Book Description
Byzantium, capitol of the 6th century Roman Empire, simmers a rich stew of creeds, cultures, and citizens with a sprinkling of cutthroats and crimes. John the Eunuch, Emperor Justinian's Lord Chamberlain, orders a Christian court while himself observing the rites of Mithra. Thomas, a knight from Britain, Ahasuerus, a soothsayer, and two ladies from Crete stir up events and old memories for John, who must ask how the visitors link to the death of Leukos, Keeper of the Plate. An Egyptian brothel keeper and a Christian stylite know more than they are telling....
In due course, John gets his man - and a love scene....

Good story - abominable editing.......2002-04-02
I enjoyed this story, read the next book in the series and have ordered the third. However, I have never in my life read a book that had so many glaring spelling, grammar and other editing errors. It's as if an early draft was accidentally printed or, if this was a final, it was proofed by a not very well-trained chimpanzee. There are errors on almost every page. It's very distracting. If you can ignore that and finish the book, the second book has fewer appalling editing failures. The protagonist in this series is a rather fascinating character - interesting enough to make me curious to read his continuing adventures.
Muder in Byzantium.......2001-11-27
If you like the ancient Rome centered mystery novels of Lindsey Davis, John Robert Maddox, and Steven Saylor and want to try a different locale, read "One for Sorrow". It takes place in sixth-century Byzantium and takes place in the streets, docks, cisterns, and Great Palace. Scenes occur at the Hippodrome, the Church of Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia), and even atop a column with a stylite. While this ancient capital is officially Christian, Mithraism and Egyptian religions influence the tale. Details of life in the capital of the Eastern Empire include references to Kollyba, Liquamen, and even an early type of organ, the Hydra.
The hero is John the Eunuch, once a mercenary but now Lord Chamberlain in Justinian's court who seeks to solve the murder of the Keeper of the Plate. Bodies turn up and John seeks to find the answer that ties together a soothsayer, a red headed knight from Britain, and the victims while protecting his former lover (from before the incident that gave him the appellation) and daughter.
Mary Reed and Eric Mayer provide a great detective story set in a different time and place. The copy I read from Poisoned Pen Press was crisply printed with a very readable type setting. It includes a small map of Byzantium and ends with an 8 page glossary (in case you don't know who Zeuxippos was).
AN EXCITING NEW MYSTERY SERIES.......2001-01-16
Mary Reed and Eric Mayer's One For Sorrow kicks off one of the most entertaining, thought-provoking new mystery series I've read in a long time. It takes place in 6th Century Byzantium, is rich with period detail and character. The main character, John the Eunuch, is the Emperor's chief advisor, a job that requires intelligence, tact and guile; many a chief advisor for the Roman emperor has had his head removed from his body for not accommodating his boss.
The second in the series, Two For Joy, is a treat as well. You don't have to be a fan of historical mysteries to like this book or this series. (I'm not, in particular). You just have to like well-written mysteries with terrific plots, even better characters and a depth of texture and detail that makes many, many other novels seem anemic by comparison.
Best historical mystery.......2000-02-11
Byzantium, the heart of the Roman Empire in the 6th century, contains a rich mixture of old gods, deadly rituals and Christian doctrine. Justinian rules the land as a Christian Emperor, yet The Lord Chamberlain, one of the most honored in his court, holds fast the traditions of Mithra, an ancient religion that honors the great bull god.
The Lord Chamberlain, also known as John the Eunuch, is a man of loyalty, to his Caesar and to his faith. When his friend is murdered, the quest to discover his killer leads John down a trail full of twists and turns that challenge him to examine his beliefs, his past and even his deepest fears.
One for Sorrow captures the horror of the mutilation of John's body as well as the maiming of his soul. When he once again faces the woman he loved long ago, and the daughter he never knew he had, John also has to face his own deeply buried desires. At the same time, he cannot forget that a murderer is walking the streets of Byzantium. Who is the killer? Who will be next? And what part does a peculiar ancient soothsayer play in the strange events that swirl around John like a troubled sea of confusion and death?
