Lydia Chin, Rozan's sharp, funny and sexy detective who operates out of New York's Chinatown, is back in action in this lively story about the fashion industry -- from the glamorous designer studios to the sweatshops where illegal immigrants do the dirty work. Lydia knows the sweatshop scene well: her mother worked in one while she was growing up. Now she and her sometimes dangerous partner, Bill Smith, have to find out who will do anything -- including murder -- to keep a young designer from launching her new company. (Previous Lydia Chin books are China Trade and Concourse.)
Book Description
It's a long way from the cramped, dreary sweatshops where Lydia Chin's mother once sewed for the heady world of fashion. But in New York City, worlds collide. And a petite, Chinese-American P.I. can still rub shoulders with the rich, the poor, the beautiful, and the depraved. Elegant, porcelain-skinned Genna Jing is sure her latest designs are worth a fortune. That's why she is willing to pay the fifty grand being demanded by the person who stole her design book. But when Lydia--backed by her partner Bill Smith--makes the drop, everything goes wrong. Soon a simple case of high-fashion extortion leads Lydia and Bill from Chinatown to Park Avenue, and from murder to more money: a million dollars in exchange for a missing man's life....

Designing Clothes is More Dangerous than you Think.......2007-01-11
Genna Jing is an up and coming clothes designer; just prior to her first big 'showing' someone steals her design sketches. If sold, copies of her work could be massed produced in China before she gets to sell them herself. The thief wants $50,000 for the drawings. Jing hires Lydia Chin (who hires Bill Smith) to make the 'drop'. But after Lydia leaves the money in a trash can in Madison Square Park, some one takes a shot at Lydia. And so we begin.
Mandarin Plaid is a pleasant an easy read without too many quirky turns just to make it interesting. Bill again is along for the ride for no other reason than to be near Lydia. Rozan alternates the lead character for each story (the odd numbers are Lydia) and so far the odd numbers have been better, but we will see how the next Smith is.
Rozan is doing a nice job of building the relationships between Lydia and her mother, Lydia and her four brothers, Lydia and Smith, and Lydia and Chinatown/New York City. Rozan has a genius for describing the City and the people who live and work in it. The story is more a background to the people than vice versa, but it's a plausible one and entertaining (so I won't spoil it for you), enjoy this latest entry in the series.
Lydia's back in the lead - Yea!.......2002-01-03
In my recent review of "Concourse," I bemoaned the lack of Lydia in the story. The great news is that Lydia is definately back in place as the protagonist in this book. Bill Smith is still around but only in a supporting role. Why is this important?
First, the mystery itself returns to having Lydia's Chinese ancestry and life in Chinatown play a major plot in the book. Concourse was just another Caucasian mystery in many ways. It also sees the return of the lots of insights on life as a Chinese-American daughter and younger sister. In sum, this book has much of the atmosphere and humor that I enjoyed so much in the first book, "China Trade."
The mystery itself is only so-so. Lydia's hired to deliever a blackmail payment for a clothes designer. The list of possible suspects is pretty short and it wasn't hard to guess the ending. Still, I enjoyed the characters and the setting so much that I didn't really mind.
Another excellent Rozan mystery.......1999-11-29
This book loses a star for a plot that is not quite up to Rozan's usual high standard (but is still not bad). It would be a mistake to pass this one up, though, in spite of the plot flaws. The characters are terrific, as is the dialogue. The ending is very suspenseful. The best thing about this book, however, is the two detectives. After a somewhat shaky start in China Trade, Lydia Chin and Bill Smith have improved to become extremely entertaining. The chemistry between these two could burn a house down. (Rozan has wisely toned down Bill's fawning over Lydia). In sum, very worthwhile.
Best Rozan so far........1999-04-03
Of the first four Lydia Chin / Bill Smith mysteries, this is the best. Rozan does better in the books narrated by Chin than in those narrated by Smith, and the plot, while not quite believable, is more involving and coherent than in China Trade. Rozan is at her best when describing the life of Chin, living both in the tradtional world of Chinatown and in the contemporary world of Manhattan. It's a good "trash" read for your next beach day or airline flight.

