The storytelling formula Stuart M. Kaminsky employs in his madcap mysteries featuring low-rent, World War II-era Los Angeles private eye Toby Peters has proved remarkably successful over more than a quarter century. Each entry in this series (beginning with 1977's Bullet for a Star) finds Toby taking on a celebrity client; being beaten silly at least once during the ensuing investigation; contending with a supporting cast of misfits ever eager to supply ludicrous asides; and eventually, despite meager expectations of his genius, unearthing clues enough to expose a murderer. Yet even with all those familiar ingredients in place, Now You See It, the 24th Peters tale, doesn't capture the magic of its recent predecessors.
Which is ironic, since this yarn is all about magic. Toby, now pushing 50 and freshly partnered with his brother, choleric ex-homicide cop Phil Pevsner, is hired in June 1944 to protect "the world's greatest living magician," Harry Blackstone. It appears that a wealthy but demented rival, "third-rate parlor magician" Calvin Ott, intends to ruin Blackstone's reputation while simultaneously enhancing his own. However, his process of humiliation seems more than a tad extreme, involving not only slaying a seedy PI during Blackstone's buzz-sawing-the-girl-in-half illusion, but also shooting the deceased's "tiger lady" girlfriend. Prepared to curb Ott's scheme, Toby is surprised when Ott himself is done in--knifed in the back of the neck during a formal reception in Blackstone's honor, with more than five dozen witnesses unable to identify the perpetrator. Quite a trick, especially as it leaves Blackstone with means and motive for committing the crime. In order to save the white-maned prestidigitator, Toby must find a phony waiter and a phonier turbaned gunman, stomach punchlines from comic Phil Silvers, enlist the swashbuckling talents of leading man Cornel Wilde, and--riskiest of all--submit to the oral ministrations of his pal Shelly Minck, "the devil's dentist."
There's a swell twist closing out this book, which proves once again the devious desirability of misdirection. And Kaminsky's decision to begin his chapters with excerpts from the old Blackstone, The Magic Detective radio show enhances both his tale's theme and its period flavor. At the same time, though, the formula of this series is strangely underaffected by Toby and Phil's new business relationship, and a swordplay scene, while entertaining, is gratuitous and unbelievable. Following two celebrated Peters outings, To Catch a Spy and Mildred Pierced, Now You See It conjures up comparatively little novelty. Being the 24th Toby Peters book of this series it could very well be the best that Stuart Kaminsky has written.
Once again Peters is hired by a client but now there is an interesting twist...Peter is no longer alone. He has teamed up with his retired brother and together they have opened an investigation agency.
However, the best thing about the Toby Peters' Mystery is still the famous actors that appear in them. I loved reading about how Cornel Wilde helped Peters' investigations and help solve the murders of a 'so-called' magician.
If you love an investigator that is easily hurt and can't shoot straight then you will surely love this Toby Peters' Novel.

Stuart Kaminsky has given his dependable Toby Peters mystery series a little twist, pairing his detective with his recently retired brother. The pairing definitely gives the series a spark, all without sacrificing any of the trademark wit or cleverness. Kaminsky's series is filled with interesting characters and this one is no exception; magician Harry Blackstone is the featured celebrity and he is put to good use. And, as always, Kaminsky makes excellent use of Los Angeles in the 1940s.
That Old Toby Peters Magic.......2004-10-10
"Now You See It" is the 24th volume in Kaminsky's always reliable Toby Peters series about a Hollywood P.I. who constantly finds himself on cases in the service of some of the most notable stars of that decade. True, the books are heavily formulaic, but it's a good formula and one that movie buffs and nostalgia freaks will always enjoy. If this latest entry has a flaw, it's that the celebrity du jour is one of Kaminsky's lesser entries. I bow to no one in my respect for the prestidigitorial skills of Harry Blackstone (whose work I saw on the old "Ed Sullivan" show) but, compared with people like Bogart, Cooper, Bette Davis, Groucho Marx and Eleanor Roosevelt, he is definitely minor league. Making up for this deficiency are the chapter headings which feature a series of easy-to-do tricks culled from (apparently) a Blackstone radio series. And, while we're on the subject of deficiencies, it would behoove Carrol & Graf, Kaminsky's publisher, to invest in a proofreader! Never have I seen so many typos in a published work by a "name" house! It don't cost that much, guys! Heck, for works of the quality of this one, I"LL do it for lunch money!