The authors weave an intricate tapestry of characters and plot along with a fascinating look into the day to day life of the Byzantine Empire. There is even a mysterious knight who claims to have been dispatched from King Arthur to search for the Holy Grail of Christ, making this a mesmerizing mix of fact and fantasy that serves to make the story even more absorbing.
Mary Reed and Eric Mayer originally introduced John the Eunuch through several short stories, and have now brought him out as a full-time ancient sleuth. One for Sorrow is a novel that is hard to put down. The authors are superb artists who paint a well-presented mystery with the colors of a civilization that seemed shrouded in history until viewed on their life-like canvas.
I whole-heartedly recommend this novel for any mystery fan. A second novel Two for Joy is set to be released by Poisoned Pen Press in October 2000, with the paperback edition of One For Sorrow. I can hardly wait.
Impressive historical whodunnit!.......1999-10-16
Fascinating new series. Roman Empire - 6th century. The authors have generously included a map and glossary. John the Eunuch must solve the murder of his friend Leukos, Keeper of the Plate. After stumbling upon his body in an alley, John finds himself on the path to solving it. The authors tell a candid tale of whodunit when they write about the Roman Empire and a lifestyle their protagonist was forced to live in his time. The reader will meet many impressive characters and experience the authors' historical knowledge of Roman times and the different religions. I believe there are enough characters and twists to keep the reader's interest. Historical mystery readers will be thrilled to have another Roman mystery series.

Clerical Errors.......2005-06-21
This is an Elseworlds tale in the tradition of Gotham By Gaslight but released before the Elseworlds name came to be.
The time is the present but one different from the one we know. Oliver Cromwell did not die when he did in our world, instead he rose from his sickbed and persisted for another decade. Because of this, the mother church is in full control of Britain and the New World colonies (and much of the world that they have conquered). Here a young Bruce Wayne has finally found peace after the death of his parents. He is about to take his vows with the church when Inquisitor Gordon reveals that Wayne's parents were rebels and were executed my the Church in a way made to look like a random crime. Now Bruce does not know what to do.
His confidence in the church has been shaken and Bruce sets out to revenge himself on those that decided to kill his parents. But his quest leads him higher and deeper as he discovers that there are people with amazing abilities that have been either enslaved by the church or imprisoned. Bruce sees that his problem is not with the Church itself but with the way some men are wielding its power. With his faith strong Wayne continues to don an old demon costume of his father's and goes out to fight the injustice of the system.
This was one of the best of the Elseworlds tales. The alternate history worked well and the parallel heroes that Bruce discovers were very well done. While Gotham By Gaslight had a couple of sequels, this one has remained alone although it is rich enough to spawn many new tales. Check it out.
Full of mistakes, but very enjoyable.......2004-11-09
This is, as far as I know, the first official Elseworlds book. The "What If" is Oliver Cromwell's survival for a decade, which ensures that the Puritan Commonwealth remains in place indefinitely in Britain and its colonies, including North America. Bruce Wayne's parents, dissidents in this harsh, totalitarian theocracy, are murdered by order of the Court of Star Chamber, a shadowy religious authority. This sets in motion the cogs and wheels that will lead to Batman's advent. Seeking answers, Batman penetrates the bowels of Gotham Cathedral and runs into a government project, run by the demented scientist Erdel, to control superhumans and turn them into government stooges. Flash, Green Lantern, Vicky Vale, Aquaman, Lori Lemaris, Clayface, Zatanna, Metamorpho and, most memorably, Superman, turn up and are either crushed by the government and turned into slaves. The story is well told, and remarkably sophisticated. The artwork is acceptable, though not brilliant.