Worth reading, but the conclusion of a much longer story.......2006-06-03
"The Guillyns have always been a selfish lot, you know, and it seems to me that we are incapable of forming really strong attachments. Even worse, we never seem to show any natural sense of kindness or kinship even within the family. You have only to consider the history of my clan."
"The Princess Tinne was a great and tragic lover."
"But the Governor had to go all the way back ten centuries to find her. She was probably the only one. A Guillyn finally fell in love and it turned out so badly, not one of us has been willing to try it again for a thousand years."
- Mahaffy Guillyn and Conn mac Matholwch, herein
This third volume of Edgerton's second Celydonn trilogy (the first two volumes being THE CASTLE OF THE SILVER WHEEL and THE GRAIL AND THE RING) is somewhat difficult to follow when taken on its own, having neither a cast of characters nor a prologue summarizing the story so far. THE MOON AND THE THORN deals with the aftermath of the events of THE GRAIL AND THE RING, so it can't really be read or reviewed without giving away major plot points of its predecessor. Consider yourself warned against spoilers.
That said, this second trilogy as a whole can be read before reading the first trilogy. The chapter headings, typical of both trilogies, not only supply interesting background material but at intervals supply segments of another story-within-a-story that in itself is interesting and worth reading (in this case about a king who, having defiled a magical place, must forfeit his life if his three sons cannot undo the damage - very apt, considering the efforts to set Mochdreff's magical and political problems straight that underlie the entire trilogy).
In a way, this book is concerned with showing that "happily ever after" can be much more complicated - and more work - than one might realize. The main love story of the previous two books, evidently brought to a resolution at the conclusion of the second book, turns out to have consequences obvious in retrospect - and as in the previous two books, Tryffin and Gwenliant are once again separated for much of the story, though on somewhat different terms than before. Two more pairs of would-be lovers are entangled with one another in this volume, however, so the reader isn't deprived of seeing further romantic complications.
While the events of THE GRAIL AND THE RING addressed the most deeply rooted problems of the cursed land of Mochdreff, resolving the magical issues didn't clear up the political problems and managed to introduce a new complication by offering yet another candidate for the lordship of Mochdreff, one with a claim more difficult to explain to hard-headed men used to thinking of magic as the province of wise women and philosophers rather than affecting their immediate political concerns. On the other hand, since the claims of Peredur and Math - who are developed for the first time in this book - are of equal weight, even skeptics on the issue of the "rightful" lord of Mochdreff see advantages to the possible selection of a third candidate, particularly a mature man with few pre-existing complications involving the powerful nobles of the region.
The lack of family ties and alliances is a problem as well as an advantage, of course, so Tryffin's part of the book involves not only helping Mahaffy argue the legitimacy of his claim, but arranging a marriage for him with the only daughter of one of the more powerful nobles, a young woman scarred in a freak accident years before and very skeptical of the sincerity of Mahaffy's attempts to establish their relationship on a decent footing. (Mahaffy's background established in THE CASTLE OF THE SILVER WHEEL makes this particularly interesting.)
On a magical level, Gwenliant once again enters the Inner Celydonn, this time in pursuit of a spirit set loose in THE GRAIL AND THE RING, seeking to prevent the spirit from doing further damage. She passes through several episodes of long-past history, seeking in each to identify her opponent before the opponent identifies her (and also at some points gaining more magical training). In the more mundane world, yet another politically ambitious dabbler in magic has become involved with the family of at least one of the other claimants to the Mochdreffi lordship, though this time someone more interested in co-opting the magically gifted rather than being much of a magician himself. One of the witches caught in this part of the plot - a relatively minor character in the previous book - is one of the major romantic players in this book.
"Magic makes women wise and men into lunatics. Which is to say...in neither case does it change them very much."
- Mochdreffi proverb
wow.......1999-12-10
This series just kept getting better and better. By the end, I was so totally immersed in its world that I looked at my own like a foreigner. Unbelievably good.
Great characters, fine story.......1999-01-19
Teresa Edgerton has written two very enjoyable trilogies, with well-developed characterizations and interesting conflicts. The mythical/medieval setting lends an intensity to issues of right and wrong, honor, loyalty and faith. It's been a while and I certainly hope she writes more!
excellent story...well developed fantasy world........1998-03-01
this is teresa edgerton's second trilogy. she is a great writer, using believable characters and creative stories.