Fantasy at its most entertaining!.......2001-11-16
This book was a delightful find. I bought it based on the glowing recommendations on the cover by Fritz Leiber, Piers Anthony, and Andrew Offutt, among others. It's not often that you see such a collection of authors raving about a book and they sure were right! This book is a brilliant piece of high adventure, fantasy at its best. Despite the "Red Sonja-ish" cover art, "Silverglass" is not really just a stale old "barbarian" novel. No, it is much more along the lines of Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser series-- mercurial, witty, and delightfully character-based. Corson and Nyctasia are two of fantasy's most unforgettable women characters, so much fun that they just win your hearts and make you want to read more and more about them. **Warning** The series is currently out of print. Get it and the rest of the series used through Amazon's used book service. That's what I did to get the next three books after Silverglass, and it was a snap. Thanks Amazon!

I read this book back in the late 80s when it was published. I never could find the sequels even though I knew there had to be some. Now I came across it again and it's out of print. Argh.
Hidden Gem.......1999-01-05
SilverGlass is the first book in a series of four books of the same name. It is the story of the noblewoman/sorceress Nyctasia and her swordswoman/companion Corson. Nyctasia is forced into exile from her city of Rhostshyl for trying to make peace between the ruling families. She hires Corson as a bodygaurd while she travels to mystical forest in the search of her lost lover. A good book that is a good start to an intriguing series. While short(186 pages) it packs in more story than many 300+ page books.
High Fantasy with a twist of romance........1998-11-01
Silverglass is an excellent book that offers it's readers a true fantasy trip filled with lovable characters! The four book series (Silverglass, Web of Wind, Witch of Rhostshyl, and Mistress of Ambiguities) all fit together like a snug fitting glove. They are truly great books that hold the readers attention and keep moving forward in a fast action paced enviroment. Loose ends are tied up and have kept me wishing for a new sequel!!! Where are you Mrs. Rivkin?!?

(cheating here and repeating, but since no one is reviewing the three books that make this series, i dont want anyone to miss the fact that it was both interesting and funny and thought provoking. buy all three)
I'm so bummed that the triology of 'mistress of ambiguities, silverglass, and web of wind' wasnt carried on. ok sure, its the old warrior and sorceress, but it was so well done. the character interaction and development was great, it was like looking in on their lives. the playful arguing and sometimes real disagreements between partners brings to life a relationship that is so mundane in other books. to some extent the adventure was almost superflous, just a vehicle for 'spending time' with them. on the other hands, the adventures were so well done, not predictable endings, complex enough to hold interest but without becoming overwhelming... i can only say, write me another one please!

The second novel of the Siverglass series. This book continues the adventures of the noblewoman/sorceress Nyctasia and her companion/bodygaurd Corson. In this book Nyctasia and Corson learn of a hidden treasure which is coincidently near the lands of a disowned branch of her own noble family. An intriguing and very human story with a mystery to spice things up. Can be read alone or as part of the overall series. only 202 pages but packs in more story than many 300+ page books. It makes for a good read.

This book shows the body in such detail that you don't have to be a doctor and already know what you're looking at to know what you're looking at. The drawings are beautiful and really help give life to the words. It doesn't start and stop with "this is the heart," but starts with conception, how the heart develops, what else is affected by the heart (and the rest of the cardiovascular system), high blood pressure, stroke...
I gave a copy to everyone in my family and to my GP so that he can recommend it to others.

