A Smorgasbord of a Buffet.......2006-04-26
Two years ago, I had the privilege of working with Ms. Bernard's husband, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad. What made that time such a rich experience was the opportunity to work with someone whose intellect had two rare qualities. First, he was a true Renaissance Man, who not only possessed an impressive breadth of knowledge, but also a similar breadth of abilities in which to apply it. Second, although like all intellectuals, he based his decisions on theories and doctrine, he always understood that, like even the best people, every idea has its limitations.
On the strength of the evidence in this book, Ms. Bernard shares these same rare traits. It is the work of a Renaissance mind with an ability to apply her knowledge in many ways: this book is at once a droll social satire, a sharp murder mystery, an acute observation of Muslim mores and a feminist tract. It also displays a knowledge that doctrine and ideas are limited by how they reflect the real world, not the other way around.
Unlike any other feminist document, however, this one appeals to men as well because it does not treat men as the enemy, but appeals to our better nature. The story is told partly through the eyes of men, which allows men to see the nature of women in the Muslim world.
One or two of the people I shared this with found the resolution of the mystery somewhat disappointing, but this was because they were expecting a nice tight British drawing room solution. Any one who is familiar with Muslim counties knows the premium put on resolutions of conflict in a way which puts the interests of society first. The ending reflects that perfectly.
You will not be disappointed with this book.
Delightful debut novel set in Pakistan.......2003-09-17
Cheryl Benard plunks us down in Pakistan with a socially inept American businessman, adds a murder to the stew, sprinkles liberally with women hidden beneath chadors - and stirs in wicked funny narrative. The author is obviously familiar with Pakistan; although she is not a native, she strews her brew with stories about the locals: the police investigator and his modern wife, an ex-pat American who is a champion of the poorest of the poor, and a girl enslaved in a wealthy man's home. Each side character raises timely moral issues within the strictures of the Taliban who lurk in a nearby refugee camp. In spite of this heavy background, Moghul Buffet entertains at every step along the way.
Interesting but still fun look at Pakistani society..........2003-03-22
While this book is technically a mystery, it is more effective as an occasionally black comic look at modern Pakistani society and the way it interacts with westerners. The plot of the novel is rather convoluted: it follows a series of murders starting with the apparent murder of an American business man. However, this book is both much more and much less than a standard murder mystery. The plot quickly develops numerous subplots involving a mysterious woman seemingly involved with all the murders, a fundamentalist Iman, the birth of the Taliban, not to mention to complex relations between modern men and women in Pakistan's upper classes... hence the title, Moghul Buffet. The book has a little of everything.
The subplots and depth of characterizations of some of the main characters are the books best qualities. As a mystery, the story is rather convoluted and in the end not completely resolved. Some things are left only implied, and some are never really explained at all. It wasn't the best mystery I've ever read... but it was an incredibly interesting book for the way in which it examines Pakistan today, and especially the role of women in Pakistani society. The book is also fun. The author has an understated sense of humor all through her story... and yet she is always detached, also.
I should also say I was in Peshawar some 15 years ago and from what I remember the author's depiction of this place is quite accurate.... go ahead and read the book, you won't be sorry!
Jumbled dish .. no moghul buffet.......2002-11-16
This is a strange book, shortly it has no purpose being a book. Moghul or Buffet or Peshawar really have nothing to do with the book it could be in timbktoo and still be boring. The plot is not only confusing but totally bizzare and left for the reader to imagine in the detail. Murder and sex is mixed in at odd places without purpose. This is not a novel, or a story, tt's a gibberish. Odd collection of minor facts arranged to no end. Try hard as you may you can't like anything about the book, neither plot, nor locale nor characters or the writing is of any consequence and one would do well without dwelling on them.
Timely and interesting.......2002-07-23
When businessman Micky Malone disappears from Peshawar on the Pakistani/Afghan border, the Pakistani government becomes alarmed and sends out Detective Iqbal to investigate. As the body count rises Iqbal struggles to find the murderer. He is hampered by his lack of understanding about how the women of Pakistan think and this leads to a great many comic moments and wrong deductions during the investigation. This is a fascinating look at a country in turmoil and also features a brief glimpse of the Taliban before they came to power in Afghanistan