Book Description
This is the first practical guide for the families of children and teenagers with celiac disease, a chronic, life-long digestive disorder. One out of 250 Americans is born with this genetic autoimmune condition, which is characterized by intolerance of gluten (wheat, rye, barley, malt, and other food additives) and often goes undiagnosed. In a supportive conversational style, Danna Korn shows that it's possible for kids with celiac disease and their families to lead happy and healthy lives.
Parents find advice on how to deal with the diagnosis, cope with emotional turmoil, and help their child develop a positive and constructive attitude. Especially important is the guidance on menu planning, grocery shopping, strategies for proper food preparation, and deciding whether or not the entire family should be gluten-fee. There's even a section on junk food!
What about the child who has difficulty sticking with the prescribed diet? Parents find tips on conditioning behavior and how and when to give kids some control over what they eat. Also covered is the challenge of controlling meals outside of the home-at birthday parties, restaurants, camp, and on vacation. Dozens of recipes help parents be creative and offer well-rounded appealing meals and snacks. There's also information about how special education laws can help with services at school.
As the only comprehensive book of its kind, Kids with Celiac Disease will be the bible for the thousands of families coping with this condition. Physicians and nutritionists too, will want to refer new families to this complete resource.

The most helpful book we own.......2007-05-14
After our one year old was diagnosed with Celiac Disease this was the first book we were told to buy. It is the most helpful book we own and it will continue to be the most helpful book we own as our little one grows up.
This book is great at helping with the psychological impact of this disease for our daughters young age, and it continues through her teen years.
We are forever grateful for this book. The author captures the feeling of every parent when they are first informed that their child has Celiac.
This book should be given out at the time of diagnosis.......2007-02-07
This book was a life-saver for me. I read it cover to cover five dreadful days into my daughter's diagnosis, and found myself laughing and crying at Danna's wit, wisdom, and caring. Never mind that she goes into great detail on the 'what to do' and 'what not to do', I actually found the chapter on dealing with this emotional rollercoaster I've been on to be the most helpful. It helps to have an author point out that yes your child's life will never be the same, and that it's probably harder on you than it is on them. It helps that she's been there, and isn't just some doctor spouting out their take on it. It helps that she went through all these things and is able to say 'You know what, just deal with it and get on with your life - I did it, and so can you'.
She writes with a lot of humor, making it a fast, easy read.
Besides all this, the information at the back of the book is a treasure -
lists of websites, phone numbers, and organizations that are invaluable to any novice celiac parent.
Excellent read for the newly diagnosed .......2006-11-10
I was loaned this book from a support group (The Happy Villi in Massachusetts) when my three year old was diagnosed with Celiac's disease. It was FANTASTIC! This support group had hundreds of books and recommended a few for me to borrow, including this one. This was by far the best book for a family with newly diagnosed child(ren) with Celiac's disease. It covers everything from how a child will feel growing up with a disease, what to do with grandparents and familys who don't understand the severity of strict diet adherence to how to navigate the birthday parties and family functions. Also gives tons of perspectives from children's points of views which was great to read.
I eventually had to return this book to the support group but I wound up buying three more (one for my family, one for my daughter's school, and one for my pediatrician).
Very Valuable.
Extreme caution.......2006-11-02
I STRONGLY recommend that you do not pick up this book unless you are already certain that you or a blood relative has been diagnosed BY A DOCTOR as having celiac disease.
There are a lot of good tips and information in this book for families who have celiac. This is a good resource for those people.
There are also a lot of misleading statements which come together to be the worst book ever for a hypochondriac to come across. While it may be true that it possible to have the disease without having any symptoms, and it may also be true that it is possible to test negative for the disease and still have it, it is also true that it is possible that you may have hypochondria and may have nothing wrong with you at all, or something much less daunting like IBS or a simple wheat allergy. Running to the doctor constantly, convinced that you or your child has developed a new symptom and must have ANOTHER blood test may be fun for some, but believe me that it causes a lot of problems for everyone around you (not least of which the child) when your fears are silly and unfounded. I speak from experience.
