Book Description
For gay New Orleans private eye Chanse MacLeod, it seemed like a simple case: find out who was blackmailing his pretty-boy client's rich, closeted boyfriend, collect a nice check, and take some time off. But then the pretty boy turns up dead in what looks like a hate crime and the gay community of New Orleans is up in arms, demanding justice. In the stifling heat of a New Orleans summer, Chanse searches for an extremely clever killer on a trail leading to a gay rights organization, boys for hire, and New Orleans society, knowing he has to find the killer before the entire city explodes.
Greg Herren has been a freelance journalist, personal trainer, and book critic. He is currently the editor in chief of the Lambda Book Report.
Customer Reviews:
A Weak Murder Mystery.......2005-09-30
While working out at the local gym, New Orleans private detective Chanse MacLeod meets a good-looking young man with a problem. It seems that someone's been threatening to reveal his rich, closeted boyfriend's identity to the public unless he comes up with $50,000. Seems like a simple case of blackmail until Chanse finds the young man dead. Against his better judgement -- and that of the police -- Chanse sets out to find out who killed his client, following a winding trail through New Orleans high society and the world of gay rights.
The story itself is ripe with possibilities, but the execution of it leaves much to be desired. Chanse MacLeod comes across as arrogant, boring and very much into the looks-oriented stereotyping that plagues gay culture. He summarizes each man he meets by referencing his height, his build and his relative attractiveness, at one point even stating that one character would be attractive if he lost weight. For a mystery to have a chance, shouldn't the reader like the detective even a little bit?
Most of the male characters have no problem removing their shirts at the drop of a hat to show off just how muscular and toned they are, even if it doesn't have anything to do with the plot. The writing style is very monotonous, wanting to explain every little action in short, passive sentences that drone, almost as if the author were trying to imitate the speech of the old hardboiled gumshoes à la Dashiell Hammett. I found it very difficult to get into the story and to like any of the characters, making this - for me, anyway - a very weak murder mystery.
Big Easy Gay.......2005-05-25
This review is for the Alyson Publications trade paperback first edition, January 2002.
Chanse MacLeod was a New Orleans cop for a couple years, but in the narrative present, he is a private detective without much experience. The story begins when Mike Hansen hires Chanse on behalf of Mike's wealthy, in-the-closet partner who is being blackmailed. But before Chanse can get the particulars, Mike is murdered. Although Chanse "doesn't do murders," he eventually untangles a conspiracy and solves the case.
The plot is murder mystery light. There are no convoluted twists, embedded clues or clever deductions. Indeed, this story is mostly a look inside the New Orleans' gay community where muscles bulge, stomachs ripple and all shirts are one size too small. Of the twenty-nine named males in this book, twenty-five are gay. The seven named females, however, appear to be straight.
Greg Herren tends to write in short, choppy sentences, which although not annoying, I did wish for some rhythm and variety. And there are some startling inconsistencies. Chanse leaves the airport at 7:00 AM and drives straight to the gym, then goes home and tosses his gym bag on the bed, happy that he had turned on the air conditioner that morning. Later he bemoans the unpacked suitcases on his bed. Paul, Chanse's partner, leaves a phone message that he will call from Dallas that night, but later we learn his last flight that night ends in Chicago. Interesting that one-half of all three inconsistencies occurs on page 14.
Although I am hopelessly heterosexual, I found the story interesting. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities, I visit there frequently, and it is perhaps useful to have an apparently authoritative insight into Big Easy Gay.
Summertime, and New Orleans is SULTRY !.......2005-03-29
Greg Herren has put together an interesting cast of characters in MURDER IN THE RUE DAUPHINE. A former New Orleans cop, who just happens to be gay, is now a private detective who repeatedly states, "I don't do murders." Chanse MacLeod is the P.I. in question, and he is hired by a young "body beautiful" to find a blackmailer. The pretty-boy is having an affair with a very rich and prominent married man. Their sexual escapades have been captured on videotape...and there, as they say...the plot thickens.
Set in New Orleans during the summer, one can almost feel the sultry nature of the weather described, which in fact, set the entire tone of the novel. The budding love interest of Chanse spices up the story, as he struggles to determine if he is in love or simply in lust and having incredibly hot sex with his newfound partner Paul. This is an extremely easy book to read, is faced paced, and is sure to satisfy those who are seeking a quick murder mystery. Mr. Herren has demonstrated he can create interesting characters and fascinating plot lines. I am eagerly anticipating reading his newest Chanse MacLeod novel, MURDER IN THE RUE ST. ANN : A NOVEL. It is sitting on my bookshelf as I complete this review, and I know it will be the next thing I read.
Simply awful.......2004-04-30
Thin on plot, this book (which I see from other reviewers is the author's first novel) is unbearably weak. The writing is unpolished and the characters one-dimensional. Maybe his other books are better, but frankly, this one has pretty much soured me.
New Orleans is a character..........2003-01-08
Great mystery set in an exciting environment. Most books set in New Orleans absorb the atmosphere as another character, but with that said, the only drawback were the other characters. The secondary human characters in the gay ghetto blend into each other - I found it hard to keep track of the possible murderers. But overall, I recommend it.