Customer Reviews:
The Worst Loss Helped Me the Most.......2007-09-30
I lost my beloved son four months ago in a motorcycle accident. He was 24 years old. I have read 7 different grief books written for bereaved parents. This book, The Worst Loss, is by far the best I have read. It is so hopeful, and describes very gently what grief is like for parents. I saw myself in the pages, over and over, and it was the most comforting book I have encountered. The book is well organized, taking you through the stages of grief and along the way, it describes what other parents have gone through and what they have found helpful to help themselves move through their grief. It also stresses that we each have our own timetable for grief and to not rush yourself, nor let anyone rush you through your grief.
Out of the all the grief books I've read, this book, and A Broken Heart Still Beats, are the only books I'm going to keep, as a reference, or to read again. A Broken Heart Still Beats is comforting in a different way, it is not a guide for grief like The Worst Loss, it is a compilation of literary writings on loss of children and it is beautiful.
The Worst Loss.......2007-05-16
Very good must read if you have gone through a family loss. It may be difficult for the Mother of a child. As an outsider it was very good for me as the step father.
The Worst Loss.......2007-01-17
As a bereaved parent and facilitator of A Compassionate Friends support group, this is the book I recommend all the time as one of the best. It covers every aspect of the grief after losing a child. I purchased many so that they will be available for all the newly bereaved.
The Worst Lost.......2006-08-28
This book was a wonderful tool in coping with a parents loss of a child. It was given to me when my husband and I lost our youngest daughter seven years ago and I have had several people that I know loose their own child and I gave the book to them. I never received a response from one of the couples but the most recent book that I bought the mother has thank me over and over again.
Too raw.......2006-04-04
I found this book too raw to finish reading, and left me feeling totally hopeless about whether or not I would survive. I started reading this book just a few weeks after my son's death; perhaps if I had waited I would have found it more helpful.

Although it's true that vegetarianism passed through an unfortunate period when it was best known for dishes like soybean, brown rice, and sunflower seed casseroles, Jeanne Lemlin's Vegetarian Classics offers fresh, flavorful, healthy, meatless wonders like Roasted Red Pepper Hummus; Romaine with Apples, Walnuts, and Blue Cheese; and Classic Vegetable Pot Pie. Lemlin's vegetarian dishes will appeal to everyone. Even if you're a meat eater, Lemlin reminds us, you still need side dishes and starters, and sometimes even a vegetarian meal.
Lemlin's recipes are simple and easy to follow, and very few require any advance preparation. A glossary covers the more unusual ingredients she uses, but there's nothing more outrageous here than tomatillos, couscous, and wasabi. A family-friendly collection, Lemlin includes favorites such as Classic Currant Scones, Portobello Mushroom Sandwiches with Lemon Garlic Mayonnaise, and Baked Macaroni and Smoked Cheese, but she'll also spice up your repertoire with dishes such as Crunchy Thai Noodle Salad, Curried Butternut Squash Soup with Coconut Milk, and Upside-Down Pear Gingerbread.
In a culinary world full of complicated food that takes forever to prepare, Lemlin's Vegetarian Classics is a breath of fresh air--whether you're looking for purely vegetarian menus or just quick and easy recipes for delectable meals. --Leora Y. Bloom