Beware.
Kids with Celiac Disease.......2006-02-21
If you have a child that has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, this book will explain everything you need to know about coping with the disease. It will be an invaluable tool toward helping you and your child learn more about being gluten-free and healthy. This is the best source I have found so far. It made the entire process a little less scary.

Mish-mash of frivolity.......2004-02-07
Despite a couple of good recipes to add to my files, this book is useless. Get the recipes off of the 'net and save your cash for barware. Add this book to the ever-growing pile of uninspired eyecandy issued forth from the Shagmart.
Shag art and awesome appetizers!.......2002-05-31
If you love Shag's art like I do you may buy this book just for that. Let me tell you there is so much more. I had a party this weekend and made three appetizers from this book and there were no leftovers! Jalapeno poppers made with corn flakes!!! CRAZY! If you are adventurous and love to make your guests happy this is a great book to get! Also get Shag's Tiki drinks...the Horny Monkey is a crowd pleaser as well!!
dig this funky art.......2002-02-28
I love Shag's bold style and bright colors. This is a great book to just toss on a coffee table. All my friends pick it up just to flip through the art. It's a real eye catcher and conversation starter. I bought his last book, Tiki Drinks, too, and both make a nice little collection to have on display.

OK, but not what I expected.......2002-02-13
I have been waiting for this book for several months, and was a little disappointed when I finally got it. It features 8 party ideas, such as Bongo Beat Bash and Island Luau. Each of these sections features several interesting cocktail and appetizer recepies, as well as related Shag artwork. All of this is OK but more than a bit sketchy. Except for a bare-bones introduction at the front of the book, there is nothing from the writer on how to throw these parties; even some basic fashion, decorating or organizational suggestions would have been good. I can plan a tiki party with the best of them, but it's still nice to consider other ideas.
Not bad overall, but also not a shining example of retro chic either.
Book Description
Pets play a greater role in our emotional and physical health than ever before, says the Purdue University professor who is co-author of his revised edition of Between Pets and People: The Importance of Animal Companionship. The book by Alan M. Beck of Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine and Aaron H. Katcher, psychiatrist and professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, explores the emotional and physical benefits of owning a pet and analyzes the complex relationship between people and pets. "The study of the importance of the relationship between people and animals is a growing field and has the potential to be part of the whole human-health field," says Beck, director of Purdue's Center for Applied Ethology and Human-Animal Interaction. "The social milieu on where animals fit into society has really changed in the last 13 years. We've gone from recognizing the potential of animals being a significant positive contribution to certain populations, such as the elderly, to actual documentation." Beck and Katcher note a 1992 study by an Australian cardiologist of 5,000 people who visited a clinic to find ways to reduce heart disease. The study found that people with pets had lower blood pressure and lower blood fat levels than those without pets, even though the two groups were alike in diet and exercise. The authors also point to the trend by nursing homes to incorporate animals into the routine and environment for patients. For example, in the early 1980s nursing homes typically did not allow pets to visit patients, while today nearly half of the homes have an organized program for animal therapy, Beck says. In addition to exploring physical benefits, the book covers such topics as pets as family members, pets as therapists, talking to pets, and how pets can teach us to become better companions to friends and family. The book also has a list of Web sites by such organizations as Canine Companions for Independence and the American Kennel Club. While pets provide health benefits, they can create problems, Beck and Katcher say. "There is no medicine that doesn't have some side effects," Beck says. For example, more pet ownership has public-health implications such as more dog bites, he notes. And some people whose pets die grieve to the point of illness, he says. But grief over the loss of an animal is not new, Beck says. Ancient Egyptians shaved their eyebrows after their cats died, and the Roman emperor Caligula had his horse entombed.

For Responsible Pet Owners Only . . ........1999-12-25
I would like to revise my original book review on this book.
This book is outstanding and I would highly recommend it for EVERY dog owner and POTENTIAL dog owner.
