Verry verry British..........2007-03-25
This is one of my favorite Mrs. Jefferies books and I've liked them all. The lot of the Victorian British servant was not an easy one, so fortunate indeed are the servants employed by Inspector Witherspoon. Led by their kind and efficient housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries has taken charge of them all, including the unsuspecting Inspector, and all of them are the better for it. Mrs. Jefferies and her staff do a lot more investigating of the Inspector's difficult cases, than he ever realizes, but it's imperative that they help him solve his cases, first because he needs the help and secondly because they truely love and respect him. In this offering, Inspector Witherspoon has another difficult case when a nasty theater critic is murdered. The suspects range from a beautiful actress to a beginning playwrite. The case is a difficult and convuluted one, but Mrs. Jeffries and her staff are able to turn this case around and find the answer to the murder. A delightful mystery with lots of suspense as well as a number of beguiling subplots, such as who is the mysterious gift giver and what about Smythe and Betsy's romance? If you're a fan of the British cozy, dip into this series, you won't be disappointed.

Want to read a wonderful, fun, clever cozy? Look no further than Emily Brightwell's Mrs. Jeffries series. This particular installment is just as superb as the others. The staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens have begun to feel like friends to me.
The premise is the same as the other books: a murder is committed, dear old Inspector Witherspoon is on the case, he's baffled, his house staff - led by housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries - secretly investigates the case, and ultimately nudge the Inspector toward the clues until he nabs the killer. This is the same formula in all the books, but it never gets boring. The characters and setting and plot twists never cease to entertain.
A bit of theatre life in this one........2005-05-29
Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the staff are drawn into a murder that seems to touch on the theatre in this book. A well-known, but very disliked critic is found floating in the canal, but the water in his lungs is bathwater, so Inspector Witherspoon is onto another murder. This is a quick-moving little book that keeps you guessing almost up to the end. I always enjoy these stories because I've come to love the characters, and the servants in Upper Edmonton Gardens are totally appealing. It's always such fun to follow their antics as they hurry to help their beloved Inspector solve murders.

This household does a lot more snooping than polishing the silver and always seem to come up with the answer just in time to save their beloved Inspector. Inspector Witherspoon who is just slightly naive but a truly gentle man at heart.
When a nasty play critic is murdered it seems that Scotland Yard has got themselves another difficult hommicide. The suspects range from a beautiful actress to a beginning playwrite. Will Witherspoon fall for the actress and forget all about Lady Cannonberry. The case seems like a hopeless mess but will Mrs. Jeffries be able to turn this case around? True Mrs. Jeffries is far from like Sherlock Holmes their methods being quite. But their is more than one way to find the solution. Well like Brightwell says,"Behind every great man, theirs a great woman."

Pulp fantasy at its best........2004-11-17
Once I started reading I couldn't put it down! What this book lacks in length it makes up for with a fastpaced story, wicked battle scenes, and a suprising amount of character development. The majority of the story is told from the perspective of the orcs, who remain refreshingly evil throughout the book (most villan oriented stories end up trying to humanize the bad guys, I'm glad this one didn't). All in all, the book had all of the strong literary elements of more mainstream tales, but maintained a gritty realism that engaged me on every page. This is the best orc fantasy I've read since Lord of the Rings.

Very helpful.......2007-04-24
This book is a great compliment to the David Swenson practice manual, or great on it's own. It has a lot more detail than David's book, with things to watch for in each pose, and also defines what you need to be working towards. The thing that I love most about it is that it has photos of each part of the vinyasa after each pose so that you can visually see exactly what you should be doing, rather than trying to read the words "take a vinyasa."
A must have for anyone serious about ashtanga.

I bought this with David Swensen's book and the two complement each other well. The pictures are really great, and there are useful highlighted tips. I haven't used it as much in practice as Swensen's book because it doesn't stay open as well (the binding is more difficult than the spiral of Swensen's book), but the information conveyed is useful and well done. Good Choice.

The book has good step by step instructions however the instructions are for advance yogis. A beginner or someone who has been doing yoga for a short time would find it difficult to do the majority of the poses.

This book has been my companion since I began practicing Ashtanga Yoga. John's detailed and thorough description of the vinyasa and poses are extremely helpful both as a student and, now, as an Ashtanga teacher. I now use it as an occasional reference but remember when I would consult it almost daily in order to refine my practice. I highly recommend this text as one of the only "pure" Ashtanga books, ideally complimented by taking Ashtanga classes if you can. A++.
Great book: step-by-step postures with breathing and gazing.......2005-04-19
This was my first Ashtanga book, and it was great at the time, having been new to Ashtanga.
I still refer to this book, and still find it very helpful in learning the small details of each posture. John Scott does a good job linking the breath to each movement.
He also does a good job addressing jump backs and jump throughs, transitioning between postures.

