Book Description
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Josie Pigeon, proprietor of Island Contracting, is bothered to find she has a double--a gorgeous redheaded carpenter who's being mistaken for her all over the island. And when this mysterious look-alike turns up murdered on Josie's job site, Josie is highly indignant.
Can it possibly be--Ms. Pigeon's all-woman construction crew and her boyfriend Sam, fear--that the intended victim was Josie herself? She doesn't think she has any enemies. In waters more troubled than she suspects, Josie goes fishing for the truth--and makes a catch that she wishes she could throw back. . . .
"A nice writing style and considerable wit."

Customer Reviews:
Good series, good mystery.......2001-06-13
Josie Pigeon's crew is working on their biggest project to date. A female carpenter who looks very much like her is running around the island saying that someone is trying to kill her. Are they trying to kill the stranger or Josie?
This is the second book that I have read in the series. The characters, an all female contracting company, are unique. The mystery is difficult to figure out, and the various story lines are pretty interesting. I really enjoyed this one.
A good sleuth checks her references.......1999-06-25
This is the second Josie Pigeon mystery. It follows Shore to Die and takes place a year later with some of the same characters. All in all a good mystery. The character of Josie as a carpenter who owns her all-female contracting business while inadvertantly solving a murder as an amateur sleuth is appealing.
But there is an irritating continuity problem between this book and Shore to Die. The name of the Police Chief and his son has abruptly changed from Chief McCorkle and his son Rick McCorkle to Chief Rodney and his son Mike Rodney. The characters are meant to be exactly the same. For those who read Shore to Die first, the name Mike Rodney will be even more an irritant.
Also, the same gag is repeated almost verbatim between the two books.
Shore to Die, p. 190: "Josie Pigeon. I was thinking about you while I was showering last night."
Permit for Murder, p.65: "Come on in, Josie. I think about you every time I shower."
Of course, both refer to Josie's company having renovated a bathroom. But, some originality ...please.
All in all, a fun series.
Was Josie the intended target of a cold blooded killer?.......1997-03-30
......Josie Pigeon lives on an island, enjoying a sense of community, while
running a building contracting firm. However, her lifestyle is far from
idyllic. Josie runs herd on a bunch of female construction workers and has
just finished solving a murder mystery instead of waiting for the bumbling
local police to muck up the job. This leaves Josie with no time left to
breathe. Just as she thinks her life might begin to settle, she is awarded a
new building contract that places a tremendous amount of pressure on her to
meet an impossible deadline. Adding to her concerns is that a murder victim,
who looks like her, has been found on the property.
......Josie, her friends (not the pussycats), and her former boy friend worry
that she might have been the intended victim. The police question Josie, her
employees, and her ex. Josie decides it is time for her to, once again, do
her own crime solving before the island's "Keystone" cops fumble another
homicide.
......Valerie Wolzein has created (in her female protagonist) a symbolic
Everywoman. This is a character that readers can enjoy, identify with, and
root for her to succeed. Josie has an off beat sense of humor that raises
the American cozy to new heights of appeal. This leads this reviewer to the
conclude that Ms. Wolzein deserves a wider fan base. The story line is fast
moving and immensely enjoyable to read. Once having read PERMIT FOR MURDER,
readers will become devoted fans of the writer.

Compelling and unusual historical fantasy.......2007-06-29
It's the first half of the trilogy's middle volume, and it's travelogue time. This is the section where many trilogies sag, but Brenchley paints a vivid picture of desert travel and its hardships and occasional delights. There's also another display of how very different this series is from standard fantasy derived from Northern European mythology, with the world of the djinn beautifully evoked.
This volume gets the party from the Roc, where they met, to the place in the desert where they get to meet another major character, with some interesting diversions and scenery along the way. At the outset the party consists of Marron, Julianne and Elisande; Rudel and Redmond, the two Surayonese men; and Jemel, the young Sharai man introduced in volume 1 and briefly encountered in volume 2. The party have conflicting interests, not least because Marron and Elisande were involved in the death of Jemel's lover during the battle in the Roc, but they also have common interests and a common destination. That should be enough to keep the party together, but they aren't the only one with an interest in the supernatural burden Marron carries.