One of the best anthologies of the year:.......1998-01-24
There are some terrific stories in this collection, not least of which are those contributed by the editors themselves. "Audience" by Jack Womack has been chosen for the 1998 volume of "The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror" -- and the volume as a whole will be listed as one of the best of the year. I also heartily recommend Susan Palwick's heart-breaking tale.

Realistic Advice for Pregnant Runners.......2007-09-25
I picked up Running and Pregnancy before we even started trying to conceive so that I would be educated about my exercise choices once we achieved a pregnancy. I am pleased to say that this book is very realistic and doen-to-earth. They debunk some of the exercise myths (don't let your heart rate get above 140) and provide reasonable guidelines to active pregnant women. I am almost 16 weeks, still running strong and look forward to continuing to run through my pregnancy.
Inspiration for runners.......2005-12-20
This is a fun book that details briefly the changes that happen to your body during pregnancy and focuses on the runners body. The author had first hand experience of running throughout her pregnancy. The factual data is supported by 2 page case studies of women runners who had children. Some of them ran all the way through, some switched to cross training and some had to stop. There is a whole spectrum of experiences.
It is an inspirational and supportive book, and helped me get through my exercise on days when I did not feel like it. I also passed it on to my mother when she had issues about my exercise .I recommend it to any runner thinking about having a baby.
A good reference.......2004-04-28
I found this book to be easy to read and full of advice based on the latest studies. I enjoyed the book because it is the most comprehensive reference on current information about running and pregnancy I have found.
The book is written by a woman who has run with two pregnancies, and is full of stories from other women who have run with their pregnancies. It talks about their experiences, motivations, and suggestions/cautions. The book also provides material about how running and conception interact, diet, strengthening exercises, stretching, and the truth about aerobic exertion during pregnancy.
As a runner, I think the book is an excellent addition to my pregnancy book collection, and recommend it to all similar runners who are thinking about or have become pregnant.

Customer Reviews:
"Veggie" interesting!.......2007-03-07
"MEAT"ing (pardon the pun) the challenges vegetarians face from transposing meat recipes into meatless; QUICK meals from "scratch"; nutrition; all geared to the differing kinds of vegetarianism.
(originally attempted to review this when the book first came out, but unfortunately the template did not "take.")
Fun Book!!.......2005-07-28
This book was a fantastic find! I first became a vegetarian 6 months ago but gave it up when I found it frusterating to maintain because it seemed I was eating the same thing every day because I didn't know how to properly cook vegetarian dishes. When my meat allergies recently kicked into overdrive I felt it was time to go vegetarian again and stick to it, so I picked up this book feeling exactly like the title describes. Clueless. This book is wonderful, it has fun tasty recipes that make being a vegetarian much easier. It's also great for those who want to have tasty dinners and kick meat off the menu every now and then. A definate keeper.
A great source for the beginning vegetarian!.......2004-12-15
This book is absolutely wonderful for the beginning vegetarian, or for the experimental cook. In addition to fabulous recipes, it also contains little hints to make cooking easier, serving suggestions, as well as a visual guide to whether a recipe is entirely vegan, or if it contains eggs. This book is also completely appropriate for teen cooks. The recipes, while good, are not too complicated, and are explained in detail. I heartily recommend it.
Steal this book.......2002-04-30
This book was incredibly helpful to me as a delved into the vegetarian lifestyle. It does a great job of helping the less-informed understand ingredients that they hadn't encountered prior to experimenting with veggie cooking. (tempeh? what's tempeh?) Many of the recipes are easily converted to vegan and my carnivorous boyfriend even likes some of them. Most of the recipes are also quick and quickly become staples. The Spicy Black Bean Dip is now a common request at all of my parties.
A vegetarian cookbook that even meat-eaters will love!.......2000-10-27
Until I acquired THE CLUELESS VEGETARIAN, I had no luck at all with vegetarian cookbooks. The food combinations were often odd, the prep work was time-consuming, and worst of all, the finished products just didn't taste all that good. I'd spend hours kneading and chopping, only to have my husband and kids turn up their noses when dinner was served. But wow, this cookbook is different. The recipes are refreshingly "normal"-- lasagna, shepherd's pie, spinach pie, crepes, quiches, pancakes, muffins, and moussaka, to name a few. There are some unusual ethnic entries for those with adventurous palates, but plenty of delicious, easy-to-follow recipes for those with more standard American tastes. There's also some helpful info on easing into the vegetarian lifestyle and feeding a "mixed" family, all rendered in light, witty prose (that's another thing about most other vegetarian cookbooks...they're so deadly dull and serious). Best of all, the results are awesome and leave my family asking for more. I'm rooting for a sequel!

