Book Description

Antique print dealer Maggie Summer is teaching a college course on "Myths in American Culture," using prints by Currier & Ives and other nineteenth century artists to illustrate her points. As a faculty advisor, she's also dealing with the problems of students who are single parents: problems that turn dangerous when a young mother is poisoned, and events twist Maggie's own thoughts about motherhood. She suspects a sinister connection between the past and the present, and her prints could provide valuable clues. But some secrets are too hard to see -- even for an expert like Maggie -- and some crimes hit too close to home...

Download Description

"Maggie Summer has three loves: her antique print business, Shadows; her career as a community college professor in Somerset County, New Jersey; and the new man in her life, Will Brewer. Her biological clock is pushing her to decide whether she's ready to add a fourth love: an adopted child. Although Will is on the road just now, Maggie's life is full. She uses prints by Currier & Ives, Thomas Nast, and William Ludwell Sheppard to illustrate her lectures on American cultural history, and Oliver and Dorothy Whitcomb, a wealthy couple who are on the college board, are two of her best customers. When the Whitcombs design and dedicate a special dormitory for single parents and their children, Maggie is thrilled to become the faculty adviser to the young parents. Her new assignment gives her plenty of time to think about what single parenthood would mean for her. Plenty of time -- until one of the young mothers is poisoned, and the web of danger at the dorm threatens to encircle Maggie. There is a killer on campus. Is it an outsider or someone Maggie knows and trusts? Does someone want to destroy Whitcomb House or the college? And is Maggie in as much danger as her students? As always, Maggie finds the answers to her questions in the antique prints she knows and loves. And this time, torn between her own needs and those of her students, the most important discoveries Maggie makes are about herself. Rich with appealing characters and fascinating insiders' lore about antique prints, Shadows on the Ivy is the best yet in this award-nominated series from an author who brilliantly brings together her knowledge of prints and her love of storytelling. 3 out of 5 stars the usual suspect.......2007-02-15

I liked her other two books, but as a retired academic, I often tire of mysteries set on campus. This is especially true when the villain is so obvious, not because of any weakness in her plotting, but because in "ivy" mysteries the bad guys are so often those whom most of us in the arts would choose--let me be coy here--not students, not faculty, not staff, guess who.

3 out of 5 stars prints and poisons.......2006-01-14

A college dorm especially for single parents and their children - an intriguing concept. And it seems to work until someone starts poisoning some of the single moms. Maggie, of course, as advisor to the house, becomes embroiled at the center of the tragedy. Besides doing her utmost to identify the killer, Maggie attempts to work her way thru several personal dilemmas. Should she have a child? Should she get married first, or will her experiences at the dorm give her the courage to become a single mom herself? What about her relationship with Will, which doesn't seem to meet many of her emotional needs?
None of these dilemmas is solved in Shadows/Ivy, but the killer is found and 2 mothers and daughters reunited. "Cozies" tend to lack suspense, and this is no exception. Otherwise, it's an OK mystery story.

4 out of 5 stars Fun read!.......2005-11-09

Daily free books arrive at my office from authors and publishers for review. Yet, I still purchase many for several reasons: I want to support the writers who provide us with so much pleasure, I enjoy a particular author and didn't receive the book from the publisher, and sometimes, it's just because I love the book cover and the book blurb intrigues me.

That is what happened to me as I was traveling recently. I needed a book fix and found Lea Wait's book, Shadows on the Ivy in a local Orlando bookstore. The cover was interesting and the book blurb urged me to purchase it. I wasn't disappointed.

Antique print dealer Maggie Summer is a recent widow who is a faculty advisor and teaches at the local community college. She is also the proprietor of Shadows, an antique print business.

Maggie is the faculty advisor to the single parent students who are housed in a special dormitory and are involved in a new parents program at Somerset College. When a Whitcomb House student is poisoned and another is found dead, there seems to be a direct correlation between some people's past and the present. Maggie is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery before others are hurt or perhaps lose their lives. And in digging into the mystery, her life might be in jeopardy.