That burden, the almost-living weapon known as the Daughter, showed the first of its secrets at the end of the previous volume; in the trek across the desert we learn more of what it can do and what it does to its host, and a little of what it actually is. Marron isn't the person anyone would have chosen to carry it, but proves equal to the task.
And again there are hints of various romantic interests and entanglements, without it being at all obvious how these will eventually be resolved. This segment of the story concludes with another twist of one of the romantic plotlines initiated in the first volume, enticing the reader to read on.
This volume introduces more characters and adds new plot threads without concluding earlier ones, but it does expand on hints dropped in the earlier volumes, adding more depth to the world and the main characters. With the original book being split into two for the US edition, it should be seen as a segment in a long novel rather than a novel in its own right, and in that context offers enough to make for a satisfying read while still leaving the reader wanting to move on to the next volume.
even slower.......2007-05-02
With the third volume of Mr Brenchley's saga, its characters escape the oppressive presence of the Roq de Ransom to find themselves in the frightening waste lands east of Outremer.
The map at the beginning of the book cancel what little mistery was left about the location of this series.
We abandon for the time being Anton, left at the Roq, but we gain Jemel and Rudel, much more important in this third book than they were.
All is not well though. If Jemel and Elisande acquire the status of POV bearers and relative depth, but Marron, after the emotional peak of the second volume, seems here pervaded by the same coolness of the cruel Daughter he carries in himself becoming sort of distant and rigid. If this was meant to express the change he undergoes because of the Daughter it fails miserably and deprives us of one of the two main characters.
SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER
Another problem is that Elisande's love for him appears suddenly out of thin air. It is finely done, even the description of her pointless jealousy of Jemel but still we are given no basis for it.
Jemel's love for Marron, that is perfectly justified instead, is ill worded, as if the author were unwilling -or worse embarassed- to indulge in it and in the -avoidable- risk of melodrama. We are not even told what Marron thinks about it.
Worst of it all is that there are several paragraphs of the book where the plot flows so slowly and filled of unnecessary details that it drags. Are we dealing with a second-volume crisis? (remember this series was originally a trilogy and that this is the first part of the original second volume)
Supplies crucial additional insight into the characters.......2004-03-06
A Dark Way to Glory (The Third Book of Outremer) follows Chaz Brenchley's unlikely party of heroes, each of whom we have already met yet still seek to truly understand, from the outskirts of the fortress Roq de Rancon across the dangerous deserts of the Sharai to the brink of Rhabat. The weariness of such a harsh and dangerous journey weighs heavily on the action in this installment of the series, providing a welcome opportunity to learn more about each of the major characters and the very different motivations driving each of them. Those who thirst for battle scenes will find only a few such moments here, but each fight described in these pages radiates an intensity not seen previously in the series.
A Dark Way to Glory provides readers the time to evaluate and come to terms with the shocking truths revealed in the final pages of the previous book, Tower of the King's Daughter. Each major character has now faced a crossroads and made his/her choice for the future. Julianne de Rance, daughter of the King's Shadow, has chosen to wed and then steal away (reluctantly) from her husband, risking love and life to follow the instructions of a mysterious djinni. With her is Elisande, an enigmatic young lady from Surayon, the "enfolded land" which the forces of Outremer seek to find and destroy; her friendship with Julianne is only one of several reasons she travels to Rhabat. In part, she goes to thwart her hated father Rudel, the jongleur whom we now know is a statesman of Surayon - as is Redmond, the torture victim rescued from the cells beneath Roq de Rancon. Jemel, a Sharai fighter whose blood brother fell at the hands of the knight Sieur Anton d'Escrivey, strips himself of all tribal affiliation and insists on accompanying the party for reasons of his own. At the heart of the whole story, though, stands young Marron; he is a truly sympathetic character who has, despite the best of intentions, betrayed the holy order of the Knights Ransomers, his master knight, and now his very own people. Circumstances beyond his control have made him the Ghost Walker, holder of the darkly mysterious, deadly force known as the Daughter. In this book, the complex secrets of the Daughter slowly begin to reveal themselves.