This is an excellent visual experience that drives home the need for starting, and continuing, healthy heart practices. This is such a tremendous eye-opening experience that I gave a copy to the people who run the Heart Re-hab sessions at the local hospital - where I went for two months. I also gave one to my brother, who had a quadruple bypass about five years ago, because he was not taking as good care of himself as is loved ones wanted him to.

this book is truely awe-inspiring! one gets hypnotized looking at the pictures, thinking, "i've got all that going on inside me--right now!" the visuals are so fantanstic and yet so truly real that they urge you to seriously reconsider your relationship with yourself. this book is a statement on the miracle that you are. it gives you a very deep sense of respect for your own heart and your own life. anyone who has a heart will fall in love with this one!

A few small problems but still a good book.......2006-12-15
I was very excited to find this book. I love to bake and all of the cookbooks I had have mostly lunch/dinner recipes. This book calls for lots of chocolate and the author tells you to find a dairy-free subsitutes. We all can do that and most of us haven't written a cookbook. Another problem is that a lot of oil is used in this book. Way to much. I made some chocolate chip cookies and COULD NOT even eat any of them because it tasted like oil. (What a waste and very gross.) The last problem is that there is no nutrional values given. However, I still use this book. I just use less oil and only egg whites to cut down on fat. A lot of the muffin recipes are very good.

Too much chocolate!.......2004-06-26
This is not a great book for anyone with a serious milk allergy, as many of the recipes call for chocolate, either in chocolate chip or baking chocolate form. I've had a really hard time finding any completely dairy free chocolate to use in baking so many of these recipes were off limits for my milk-allergic child. The book does have a nice selection of "non chocolate" recipes, but overall I found it disappointing.
Not missing out on Dessert.......2001-06-12
The desserts in this book are sinfully decadent. My only concern is that a lot of sugar and oil are used in many of the recipes and therefore they are not low in fat (and are high in calories).
BUT desserts aren't supposed to be low fat etc. so go ahead, if you are missing having GREAT desserts due to a milk allergy, then this is the book for you!
Be sure to try the carrot cake, it is the best I've EVER HAD!

Six months ago I received my little mini-dachshund Gabriella. She is a silver-cream, dapple coloured, long-haired, beautiful little girl. She has a sweet temperment, is very smart, and lovely in appearance.

This book was a big disappointment. Its authors write about different types (colors and markings), but fail to provide pictures of what they actually look like. They also write about specific body parts that they fail to note on their "External Features Picture".
Basic questions remain unanswered. Mainly, what does a wild boar color look like? And are any colors or types more rare than others are?
After reading this book my questions where still unanswered. The same is for Ann Carey's "The Dachshund".
Maybe I'll try "Dachshund for Dummies".

Weird, prolix prose.......2006-07-09
I was disappointed to find the book has almost nothing to do with Solomon Andrews, he only rates five pages. Most of it is the mundane story of a group of well-meaning but inept lunatics trying to build and fly an "aerobody"--a "wingless" airplane shaped vaguely like one of Andrews' claimed balloon designs. (They sort of succeed, but the Aereon company goes broke a few weeks later and eventually the craft is put in permanent storage.)
Obviously the airplane (airplane? airplane!) had a wing, it just didn't look like one. Someday I will build the "crumpled-paper airplane" where I hang a motor underneath a giant piece of crumpled paper... perhaps I can call it a "crumpulator".
McPhee's writing is a little strange, and many words are used in slightly odd ways. It's not horrible, but not good. (I'm not anxious to read any of his other books, let's put it that way.)
The story itself is predictable, if you're familiar with the history of mad scientists with mediocre ideas. The design is kept in secret; the first N all-in attempts catastrophically fail on their first try; inadequate testing; absurd visionary dreams; insufficient funding; infighting; religious mania; suppression by "the man". It was interesting to read, but only in the same way watching a dot-com fail in slow motion is interesting.
I'm very interested in learning about Andrews and whether his designs ever actually existed (and worked), but this isn't the place to find out.
Another great McPhee work.......2002-02-08
I am an unabashed fan of John McPhee, and believe him to be one of the todays's best non-fiction writers. _The Deltoid Pumpkin Seed_ does nothing but reinforce my impression.
I knew very little about 'lighter-than-air' history or technology before reading _Pumpkin Seed_, but McPhee assumes no prior knowledge. Indeed, one of the things I like best about McPhee is his ability to explain topics of a complex nature to a lay audience.
The story's 'characters' are exquisitely developed, and their interactions with each other are sometimes tragic, often hillarious. A number of them would make fascinating subjects for biographies in their own right.
If you have any interest in avaiation history, or just enjoy reading a well-crafted non-fiction work, I highly recommend this book.
Wingless Wonder.......2001-08-05
McPhee tells the tale of the Aereon, a wingless airplane. It's a story about a dream, really, and a bunch of dreamers aching to bring back the big-airship ideal. There's Monroe the missionary, Miller the fellow religious man, Fitzpatrick the designer who ends up pumping gas for a living, Kukon the master model builder, Olcott the cool test pilot. It's an amazing blend of history and character and scenes. It's also maybe the best pure writing I've seen by McPhee. In particular, the scene introducing Fitzpatrick is brilliant. The book's wind-down, centering on the last test flight of the Aereon 26, is worthy of study for the art of building suspense.