After reading many other gritty and dark mysteries, I so enjoyed this cozy amateur sleuth novel. The characters are interesting, the story was intriguing and satisfactory ending left the promise of more visits with Maggie Summer and her antique print business.

Armchair Interviews says: If you want a nice, fast read, Lea Wait's Shadows on the Ivy is a good pick. We're looking into her other releases and expecting the same level of satisfaction.

2 out of 5 stars A Cozy gone astray.......2005-08-30

I've enjoyed the earlier books in this series because I prefer escaping into the world of traditional cozy mysteries and that's what they were.
This one doesn't fit the genre. There are very young children characters put in jeopardy. (A cozy no-no). A four year old girl's mother is poisoned and she's left in the care of a group of young single parents. (Would this happen in real life? Probably not without the supervision of a Social Service). This same little kid is traumatized when she finds the body of her mother's friend. The setting is the college where the protagonist teaches rather than the usual antique show. There are few characters so not much of a mystery. We know early on that it's one of a only a few disagreeable suspects.
Maggie has no Watson. The fun of cozies is meeting again the likeable characters from earlier books. No Will Brewster, no Gussie to help within this story. Maggie withholds evidence from the police, out of character for the Maggie of the earlier books. The motive of the murder was to hide the kinky bondage sex of a wealthy college supporter who will live to endulge his proclivities another day. The only character I liked was Winslow Homer, Maggie's cat and also the only element in this book of a true cozy.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting & fun mystery with plenty of atmosphere!.......2005-04-28

The best so far in the Shadeows Antique Print Mystery series. Maggie Summer is an antique print dealer & college prof whose life revolves around antiques, her friend Will -- and her desire to become a mother. Single parents, adoption, college politics and suspense all merge to create a great read! If you like traditional mysteries, you'll love Shadows on the Ivy!

5 out of 5 stars An olympic effort.......2004-03-31

Tom Holt's `Olympiad' is a fascinating satire that jabs its humorous finger into the ribs of ancient Greece and gives legendary occurrences a sense of wry life that makes it all the more readable. Sharp and witty, Holt's foray into the world of the historical novel leaves the reader wanting more. His prose style and grasp of his subject matter is fused into a perfect mix of historical fact and literary fiction to create a novel that is truly impressive.
Olympiad, in true Platonic style, takes the form of a conversation between a visiting Phoenician trader and a group of old men in the Greek town of Elis. The story is primarily narrated between blind Cleander and digitless Cratus, two brothers who know the true story behind the founding of the ancient Olympic Games (or Elean Games as they were auspiciously known on their inauguration) and in a length narration give both the versions of events.
The story commences with an ill-fated war against the Triphylians which turns out badly for the perfect King Leon and the brothers' family. As a result of the funeral Games, Cleander suggests to the King that he hold a Games to celebrate no deaths and call the greatest Games players in all Greece to attend. Leon agrees to this splendid idea and promptly packs Cleander, Cratus and three others - their uncle Sarpedon, who has a penchant for violence, Dusa, their overly confident sixteen year old sister, and Tachys, the only man who'll agree to the insanity - off as heralds to announce the Games. What doesn't help is that King Leon's other son, Prince Oeleus, in an attempt to prevent the Games being held and his older brother benefiting from them, is desperate to prevent the games so he sends Alastor to go to all the towns ahead of the fellowship and prevent them from being welcomed.
The first part of the journey has mixed results: our group get in a fight, discover Tegea has become prosperous, discover Pylos has been razed, have a pointless but nice time with the Spartans etc. Eventually, they rescue Pentheus of Aegina, who just happens to come from a family of Gamesplayers who excel (Dusa also manages to fall in love) who narrates his own story of the funeral games held for Phorbus and their family's Games contest against the visiting Corinthian Laops family. During the chariot race a crash killed both their sister Actis and one of the Corinthians and led to a fight and subsequent blood feud.
After taking Pentheus along with them they wind up in Argos where the Argives have actually commenced their own Games. After watching the displays and determining to ask them back to Elis, they're promptly forced to run for it after Alastor and Tachys (who has now joined him) falsely accuse Pentheus of sacrilege.
After sailing the wrong way and ending up in Megara, a dosage of flour secures Pentheus a chariot army with which to regain his Aegina island kingdom. Pure chance ends up with one dead Pentheus and one Sarpedon taking over a King of Aegina. This provides the perfect excuse to hold some funeral Games and lure the best from Athens, to then ostensibly recruit for the Elean Games - though in a moment of pure hilarious farce they have a massive pyre but forget the body.
After managing to make it back to Elis (Cleander being cuckolded in the meantime) they finally create their Games stadium and no one arrives until they conscript a pirate ship for a great footrace that, ultimately, achieves its objective.
Holt's characters play off each other perfectly, bickering just like any family, but also showing great flashes of intuition and always able to help each other out. The philosophical debates on how one can truly record history and how people achieve greatness that regularly appear as the aging Cleander and Cratus pause in their story to the Phoenician drive home a valuable exercise in logical thinking and perception. For this reader, I cannot praise Holt's novels highly enough and I only wish I had discovered this marvellous author a lot sooner.
        A must read.