In addition to discussing the reasons why people choose pets, as well as discussing traits of pets themselves, the authors address other very important topics. Some of the topics discussed are: euthanasia; dog bites -- causes, statistics, solutions; strays -- how to identify them from wandering but owned dogs, and the health problems strays pose; dog packs -- how they operate and the dangers of packs. The authors included a table, The Urban Stray Dog, which is helpful in identifying the difference between an 'Owned Dog' and an 'Unowned Dog.' Also addressed are the diseases that dogs and pets can pass on to humans, their occurrence, and solutions to these disease threats. Not left out are issues such as dealing with people who have too many pets -- and how this type of multiple ownership causes problem for other urban dwellers; the traits of these multiple pet owners are also discussed. Dog laws are also discussed as are poop scoop laws.
The back of the book lists books and articles that the reader might find helpful under various topics discussed in the book; also listed are resource to be found on the internet on topics such as Pets in Therapy, Pet Information, Animal Behavior, Animal Care, Pet Loss, and Veterinary Education and Professional Services.
The book discussed other companion animals as well, but as a dog owner, I tended to focus my review on those issues relevant to me. I do not mean to bias you against the book by excluding mention of other companion animals addressed in the book. This book is probably one of the most comprehensive books I have read about companion animals and the issues surrounding them.
This book covers issues not dealt with in any other book I have read -- yet knowledge of these issues is necessary for being a responsible pet owner. No matter what your pet, you ought to give this book a read. It is a very easy and interesting read, the balance between active and passive voice tends to draw you into the context and makes it hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
For Serious Pet Owners Only . . ........1999-12-23
This book is a "must read" for those who consider their pet a close friend or family member.
The book is an easy read, and I found myself 3/4 of the way through it the first night. Not only is the topic interesting, but the writing skill is commendable -- it is written with a nice balance of active/passive voice.
It explained to me, in easy layman terms, the physiological benefits of pet companionship. It also explains why we psycologically find pet 'ownership' so satisfying.
Other books have explored this human-pet relationship through pictures -- "Guys and Dogs", "Woman's Best Friend", "New York Dogs" and they have done a fine job with the pictures.
The authors of "Between Pets and People" have now given us the words and facts to explain our feelings for our pets, And through the facts and explanations emerges a legitimacy for the pet-people relationship that didn't exist before. As you read the book you discover as much about yourself as you do about animal companionship.
This book belongs on your bookshelf!

Book Description
Illustrated throughout with examples from the British Library's extensive collections, and with a narrative chronology, Russian Avant-Garde Books is an important survey of Russian design and literature of the 1920s and 1930s. It emphasizes continuity with the preceding Futurist years and explores the development of graphic design and photomontage in books and journals about theater and architecture as well as in collections of poetry and prose by avant-garde writers, including the Constructivists.
From the February Revolution of 1917 to the Soviet Writers' Conference of 1934, the Russian book was at the forefront of avant-garde movements, notably Mayakovsky's LEF - "Left Front of Art. With inventive typography, the use of photomontage, and graphic styles rivaling political posters, "worker artists" set commercial standards in the design of book covers that have rarely been surpassed.
Among the best-known authors whose early books are represented here are the poets Pasternak, Kruchenykh, and Kamensky; the linguists Brik and Shklovsky; the filmmakers Eisenstein and Vertov; the theoretician Arvatov; and the artists Zdanevich, Rodchenko, Stepanova, and Lavinsky.
Susan Compton is an art historian and curator. She is author of The World Backwards: Russian Futurist Books 1912-16, which remains the standard reference on Russian avantgarde books of that period.
Book Description
Baudrillard's remarkably prescient meditation on terrorism throws light on post-9/11 delusional fears and political simulations.
Book Description
In the early years of World War II, it was an amazing feat for an Allied airman shot down over occupied Europe to make it back to England. By 1943, however, pilots and crew members, supplied with escape kits, knew they had a 50 percent chance of evading capture and returning home. An estimated 12,000 French civilians helped make this possible.
More than 5,000 airmen, many of them American, successfully traveled along escape lines organized much like those of the U.S. Underground Railroad, using secret codes and stopping in safe houses. If caught, they risked internment in a POW camp. But the French, Belgian, and Dutch civilians who aided them risked torture and even death.