The desert peoples of Outremer have prayed for the return of the Ghost Walker for centuries, dreaming of the day their most awesome weapon, the Daughter, would be taken up once again by the Ghost Walker and used to destroy their enemies. No one among these people would have ever chosen Marron to be the Daughter's human vessel; the lad has seen and done things that truly haunt him, and he refuses to kill again. Certainly, the enigmatic Shadow Dancers, untold generations of whom have prepared to serve the Ghost Walker when he returns, are certainly not well pleased by the weakness of the chosen one (whom they insist on accompanying across the desert). I have to admit that the revelations of the previous book caused me to place some distance between myself and Marron, but his struggles to face up to the almost impossible challenges and internal struggles he must face as the Ghost Walker warmed me to him once again. He is still really just a boy, but he carries the greatest burdens in all of Outremer within his very body and soul. Young Elisande is fast becoming as interesting a character as Marron, though. The first two Outremer books failed to divulge many of her secrets, but her character grows tremendously as she and her party find their way across the desert. The depth and range of her emotions and thoughts threaten to force Julianne, a strong female character in her own right, somewhat into the background for the time being.
I daresay that Brenchley's bold revelations regarding Marron at the end of Tower of the King's Daughter may have rubbed some readers the wrong way. It certainly forced me to step back and reappraise everything I had just read. I would urge all readers to forge ahead with the series, though. I was appalled by the dark secret that was revealed, but Marron reemerges as an extraordinarily deep, enigmatic, and sympathetic soul in the pages of A Dark Way to Glory. Few fantasy writers can equal the power and richness of Chaz Brenchley's prose, and I am more excited than ever to see what this visionary author has in store for me in the remaining Outremer books.

Good advice.......2007-08-11
I found this book on my first read to be informative, well sourced, and well thought out. Marilyn offers many tips on diet and supplements, many of which I'm trying to implement but I'm having a little trouble with the dietary because I'm a vegetarian who doesn't eat too many eggs or dairy, and she recommends 3 servings a day of dairy but then goes on to let you know that there can be some problems associated with dairy for infertile women, and that if you have PMS you can help the symptoms sometimes by avoiding dairy. Anyway, I thought the rest of the advice seems sound and is worth trying! It's a well-written book and I'm going to recommend it.
skeptical about some of these reviewers.......2007-03-30
As I was perusing the reviews to decide whether or not I wanted to purchase this book, one thing has struck me as strange. Has anyone noticed that all the five star reviews are from "a reader" and are written in basically the same style? All of them are very well-written, complete with proper grammar---the kind of correct grammar that only a professional writer uses. It's making me skeptical about the good reviews this book has recieved.
not much info.......2007-03-16
I didn't find this book very helpful in listing what foods to eat or not. It was just general information. No real gems of knowledge. Basically eating a lowfat diet is recommended. Seems out-of-date.
A must have for every woman.......2007-03-09
Here is information which is hard to find anywhere else about how to stay healthy and off dangerous drugs which doctors are wont to prescribe to women.
My wife tried out this information since she had had pre-esclempsia with her first pregnancy. The doctors claim still to this day not to know what causes it. It is linked with maternal malnutrtion and especially deficiencies in B6, and magnesium. The amounts Shannon recommends are right on target to prevent pre-esclempsia. My wife says the recommendations for PMS are fantastic. One reads about women taking dangerous drugs in order to stop heavy bleeding. There are safe, healthful and more effective alternatives which Shannon explains.
Pretty good.......2007-03-08
This book has some interesting information on nutrition and fertility/cycles. It does stray from the topic a couple times though and focuses on proper ways to raise a child or gardening or other topics not totally related to fertility or cycles. But, I still found those sections interesting, even if not really on topic.
I think the book has good information for those who are having trouble with PMS, anovulation, heavy cycles, etc. But, I do think some of her vitamin recommendations are a bit extreme. One of the charts recommends more vitamin A than other sources I've read deem safe for pregnant women. But, the author has a master's in a nutrition related field and has had around 8 children (one of those was born to her close to age 50), so it seems she knows quite a bit about the topic. For people looking for other books related to fertility and cycles, I highly recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler.