4 out of 5 stars The Elis Olympics.......2002-12-29

Although marginally hystorical, this book is highly entertaining. The travels and travails of the brothers from Elis are hilarious and serve as a great reminder; the events from the past happened to folks, plain ordinary types, with no idea or plan for momentous events.

        Book Description

The Taylor'ss revolutionary approach to diagnosing women'ss illnesses will forever change the healthcare of women all over the world. Previous books about women and hormonal problems have made sweeping generalizations concerning treatment (i.e. women should not take estrogen, all women need estrogen to prevent osteoporosis and heart disease or all women need progesterone, or herbs). Unlike other books written on the subject, this book advocates the use of objective and accurate testing through salivary testing before prescribing treatment. This book provides much needed information that allows patients and doctors to understand the value of saliva testing. Salivary testing is a must for every woman concerned about breast cancer, osteoporosis, infertility, menopause, fibroids, and PMS. Salivary testing allows women to take control of their health! As a consultant pharmacist, specializing in women's health issues, I found Drs. Taylor's book one of the best, comprehensive, while easily understandable books that I have recently reviewed. I am dismayed to see this book listed currently as "unavailable" through Amazon, as I am now averaging 6 recommendations of this title to my patients daily. Amazon, you best order more copies!!!!

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing. You have immensely added to the quality of my life by helping to improve my health. You are tactful, understanding, and patient. Now it all makes sense. I've been in the healtcare field since 1984 and have had many doctors but none like you. Integrative medicine is the way to go! Your admonitions really work!!

4 out of 5 stars Resourceful Guide to Understanding Hormones.......2001-09-18

Dr. Eldred Taylor has been my doctor for years. And after going through various female changes--I'm now over 40, he recommended that I read this book. I must say that after reading this book, I have a much better understanding of the world of hormones and how they truly affect my life. This book helped me to understand how exercise, diet, and hormones relate to feeling and being healthy. I keep this book handy as a resource guide to refer to it whenever I feel out of balance! I love the highlights or take-home points throughout the chapter.

        4 out of 5 stars Hormonal Help.......2001-09-04

Finally, a doctor who understands that women DON'T always understand how their bodies work. As a home health R.N., I can attest to that fact....and women need to pay attention to what they are putting into their bodies and why. This book is a wonderful "primer" or way for a woman to start on a road to better health. Nothing can be more frustrating that being a woman who knows "something just isn't right with me" and having a doctor prescribe synthetic drugs...only to find out you are worse off than before you started the drugs. Here is an answer to that maze for a woman who is truly interested in actually reclaiming her health and understanding how her body works. Saliva testing should be the route of choice for testing a woman's hormones...this book guides a woman through the process of why blood testing for your hormonal status is NOT accurate and why saliva testing IS! Women...get smart....know your bodies and how it works. Let this book be your guide to renewed health.