Vegetarian Classics Sets the Standard.......2006-12-10
I own tens of vegetarian cookbooks, but the one that I depend on is Jeanne Lemlin's Vegetarian Classics. There isn't a bad recipe in the book! You can open the book to any page and find a recipe that is bound to make your "favorites" list. In the back of the book, Lemlin has conveniently made a menu guide, so that whether you're cooking for company or cooking casually, you'll know the perfect set of dishes to pair together. Many recipes include a "tip" section, that either allows you to substitute ingredients in the recipe and customize the flavors to your tastes, or gives you advice to make the recipe a no-brainer. I also love the stories that accompany the recipes. I can't commend Lemlin enough for her thoughtful cookbook! (The only negative comments I have are that there are no pictures in this book and some of the recipes are higher in fat than I'd like to consume.) I can't wait for her next cookbook!
Best vegetarian cookbook EVER!!!!!!.......2004-07-29
I cannot say enough good things about this cookbook. I think it would be safe to say that I have close to 30 vegetarian cookbooks, and this is the only one I've been satisfied with. I've made close to 20 recipes out of this cookbook so far, and EVERY single one has been a hit---not only with me but with my non-vegetarian husband. It is SO hard to find a vegetarian cookbook that actually has tasty recipes made from ingredients that are easily accessible, and this book offers just that.
The best thing about this book is that I am now willing to make recipes out of it that wouldn't otherwise sound appealing to me, since I have no doubt that they will be delicious nonetheless. I would not hesitate to try a new recipe from this cookbook while serving guests, either, which I can't say about any of my other books.
My only complaint, if I had to make one, would be that there aren't any recipes that use seitan, which is one of my favorite vegetarian staples. I don't know if any of Lemlin's other cookbooks (which I now plan to purchase) make up for that, but it's only a minor complaint, since all the recipes are so good anyway.
In sum, if you are a vegetarian, or even if you aren't, buy this cookbook NOW! I'm so glad that I happened upon it---it has really energized my cooking.
A Really Great Vegetarian Cookbook.......2003-07-17
'Vegetarian Classics' was my first cookbook by Jeanne Lemlin, author of 'Quick Vegetarian Pleasures.' This is one of the best vegetarian cookbooks I've bought. I use 'Vegetarian Classics' along side my 'Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook.' There's 300 great recipes for every course and meal. I find this differs from other cookbooks which has interesting introduction and history of vegeterian origins. Did you know that St. Franics of Assisi, Leonardo da Vinci, Percy B. Shelley and George Bernard Shaw were all vegetarians? There's an alphabetical list of food ingredients used in the recipes from barley to wheat berries. It explains what each food is and it's use.
The book is easy to follow as every food is put in it's own category starting with the basics and appetizers to everything from soups, salads, breads, side dishes, all types of pies, pastas, stovetop cooking and desserts. In the back there is a handy menu layout to give you ideas for casual, elegant, summer and holiday meals. In each section Lemlin has side notes and colored blocks of additional information and tips like for perfect brown rice, about olives with an excellent recipe for marinated olives, frittatas, cooking beans, choosing & preparing potatoes, successful puff pastry tarts, cookies and polenta are just a few of the items you'll find in the book. Most of the recipes are simple and easy to follow instructions. I love the guide to light breads, flaky scones and tender muffins. The masala chai is heavenly and the mixed berry smoothie yummy. Even if you're a semi-vegetarian or not, and just looking for new ways to cook your veggies this book is excellent!
Ease of Cooking.......2002-12-26
I have all of her cookbooks. I like them because they taste good and are simple. These are taste that grown-ups enjoy. As well as children. With all of her cookbooks I think she has made and worked on all of the receipes. Some cookbooks I know they couldn't made the receipes just from the taste. This book is the one I gave for Holiday Gifts and Weddings. The soups are wonderful in this book. I have made them all and everyone loves them. If I had to grab one cookbook and the house was on fire this is it.
Vegetarian Classics: 300 Essential Recipes.......2001-08-28
I am an avid fan of Jeanne Lemlin's and own all of her cookbooks. I learned to cook from her first book which is falling apart from so much use. Her latest book, Vegetarian Classics, is one you should own regardless of whether or not you are a vegetarian. It is just wicked good food. I made the Thai noodle salad and it was as good as any from my Oriental cookbooks, with no hard-to-find ingredients. Jeanne makes certain her clear and easy recipes work, letting her family and friends be her judges. Hurry and order this book so you won't eat another meal of bland, boring food.

Great basics and wonderful menus.......2007-01-03
There's a section at the front of the book that explains most of the ingredients - where to buy, how to store and use - great for people who are a little shy about using new ingredients. It's a good book for beginners or people who are experimenting with adding more vegetarian options to their diet. There is a section on planning meals at the back that lets you put together a menu of complementary items and makes it easy to ensure good and balanced nutrition.
Directions are clear and interesting information is given about food and its uses, as well as easy-to-follow instructions for creating some kitchen basics so you don't have to succumb to store-bought preparations.
Only criticism is, I wish it was spiral bound or had one of those lay-flat bindings to keep it open on the countertop.
Highly recommended.
Love Jeanne Lemlin's Cookbooks.......2006-11-12
I've been collecting vegetarian cookbooks for years. Some I seldom use except for a favorite recipe or two. But Jeanne Lemlin's cookbooks are on my favorites list and I use them often. Her recipes are delicious, easy to prepare and satisfying to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. I own all of her cookbooks and would rejoice if she were to publish another one.
Not a Bad recipe in the book.......2005-12-17
Using mostly kitchen shelf ingredients, Ms. Lemlin's book has provided our family with wonderful breakfast lunch and dinner recipes. Honestly, there is not one bad recipe in the bunch. I first took this book out of the library, paid lots of late fines and eventually, reluctantly, took the book back. My daughter bought it for me, and now I am buying her and her sister a copy of the book. The techniques are simple, the ingredients easily available and the outcome is consistent every time. I highly recommend this for either vegetarians or those who simply enjoy wonderful interesting food.
Superior Recipes at a Superior Value, but not Classic.......2003-11-09
This cookbook is a superior value, especially for casual cooks who wish to increase the number of vegetarian meals in their diet. It presents an excellent variety of dishes which avoid the preconceptions of a vegetarian regimen by presenting a wide variety of vegetable, grain, bean, and pasta dishes, avoiding a heavy concentration on the expected vegetable proteins. Herein lies the irony of the book's title. By successfully including a very wide variety of recipes and by having no reservations about using dairy and egg products in the recipes, Ms. Lemlin probably ends up with a volume where `classic' vegetarian dishes are very much in the minority. I think a major hint that the title was given simply for marketing effect is the fact that Jeanne at no time gives a definition of what she considers a `classic' vegetarian dish. I certainly don't know what that definition may be. That said, let me repeat that this is a very good cookbook.
When I began reading this cookbook in order to review it, I set out with the deliberate intention of finding things which would justify fewer than five (5) stars, since I seem to be giving a lot of five star reviews lately. I am happy to say I did not find any egregious errors aside from the inappropriateness of the title. I will not hold that against the book. I will only warn you again, dear reader, that the title may be misleading.
The only issue of substance I have with the book is it's treatment of rice dishes. There is not a single risotto recipe in the whole book. And, what, I ask you, may be a more classic meatless dish than mushroom risotto made with a vegetable stock. Otherwise, the treatment of rice is also a bit skimpy. The author relies on the conventional wisdom of two parts water to one part rice for cooking white rice. Even a cursory glance at the back of the Uncle Ben's box shows this is not strictly true. Many sources concur that a less than two to one ratio is always better, and the relative amount of water should decrease as the amount of rice increases. Fortunately, there are numerous books specializing in rice cookery which I recommend you consult. An especially good discussion of plain rice cookery can be found in John Thorne's book `A Pot on the Fire'. Another minor rice gaff is when Ms. Lemlin says arborio rice is very short grained. I believe it is actually a medium length rice. Still very good for risotto of course.
As this book has some 300 recipes and can be bought for less than $12 dollars, I consider this a great bargain, considering the quality of the recipes. For the hard cover at $30, I would give it only 4 stars. For the paperback, I give it the full five!

