John D. MacDonald fan.......2006-11-30
There will never be another John D. MacDonald. This is the last of the Travis McGee series, an exciting and dynamic read. McGee finds himself pitted against the usual evils, but also finds out an important fact from his past. Great read!
A top quartile book ! Back from the past. .......2005-11-14
OK OK, so MacDonald is little retrograde, a little 50's in attitudes, a little slick, even a little puerile. But man he can write. This is his last McGee book I think. A terrific read. If you can overlook the sexism et al
I read and rate 8 to 10 books in this genre each month. I rate each book based on a 0-5 point scale. This book rated as follows: Characters: 3.5. Realism: 4. Description: 4. Ah Ha: 3.5. The Read: 4.01 Overall, the book ranked 33 out of 366 books
I had no idea MacDonald was so good.......2005-01-29
My mother collects the paperbacks, and I bought her a bunch for Christmas this year, and, on a sick day when I had nothing else to read that felt right for a sick day, I picked up the Lonely Silver Rain and read it straight through. I wish I hadn't started with the last book in the series, but I was still quite glad to have read it. The writing in this book is several cuts above that of the average mystery; in fact, the mystery or adventure or whatever you want to call it is only about 1/3 of the book. The 2/3 that is the incredible, thoughtful voice of MacDonald as Travis McGee is what has me determined to dig up copies of the whole series and read it straight through.
Highly recommended.
This One Should Have Been The Deep Blue Goodbye.......2005-01-23
I read all of the Travis McGee books in the '60s and '70s. While they were all satisfying at the time, thoroughly enjoyed, I never remembered the story lines of any. Though a top-drawer suspense-story-weaving novelist, a Chandler, Hammett, or Ross MacDonald he was not. This is primarily why, I guess, I could never recall any of his meticuously constructed stories--except this one, which turned out to be his last. What always had jumped out at me more than anything else about McDonald's books were the titles. They attracted me to them, big time--books with such lyrical pronouncements shouting out: The Long Lavender Look, The Quick Red Fox, The Deep Blue Good-By, Nightmare in Pink, The Dreadful Lemon Sky. As each came out I eagerly gathered them up. ##### But this last, The Lonely Silver Rain, must have carried forth a premonition of his own death. In crafting the Travis McGee finale, I think John D. McDonald was predicting his own demise in an accutely Karmic way. ##### This one WAS memorable.
Fittingly, last Travis McGee: entertaining, moving story.......2004-12-29
We only recently "discovered" John D MacDonald, one of the most prolific authors of the 20th century, via his last non-series novel "Barrier Island". Having enjoyed it immensely, we wanted to try one of his famous Travis McGee stories, and just happened to stumble upon "Silver Rain", the very last in that series before the author's death. By now, McGee is late middle-aged, but still a macho bachelor able to fend for himself. He promptly solves the disappearance of a near million-dollar yacht for one of his friends, but the yacht came complete with three dead bodies on it. One was the daughter of a "connected" Peruvian diplomat, and revenge was a necessary matter of honor. Directing attacks against the boat's owner and then Travis was for show despite the mob-type villains who were the real culprits. To save his own life, McGee goes on to expose the killer and see to it that "justice" (of sorts) was carried out.
This interesting yarn held our attention nicely, but a sub-plot that only blossomed and matured near the book's end rather stole the show. Someone, seemingly as a prank, was leaving pipe-cleaner kitty-cats on McGee's houseboat. Finally he stays up late one night and catches the perp, who turns out to be a lovely young woman who claims she is his daughter! She goes on to berate Travis for using her mother as a sex toy, then throwing her away when he was done with her. McGee gets the girl to join him at his bank the next day, and retrieves a poignant letter from his safety deposit bank which explained the whole thing. The mother was actually a dying woman who singled out Travis to father her daughter, then returned to die with her own family. Her own moving account of the whole story had tears streaming down our cheeks. At book's end, Travis puts his life savings into trust for his college-bound offspring.
While we have heard that MacD planned one more final McGee novel, we can't help but wonder if he knew the end was near as he penned "Rain". The emotional conclusion had an air of finality about it that left us feeling like we had known a great man. Perhaps the author's best skill was a knack for philosophical discussion of the human condition with his reader while seeming to carry on little more than a fireside chat. We commend this wise and gifted author to your attention.