Book Description
A leading seller for many years, this book has helped prepare thousands of readers for careers as food scientists, foodservice managers, dieticians, and extension agents. Written for the beginner, it provides clear, straightforward explanations of all of the basic principles of food preparation. It treats the chemistry involved in a way that is non-threatening and does not interfere with the flow of the book. The first part covers basic principles, preparing the way for discussions in subsequent chapters. The new edition encompasses the latest information on technological advances in food preparation and processing. It also deals with the effect of shifting demographics on food trends, and the increasing body of knowledge available to the general populace about nutrition. The volume addresses food choices and sensory characteristics, food economics and convenience, food safety, food regulations and standards, principles of cookery, fats, frying and emulsions, sweeteners, crystallization, starch, and cereal grain, bakery products, produce, dairy products and eggs, meat, poultry and seafood, beverages and food preservation. For Dietitians and those in family and consumer sciences.

Solid introduction to food science, rough around the edges.......2003-11-23
This book provides a solid introduction to the science of food. It describes what food is made of at the chemical level, and how food reacts to various cooking processes. The information presented in this book is essential to understanding how food substances behave in the kitchen.
This book is intended for students in food science or culinary arts courses, but anyone wanting to deepen his or her knowledge of food would benefit from reading it. It is a textbook, not light reading, however. Alton Brown's "Food + Heat = Cooking" is a much more fun read, although not nearly as comprehensive as this book.
Although the book starts at a fairly basic level, readers with a high school-level understanding of chemistry will get much more out of it. Most technical terms are defined in the margin of the pages where they are first used. Some of the definitions are simply baffling, however. For example, mass is defined as "the tendency of an object to remain at rest if it is stationary or to continue in motion if it is already moving." Most people call this inertia, not mass, and although the two are basically synonymous, this definition would simply confuse someone trying to visualize a kilogram of flour in motion.
Another drawback of this book is the illustrations and photographs. While some are clear and helpful, entirely too many are faded, blurry relics from the 1970s. Low-resolution photos are blown up to fill half a page. Techniques like boning a whole chicken breast (p. 745) are illustrated by muddled line drawings. The book was obviously designed on the cheap, as far too many photographs are practically ads for Dole and Land o' Lakes with ridiculous captions like "These fruit smoothies...make a wonderful addition to any breakfast." Attributions should have been confined to a photo credit list, rather than tacking onto every caption commercial messages like "Courtesy of World Kitchens Inc., makers of Baker's Secret."
These rough edges aside, Introductory Foods is a well-written text on food science, presenting essential information in an understandable way.
This isn't the 70's anymore!.......1999-09-18
I had to get this book for my foods class at school and even though this is a new edition, the pictures are from the 1970's!! The publisher's and authors need to take a look at their datebooks because the rest of the world is heading into the 21st century! With all the new technology out there, the book should contain up to date pictures of foods and meal presentations. I'm very disappointed in this books presentation of food. The only reason I give the book 3 stars is because the information is useful.

Horse Crazy: Women and the Horses They Love.......2007-03-23
I love this book, the stories are very inspiring.
Crazy for Horses.......2006-12-14
Horse Crazy is a marvelous collection of shorts that helps explain the special relationship women and horses enjoy. In the story Galloping Into Forty, author Kimberley Freeman describes riding on a beach at a full out, hell-bent-for-leather gallop. More than any other passage in the book, this one allowed me to understand the lure of horses--and want to go racing across the sand on a horse. Charlotte Mendel's Mucho Muchacho stands out as well, and if you want to understand why women are loco para caballos, I couldn't recommend this book more.
Having little up close and personal experience with horses, I'd never really understood the power--or more accurately, sheer horsepower--they possess. But after reading this collection from dozens of authors and viewpoints, I've finally gotten a glimpse into the majesty and mystique of horses that attracts girls and women of all ages.