The total lack of interest generated by this book is inexcusable for such a "celebrated" author. This virtual wading pool of long, boring language was worthless and not worth the money i paid for it.

This is the first McPhee book I ever read-- way back when it first came out. How well I remember it! How many years I have continued to look for news of the needed technology for large scale commercial use of lighter than air craft finally being mastered (and we still seem on the brink of making it work). A bookstore clerk had told me as I picked up the book, "That is one strange book. We do not know where to put it. Should it be in history, science, biography, reference, the technology section on air craft, business? No place seems quite right." I knew I would read more books by McPhee after this exquisite find, but I did not expect the next one to be on-- oranges! What a book The Deltoid Pumpkin Seed is; what a writer McPhee is. His books always leave you with the feeling that you now have a special insight into something out of the ordinary. And indeed you do.

An imprescinble issue for all lovers of tropical trees. Very good colour pictures and excellent and short information. The USDA zones assigned to trees sometimes are not accuracy in my experience.

although general good, I'd like it to be more cautious about the frost hardiness of each species(The reason I bought it).There are trees that are described as being more tender than they are and other that are more hardy to frosts than in reallity. I mean that USDA zones are sometimes not so accurate for some species described
But beyond this there is a great amount of information inside it and many pictures also

I have bought several copies for my book store customers here in Panama, and all are delighted with this book. Though a bit cumbersome, it is certainly thorough, and a valuable research tool for anyone interested in the flora of the tropics. It's beautifully illustrated, a book to display as well as study, typical of Timber Press' fine volumes.

I had this book on my wish list and got it for Christmas 05. I can't say anything bad about it. Very clear pictures not the line drawings. Very clearly explained and well layed out. I would recomend this book to anybody interested in learning about tropical tree's. It even had a tree that you don't find in a lot of books

It is not easy to say something sensible about this book. It is just too overwhelming. As can be expected these days of the Timber Press this is a lavishly illustrated, gorgeously printed and handsomely bound volume. Lay-out is immaculate. All pictures (full color) are of a beautiful quality, or better. An immense amount of information is given for each species (usually one page is devoted to each species). In view of the wealth of information provided, there is a huge potential for error, but the book appears to be remarkably error-free. A curious error is that of using "cv." before a cultivar epithet. The one error-prone category here is that of the author abbreviations in the botanical names: these do not consistently follow the recommended standard and, from time to time, are in something of a mess. Obviously, this is unlikely to trouble those who belong to the book's target audience. The other thing that can be questioned is its aim to cram so many trees into one book. However, for someone wanting a handy (if big) one-volume work on (sub)tropical trees this cannot be recommended enough. It will also make a lovely gift to just about anybody.