Sherri Ottis writes candidly about the pilots and crewmen who walked out of occupied Europe, as well as the British intelligence agency in charge of Escape and Evasion. But her main focus is on the helpers, those patriots who have been all but ignored in English-language books and journals.
To research their stories, Ottis hiked the Pyrenees and interviewed many of the survivors. She tells of the extreme difficulty they had in avoiding Nazi infiltration by double agents; of their creativity in hiding evaders in their homes, sometimes in the midst of unexpected searches; of their generosity in sharing their meager food supplies during wartime; and of their unflagging spirit and courage in the face of a war fought on a very personal level.
Book Description
Written by a certified Arabic linguist from the Defense Language Institute with extensive background in decoding encrypted communications, this cyber-thriller uses a fictional narrative to provide a fascinating and realistic "insider's look" into technically sophisticated covert terrorist communications over the Internet. The accompanying CD-ROM allows readers to "hack along" with the story line, by viewing the same Web sites described in the book containing encrypted, covert communications.
Hacking a Terror NETWORK addresses the technical possibilities of Covert Channels in combination with a very real concern: Terrorism. The fictional story follows the planning of a terrorist plot against the United States where the terrorists use various means of Covert Channels to communicate and hide their trail. Loyal US agents must locate and decode these terrorist plots before innocent American citizens are harmed. The technology covered in the book is both real and thought provoking. Readers can realize the threat posed by these technologies by using the information included in the CD-ROM. The fictional websites, transfer logs, and other technical information are given exactly as they would be found in the real world, leaving the reader to test their own ability to decode the terrorist plot.
Cyber-Thriller focusing on increasing threat of terrorism throughout the world.
Provides a fascinating look at covert forms of communications used by terrorists over the Internet.
Accompanying CD-ROM allows users to "hack along" with the fictional narrative within the book to decrypyt.

How to write a book and make money: Find the hot topic of the day - today's is terrorism, put in your own pet theory or idea about the topic - the author's is how terrorists can use steganography to communicate and finally write a lot of fluff to combine the two. The author has written a poor story, thrown in liberal screenshots and lengthy explanation of how they work.
The author knows enough about steganography but know little about the terrorists and their culture. Of course, today any fool can sell a book about "terrorism" and most do.
Pathetic nonsense.......2006-09-19
I am quite familiar with steganography. This book is just a nonsense.
Maybe, the fictional story could be worth of it, but how pathetic. She plans it all in detail. Then suddenly, she turns herself in to authorities, but does not get an idea to keep in contact with co-conspirators to help stop them.
Interesting and Provocative Story.......2006-02-17
"Hacking a Terror Network" tells a convincing tale of Cyber Terrorism. This fictional story uses communication technology readily available today to spin a fascinating tale a potential scenarios for any criminal element and easy enough for the novice computer user. By combining emotional motivation and computer savvy, terrorist threats press US counterterrorism teams to keep ahead of electronic means of causing death and destruction.
The only thing missing are sidebars describing instructional exercises for the reader to try out these easily used technologies.
The reader might enjoy supplementing this book with another Syngress book, Zero-Day Exploit, to continue reading cyber terrorism scenarios.
The author talks about applications to use and you don't even have to google them on the internet. They're included on the accompanying CD. Additionally, Syngress gives you 4 free e-booklets online.
Good intro to stenography and its uses........2005-12-06
I found this book to be interesting both as a fiction and technical material. The plot develops around a very hot topic of these days - the war on terrorism. Unlike your "conventional" terrorists, the characters in this book use Internet and computer technology to secretly plan and launch an attack against the US.
The tools discussed in this book were new to me, although I've heard of something similar in the past. I found it difficult at times to adjust to this interesting combination of suspense fiction and the technical explanations of how certain tools work. However, overall information obtained is quite useful and encouraged me to further research the topic of "covert channels" and stenography. Besides a few grammar errors and typos that were missed by the editors, this is a good introduction to stenography, especially for computer enthusiasts and professionals. If you are looking for a page turner fiction novel you may want to look somewhere else.