History on Colorado ranching and natural beef program.......1998-08-24
Story of the Coleman family in Colorado and history of ranching on public lands in the western United States. Very readable history on the family and how the development of the public lands directly affected this family.
It gives the history and problems of Mel Coleman's development of a natural beef program.
An accurate account of Western history and Colorado ranching.......1998-06-22
A well written book that tells of the rich Indian, mining and ranching history of Colorado's San Luis Valley, based on historic documents, photos and stories handed down four and five generations. It also tells a story about Mel Coleman, a fourth-generation rancher who litterally bet the ranch on the growth and popularity of natural foods, and WON!

The horse- and rider-training handbook of an internationally renowned master horseman.
Customer Reviews:
Effective Horse Communication.......2007-08-21
Author writes in an easy to read conversational format. He emphasises the importance of horse and rider spending time together to get to know each other. Building of trust on both the horse and rider. I recommend this book. Also watch RFD TV on satelitte.
This is the only natural horsemanship book you'll ever need.......2007-07-31
This is it. Everything is in this book. One can study this book for years and find something new in it each time. Natural horsemanship is so old, it's new again. Pat Parelli is the only one who has managed to put it all together in one place with one title. Since the Dorrance brothers and Ronnie Willis have graduated to Horseman's Heaven, the next best thing is learning from one of their star pupils. Pat is entertaining and almost always profound. The only question is do you savvy savvy?
Clinton Anderson's Down Under Horsemanship book is better.......2007-06-23
While I liked some aspects of Pat's book I found it confusing, unclear, in some instances, repetitive and in some cases, not useful for me at all. He mentions that horses that bite (my horse) bite because you let them get too close (duh!) yet the 1st lesson to gain respect has you touching the horses muzzle to get him to back up (my horse tried to bite me- so, now what?). One of the next exercises has you touching his chest, you know the part of the body directly under the horses' head.... the head that has the biting teeth in it... my horse tried to bite me again! I am giving up on Pat's book for now. Clinton Anderson's book "Down Under Horsemanship" teaches how to use a stick to keep the horse away (not using it to threaten but as an extension of your arm). Clinton's book has step by step pictures and explanations of what can go wrong (both with the horse and human) and how to fix what went wrong. Both he and Pat have similar philosophies but Clinton's book flows much better, gives better examples, describes problems and solutions and stresses how to progress. I would stick with Clinton's book.
Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship.......2007-05-12
I bought this book for my daughter she thought it was good but did prefer John Lyons and Pat Parelli's DVD better as it was visual and this book was against some of her own ideas but a great book if you like the techniques that Pat Parelli uses.
He uses phrases a little old fashion for the younger generation and therefore my daughter found his relationship to the horses a little hard to understand as she did not know the people he refered to.
It does teach all about respect for the horse and from the horse and is well described none the less. A lot of important facts about how to teach a horse, use of spurs, trailer loading, tools, yeilding and many basic detailed descriptions of cantering, techniques of he rein, timing, Desensitizing, voice cues and much more. A great all in one book with black and white photos.
Has a different technique to John Lyons which she decided she liked best after reading this book
The hook.......2007-05-12
There are a lot of so called "natural horsemaship" books, dvds etc out there. I was already steered in this direction because my horse is a parelli student, but I usually tend to do my own thing and so, I checked out a few of the other programs out there, and bought this book despite some reviewers opinions about Pat being a great salesman, using terms that didn't need to be used, creating his own language etc. Let me say this.. yes, this book which is relatively inexpensive in the big scheme of how much horse training costs. It is also Pats "hook", or method he uses to spark interest in his program. It works. It is a great overview of the parelli program, but if you are looking for one little book to teach you how to do it, don't waste your money. The books alone, even if you are an experienced horseperson, are not going to give you enough information. If you want to get a feeling for what natural horsemanship is all about, the book will answer the questions you have, and spark some new ones! I have the entire parelli program now, and am going to one of the conferences this year, to see the Pat and his wife Linda in action. The book hooked me! I'm a praelli devotee now, and urge all horse people to give it a try. Its a new way of interacting with horses, that makes it more fun than you can imagine, while stressing safety and savvy around these large, potentially dangerous, but wonderful and beautiful animals. I know.. just drink the cool aid!

