extremely informative and accurate. There are not that many books about mastiffs available and I thought this book gave many details, especially about puppy care and what to expect. I would definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide for the Potential or New Owner.......1999-12-28

If you've ever seen this book on the shelf, you've probably also noticed several other breed-specialized 'Owner's Guides' books by this publisher. Although it may seem template-ish, it is that very feature which makes this book a reliable and informative read. It's written by experts who have done the research, and people who have taken an interest in these kinds of dogs.

I chose to purchase this book when I had several inquiries about the Old English mastiff breed (i.e., their history, sizing standards, feeding and grooming needs, ideosynchrasies, and also general care for dogs). Among its highlights is a section that covers the advantages and disadvantages of owning mastiffs. This is a very important feature, particularly if you're looking into the possibilities of large-breed ownership.

Those who already own an Old English mastiff, or who are interested in rare 'mastiff' breeds such the Neopolitan, Dogue de Bordeaux, or Tibetan mastiffs, will not find this book particularly beneficial, and should look elsewhere.

All in all, I consider it a great book for mastiff enthusiasts and potential owners alike, because of its well-taken photographs and up-to-date info on such a majestic breed.

                    Happy reading!

4 out of 5 stars This book is a comprehensive introduction to mastiffs........1999-03-02

This book is a great for those who are unfamiliar with the Old English Mastiff breed. Although it offers the reader a wealth of information regarding the history, personality, and general responsibilities that go into owning one, I would have appreciated more elaboration on each topic. Also, I would have liked to have seen more photos, especially ones that show a comparison of dog and owner (to allow the reader to truly comprehend the sizeof the mastiff), as well as photos that include the apricot-colored coat (as opposed to just brindle and fawn).

I have been using this book as one of my main reference sources ever since it came out. I highly recommend it. Although I wish for a new updated edition. I hope there is one in the making!

The RHS Index is a must for any hort library. Taxonomy has changed so much in recent years that Hortus Third has long been obsolete. I found this book to be indispensible in my research, aiding me in confidently naming thousands of plants. A real bonus is that RHS has alphabetically interspersed common names throughout the latin entries. No more flipping to the back for a separate index! Worth twice the price.

What a great book! I have long sought a book that would provide a handy reference to the extraordinary range of plants out there to help me pick out what will go where in our exurban garden. This book does it. Not having photographs is actually a plus of this volume, as it does not give you an idealized picture of what your gangly specimens will actually look like; the textual descriptions are more realistic, I think.