The book is, nonetheless, full of mistakes. The Commonwealth police were never called "Inquisitors", and in fact the term would have been repugnant to them, since it would have smelled of Catholic popery. The same goes for the flagrant use of religious imagery in Bruce Wayne's gymnasium and in a Church where he is ordained. The Puritans were iconoclasts and did not accept the use of human representation in a religious context. In fact, they destroyed most of Britain's medieval imagery, which was a significant part of its culture. The religious structure, with Bishops and ordained priests, looks rather Episcopal, and would have been inconsistent with the Puritans, many of whom were Presbiterians who did not accept tbe bishopry. And also, the Puritans were very divided among themselves and could never have held power for 350 years irrespective of Cromwell's survival. Plus the book is clearly intended as a heavy-handed criticism of the American religious right. Comic books can do social criticism, but then they need to be better informed (cf. The Watchmen is still the gold standard for this).
Having said this, who cares? The story is nonsensical but fun and memorable. So buy it, already!
Elseworld Batman as its best.......2004-05-10
This is an alternate reality or elseworlds of Batman. In this era, the holy church still rule. Bruce Wayne's parents, both doctors to the inner circle of the holy church get murdered by a small time criminal, young bruce swore revenge. Little did he knows that the murderer of his parents is not just a small time criminal.. his parents are not just a victim of random street crime.. They are victims of much more larger and sinister entity.
The story has great opening and great ending (although not so satisfactory for me anyway). But in the middle,it dwindle a bit. And the run-of-the-mill genetic re-engineering side story is a bit silly IMHO.
If you are familiar with DC characters like Oliver (Green Arrow), Flash, Aquaman, Superman..you can get the amusment at the background story. Otherwise, it doesn't much make sense anyway.
DC Elseworlds are the best!.......1998-05-09
Bruce Wayne, an acolyte in the holy church, wants to know why his parents were murdered. On the way to finding out, he discovers that the church and government aren't nearly as pure as he thought they were. And so he dons the mantle of the bat in a terrifying world without superheroes.

In the early 1990s, when Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D., a nationally recognized award-winning nutrition expert and the nutrition correspondent for Good Morning America, wrote the first edition of her groundbreaking book, Food & Mood, scientists were just beginning to understand how what we eat affects how we feel. Over the past several years, nutrition research has exploded, and this edition of Food & Mood has been completely revised and updated to reflect the latest findings on the relationship between diet and mental and emotional well-being.
Food & Mood covers all the bases for eating right for a healthy body and mind and includes practical, nutritionally sound advice for putting Somer's Feel Good Diet into practice. Somer starts out by simply and eloquently elucidating the science behind the food-mood link. She explains how food affects mood; the basis of food cravings; how diet is connected to stress, PMS, and fatigue; and what foods banish the blues, boost brain power, and improve sleep naturally. Need to stop overeating and abusing food? In the second section, Somer gives compassionate, pragmatic advice for turning your eating habits around for good. The final section gives detailed, step-by-step suggestions and guidelines to help you eat right to feel great. Included are shopping tips, daily menus, information on designing a supplement program, and tantalizing recipes. (Who knew burritos, brownies, and chocolate chip cupcakes could be good for you?) --Ellen Albertson

Food and Mood.......2007-09-20
This is a very easy to read book. I was happy to see menu plans and receipes included.
Great book.......2007-06-09
This is a fantastic book and highly recommended. Somer does an excellent job in breaking down the science on eating and succintly conveys these points to the reader. Not only will your body feel the benefits of Somer's advice, but you will also learn a lot about how the scientific relationship between food and mood.
I felt that the best thing about this book is that Somer does not say that you must eat any specific diet. Rather than advocating for a strict and boring diet, the author recommends eating habits that mean that eating can still be a great experience.
BUY THIS BOOK if you never buy anything else..........2005-09-29
It's so refreshing to read a book that doesn't preach "diet". It's a vicious cycle. What we eat affects our mood and our mood affects what we want to eat!!
The book (at the beginning) goes into some detail about the chemistry of the body and brain and the purpose is to show you HOW your body uses the fuel it gets. It is an easy read and very easy to incorporate the changes into your life.