On The Internet They Won't Know You Are a Dog.......2005-07-17
There are some important topics in cyber-security that are very important, but may not require an entire book to cover in detail. When it comes to online communication using "covert channels" and "stegenography", Syngress does what is excels at: they cover the topic in the context of a fictionalized narrative to give it a "real world" context. While not as excellent as some of their other efforts in this genre, Syngress still does a good, but not perfect, job with Hacking a Terror Network: The Silent Threat of Covert Channels (364 pages , SYNGRESS, 2005, ISBN 1-928994-98-9).
The context of this book is a revenge-motivated terrorist attack, borne out of the first Gulf War, against targets on the United States. Some might question how realistic the scenario is or is not, but the book weaves a story which may ring all too true today. The threat of terrorism is real, and it could/would be too easy for people with evil purposes to use covert channels to plan and coordinate an attack.
Without giving away a surprising plot twist, it is hard to envision how the scenario lain out in this book could be realistic, but then again no one on the streets envisioned 9-11 or the recent bombings in London either. What Rogers does in this book is effectively explain the different types of covert channels that can be used, tools that are readily available to use the channels, and tools that are available to detect their use. He also demonstrates that how, without a stroke of luck, it may be virtually impossible to detect the use of these channels.
The book is not written as tautly as it could be and at times you might want to say "Just get to the point!". And there are some items in the book, such as the presence of an Internet Cafe in Iraq in 1991, that require as they say in Hollywood, the "willful suspension of disbelief". Put these things aside and you will learn some new things and technologies you may not have known about before.
The bottom line is that without luck, nobody on the Internet will know you are a dog.

Book Description
Peppered with quotations from second wives from coast to coast, this conversational and often funny book looks at the plight of the second wife in today's world.
From stereotypes of trophies, bimbos and homewreckers to often grueling day-to-day struggles of modern stepmothers, SECOND WIVES is an honest and thorough book about an important issue that affects millions of women. Lively writing and personal reflections touch on important circumstances, such as the blended family, the biased court system, the plight of the divorced father, the financial ramifications of child support orders and the deep feelings that millions of women share but never discuss.
Politically incorrect and fearlessly honest, the book examines phenomena affecting today's second wives, including the ex-wife from hell, the deadbeat mom, and even the challenges facing second wives in their golden years.
Above all, it is a call to arms. With more than 50 Internet resources and plenty of! information about advocacy groups across the country, SECOND WIVES implores readers to reach out and help change the sorry state of domestic relations.

Unfair.......1999-10-19
I'm sorry, but I think this book is very unfair. I just married a man who is divorced with 3 children. His ex-wife does cause a lot of the same problems talked about in this book. But this book seems to focus totally on the ex-wife being a total ***. I thought it would focus more on the feelings you go through being a second wife and how to deal with stepchildren. I was very disappointed. It made it sound like everything is the ex-wife's fault. I don't believe that to be true. A marriage takes two people to work at it. It's never just one or the other. The failure of my husband's first marriage was a combination of the both of them. Now of course his ex doesn't believe that to be true, and she takes every opportunity to remind him of that. But she cannot be to blame for all of the problems. Life is what you make it. This book paid entirely too much attention to the ex-wife. It was very disappointing.
Finally someone who understands!.......1999-09-26
When I got this book I read the entire thing in one sitting. I was so comforted by it. Not many people understand the complexeties of stepmothering-it can be a thankless job. It is also a role that is very difficult to do anything right in. It is hard not to take things personally as a stepmom-this book really helped me. When is the next one? I would love to help write it!
Finally, validation for our feelings!.......1999-08-25
I have been a stepmother for 3 years, and still struggling with the emotional baggage it entails. This book provided the validation of my feelings as I travel this rocky road. I was surprised how angry it made me when reading about the injustice in the legal system, although I know about this first-hand. More importantly, it gives insight from other second wives and the struggles they go through. It made me realize there are actually some wives that have it worse than me!!! Lastly, this book gives valuable resource information--websites, etc.--so that you can seek out additional shoulders to cry on! Bravo, Christine Thomas!