I hope you will never need this book ..........2002-01-01
My husband was diagnosed with cancer when our daughter was just 9 months old. We are a little over 2 years into our struggle with his illness. I found McCue and Bonn's book immensly helpful at this difficult time. It covers everything from diagnosis, to coming home from the hospital or, God forbid, the parent's death. It also covers long term illnesses. The book is filled with practical advice. If you are struggling with a very sick parent (or other loved one) in your family right now, you need all the help you can get. After reading this book, I feel like I have the tools to help my daughter through this process whatever the outcome might be. It was incredibly helpful.
A MUST READ!.......2001-05-08
This book is a tremendous resource for families who are facing serious illness and approaching death. The book gave me helpful advice on when to seek counseling help for my children, signals of depression and failure to cope in children, how to explain about hereditary diseases, and how to help children prepare to visit the hospital. In my own situation, my husband has a progressive muscular disease that has affected his lung/breathing processes. This disease can result in immediate death and I felt that my children needed to be prepared for that. I actually handled my chidlren's first trip to the hospital badly and they both reacted negatively--I wish I would have had this resource then! From time to time I refer back to this helpful book whenever a new situation arises and after reading it, I feel that I have a better understanding of how children see an illness, how they react to it, and how to explain it to them. I'd really like to see a sequel to it that goes into areas such as what to do when the kids are in denial and don't want to know; dealing with relatives who disagree with the methods chosen on helping the child deal with the illness, and how to handle emergencies that happen at home with the ill parent. In any case, this book is a necessity for families!
A unique book to help you help others!.......2000-05-12
How to Help Children Through a Parent's Serious Illness is a wondeful resource for professional and home use! There are so many books designed to help children and parents with a child's illness but practically nothing available to help the children of adult patients deal with an adult illness, accident, or death. Kathleen and Ron are skillful and concise in sharing dozens of pointers and case examples that will help any adult in this situation. I work in a hospital and refer to the book often. We've shared it with nurses and doctors-all have found it "right on target". I know it would be a wonderful resource for use at home too. Two thumbs up to Kathleen and Ron for filling a big gap!

Raw Truth: The Art of Preparing Living Foods.......2007-03-09
I bought this book because I thought it would be fun to try some raw food. I'm not a raw vegan, but was looking for some variety and change to my diet.
For being on an leisure "raw" diet, this book didn't appeal to me. There are no pictures, and the recipes that I have tried were not tasty. In fact, one of the soups was really bad. I know there are better books out there than this one!
Delicious!.......2006-12-28
a great book with lots of delicious ideas. Raw is fun and fantastic. I am grateful to have this book. and, I feel great after feasting from the Raw Truth. a winner!!!
Love It!.......2006-08-25
This book has wonderful recipes! It provides a raw food pyramid as a guide of what to eat on a raw diet. It also gives lists for sprouting and dehydration times. Further, it describes what grains, beans, herbs and more taste like... which is very helpful if you're new to raw. Very worthwhile book... Whether you eat raw full or part-time... you'll love how you feel and look!
great book.......2005-08-01
Great layout. Great recipes. Easy to follow and make. This book is a compact raw food 'cookbook' that was very well done.
all around great book.......2005-06-19
This is a well rounded book for beginners and seasoned vets. It has a good intro for beginners including information that long time raw fooders would benefit from. The recipes are very easy to make and don't have complex ingrediants. Although I have about 10 Raw Food books, I would put this one at the top of my list.

