Sleeper.......2001-03-24

I picked up Rilke on Black in a remainder lot somewhere and read it months later on a whim. For it's faults, this is a first novel of tremendous intensity by a writer whose works I now intend to hunt down. It's certainly energised me to track him and end up dashing this off.

Stylistically, Bruen throws so many punches so rapidly in this first novel that it's hard to track down influences. Certainly he's read and studied the classics, from Hammett to Ross Macdonald. For California, tho, substitute working class London. And the story is told by a guy Lew Archer didn't get to when he was a troubled adolescent.

Having mentioned faults, I should say that the rythmn of this book seems a bit off to me at times. The sheer impact of the narrative, however, tends to obscure the problem.

I've come away feeling Bruin's peers are more along the lines of Lou Reed and Iggy Pop than any literary school, and this is certainly no slur. Rilke on Black is a short slam dance of a book that casts a rather long shadow, a small canvas with details that emerge long after you've finished the book.

Certainly this isn't mass market stuff. If you appreciate precise, focused prose in a deceptively tight plot with disturbing undertones left and right, however, give Rilke on Black a shot. I feel this is something of a find.

Mediocre noir........2000-05-07

This is a rather weak example of noir writing. Bruen uses the short, choppy style, but his sentences seem empty of the toughness that characterizes the best noir (I'm thinking of Ellroy or Thompson). He also has some very annoying (and frequently used) stylistic devices which detract. Throw in some high and low culture references which aren't even necessary, weak characterizations, and an abrupt and unsatisfying conclusions, and you've got "Rilke on Black".

Ho-Hum.......1999-07-24

Very short basic kidnapping story revolving around an aging bouncer type, a sexy young woman and their dodgy partner in crime. Of course since this is noir, they can't trust each other one bit as they run around South London and nasty things happen. Lots of sex and killing, pretty ho-hum stuff.

Wondering if you should read this companion to the Darksword trilogy?.......2005-11-25

Darksword Adventures was originally written as a role-playing game supplement based on the Darksword trilogy. As a result, I very nearly bypassed it, since I am not interested in the gaming aspect of Darksword. After thumbing through the book, I decided to buy it and I do not regret it.

Although there is a lot of gaming info in the book, it is easy to skip. Included with the gaming information is a lot of history and explanation of magic in the Darksword world. Anyone who enjoyed reading the trilogy should find this information helpful and interesting.

This book is not essential, but if you are thinking about re-reading the trilogy someday, reading Darksword Adventures first may help to fill in some holes and improve the experience.

But I found this addition to the trilogy an excellent companion, adding history and explaing a few things about Simkin. If you are going to read the trilogy, you definitely need to read this book, too.

This has to be the WORST book I've read so far. I couldn't even finish it. It's that bad. How this author was able to get this book published with the [...] . From the start it's like he doesn't know what to say, so he makes up some crap. Avoid this book and those fake reviews! Anyone that reads expects more from any book. And this one doesn't deliver anything more then a headache trying to decipher what the author is talking about.

Simply awful.......2004-06-15

I considered giving this 5 stars because after reading parts of the book, and the author's pathetic attempts to make it look like a lot of people like this pile of crap, (all those 5 star reviews were written by him by the way) I laughed my ass off. To the author: seriously dude, don't compound the sin of writing this travesty by submitting fake reviews of it, or at least make it a little less obvious.

I think this book is very exciting to read, despite the obvious supposed bad reviews. I curent believe those reviews are faked by narrow minded unedcuated individuals who lack backbone and moral courage to be considered a human being. The Book on the other hand is great book about the real heroes of american the Soldiers, Saliors, airman, and Marines. Who guarantee life and liberty for america. All I can tell you is this an interesting perspective inside american elite units. It be a bit dry and some of the spelling is off. But reading this book taught methe hardships these poeple go through to earn the right to protect this country. I find appalling that someone or people are using this review of a good book for a political agenda and ruining the reputation of amazon. Go ahead a call this review fake. Because the people who wrote the bad reviews are fakes and lairs. Again this book is good it may be long, but hey every good book starts out long and sometimes uniteresting. open your eyes to the world of heroes.

Worth Your Time .......2006-11-10

This is definitely a book worth reading, whether you are dealing with your own addiction (of any kind) or if someone you know is. It is written from a "spiritual" perspective, though not spiritual in the sense of any one particular religious or philosophical tradition. For example, the author looks for inspiration from Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, etc.

Thomas Bien writes in a gentle, understanding and encouraging tone. This is one of those books that can be picked up and read a few pages at a time, from any point. It is worth your time and money.

Clinicians and those in recovery.......2006-11-04

An excellent book with a good line into spirituality for those with an aversion to organized religion. Those working in the recovery often have a block thown up when trying to get a client to release his/her preconceived ideas about manipulating the environment. This book provides an excellent approach toward the concept of spirituality as a separate entity from religious beliefs without impinging on them.