Horse Crazy - A Stress Relieving and Fun Read.......2006-01-31
In the rush of Christmas shopping, I looked at a copy of "Horse Crazy". I was thinking of a last-minute gift for my school's generous and good-natured receptionist who adores her aging horse. Impulsively, I bought a second copy. Just in case someone showed up at my house with an unexpected gift, I could save face with this book. But instead I left it next to my sofa.
Sometimes I am daunted by books. My intention of being absorbed by a 500 page book are often foiled by multiple preemptions. But this book allows me to disappear into well-written, funny and touching stories written by smart, simpatico women. I especially liked "It's Only a Paper Horse" by Stephanie Losee. My favorite image is when she describes her husband trying to please her horse-obsessed daughter's requests for drawings. She says, "Tom's sketching abilities were limited to the creation of a single cartoon fish, which he drew over and over in a vain attempt to be useful." That so resonated with me as a parent, and also made me chuckle.
So I highly recommend this book as a fun, touching, well-written book of stories. Even if you don't adore horses.
Customer Reviews:
love it, .......2007-09-17
i loved the book. it has so much in it, from start to finish, it ll help at every stage. i love her idea of enchanting everything. it's so much fun to do that. i also met this author, she is a lovely, nice lady, who seemed very sincere, its hard to imagine her "laughing all the way to the bank" as another reviewer suggested. So about that gardening? well, i have a nearly black thumb, seriously, i had these little seeds that really didnt want to grow, they would wither as soon as they sprouted, or not sprout at all. well they are hardly little sprouts now and are doing great. her stuff is easy to follow, set up in a good format, AND easy for me, the black thumbed beginner, to understand and utilize. i cant wait for the next growing season to start becuase i m going to be a bit more ambitious. theres also recipies in there for getting rid of ants and roaches, keeping fungus from getting your plants and all kinds of things, honestly, even if you throw out all the magickal stuff, theres plenty of good gardening advice, at least seems to me to be.
Another treasure by Dorothy Morrison!.......2007-08-28
This is the perfect gift for the "green-thumbed" Witch in your circle of friends or family, as I'm sure that they will love it as much as I do. I started "magickally gardening" before I got this book, and I almost wish I had waited until getting this book before starting, due to Morrison's ability to inspire the reader to enchant every step of the gardening process. One can tell by reading this that she is VERY much into gardening, and wants to get the reader motivated to feel the same, at least to some extent. I was also pleasantly surprised to find the chapter about Mother Nature's Household - natural ways to remove pests from the home without killing them or using harsh chemicals, and natural housecleaning without the potentially-deadly side effects.
I have quite a few books by Ms Morrison, and this one shines.
all around great information.......2005-09-01
From preparing the soil, to designing the space, to collecting the harvest, and finally to using your herbs, Dorothy Morrison has covered everything. She gave me ideas for planting, composting, and crafting that I had not thought of before. Whether you are a beginning herbalist, like I am, or experienced, I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't find good ideas. I especially liked the fact that the herbal recipes were for cooking, cleaning, crafts, skin care, and other uses.
Delightful, practical and magical.......2005-01-24
I've had this book for some time and hadn't seriously read it till today. Its enjoyable, practical, and well organized. For those looking for more--and for the author to do ALL the work for you, look elsewhere. This is a witch's garden at its simpliest, something I prefer. Who has time for more? The spells and chants are simple, to the point, and yes there are other books out there that are more in depth, but for me... gardening, harvesting and using plants and herbs in my daily magical life IS simple. If you want the plot of a garden, or indept herbal/plant usage, I suggest Cunningham, Rodale's Herbs, or Garden Witchery.
Pot pourri of interesting ideas and good bed time reading..........2004-06-06
Dorothy Morrison's BUD, BLOSSOM & LEAF contains something old, something new and some things borrowed from other gardeners, as well as a good deal of original material based on her own experiences. She combines all these bits of gardening wisdom and lore into a practical but fun book that has more to do with using herbs than growing them. I appreciate the old bits, such as being reminded of the multiple uses of Chamomile, a natural antibiotic remedy and a soothing balm, and new information seldom found in gardening books - such as how to make wine from excess fruit and other plant materials. The best part of her book is entitled "Mother Nature's Household" where Ms Morrison offers ideas and suggestions for everything from `Cleaning with Herbs' to `Herbal Beauty'. She includes recipes for products for the bath and boudoir, as well as the kitchen.
