Book Description
Simla 1922. While the rest of India bakes in the hot season, up in the pine-scented coolness of the Himalayan hills the English have recreated a vision of home. Here are half-timbered houses, amateur theatricals, gymkhanas and a glittering vice-regal court for the socialites. The summer capital of the British Raj is fizzing with the energy of the jazz age. It is toward this country that detective Joe Sandilands is heading as the guest of the governor of Bengal. But when Joe's travelling companion, a Russian opera singer, is shot dead at his side on the road to Simla, he finds himself plunged into a murder investigation. As Joe begins to unravel the mystery which has its roots in the aftermath of the First World War, he discovers that behind the sparkling facade of Simla lies a trail of murder, vice and blackmail.

Always enjoyable.......2006-11-08
AS before, Barbara Cleverley's mystery series holds ones interest and keeps you wanting the next one!
no jewel in the crown.......2006-04-20
If you want to read something purely for entertainment that doesn't require you to concentrate, this book may be all right. By the end, in fact long before the end, I became impatient with it. The start is very promising, lots of action immediately, then for about 100 pages not much interesting happens. The action continues to be really uneven and the plot is as far-fetched and improbable as anything I've read. There are a lot of twists and the characters are never who they seem to be, which helped hold my interest somewhat. I did not, however, get very interested in the main character (what is a Commander from Scotland Yard doing fooling around in the Indian hills anyway)? I also thought, that while the author did write good description in many places, I really didn't get the "feel" of India as I have from other books. To be fair, the author may have intended to show how the British tried to recreate England wherever they happened to be in the Empire, and ignored the surrounding environment. If so, this was done effectively. The title seemed like a mistake. Ragtime music was popular from about 1890 to 1910, by the 1920s it would have been passe, and it has nothing to do with this story at all. Did the author never hear of the 1920s being referred to as the JAZZ age? In fact, throughout the book, everybody is talking about and listening to jazz records, so the title is inappropriate. My rating on this book is just about neutral.
Entertaining but not brilliant.......2006-04-03
This is my first Joe Sandilands novel.
The story starts out at a rapid pace, giving you a flavour of Simla during the British Raj. Towards the end however, the plot tugs at the bounds of credulity and it goes completely downhill.
It is an entertaining story though, and well told one. Some of the dialogues are somewhat long-drawn, making it obvious that it's more for the benefit of the reader than something that two policemen would say to each other while discussing a murder.
Although the story is set in Simla, all the major characters are British. Apart from some scenes set in the streets of Simla, there aren't very many colourful descriptions of India. The story may well be set in the Scottish Highlands or somewhere suitably adventurous.
A few minor quibbles: Gandhi, when he is mentioned briefly, is spelled as "Ghandi" -- an irritatingly common misspelling by Western authors. Also, the father of one of the characters, Rheza Khan, who is a Pathan, is referred to as the "rajah". No Pathan chief would ever call himself a "rajah".
Overall, it is a good read for a relaxing weekend.
Transparent.......2005-08-29
I found the plot of "Ragtime in Simla" to be fairly obvious very early in the book. In addition, the writing was not intellectually stimulating and the dialogue didn't strike me as being of either the period or the place.
I had purchased this book because I had recently finished Laurie King's "The Game," which takes place in the about same time period and vicinity. Since "The Game" was definitely 5 stars, I was anxious to prolong the atmosphere with another book of similar subject matter and location. Unhappily, "Ragtime in Simla" was the wrong choice and so disappointing that I won't bother with any of this author's other books.
Enter British Colonial India..........2005-04-18
Although I am an avid mystery fan, I also enjoy historical fiction. Ever since reading The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye years ago, I have been fascinated by the British Raj and India in general. This is a fast paced and intricately plotted murder mystery set in Simla in 1922. Joe Sandilands, Scotland Yard, is an endearing character Lovely ladies with secrets abound in the story. I enjoyed every bit of it, and can't wait to read the other books in the series!