The book has really been my "Bible" and I have told hundreds of people about it. It's about eating the right foods for your body and your mind, it's NOT a diet, it's a lifestyle change. The reason so many women can't lose weight and keep it off is that they are focused so much on "diet" and losing weight. It's really about being healthy overall. And what we eat directly affects our moods and THAT is a mental thing, which eventually turns physical if our moods are depressed and we continue to eat things that hurt us.
Another great thing about it is that it covers all the different types of moods and changes women go through and how what they eat either makes the mood better or worse. It also has lists of foods in the back that are good for your lifestyle. I never realized there were SO MANY fruits and veggies and other foods out there that are good for you, that I could eat. And knowing which foods to stay away from or eat during certain moods is so helpful.
For instance, late in the day when you are at work and feeling tired, eat a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread. It does NOT put you to sleep, it's in small amounts, it actually does the reverse and perks you up. Try it!!
At least go to the library and check the book out first, I guarantee you will love it and want to buy it so you can use it for reference. I am so glad I found it, this book has changed my life!!!
Decent Nutrition Overview.......2004-12-08
This book is an overview of nutritional and dietary practices, and how they can affect your health, particularly your mental well-being. It is organized into two main sections: The Food-Mood Link, and Nutrition Know-How. In the first section, there are separate chapters about such topics as blood chemistry, carbohydrates, fats and chocolate, and dietary affects on energy levels, PMS and SAD, depression, stress, thinking and memory, as well as chapters on food allergies and intolerances, and eating disorders. The second section presents advice on healthy eating habits for positive mental well-being, with chapters on shopping and supplements. At the end of the book are a glossary, a short section of recipes, a list of organizations devoted to specific diet and health concerns, references organized by chapter, and an index.
Reading this book is a bit like consulting with a nutritionist. Near the beginning of most chapters is a short self-scoring quiz about your current dietary habits or mental condition. After taking the quiz, you add up the points to see if you are eating well in this particular area, or should consider adjusting your habits. The remaining text in the chapter explains some of the problems or symptoms of the topic under discussion and various dietary factors that may play a role, or how dietary changes can help ameliorate symptoms. The suggestions Somer makes are all grounded on published scientific research, as cited in the references found at the back of the book.
While I found the nutritional information worthwhile, I found the quizzes a bit simplistic at times. Quiz 1.1 "What do you eat and how do you feel?" was particularly questionable in format. It asks you to rate your mood on a scale of 0-5 for about 25 characteristics such as "calm" or "lethargic" before lunch and then again after lunch. If any of these values change during this time, you are presumably to blame it on what you had for lunch. Such a format constitutes a classic example of how to create unfounded cause-effect relationships. Mood changes could just as easily come from hormone cycling, food you ate at an earlier meal, or something you heard on the news during lunch. On the other hand, the quizzes provide a limited means of interactivity, to make up for Somer not being able to conduct a personal interview about specific needs before giving dietary advice. Overall, I found the book informative and interesting, though the quizzes need some more polish.
Might be the best Diet Book out there.......2004-05-23
I bought this book before I bought the South Beach diet book.
At the time, I did not comprehend what White bread and insulin levels were doing to my body. After I went on the South beach diet, I went back to reread some of Food and mood. I realised that what had been written in SBD, had been covered in much more depth in Food and Mood.
There is so much information in this book. Each food does something to your body. Too much sugar, and 20 minutes later you are tired and cranky. Same could be said for white bread, white rice, white pasta.
The bibliography at the end is priceless. For once, the author of a diet book has backed up her claims with countless studies from reputable sources.
In conclusion, get this book.

Great book!.......2007-09-22
I've never been to Thailand but feel as though I have. The descriptions of Thai culture and communities is wonderful. Very vivid in my opinion. The photography is excellent as well. I haven't yet tried the recipes (a procrasinator) but they look as if they will be very pleasing. I'm really looking forward to trying out the Dim Sum recipe.
