Book Description
The most comprehensive review available today, Marshall's Physiology of Reproduction is the classic reference source for teachers and researchers of animal reproduction. Internationally recognised leaders in their respective fields provide an analytical synopsis of the area, review current research and outline their philosophical approach to the subject. Volume 3 of the fourth edition reviews the processes of pregnancy and lactation in mammals, incorporating marsupials, non-primate eutherians and primates including man. Book one covers pregnancy from ovulation to pre-parturition, book two reviews fetal physiology, parturition and lactation. The extensive coverage of the physiology of human reproduction and lactation makes this volume a particularly important reference source for researchers in human fertility control, while the review of large animal reproduction is relevant to veterinary and para-veterinary workers.
Book Description
Drawing from nearly three dozen sources, Nemes follows the development of the soft-hackled fly through 220 years, starting with the first mention of the red spinner mayfly pattern in Richard and Charles Bowlker's 1747 Art of Angling and ending with John Reid's 1971 Clyde-Style Flies, which covers some of the most radical trout fly designs from Scotland's Clyde River. Nemes shares 162 patterns and the best fishing advice from famous anglers from the past.

Spanish.......2007-05-29
If you want to start learning Spanish, this book is a valuable tool. It is alphabetically set up, and gives you insight as to how the languauge is structured, various idioms, and notable exceptions. Even my instructor uses it frequently!! it is a great asset while you are taking classes.
pretty good.......2007-01-26
i have problems with a bunch of spanish rules in grammar and I enjoyed this group. I'm not completely sure of all of the rules now that I've used most of the book, but I'm better at them.
A very useful reference.......2006-09-06
This is a nicely organized book that covers basic topics of Spanish grammar that often confuse people new to the language. It is well organized so you can easily find answers to common questions. The editing is good and I found none of the typos that mar other books on Spanish grammar. All in all I would highly recommend this book to students of the language. It's size is fairly compact so it would be easy to carry on a trip. The reason I gave it only 4 stars is not because of the quality -- which is excellent -- but because of the brevity. I wish there were more examples and some more obscrue topics were covered. Having said that, what the book does cover is extremely well done and I'm very happy to have added this book to my collection.
A very handy quick reference- covers most grammar concepts.......2002-08-21
This a handy quick reference Spanish grammar book alphabetically arranged that tackles queries that don't require much explanation. This book cannot be used to learn Spanish however, I would say it serves as a reference for advanced students and teachers. It does not cover all grammar topics and definitely not any complex structures but can definitely act as a handy resource if you are looking to clarify a doubt or if you are in the middle of writing a composition or an essay in Spanish thus not having to consult a text book and search through several chapters and grammar points to hopefully address the one or few queries that you have. As an educator of the Spanish language, I did find it handy because whenever I had a query that can be researched in Buscalo I was able to find what I was looking for within seconds. Some examples of the grammar concepts that the book covers are: verb conjugations, moods- indicative, imperative, subjunctive and their usage, prepositions- por, para, a, de , en etc. , the usage of "hay", "hubo", numbers, pronouns of all kinds (subject, prepositional, reflexive), verbs-reflexive vs. non-reflexive, the usage of "gustar" and like verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. The purpose of the book is to clarify key grammar concepts and the most problematic ones without going into depth on the subject matter. If you are an advanced student, be it high-school or university level, a native speaker or an educator of Spanish, "Buscalo" will prove beneficial to you for quick, hands on clarifications. This is a reliable and worthy reference material for those who want to maintain grammatically correct usage when speaking or writing in the Spanish language.
An interesting resource.......2002-04-12
I found this guide to be invaluable as a professor to give me ideas on how to teach challenging topics from different angles. I can give no advice on whether this book would be of any use to a student.