Customer Reviews:
A fitting companion to "Sherwood Forest".......2005-10-09
I thoroughly enjoyed Lisa Croll Di Dio's latest book, "Standing Stones." It is a robust, passionate story of men and women who are facing the challenges of our world in a time long past. These are families made up of Witches and their Protectors, living in the England of the Middle Ages. They know their situation is dire, and they struggle fiercely against the widening impositions of the Church. They fight to the death to maintain the sanctity of their beliefs, their rites and their beloved Goddess.
Croll Di Dio's descriptions are both heartwarming and heartbreaking. We ride alongside legendary heros and heroines full of strength and single-minded determination, who are sometimes aided by magic and sometimes alone. These are people who are committed to each other, who feel community and family are one and the same. We undeniably feel their emotions through all the joys they share and the calamities they endure.
And best of all, you get to spend more time with all the wonderful people you met in "Sherwood Forest," plus an extra one or two. It is an exciting, sometimes erotic and always spellbinding work of fiction, and I recommend it highly.

Complete Guide to Symptoms.......2007-09-17
This is a good book. It will help answer you questions about your health.
Complete Guide to Symptoms and Then Some.......2007-05-14
This book is wonderful. I had the 4th edition and used it for years so I was already familar with the format of it. The new one includes a DVD which is even better. This book is easy enough to understand so that even people with minimal medical knowledge can still find the information they need. I like the way it is formatted so that once you do find the illness, you can find the surgery with the approx. care, medications, etc. that you can expect to go with it plus they also cross refrence any difference type of procedures that might be used. With patients having to be so much more informed these days, I take this book with me every time I go to the doctor. My former Dr. didn't like it but my new does and discusses anything thing I have questions about and shows me where to find it in the book. I also have the pill book put out by the same group.

This book looks like a free publication that you would pick up at your vet. It does have very good information but I wouldn't pay over $5 (total) for it.
Get this book as soon as you think of having a baby!.......2002-10-29
Excellent book. We have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks that were the focus of our universe for five years until our son was born. They are well trained but we had no idea how they would react to a new addition. We wanted to respect their feelings and not have any problems because of things we did wrong. This book was really helpful. We took a lot of advice from this book and we have not had any problems. Our son is two and he loves the dogs. The dogs are very tolerant of his antics and seem to love him too. I think dogs and kids can be great friends if their owners facilitate this process.
Great advice- real world and positive!.......2002-02-23
This book had the best advice. She really understands the importance of positive interactions between parents, babies and dogs. She gives specific answers to specific problems that are doable. I highly recommend this book. It's an easy read, and packed with useful information. She takes the positive approach to working with your dog and your kids too. It has helped me and our 7 y.o. "baby" poodle, who was the big baby before my son came along. This book was essential in helping to make a smoother transition. I couldn't find even close to the amount of information in this book in other sources. The vet gave us a one-page flyer, and Dr. Sears recommends finding another home for your dog! I use it as a reference, and highly recommend it to every parent with a dog, wether you have a "problem" dog or not, it helps you to know what to do to teach your dog how to handle the big changes and not make mistakes even with the best of intentions (like giving your dog extra attention when the baby isn't around- gives the dog the message that when the baby isn't there, she gets attention, so the baby is a bad thing).
Essential reading for would be Mums with a dog........1999-05-07
This is essential reading for all Mums-to-be and new Mums. It prepares the dog owning family for the arrival of the new baby, teaches how to avoid problems when baby does arrive and how to have a happy baby/dog relationship from day one. It teaches how to solve the problems before they happen by preparing your dog for the birth of your baby.
I am a dog behaviour counsellor and I recommend this book very strongly to all pregnant women with a dog in the family.

Book Description
People of all ages and interests will love this book! The children steal the show in this rich selection of 190 vintage photographs documenting how children have celebrated Christmas from 1870 through the 1950s. The venerable Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and Pere Noel shown in these photographs have all evolved into the American figure of our jolly Santa Claus. Some photographs record elaborately decorated trees that touch the ceilings of fancy Victorian parlors, branches smothered in tinsel, blown glass ornaments and a medley of antique toys. Other photographs document the more humble surroundings of pioneer kitchens with tabletop trees lovingly decorated with handmade ornaments of cranberries, cookies or gilded nuts. This book is sure to become a warm friend that will bring a smile to your heart every time that you open it. 190 Color photos.