In all I'd say this is a top-notch book and can wholeheartedly recommend it. Passport not needed!
best Thai enthusiasts cookbook.......2007-03-15
What a remarkable book! There is as much space devoted to conveying Thai culture and food history, as there is recipes... complete with both genuine snapshots of Thailand eateries, as well as gorgeous pictures of finished products.
Book offers a nice selection of ingredient introductory material, history, cultural snippets, and cooking tips. Recipes are easy and unfussy, but not geared toward novice cooks (i.e., directions include "Fry until golden brown," doesn't tell you over what heat).
If you want a taste of Thailand cuisine, this is the book to get! Real, everyday dishes that are simple to prep.
The Real Deal.......2006-01-19
I bought this for my husband, an inspired cook, after returning from a year of living in Bangkok where we ate wonderful street food every day. We have one of Vatch's older cookbooks and turn to it again and again when we want to make Thai food that tastes like real Thai food and not the overly saucey, overly sweet stuff that is sold in most Thai restaurants in the U.S. This cookbook has been great! We've already made a number of the dishes, including kao mon gai (chicken and rice) and guawaydiow (street noodles). The flavors are authentic and Vatch gives a wonderful sense of what it is like to be there. This book is particularly good for those that miss the regular, everyday, and oh so delicious food that rarely appears in standard Thai cookbooks, but that is regular lunch or on the go fare in Thailand. Highly recommended.

great reading.......2005-09-22
This book appears to have all info necessary for keeping lovebirds. It was an enjoyable read, an easy read and not boring, the author knew what he was talking about.
Only good for the pictures and a tiny bit of info.......2005-05-14
This book is TERRIBLE for the first time lovebird owner. I bought this book a couple years back and ended up not following much of the advice because I found an experienced bird person at an awesome bird store. Thank goodness!
Among the blatant lies in this man's book are:
1. Handle your lovebird with gloves.
NEVER handle a parrot with gloves on. It scares them. If you are afraid of being bitten, don't buy a bird.
2. Saying handfed lovebirds are only friendly to the person who handfed them.
LIE. Handfed birds are very friendly and will easily bond with their human flock.
3. (my favorite) "Children must be told that lovebirds ordinarily can't be carried around the room on a shoulder or finger."
Care to explain why my SINGLE lovebird loves to sit on my shoulder and easily steps up for me?
4. They will never learn to imitate.
5. They must be kept singly.
I can't even begin to argue this one. It's ludicrous.
My recommendation? Don't buy this book!
It will only lead to many unhappy, unhealthy lovebirds. This man should have his right to write taken away.
They can be little loves.............2004-04-11
As the owner of six new love birds, I found Matthew Vriends LOVEBIRDS A Complete Owner's Manual relatively helpful. I knew little about love birds when I read the book and know a only a little more now. The book did not answer many of my questions, though it raised a few points about love birds I would never have asked. For example, the caption of one photograph says the coloration of the peach-faced lutino lovew bird is sex linked, however, I could not discover which sex was linked. This book is not nearly as comprehensive (or thick) as the title leads one to believe nor is it filled with as much information as other books in the `Barrons' series on parrots including the Senegal and African Grey, however the book is filled with lovely photographs and a number of illustrative drawings.
LOVEBIRDS includes text and maps describing the origins of various types of birds in the family. Vriends apparently owns love birds which he maintains in an outdoor aviary. He includes a good deal of information about keeping love birds in outdoor aviaries, so some of his information such as dealing with frozen toes and vermin that attack birds living aviaries (ticks, rats, mice, etc.) as well as raising love bird babies, may be less than useful for folks like me who keep birds indoors and want to understand "beak fighting" know in advance that clipping their little wings may make it difficult for them to move around an aviary. Although these cute little guys are accused by some of being less than loving, my short experience has shown me that plenty of seed cups and members of the opposite sex alleviates some of the rivalry.