Great book for a true cat person.......2006-12-19
The author takes into account that a cat is not just a pet, but a living creature. Like all living creatures, not every problem can be solved with sticky tape or some expensive product that may not have a high rate of success. It has some great insight about how to deal with typical cat issues. Though many cat issues are not simple to solve, she is more in tune with cat behavior than most cat behaviorist books I have read. I refer to this book quite regularly.

As a new and small collector of Oriental rugs I found Middleton's book a great source of information for a beginner. It's loaded with great color photos, is easy to read and is laid out very well. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to start an education on Oriental rugs.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the potato was berated, feared, and loathed. It was blamed for everything from population explosions to population implosions, not to mention social upheaval and financial despair. Yet now, with the luxury of hindsight, Larry Zuckerman regards the potato as a saving grace for Western civilization, a crop that protected populations from starvation, encouraged self-sufficiency, and improved the lives of ordinary people. The potato's roller-coaster journey from dreary boiled peasant food into the most widely consumed vegetable on the planet is chronicled in this refreshing history lesson. The Potato goes way beyond the usual scope of spud history, which commonly focuses on the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. Although this disaster is a key event in the book, the potato's broader influence in the Western world was far more complex--changing the shape of agrarian societies, triggering world emigration, and even influencing social-welfare reforms. Snippets from journals, newspaper editorials, and government documents make this a convincing and fascinating glimpse of four centuries' worth of a vegetable to which we normally wouldn't give a second thought. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
The Potato tells the story of how a humble vegetable, once regarded as trash food, had as revolutionary an impact on Western history as the railroad or the automobile. Using Ireland, England, France, and the United States as examples, Larry Zuckerman shows how daily life from the 1770s until World War I would have been unrecognizable-perhaps impossible-without the potato, which functioned as fast food, famine insurance, fuel and labor saver, budget stretcher, and bank loan, as well as delicacy. Drawing on personal diaries, contemporaneous newspaper accounts, and other primary sources, this is popular social history at its liveliest and most illuminating.

TEX has always been regarded as the most elegant and powerful system for computer typesetting. However, its widespread use beyond academia was hampered by its complexity. Recently, fairly good TEX implementations have come out for PC's putting TEX on the disks of many people including writers, designers, desktop publishers, and engineers. Consequently, interest in TEX has surged. What is needed at this point is a book that teaches step-by-step how to use TEX, illustrating each step with relevant examples. This is exactly what S. v. Bechtolsheim's book does. It is a tutorial and guide for the first-time user of TEX, as well as a reference for the more experienced "TEXpert." TEX in Practice will appear as a four volume set, starting with TEX in Practice, Volume 1: Basics; TEX in Practice, Volume 2: Paragraphs, Math and Fonts; TEX in Practice, Volume 3: Tokens, Macros; TEX in Practice, Volume 4: Output Routines, Tables. TEX in Practice will be an indispensable reference for the TEX community and a guide through the first step for the TEX novice.