A flexible, integrated approach to overcoming addiction..........2004-02-09

Mindful recovery is a book that focuses on maintaining your abstinence from any addiction, once you have made the decision to quit: "...if you can build a happy, fulfilling, meaningful life, relapse will be much less of an issue." It's a flexible approach to recovery based on facing life with an attitude of acceptance, rather than running away from life through an addiction.

I love how Thomas and Beverly Bien integrated the spiritual concepts of the East with the more scientific ideas found in psychology: "While our approach is rooted in Eastern traditions of mindfulness...The West has its own approaches to mindfulness. Journaling, narrative psychology, insight-oriented psychotherapy, relationship work, and dream analysis...we present a blend of Eastern and Western wisdom." They also briefly touch upon the fallacy of black and white thinking, borrowed from cognitive styles of recovery. In ten "doorways," this book presents many little essays that elaborate on these themes through quotes, personal stories, and practical applications. By the time you finish this book, you will have a full understanding of mindfulness and how to use it to free yourself from addiction.

Mindful recovery, however, has a potential negative: the reader can easily become overwhelmed by the myriad of "Practices" the authors have developed to explore mindfulness in every capacity - work, relationships, dreams, and the like. The "Practices" seem to be endless. But the authors wisely predict this: "...having so many tools can also seem a little overwhelming - as though you had a lot of things to do and remember. It isn't so. Whenever you feel this way...remind yourself that there is really only one thing to remember and it is the simplest thing of all: to be mindful, to be aware."

I also strongly agree with their paradigm of change. It's a process of six stages, borrowed from James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente, who co-authored Changing for Good. And it's empowering, because their notion allows for relapse with a mentality of acceptance and learning: "...most people do go through these stages several times before establishing permanent change. For this reason, it is equally important to be able to view a slip...as a temporary setback rather than ultimate failure."

At the heart of this book are the practices of meditation and journaling. Regardless of how many Practices mentioned throughout the book, these two are definitely the twin pillars that support mindfulness. They are simple, flexible, and easy to implement in your life.

I highly recommend this book. Just make sure to stay on course with the simplicity of mindfulness, and let your intuition guide you as to how to implement it into your life.

Good alternative to AA and to non-chemical addictions.......2003-08-22

I had been searching unsuccessfully for a book that dealt with computer games addiction. A friend suggested that the 12-Step program could help with all kinds of addictions, but I was just not comfortable with the whole religious aspect of that model.
This book offered just what I needed. I could just substitute the words "computer gaming" whenever alcohol or drugs were mentioned, and the information related ever-so-well. The author writes with a warm, non-threatening style which really helped me to be able to confront my demons. I highly recommend it!!!

Great Book!.......2007-02-20

This is a really great book! I rode around like a wild thing, bareback, as a kid, and now I've just bought my first horse in 25 years. I'm rusty, my body is less elastic, and memories have dimmed. This book puts it all together in an easy to understand way--some of it I recognize from childhood, things that I did right without knowing why. Some of it I remember being taught. But much of it is new to me--tons of info on using my weight and seat, and what my hands are really supposed to be for.

The "100 Ways" format is excellent. Each way is presented on one page, or as a two-page spread before you, and at the bottom of the page is a bar with "Related Areas of Improvement" that lists three other "Ways" to check out that relate to your current page. With "100 Ways," I can skip topics that don't interest me right now (jumping) and leave them for later, without wading through chapters looking for what I need. The book is divided up into Seat and Weight, Hands and Arms, Head, Shoulders and Back, Legs, Non-communication, Schooling Techniques, and Mental Approach. I found the instructions to be clear most of the time.

I have a hard time with visualizing descriptions of what to do with my body --this book doesn't confuse me overly, most of the pictures are helpful. With some, though, it's hard to tell if it's a picture of what you should be doing, or what you shouldn't. There's also a little too much of "have a trained eye watch and comment" for those of us without many well-trained eyes around. The author also recommends lunge line work without reins a bit too often for those of us without access to that kind of training. But the good outweighs the bad--the vast majority is perfectly clear, and the author's discussion of the uses of your weight, hands, etc. is worth the price of admission alone. I found plenty to work on all by myself, and became conviced that I should indeed seek out some help for other things.

I can't say if this book is good for the young set, but if you are buying a horse after a long layoff, you can't go wrong with this book!

My riding instructors have recommended this book to me and to their other students. It is based on classical riding methods and includes a lot of pictures showing form, both good and bad.

Great book for classes on Greenhouse Production. Debbie Hamrick has written a great book that is a part of my horticulture class's Greenhouse Production curriculum. The book is presented and arranged by genus name, which is very helpful to a budding horticulturist. It offers detailed information on the production annuals, perennials, pot foliage plants, flowering potted plants, herbs, and vegetable bedding plants that are grown most in greenhouse production. Ms. Hamrick has presented great resources in this book to help growers decide on what to grow, tips about temperature, media, plant nutrition, irrigation, water quality, light, crop scheduling, and growth regulators. The details on propagation, growing, pest and disease control, troubleshooting, and post-harvest care have been very helpful since my class has grown Easter Lilies and Chrysanthemums.