If you are a new gardener, you will probably want to purchase another gardening book that goes into greater depth concerning the care and feeding (growing) of herbs, as Ms Morrison's discussion of gardening techniques is directed to the experienced gardener and, not the novice. There are a number of herbal gardening books on the market, for example Rodale'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS, which is a good place to begin to learn more about herbs. Herbs are generally annuals (Basil, balms, Borage) or perennials (Lavender, Artemisia, Echinacea) so bed preparation is similar to that undertaken for flower gardening. However, every experienced gardener knows not all flowers have the same requirements. For example, if you are going to raise lavender, it helps to know that it prefers dry alkaline growing conditions. Like most flowers, most herbs require lots of sun (many come from the Mediterranean), so you'll have better luck growing herbs on a sunny balcony, than in a shady moist location.

A facinating and soul searching experience to find peace........1998-05-22
As Rachel Lieberman's husband,I have first hand experience with this book. It is truly a labor of love, a most reader friendly, non-technical book. The book reaches out and touches those who are searching for experience, strength and hope in their lives.
This, her first book, holds your interest throughout with personal poety, journaling and prose. This book helped me with some of my dysfunctional issues and to better understand the nature of this insidious dis-ease of codependency that so many of us suffer from.
Our relationship together, has developed and matured, as a result of Rachel's desire to heal and find the person inside that she was meant to be. Many readers have expressed to me their admiration and praise of Rachel's sharing her journey to wellness.I recommend this book to all who are struggling with dysfunction to find themselves.
IT WAS RIVETING,I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!.......1997-11-25
THE AUTHOR HAD TREMENDOUS COURAGE TO DISCLOSE HER STORY IN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL WAY. SO MANY COULD BENEFIT FROM HER EXPERIENCE, STRENGTH AND HOPE AND THE HEALING ING MESSAGES OF THIS NON-FICTION BOOK.IT IS A JOURNEY TO PEACE AND SOUL HEALING.

I returned the book.......2003-03-28
I can't believe this- I bought the book too and the CD didn't have the Demo version. I even returned it because I felt cheated too!
The book was printed near September 11th 2001 and I am very sorry for the dedication. But one would think a major publishing company might, BY NOW, realize this problem and reissue the book with the corrected CD version- apparently not!
I just hope Ms. Thomas got her check before these books were bought by so many disappointed people!
Misleading cover info or can't tell a book by its cover.......2002-11-07
Another review states that the CD DOES NOT have the demo version of Quark on it and I totally agree. I feel cheated, yes you can download the demo, but what even gripes me more is that the fonts for the lessons are not included, couldn't they have used fonts that are some of the regular Windows fonts.
CD contains only lesson files.......2002-09-10
While the book itself appears excellent, the CD contains only lesson files, not (as the book's backcover states) a demo version of QuarkXPress, which was the main reason I selected this guide. The demo software has to be downloaded from the Quark web site. Since I use a modem, this took some time. What should have been 5 stars gets downgraded to 3 for a misleading features list and not providing a helpful link to the missing software.

Book Description
Neither American history nor American society anticipated, sanctioned, or encouraged the development of either Black intellectuals or a Black middle class. Both emerged and developed against horrendous obstacles and both are great achievements. Both were sanctioned and given moral direction by the American Negro Academy, an organization founded in 1897 by Alexander Crummell, W.E.B. Du Bois, Francis Grimke, and others for the purpose of organizing Black intellectuals to defend and redeem Blacks, through intellectual, artistic, and scientific achievements in the face of racist detractors, and to help the Black middle class develop as the leadership class of Black America. Black intellectuals have had a difficult time fulfilling a leadership role, partly because they have failed to remember the three cultural heritages of Black people: Black, African, and Euro-American. The times demand that Black intellectuals approach themselves and their world from all three cultural perspectives, for the sake of Black people and for the sake of America, both of which desperately need their leadership.