No Way.......2002-12-10
Cute pictures and thats all. Bad info...says you shouldn't have a single lovebird! Thats ubsurd. I have one sitting on my shoulder right now and shes definately happy. It is true you have to spend a lot of time with a single lovie but I know its possible!!
The Lovebird's Bible.......2002-02-04
Faith, our Peach-faced Lovebird thanx the author, Matthew Vriends
many times over for writing this book. Small in size, easy on the pocketbook, yet filled with a wealth of wisdom about raising & caring for these precious creatures of God.
From hand feeding to housing, playing to protecting, care and concerns, how to, don't do, in simple language, "Lovebirds" is a winner!
The information on illness, disease,& what to do, was invaluable. In fact, we were able to proceed in Faith's best health interest before the Vet's visit.
Buy it, highlight, read, & reread this wonderful owner's companion.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly researched.......2007-09-27
This book is poorly researched. One section of the book talks about fungi being plants that do not undergo photosynthesis. This idea has not been accepted by the science community since the mid 50s. It goes on to mention potato blight as common pathogenic fungi....potato blight is not casued by a fungi. The causative pathogen (an oomycete) was once in the kingdom fungi but later moved to a different kingdom in the late 70's. This leads me to beleive that the authors have taken a lot of updated information for granted. I could go on and on about this book. If you are new to gardening and and want something to ready this is an OK book. If you want or need a book that give real uptdate advice this is not the book. In my opinonin this book falls into the catagory of books that are ment to be on a coffe table and not really used. A good name was used to sell a poor product.
Gardening made easy........2007-08-27
I find this book very user friendly. I find the format helpful and it's contents very informative. I especially find the care and pruning guides helpful and the variety of topics inspiring.
Brilliant! Buy this book........2007-07-26
I've been gardening for a few years, and this book really broadened my knowledge. Also made me feel less like a cheapskate for not running out to buy all the latest garden gizmos - they point out that you can reuse pruned shoots, for example, to stake up your garden plants. Highly recommended.
excellent resource.......2007-03-18
If you are interested in organic gardening, this is the book to have. I have not had one question that it couldn't answer yet!
Awsome reference book.......2006-12-01
If I could only have one book it would be this one. It is what is says...an Encyclopedia. Luckily I'm not limited to only one book as it does not cover some topics as well as other books. But that's the point of an encyclopedia..touch on all topics as best as can be done for the space available.
The first 30 pages are dedicated to the history of the organic movement and the basic design recommendations for an organic garden.
The next 70 pages cover the basics of soil care, watering, weed control, plant health and raising plants.
The next 100 pages cover various garden aspects like lawn care, woody plants, garden flowers, container gardening, gardening for wildlife and the use of greenhouses and covers.
Another 100 pages cover growing fruit, herbs and vegetables. This section alone is larger than 90% of most gardening book and well worth the price of the book alone.
It has the standard appendix and reference sections you would expect for a gardening book but a surprising extra is the H.D.R.A Organic Guidelines for Gardeners that is included as an appendix. I didn't even know such a thing existed until I read this book. Absolutely wonderful!

Perennials are the most challenging and rewarding of all garden plants, and most gardeners need all the help they can get to grow them well. Perennials emerge from the ground in early spring, grow to full height, bloom, bear fruit, and then disappear with the first frost, only to do the same thing the following year and again the next. Add this to the fact that for the first year or two, perennials don't do much above the ground (they are growing their root structure), but after that they burst forth with amazingly vigorous growth, and you get an idea of the pleasures and tribulations of perennial gardening. The rewards, however, are rich: a wide array of flower forms and colors, structure and leaf, an ever-changing mid-level tapestry in the garden, plus a celebration of seasonal change. Few gardeners can resist perennials, but how to grow them better and more effortlessly?