Book Description
ForeWord Magazine's BOOK OF THE YEAR Awards, Silver Medal Winner, Home & Garden
Supreme examples of the art of Japanese gardens, not easily accessible to the public.
The Hidden Gardens of Kyoto is the attractive sequel to Landscapes for Small Spaces by the same photographer, Katsuhiko Mizuno. In this new book, Mizuno introduces the gardens of Kyoto that are not easily accessible or are totally closed to the public.
Mizuno was born in Kyoto and has spent most of his life in this old capital, established in the eighth century. Kyoto is not susceptible to short-term fashions, and this rigidness can be seen in the way it has kept the tradition of garden art alive over the centuries in public and private spaces.
Thanks to his familiarity with the city, Mizuno has been able to penetrate its hidden corners and capture the beauty of unknown gardens with his cameras.
The Hidden Gardens of Kyoto displays more than fifty gardens, from private dwellings to the Imperial Palaces and Villas, temples, tea schools and shrines. The elements and structure of each garden are explained by Masaaki Ono, who studied under the greatest twentieth-century garden designer, Mirei
Shigemori. Plans drawn by Ono also accompany some of the garden descriptions.
Some Japanese gardens are planned so as to be seen from one vantage point, but many are designed for viewing from multiple angles. In his previous book, Mizuno only showed us one aspect per garden, but this time we are given various views as we explore the stroll gardens or look down from the
verandas of the buildings surrounding enclosed gardens. This three-dimensional approach will help both professional and amateur garden designers and landscape architects to understand the structure as well as the diverse vegetation used in one garden.

Beautiful photos but..................2007-09-04
Great picture book, but there isn't much in the way of detailed commentary. Would have enjoyed this book a lot more if there had been some focus on exactly what was highlighted in the photo.
A good presentation of Kyoto Gardens.......2006-03-10
After visiting Kyoto , i think this book gives us many opportunities to appreciate so many details of the wonderful and chaming japanes gardens of the ancient Japan capital.
And the pictures overall taken in fall period are much better,in my opinion, to the spring pictures
Great picture reference for Japanese gardens and courtyards.......2005-08-09
This a beautiful collection of large-sized well composed photographs of the different type of gardens found throughout Kyoto. They are accompanied with brief text on their design principles and historical background. Might proof useful as inspiration and reference for anyone writing and/or illustrating a story set in Feudal Japan like Samurai-Ninja stories. It might also be a nice surprise present to Anime/Manga fans by adding another dimension to their collections.
thoughtful and thorough.......2005-07-24
This book provides an excellent inside look at kyoto's historical gardens, though without much of the context in which they exist (e.g. surrounding city, houses). The photography is fantastic as it realistically shows the reader both the intricate details & broad strokes that make up these complex settings. Keep in mind, it is a serious piece of work and the descriptions are somewhat short and/or dry (but maybe that's the point).
A singularly beautiful treasury.......2004-10-10
The impressively visual photography of Katsuhiko Mizuno deftly combine with the infomative text of Masaaki Ono in The Hidden Gardens Of Kyoto, an amazingly beautiful photography book presenting captivating images of Kyoto gardens. The full-color pictures come with captions in fine print that succinctly inform the reader of the garden's location and style of composition. A summary of basic information and common Japanese garden formations is included in the back, but the majority of The Hidden Gardens Of Kyoto is devoted to resplendent photographs of the gardens themselves. A singularly beautiful treasury.

Book Description
Historical thought, whether it is expressed in writing or through works of art, inevitably contains elements of fiction. Thus in every phase of the development of historical thinking the question arises: were these fictional elements recognized and if so, how was their function perceived? Was any effort made to distinguish between a documented fact and any assumptions or deductions related to it? In examining the past, was it deemed important to curb the free play of imagination or was it thought that any explanation, no matter how fanciful and irrational, was better than none? This is the question that this book attempts to answer. In doing so, it examines a rich variety of texts and also some works of art ranging from the Ancient Near East to the nineteenth century.