Good Pictures - Inaccurate Information.......2005-09-11
I bought the book due to its high variety of cocktiel mutation pictures. As for a lot of the information - I agree that it is outdated and therefore may cause a problem. My avian vet agrees and has given me the heads up on what is best for my little guy. So far she has not been wrong and he has become a strong and beautiful bird since being seen by her. The best advice I can give any bird owner is to ALWAYS take your bird to an "Avian Vet" and believe their expertise over any book! Books are helpful but not always correct. The reason I mention an "Avian Vet" is because they specialize in birds. You wouldn't go to a foot doctor if you had a cold, so why would you take your bird to a cat/dog vet? There really is a difference and it shows in how they handle and understand your bird. They are sometimes hard to find, but worth looking for. Good luck and happy bird owning! :)
Outdated Information.......2003-07-21
In Matthew M. Vriends book "The Cockatiel Handbook" you will find a lot of outdated information. Following this outdated information can have a devastating result for your cockatiel, and recommend that any new cockatiel owner purchase a book about the basic care of cockatiels that is published AFTER December 1999. Follow up-to-date information from local bird clubs and organzations, as well as having annual visits to your local avian vet. If you have any questions about basic care of your cockatiel, don't hesitate to ask your vet, pet store, or local breeder.
Excellent book with many colorful photographs............2003-01-14
THE COCKATIEL HANDBOOK probably includes most everything you want to know about cockatiels. Matthew Vriends is a Dutch-born ornithologist/biologist with an advanced degree in zoology. He has written many books on birds, and traveled extensively all over the world including Australia, the native habitat of the Cockatiel. Dr. Vriends includes material on feeding, grooming, housing, health care, training and breeding of cockatiels which he has apparently done for years.
In his first chapter, Vriends includes an overview of what to consider before you buy your bird. Throughout his book he elaborates on these initial points. He says costs should be a consideration if you intend to have healthy and happy birds. He includes text and photographs that show the kinds of cages, aviaries, and breeding boxes you might build to house your birds. He covers the diseases, illnesses, and accidents that can affect bird health and vet bills. He describes physical attributes of cockatiels such as hooked beaks, growing claws, and flight feathers must be addressed to avoid problems.
Vriends suggests an appropriate diet to maintain health including the types of seeds cockatiels should eat, their vitamin requirements and vegetable preferences, and daily water intake. Vriends says the following, "No matter how hard you try, you cannot give your cockatiels the type or great variety of food they would find in the natural habitat. Birds in cages and aviaries should therefore be given a menu that is as high as possible in quality and variety...In the last few years, 'easy -to-feed pellet diets have become very popular. These types of diets can be placed in clean feeders or dispensers, and the birds can eat when and as they choose....Extruded diets are not new...but they are the newest alternative for pet birds...a cockatiel [..] that has spent it's life feeding on a diet consisting largely of seeds is not likely to become suddenly enthusiastic about extruded diets and/or pellets. Converting a bird to such a diet can sometimes be a difficult task and may require much patience. The best method...(goes on to explain his method)..." I understood Dr. Vriends to be saying pragmatic things, not championing seeds over pellets as another reviewer suggested.
Dr. Vriends also discusses the upside and downside of whether to have more than one cockatiel and how your cockatiel might relate to children and other pets. He includes a number of photographs of children holding apparently content and loving cockatiels. He suggests ways you can interact with and protect your bird including training tips, sleeping requirements, and toys.
Inaccurate food information.......2003-01-06
This book has wonderful pictures but that's not what counts. I was leafing through it in the bookstore and I found some outdated information. Firstly, the author recommends a mostly seed diet with some veggies, fruits, and pellets. It is now known that seeds are fattening and should be a small part of the cockatiel diet. Pellets are the main food source. He also said that grit should be in a cockatiel's cage to help digestion. Actually, sick cockatiels may eat too much grit and DAMAGE their digestive system. This guy needs to get the facts straight. The information in this book will subtract years from your bird's life if used.
Stinks.......2002-12-10
This guy is wierd,I don't think he's owned a cockatiel in his life!! Not for the first time bird owner because of all the false info. Why 2 stars? It does have a few helpful tips and some cute pictures.OK to have on your shelf but your going to want a better one soon.(Don't buy his lovebird book either}

good book to get you started.......2007-06-13
this is a good general information book. It will help you get started with your cockateils. It has been very helpful to me.
Don't listen to the "EXPERTS".......1998-10-18
I read with interest the review from the "professional" cockatiel person. What seems to be a 'one star' for them happens to be very useful to all of us "non-professionals".
This book has helped beginners and that is what counts. Sometimes, the "experts" are dead wrong when it comes to the simpleness of a book helping the beginning cockatiel owner. This isn't bad, because most of us could give a hoot about genetics and showing your cockatiel at contests.
Good book for beginners.
Cockatiels, Cockatiels, Cockatiels!!.......1998-09-22
This book has everything you'd ever want to know about cockatiels. I 1st got it as a Christmas present, about 3 months after I got my bird, a 16 wk. old, female Australian Gray. She is turning 3 in May of 1999. But this book helped me understand her and the way she lives. I wish to train her to speak very soon. The book gives methods on traing & taming of all sorts, a complete food guide & table of dangers, and 5 different floorplans for outdoor aviaries, plus ideas on how to create your own!! For me, it was a life-saver!! Also in the "The New... ...Handbook" series are "The new Dog Handbook" and "The new Paraket Handbook". Many others also are included, plus a series of un-revised books called "The... ...Handbook" This series had manymore species, eventhough "The New... ...Handbook" series is updated, revised, more up-to-date and has all the newest information, ideas and theories from many different scientists. Use it!!
An archaic collection of cockatiel information........1998-08-24
Having bred and raised cockatiels for 13 years, I can unequivocally state that this book contains little or no helpful information about cockatiels. In fact, there is a great deal of misinformation. For example, the genetics section contains incorrect information regarding the breeding of albino cockatiels, treating albino as if it were one gene instead of a combination of lutino and whiteface. Another good example of Mr. Vriend's use of archaic information is that he recommends peat moss in the nestbox, which can cause fungal growth leading to aspergillosis, which is a serious lung disease.
My recommendation: read a book written by someone who has recently bred cockatiels.
great basic beginner's book!.......1998-01-21
I was interested in getting cockatiels as pets & picked up this book to learn more about these birds before I bought them. I found this book to be VERY informative & gave me plenty of knowledge about these birds & led me to buy them. I keep refering back to this book almost daily since I picked up the birds a week ago.