Readers can count on Rodale books to be practical and detailed and to advocate organic gardening. While Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials does give information, as you would expect from Rodale, on soil building, climate, propagation and nontoxic pest and disease control, its emphasis is on design. The advice is down-to-earth, as in a sidebar entitled "Evergreen Perennials: Myth or Reality?" that points out that although some perennials are touted as evergreen, and do keep their leaves through the winter (such as Epimedium, Ajuga, and Bergenia), they are often so tattered by winter storms that they shouldn't be counted on to beautify the garden off-season.
Though packed with all sorts of useful information, the meat of the book is the encyclopedia of perennials. From acanthus to yucca, each comes with a color photo, cultural and cultivar information, as well as suggestions on use. Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials is an invaluable reference for anyone interested in these rewarding, though somewhat demanding, plants. --Valerie Easton

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials: 10th Anniversary Revised and Expanded Editionthe .......2007-08-18
the book is very informative easy to read and helps you to make wise choises for your perennial flower beds
A Must Have For Every Gardener.......2006-07-27
This book is very informative and also well organized. It offers many useful tips and information for greenhorn and experienced gardeners alike. It covers every perennial you can think of and even some that I considered roadside weeds. Great reference guide to care for your perennials properly. Highly recommended!
Makes Getting "Serious Gardener" Results Much Easier.......2006-05-17
This is the one book about perennials to own if you can only own one -- part growing manual, part plant reference encyclopedia, and part garden design guide. I stumbled into gardening by accident, having avoided it throughout my youth, but once I caught "the bug," I wanted to learn in a hurry how to do it correctly. This book was (and is) the perfect choice.
Actually, I discovered the advantages of this book backwards: I began by just using it to look up the dozens of plants that I began to bring home from nurseries with the word "perennial" on their hangtags. After a while, I noticed that it had great advice on how to keep the ones that were dying under my care from, well, dying under my care. And eventually I saw that Phillips and Burrell were also smarter than me about how to plan out my garden, for both improved aesthetics and healthier plants.
One aspect of this book that I liked from Day One is that the authors speak the non-gardener version of English, so it's easy to understand and follow. One would think all gardening books would be down-to-earth (pun intended), but no...not like this one.
If you have a garden already, you might want to start using this book by charting out the current layout of the garden and labeling each plant. Don't worry - the book is filled with full-color photographs to help you identify anything that you don't recognize by name. And pretty soon you'll not only see options you hadn't considered before, you'll even know what to ask for at the nursery or home center.
Have fun with it. I know I do.

Lunchbox Studios.......2005-03-01
Isabella Valentine's report of Lunchbox Studios being out of business is not quite accurate - I just bought their font set today (03/01/05). The company is in transition, having moved recently from New York City to Los Angeles. The Web site has yet to be updated with the current contact information, so it's easy to understand how Isabella concluded that they're out of business (I almost gave up myself). Lunchbox is actually under the same roof as Reelhouse.com.
Actually I'm just as happy for Isabella's comment, since it led me to Lunchbox and their excellent set of fonts.
Just one small problem.......2004-07-27
Yes this book has some of the best fonts online and gives websites on where to buy them.
Yes this book is excellent quality, full color, excellent graphics, accurate, edited wonderfully.
Yes this is a fantastic fonts book - one of the best I've seen.
But... one small problem. A huge majority of these fonts come one website (lunchbox studios) which is no longer in business. I tried to buy the fonts myself. The company turned off their phone, their credit card system, etc. even though their website looks like it is up and working. So even though the fonts may LOOK good in the book... they will most likely not be available where it says.
Web Type is a Knock-Out (Editor's Choice).......2002-03-07
This book was selected as our Editor's Choice for March 2002 for several reasons...
First, it's a masterpiece of visual delights -- each of the fonts reviewed includes the font in creative use, actual publications where they have appeared, or simply a creative expression.
Most importantly, the book contains full descriptions, foundry, author/artist and details about the font. Then the second half of the book shows full font listings in both positive and negative. Sweet.