William Pitt commissioned them. Alexander Pope collected them. The Prince of Wales bribed their makers to stop them from being produced. Not even the most respected and sharp-penned political cartoonist of our time wields the influences, or, it could be argued, possesses the artistic skills of the satirical engravers of England in the 18th century who elevated caricature to the level of high art. Diana Donald, a professor of art history at Manchester Metropolitan University in England, illuminates the art and meaning of more than 200 etchings by the top practitioners of the day (Rowlandson, Gillray, the Cruikshank brothers) as well as less-skilled amateurs and professionals who were popular once but are now mostly forgotten.
Book Description
The late eighteenth century in England was the first great age of cartooning, and English caricature prints of the period have long been enjoyed for their humor and vitality. Diana Donald presents the first major study of these caricatures, showing that they were a widely disseminated form of political expression and propaganda as subtle and elegant as the written word.

Really Great!.......2000-07-31
I got it for Christmas last year and it has helped me with stuff Every dogowner should know. I have a teacup poodle named Lollipop and a golden retriever named Roman, so i use it when i can.
IS SIMPLE, EASY TO READ AND EXTREMELY EDUCATIONAL.......1999-10-30
I first found and read this book in the waiting area of my local vet whilst my dear poodle had daily treatment over several days. I have studied dog behaviour, breeding, genetics, etc at Sydney Technical College and work as a dog trainer, boarder and manage a volunteer pet visiting program. I have read many, and I MEAN many books on dogs and found this one to be most definately, one of the best. It explains in non scientific language why dogs are dogs and why they do the things they do. I found it entertaining at least and extrelely educational at best. I personally, thoroughly recommend this book to anyone wishing to know and understand dogs better. I am delighted that I have found this book at Amazon and can now have my very own copy. P.S. My beautiful poodle has fully recovered from her illness!

Lot of pictures and few contents.......2001-04-30
This book is a neat collection of photographs which show the several appearances that a minimalist garden could take. Some of them are very well know for anybody who has read a gardening book once at least. Tadao Ando, John Pawson and Claudio Silvestrin among others famous architects had been chosen as well as icons in minimalism concept like Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto. There are few pictures from a wide range of gardens all around the world and a brief explanation of each one. There are some hints of what minimalism is, but it is not a deep and accurate publication about minimalism and the way a garden should be built following minimalist principles. But if you are looking for a book with beautiful and inspiring photographs and very well designed this book is what you need.
Probably expecting too much from this book........2000-07-02
I waited for the book's arrival with high expectation after reading such rave reviews from the readers in Amazon. Whilst this book is well-presented with structured discussions in the topics of extended home, courtyard gardens, roof gardens & terraces, pools & water gardens, country gardens, landscape gardens, plants & materials, I expected more meat from this book. I found that there are too many recycled pictures used ie pictures of the same thing but taken from different angles, or pictures been used from previous chapters in order to illustrate the writer's points. Many high profile properties by world famous architects are used such as by Tadao Ando, John Pawson, Glen Murcutt, Luis Barragan, & so forth but then again, their works were already covered in other architectural or landscaping books. Therefore, for avid readers like myself, most of the freshness is no longer there. Having said that, index provided at the end of the book (containing suggested plants for minimalist gardens) is very handy indeed. The writer is helpful enough to suggest what goes with what. Some pictures of the plants are featured & some don't which could be quite frustrating at times but then again, I might be expecting too much. On the bright side, there's a website provided for those readers who wish to seek further info upon the writer. I wouldn't say this book is the ultimate or the must have for the minimalist garden but then again, it's a book worth looking into. I wish this book contains more discussion & pictures on those historical Japanese zen gardens so that we could understand in-depth about the fundamental of minimalist garden but alas, only the world famous Ryoan-ji garden in Kyoto, Japan is featured, which is only been touched upon briefly. One of the highlight of that garden is that irrespective of where you stand in that garden, you would always see only 14 stones rather than the whole 15 which is supposed to be there, which implies to you the ingenuity & the clever planning of the landscape architect of the past (which isn't even mentioned in this book!) Then again, I might be expecting too much. Be warned that some suggested planting in the book might not be practical in the long run despite that the pictures illustrated look a million bucks. For examples, the usage of silver birch trees, they might look good now in cluster planting or when they are small but when they have grown, & when they are going to seed, they could be a pain in the backside. From our experience, axe would come in rather handy in those situation. Planting of various kinds of grasses could be nice but unless you maintain them on regular basis, they might look rather messy in the end. Whilst minimalist garden provides the serene effect, unless we use restrain & commitment to maintain, it might not be the easiest garden to have. To achieve the nice effects as illustrated in the pictures, substantial money needs to be expended such as frameless conservatory. Desert garden is only workable if the weather of the place is suitable. The desert plants would only rot to the root if it is introduced in an equatorial countries, for argument's sake. In that token, the writer should discuss not only the pros of his suggestions but also their cons as well.
Great inspiration.......2000-03-31
What stands out about this book are the incredible photographs, showing the endless possibilities using textures, colors and shapes in designing gardens and landscapes. This is not a book about traditional garden design but rather about architectural landscapes. Wonderful layout and pictures that really inspire.
Detail, utility, beauty.......2000-02-23
If you're looking for an invaluable resource to assist you in the creation and enjoyment of a certain type of streamlined garden, you've found it. *The Minimalist Garden* is a trove of useful and detailed information about the theory and praxis of, well, minimalist gardening. I was thrilled to find that such a book exists, and happier still to put it to use. I particularly liked the detailed guides in the rear section, and the overall sense that minimalism need mean neither a slavish imitation of Ryoan-ji nor a flat modernist sea of polished granite. My only caveats are that the book is riddled with typos and misprints - which is simply unacceptable in any book, let alone a Monacelli tome that'll set you back $50 - and that too many of the photographs used to illustrate the projects are recycled from the front section. And (a quibble really) it would have been nice to see the project that Larry Ellison decreed for his stately pleasure-dome, instead of Charles Jencks' soi-disant "chaos" garden, which is really starting to get overexposed, aside from being a misprision of contemporary complexity theory. Overall, the book you want and need if you find both elements in the title appealing.
Inspirational Garden Book of the Year.......1999-12-21
We are very pleased to announce that 'The Minimalist Garden' has been awarded the Inspirational Garden Book of the Year 1999 by the Garden Writers' Guild in London.