An outstanding look at Southern baking traditions.......2007-10-09
This book takes a wider, deeper, more historical look at Southern baking. Fowler looks at all both white and black baking, and the traditional recipes for things like rice-based baked goods that are not so prevalent nowadays. He also points out that biscuits are not such a traditional item in the Southern repertoire, since baking powder is only about a century old. His recipes provide a way to taste yourself back in time. Wonderful book.
Great book for beginning bakers.......2007-03-09
I must say this is my first review. This book is really a great book for someone who has never baked or has not been that good at it. The only reason I bought this book to begin with was because I was shopping at a store in Savannah, GA and the gentleman who helped me find a good knife for cooking happened to be the author. Well I must say after getting it home I decided to scan for a few good recipes. I didn't even get to any recipes that night because I was learning about the ingredients that go into baking. I now know why I was never any good at baking. Mr. Fowler's instructions are very detailed and he gives wonderful histories of ingredients. I loved this book so much that I went straight to Amazon and looked for more books that he has written and have bought a couple of them. All of them that I have gotten are equal in quality. I really never read cookbooks, I just used them for recipes but this one is worth reading. Just a note, he is wonderful person if you ever get to meet him and very knowledgeable on all things culinary.
The Proof Is In The Eating.......2006-02-20
Southern cookbook writers are almost as prolific as its novelists. Just when we think there is nothing else to be said, another great book with new, untried recipes gets published; and we know we cannot live without it. Damon Lee Fowler has written just such a book.
Mr. Fowler in his introduction gives a brief history of Southern cooking, tracing its roots primarily to the African American and European tradition. He reminds us that there is no need to publish yet another lemon meringue pie recipe as there are dozens floating around. It also "pains" him that he cannot print again his fruitcake recipe (I for one feel no pain since I've never met a fruitcake, the accordion of desserts, I liked although I've neither cooked nor tasted his recipe). He also discusses fully ingredients and equipment in a chapter called "Southern Baking Essentials." There are chapters on quickbreads, stove-top baking, cookies, cakes, pies and pastries, and yeast baking. Finally there is an exhaustive biibliography and reading list.
I'm easy on cookbook writers. They must only print one outrageously good recipe in order for their book to be a success. Bubber's Key Lime Cake (pp. 184-185) makes the cut. This divine cake is a beauty to behold (all white layers and icing); is easy for the most part to assemble although sifting almost five cups of confectioners' sugar for the icing will not make your day; the key lime cream cheese buttercream icing, however, is as good as I have ever eaten; and finally the aroma of lime when you present your cake to your guests will make them smile. I guarantee it.
There are other recipes I want to try. The Appalachian Stack Cake (pp. 188-189) is close to one my grandmother baked when I was a child and I haven't had since then. The Brown Velvet Cake with Dark Fudge Frosting will probably let you live longer without the poisonous red food coloring we associate with red velvet cake. Mr. Fowler also includes several varieties of poundcakes and apparently has a love-hate relationship with them, noting that if you worry about them they are bound to fall.
There are of course many other recipes that will appeal to the individual baker. Mr. Fowler's directions are clear and easy to follow; to his everlasting credit he always tells the reader where to position the rack in the oven, something that many otherwise good cookbook authors fail to do.
Mr. Fowler writes an often pleasantly chatty introduction on the subject covered in each chapter and includes general information about baking those items. Examples: "The first thing required of biscuit making, as with all pastry, is a light touch." And filtered or bottled water should be used for your bread baking. Finally there are several fine color photographs included. You will find many recipes to try in this delicious book.
Will appeal to all levels of cook with easy recipes and plenty of tips.......2006-02-06

Book tells you about the standard, Kind of wished it went more into the history of the breed. It does mention it. Also would of liked more old photos to compare with todays Neos. Over all its a good starter book.

This book is excellent. Everything I would expect from the author and publisher. The pictures are really high quality and give you a great idea of all stages for the Neapolitan Mastiff. The content is just as good and timely. There are many great tips and ideas for any new owner. Unlike many dog breed books, this one deals exclusively with our breed and uses pictures and illustratations of just the Neo. Great Job Carol!!!