a highly concise and informative guide.......2002-11-19
I am using this book to plan an upcoming trip, so I haven't had a chance to check the book's recommendations, but I have been to this region before.
I have purchased 4 or 5 other books to research the Loire Valley and this is the most useful. It doesn't contain much information about the chateaux in the region (generally repeated in all the other books). What it does have is some really useful photographs that help to give a sense of what the different towns are like, detailed and nuanced recommendations of places to stay and places to eat, and a guide to a few hundred or so vineyards.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone at all interested in wine, who also wants information about some of the towns and villages too small to end up in the regular tourist guides.
Become "Officier du Mérite" writing books like this!.......2000-03-20
Hubrecht Duijker knows Loire Valley and its wines better than many of us who live in this beautiful region of France. His knowledge of local treasures goes from hidden villages such as Martigné-Briand to Gérard Depardieu's castle in Tigné or Louis Métaireau and his "vignerons d'art". He will tell you where, in Mouzillon, you can picnic on this splendid small gallo-roman bridge or advise you on "restaurant de la vallée" in Clisson, an impressive place where to enjoy Muscadet wine. The author was appointed "Officier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole" by the French Government. Just to tell how authorative this "wine lover's touring guide" can be. Whether you plan to visit our region by car, riding a bicycle or a horse, you will love this book... even if you do not like wine that much!
Lively descriptions of villages, chateaux, and wine!!!.......1999-03-11
Hugh Johnson has a knack for giving very down to earth descriptions of the small villages, and the various chateaux to visit if you're into wine. He also lets you know the quaint places to stay in hidden away places, and where to stay away from so you can enjoy your experience in the wine country

Gardening Book.......2007-07-10
Great Book--I have actually tried this method for the last 8 months--I live in the desert close to Boise ID. It has cut my gardening work greatly--the mulching holds the moisture in the ground = LESS watering! and VERY FEW weeds!!!!
GREAT BOOK - GREAT AUTHOR.......2002-08-29
With arthritis, degenerative disk disease and spinal stenosis, I may very well be spending my last years in a wheelchair. With Ms. Stout's method of gardening, I will never go hungry. It is possible to plant a few plants (or harvest a few things) every day in the very early morning hours when I can stand to be outside. When my kids come see me, they lay a few bales of hay (or straw) around here and there so I can grab a handful and throw it on anything growing without permission. She was a wise old woman (with a great sense of humor)!!
Nowork gardening, easy reading, lots of information!.......1999-12-22
My mom gave me this book ages ago, which is why I have a copy (it's been out of print for a while). I finally decided to read it this winter, and have been enjoying it immensely. It's based on previously published articles, so you won't find all the information on asparagus all on one page. But her writing style is clear and easy, and so engaging and entertaining that you don't mind reading it from cover to cover. Also, there is a handy index in the back, so that you can always just go to the pages that have the useful info on any particular item. I liked the book so much that I decided to order Ruth's No Work Gardening for the Aging, Busy, and Indolent. It just arrived today and I can't wait to start reading it!

Fascinating Book.......2000-04-20
Those of us stuck in the U.S. with little contact with any other culture than our own will be fascinated by this book. Marilyn Stewart's observations about the differences between the aboriginal way of thinking and the western world's are a goldmine, and because this is her story, you feel as though you know these people and the way they think. I truly felt I had walked a mile in her shoes. While her unconventional style of writing may make the reading a little more difficult than the average fluff, it is well worth the effort. Don't miss this book!