Book Description
A Time magazine "Best Book" of 1994
This is the compelling personal narrative of Jade Ngoc Quang Huynh, who was born in South Vietnam in 1958. He survived the war in Vietnam to become a university student in 1974. But because the Hanoi government policy was to persecute writers, intellectuals, and any suspected enemies of the state, Huynh was sent to a labor camp. South Wind Changing tells the riveting story of this early existence, his escape from Vietnam, his time in a Thai refugee camp, and the eventual new life he was able to carve out for himself in the United States. Here, where he first learned English while working at McDonalds, he was finally able to complete his education. In this well-written Asian-American memoir we encounter a remarkable life of struggle and survival, dreams and determination, imperialism and immigration, and other key twentieth-century experiences.
Customer Reviews:
A harrowing escape........2002-01-18
The author was a college student when the communists invaded Saigon and sent him to a reeducation camp. He was neither a politician nor a military man.
There he witnessed the cruelty of the wardens who starved, beat, and killed prisoners whenever they liked it. He was able to escape from the camp while accompanying an injured Viet Cong cadre to the hospital. He escaped to Thailand by boat and went on to graduate from Bennington College and Brown University after flipping burgers for some time.
This memoir describes the events from the time he was a highschooler in Vietnam until his enrollment at Bennington College. The resilience and courage of the author could only equal his academic success and his lyric prose.
This Wind Cries Unmerrily.......2000-05-12
This is a powerful story of survival and eventually escape from the jungle re-education camps of post-war Viet Nam.
See, perhaps for the first time, the untold side of this tragic piece of history. Huynh's prose is precise and poetic, at times transcending the brutal realism of the story in order to reach the spiritual core that held him together through his experience.
This is an important book for anyone who is interested in this time period, and more importantly, where we, the US and Viet Nam, will go from here.