All in all the book is a delight to hold and browse. Even if you're not looking for a font, the visuals are stunning -- printed in full color on 100lb enamel stock.
We highly recommend "Designers Guide to Web Type" for your connection to the best fonts online... or purely for its aesthetic value -- making it the editor's choice in this month's Design-Bookshelf.com.

Today's new Web designers are learning what novice desktop publishers learned years ago--the nuances of type matter! They can pull readers into a page or chase them away. And good typography is even more challenging on the Web than it is on paper. Michael Leary, Daniel Hale, and Andrew Devigal show how to beat that challenge and make a page both typographically exciting and inviting. You'll learn the principles, the terms, the tricks of the trade, including how to tell good typefaces from bad--even the basics of designing a font of your own.
Customer Reviews:
One of *the* books every web designer needs.......2004-12-22
I've had this book on my desk since it was first published (1997), and assumed it was actually out of print until I was looking for an updated version on Amazon (there isn't one - perhaps because there is no need - the first edition simply covers everything!).
Upon finding the same edition I use still in print, I just had to write a review, because put simply, this is one of the definitive books that every web designer needs to have.
The book is The place to go if you want to know about web typography (including the fonts and the terminology/theory behind them, the CSS/HTML associated with text, using fonts as bitmaps, and altering fonts in Fontographer). Nothing else in print even comes close - most other books either have a short section on typography, or (even worse) simply finger point to designs that show good typography.
This book is different, because it talks only about web typography, and also goes into some depth about the theory behind using type and text in web design.
Minor niggle that may apply to some... the CSS section is a little outdated. For me, this isn't an issue because the CSS section is actually an introductory text, so it doesn't affect the book usefulness.
Finally, as a designer and author myself (I have worked on or written 20 books on web design, including a previous 'Amazon Computer book of the year' winner), it is obvious that this book was written by an author team that took their time and focused on what actually needs to go into a definitive textbook/reference on web typography. There are no rushed or brief sections in the entire book, and the book simply exudes quality.
A great place to start as a web designer!!!.......1998-10-20
This book is both comprehensive and understandable in relating both the importance of typography in web communication and using type/fonts correctly in composing a web site. It gives clear and insightful information about the design and use of typography in some of today's most widely used software. I enjoyed it very much as well as finding it very useful in designing my web pages.
Poor mixture of worlds.......1998-10-09
Unfortunately, the first section of this book is written with "document" cut and pasted with "web design", so the relevance of what is said is limited for a web designer. The CSS guidelines are good, and the text as graphics section adequate.
Too heavy on the tech stuff.......1997-07-09
An excellent book on beginning typography in general and typography using style sheets specifically. More comprehensive explanations of the use of type and less on the design would have been in order - The average Web designer won't be interested in creating his own font but definitely needs to know how use fonts correctly. All the advocates of graphics intensive (weighty!!) Web pages will definitely be surprised at how a page with few graphics but excellent use of type can be just as visually pleasing. If you don't have a degree in Graphic Design or wouldn't know PhotoShop from the Home Shopping Network, this book is definitely for you

Book Description
Like a Joyful Bird is a memoir of a third-generation Korean-American woman, born and raised in Hawaii. My story begins with the adventures of my grandparents, who emigrated from Korea to Hawaii, and the interesting lives of my parents and siblings. It then follows the twists and turns of my life which took me from a provincial childhood in Honolulu to a journey around the world ... from being a swinging bachelorette to being a devoted wife and mother ... from practicing my violin every day to writing at my computer. Like a Joyful Bird takes an upbeat look at my experiences and the people who have crossed my path. Some of these personal essays and anecdotes were previously published in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and The Honolulu Advertiser.
So, here they are. IÂ'm delighted to share my memories in Like a Joyful Bird. Perhaps, my recollections will jog the memories of other Korean-Americans. Hopefully, you, the reader, will appreciate the gentle humor that weaves through the serious strands of my story, and the many photographs taken along the way.