Beautiful Memory of Christmas.......2005-11-27
The Cherish Me Always series of four books is a series of thematic vintage photos and photo postcards. Cherish Me Always: Images of Christmas Past is the Christmas book in this collection. The pages are filled with vintage photos of children, toys, dolls, Christmas trees, santas and angels with photo information and poetry intertwined to set the mood.
The photos weave together beautifully our American memory of Christmas past, from 1870 through the 1950's. The later photos could be family photos showing how mom or dad celebrated Christmas. Some of the oldest photos look eerie or unfamilar to our current experience with Christmas, yet these images bring forth a timeless sense of the season. These Christmas images unite us with the common traditions, wishes and feelings for Christmas.
Social history lessons.......2004-02-11
This book is a little bit better organized and informational, if compared with the authors' similar volume, "Cherish Me Always, a Century of Dolls." The guide to photographic terms in the back and all of the other credits and references will be very useful for researchers. Once again, I am touched by how many of the people in these photos look so unhappy; I know it wasn't the style to smile, but c'mon! It was Christmas! The authors' books will also be of interest to social anthropologists and sociologists, who study pics like these for the information they provide about the history of the family, family relationships, and society. I had never heard of artificial feather christmas trees until I read this book, and found that factoid very interesting--why do we always think the present is so unique? :> The notes provided about the nativity and Putz scenes taught me a few things about my own Czechoslovakian family heritage. I also found it of interest that many of the most common items shown in the photos are actually still being made and sold, in very similar form, today. Here in Southern California, we have an import store called "Cost Plus," and the traditions behind many of the items they offer at Christmastime were unknown to me until I read this book. Thanks for the lessons! SMS

Lacking lots of fruit tree information.......2002-08-04
There is a fair amount of information if you mostly want to grow certain nut trees (pecan, walnuts, hazelnuts) and citrus. I would have liked to see a lot more information on less common nut varieties (e.g., chestnuts, pine nuts, etc.) And there was little to no information on apple, pear, plum, etc. There are better books that cover fruit in general, and there are citrus specialty books if that's your main interest.
Very Informative!.......2002-07-21
This is a great read for a novice tree grower!
Basic informaion of growing fruit & nuts.......1999-08-22
This is a good book for those wanting very basic information on planting, propagating, caring for, & harvesting the fruit of the trees. More detailed information is given on citrus & exotic fruits as well as on a few nut varieties.
Several gadgets that can be used to make caring for the tree easier are also listed along with places to get them. There is also a small but delicious recipe section as well as planting & apple-tasting record templates.
There is great chart that explains how to organically fix or prevent many diseases & pests that can injure your trees. Another chart lists zones, chill hours, height, pollinator & susceptibilities for about 16 trees.
A bibliography & many associations where you can find information on growing specific trees are also included. Information on where to buy trees is as well as a list of tree museums is a nice bonus.

A must-have for the true florida naturalist........1999-09-18
I never realized how often I would use this book in my studies of florida's ecosystems until I purchased it. It is an extremely thourough "all-in-one" botanical description of the state that appears to benefit those roughly familiar with our flora. My only wish is that more complete descriptions and illustrations were given for each species i.e. "A Flora of Tropical Florida" and "Flora of the Bahama Archipelago". These enhancements would no doubt increase the cost of the book though and at its price it is still affordable. For its completeness though once again there is no equal and I consider it a necesity.
The only book of its kind covering the entire state........1998-08-28
This book is a series of keys to identify all Florida vascular plants from ferns to sunflowers; from the temperate to the tropical. Although mainly for a more serious botanist, the keys seem to home in to the main non-technical characters for field identification. This brevity is perhaps a problem when plant material is limited. There are no illustrations except a map of Florida counties (and one plant picture below the title). A synopsis of the flora is given (covers 3,834 species of which 1,180 are introduced and 155 endemics). A glossary will assist the laymen and the forgetful with terminology.
Good features:
1. Taxonomy/nomenclature appears to be open to the recent revisions that were unfortunately not accepted by more conservative authors such as Cronquist (e.g. Eupatorium is treated as several genera here).
2. Explicitly states whether the plant is native, endemic, or introduced, and where in Florida (no maps, but a complete atlas available online.
3. All in one very portable volume for reasonable price; pages sturdy with legible sized print.
4. The book includes endemic species (e.g. Boltonia apalachicolensis) which were new discoveries since Clewell (1985) wrote the guide to the panhandle region.
The main complaints that I have (beside not being in Florida to test it out) are:
1. Families arranged by Englar/Prantl system and not shown in page header, hindering search for families (although genera are arranged alphabetically).
2. Aloe vera is listed in Agavaceae but doesn't appear in the key to genera.
3. No descriptions (but will be in future work according to author) END