Some really great advice.......1999-08-07
I really enjoyed this book a lot. I couldn't put it down until I finished it...in about 4 hours! I found the information about the First wife not getting the "REAL" divorce to totally (and finally) help me pinpoint what was the psycho-ex-wife-from-HEll's problem! Great information for us Step mothers. HOWEVER, it did not cover enough information for those of us that have custody of our step kids. It assumed a little too much that 95% of all mother's have custody of our kids (okay, that's actually right, since I do have custody of my son from my first marraige). But I didn't like how there was just so little information about father's having custody. Overall, I really enjoyed the information that I did get out of this book and it really related well to my situation.
A troubling paradox.......1999-05-25
I think the topic that the author addresses is an important one & one which is often overlooked in the general concern over those involved in a divorce. Second wives & stepmothers often have a very difficult time of it, directly or indirectly dealing with the fears and insecurities of an ex-wife, the complications of shared custody or the complexity of lost custody, children who are having to adjust to something they didn't create or want, often, and so on. What disturbs me, though, and the paradox here, is the author's seeming inability to recognize that many 2nd wives are also ex-wives...how can they be such victims, on the one hand (as 2nd wives) and such witches, on the other (as ex-wives)? How can all ex-wives be so bad? Is it even remotely possible that the man the 2nd wife is married to used to have a good marriage with the ex, too? Or that the reason the ex is such a terror is because of the years of broken agreements, disappointments, failed attempts at closeness, and so on, that the 2nd wife may just not have gotten to yet? While I'm certain that the author comforts and reassures many a 2nd wife that she is not alone in her frustration and difficult situation---and she often is in a VERY difficult situation---what she also does, I think, is widen the gap instead of narrowing it. If both wives, past and present, were able to focus more on seeing each other as real women dealing with really complex situations and less as enemies or stereotypes, the frustration and anger would lessen. That's what this book fails to consider, and for me, it's a flaw that can't be overlooked because it turns the book into a hostile attack on ex-wives instead of a thoughtful examination of an often-painful situation.

I am so touched - The true story for immigrant.......2005-11-29
Upon reading this book, I was instantly moved. Although I am not an African American like Mr. Tette, I am a Chinese American immigrant.
Mr. Tette's words flew off the page as I was reading his wonderful book. We may have had different specific experiences, but our journey was ultimately the same. This clearly is one book I will never forget.
The best book I ever read.......2005-07-17
Kosi Tette does an excellent job in portraying the thoughts, thought-processes and the aspirations of the African Immigrant with the undying quest to succeed in America. Anyone in this category cannot help but overwhelmingly agree that Kosi Tette has read their mind. His ability to link events of the past to challenges of the present and to dreams of the future surely make Kosi an outstanding luminary who gives high credence to the image of Africans here in the US. Kosi is surely stepping into the ranks of Anthony Kwame Appiah of Princeton & Harvard fame.
'Silent Struggle' is so well narrated and studded with analytical and philosophical thoughts that I just couldn't put the book down when I picked it up. And when I was done I was still looking for more to devour!
I will like to see a sequel - especially how Kwasi adjusts to the strife the US has had to go through with the economic recession and the terror attacks and what it means to the African Immigrant caught in the middle of all of this which can be hard to comprehend. Once again the trail-blazing skills of Kosi are going to be very well needed for a lot of us for navigating this land of seemingly endless opportunity, if approached the right way.
Excellent job. It easily makes 5-Stars!
Excellent Book.......2005-07-15
I enjoyed reading every bit of "Silent Struggle".
Mr. Tette's book does not only tell the world about the hurdles that Africans living abroad face, but, it also depicts the emotional conflicts that all foreigners face when they make a life outside of their home country. Job well done!
A Silent Struggle Indeed! .......2005-06-28
Never has the story of the African immigrant been told with such brilliant humor. This book is not only a must read for those who want insights into the experiences that mould and dictate the percepttions of the African Immigrant in the West. It also alerts all immigrants to the pitfalls that may accompany certain decisions. It gives praise to the host country where it is due and subtely alerts all to the the perils of certain dogged cultural positions and myths held by the soujourner. I highly recommend this book for your next 3 hour plane trip, light hearted, witty but very true afterall the writer lived it persoanlly or through close friends in the same perdicament.