Review of "The Shrubs and Woody Vines of Florida: A Reference and Field Guide".......2005-08-07
The Shrubs and Woody Vines of Florida: A Reference and Field Guide is an excelent field guide. I recommend it. Great alyour and design. Very informative.
I take my battered copy everywhere........2004-12-01
When I first moved to SW Georgia, this book was recommended to me by a local field researcher. I used it daily trying to identify all the species in my yard and on the hiking trails. It was, and still is, indispensible. I found it to be highly comprehensive, well written and a wonderful aid for landscaping my yard. It is not a key so some knowledge of plant families is handy, but not necessary.

Let type talk.......2007-08-05
I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this book before now. I bought a copy soon after it was published in 1990 and I've dipped into ever since, if only to appreciated the great book design by Kit Hinrichs and look at some knockout typography in the reproduced printed pieces.
The 160 pages are split into three sections: first Hinrichs expresses his thoughts on design and typography in a Q&A format, followed by another Q&A format but this time dealing with the everyday practical problems any designer faces in communicating ideas. Both these sections keep the focus on typography. The rest of the book uses actual printed examples (designed mostly by Pentagram) to backup the ideas in the front.
The sixty case study examples cover most commercial work though I should say they are big corporations that obviously went to Pentagram because of their impressive creative reputation. All of the examples are strong on typography and you'll see covers and inside pages, packaging, logos, a newspaper, annual reports, books and more. What is missing from the selection is advertising and magazines. Pentagram is neither an ad agency or a publisher, the nearest they get to this is Dave Hillman's redesign of the London 'Guardian' newspaper in 1988.
'Type Wise' is certainly worth getting. It presents some basic design and typographic assumptions in a fascinating visual way.

Book Description
"This collection is a testimony of hope and endurance through the power of writing. The experience that unites us and that we want to share with you is the experience of exile, of belonging neither in Chile nor the United States: our experience of existing between two cultures and not feeling comfortable in either of them, of choosing the path of political activism and uniting our destiny with that of the voices of marginalized women."
Marjorie Agosín
"I am convinced that [these letters] should be made public as a testimony of the life of women in Latin America, and of the Latina immigrants who live in the United States. The histories interwoven in our correspondence are not exceptions, they are the norm. These episodes from the lives of Marjorie and Emma are part of a voluminous tome of common histories that have been lived and continue to be lived by Latin American women, from our grandmothers to our daughters.
Emma Sepúlveda
This collection of letters chronicles a remarkable, long-term friendship between two women who, despite differences of religion and ethnicity, have followed remarkably parallel paths from their first adolescent meeting in their native Chile to their current lives in exile as writers, academics, and political activists in the United States. Spanning more than thirty years (1966-2000), Agosín's and Sepúlveda's letters speak eloquently on themes that are at once personal and politicalfamily life and patriarchy, women's roles, the loneliness of being a religious or cultural outsider, political turmoil in Chile, and the experience of exile.

Letters: a lost literary gender.......2004-07-08
It is an interesting book about the correspondence between two friends that meet in their country,Chile. But, life is very unjust, and for political reasons both have to leave their land. The letters, that they write to each other through many years, tell their stories of survival and they explain, from their point of view and in a epistolar style, what each of them have to endure to became women citizens, mothers, academics and profesors, etc. in this country. Their experiences are not unknow or irreal, they are very realistics, a common ground for many women that are gone through the same or similar path. This book is a document: a good book for women and men who love literature, books, and academic work.