4 out of 5 stars Learning Why I Feel The Way I Do.......2001-01-03

This book took me beyond the answer to its question, with information on how to make a difference in my health. With its clinical approach, I felt I was no longer just the patient, but a person empowered with understanding of the chemical makeup of my body. Thankfully, no food plans or diet recipes are included in this book, only information on how to correct a hormonal imbalance that has been plaguing me for fourteen years. Learning is more than half the battle when I can easily implement changes in my lifestyle!

Out of all of the books I have seen in the "home remedy" category, this is one of the few that actually gives you recipes and examples of how to use the various foods and herbs to help treat different ailments. I originally ran across this book in a bargain bin at a discount store when shopping with my mother. She wound up with it and I with another book. After reading through it one day I found it was well worth the $4 she spent and decide I had to have a copy. Amazon Ho!! The layout is easy to read and wonderful to quickly find a tasty home remedy for a wide variety of aliments. Good Job Anne Egan!

5 out of 5 stars The only cookbook you may ever need!.......2002-12-20

This is such a fabulous cookbook that it is one of the few I have left in my kitchen. I am a women's health care nurse practitioner and am very interested in the way nutrition and diet affects health. This book is right-on by recommending a varied diet, rich in whole grains, vegetables, fish, etc. It doesn't limit any type of food and includes meat dishes and desserts. My favorite is the soup section, full of easy-to-make and delicious comfort foods (the pasta e fagiole soup is excellent). I am a fan of Dr. Andrew Weil's books and this cookbook is an excellent accompaniment to his diet and lifestyle advice (better than the cookbook he co-authored this year). The authors also include up-to-date information on the importance of eating omega-3 fatty acids, which many books leave out even though it is so important (for more on this read the excellent "The Omega Diet" by Dr. Artemis Simopoulos). This book does not advise skimping on fat either...it just emphasizes eating healthy fats. This book deserves a spot in everyone's kitchen!

        5 out of 5 stars Beyond Expectations.......2007-09-29

What is the size of the 'door' through which our beliefs enter? Is it large or small, open or closed? As I read this book, I felt: here is the truth. These animals have hearts and minds and spirits. Each is an individual being, just as real as you or me. Scientific research often focuses on animals' ability to understand and respond to humans, instead of what they feel and experience in their own lives and with others of their kind. Science is not necessarily off course, just narrow. Intuitive animal communication is less limited because it is not just looking for what we might expect to find.

Penelope Smith (PS) discusses how we have habitually invalidated ourselves and each other as we receive and share communication with animals, and how much we all miss by doing this. I believe that we communicate all the time, but we usually don't think it works! This book is a big step in looking beyond all that, in her experience and for others.

This book covers all kinds of communication, with animals, plants, nature itself, spirit contacts, and more. I didn't keep up with some of the 'farther out' sections of the book, but they are there for those who want to explore more. The life and death stories were very interesting. Especially in the story of the rabbit family's deaths I had such a feeling of the naturalness of death, not struggle, but 'going from one room to the next'. The story of the life and death of her Afghan friend Pasha is certainly the most moving. PS shows death is to be respected, rather than hated or denied.

How hard it is to read her words of anguish, but how present she is to each nuance of caring and respect for Pasha's dying. I too have been present for the lengthy dying time of an animal friend, compounded by the rural lack of access to vet care and bad roads, asking myself, "What is best, what is right? What does my beloved companion want, and how can I help?" It is very challenging to experience that at length, as she describes with Pasha. Yet in the moment, all we really can do is to be present. Sometimes there just is no rescue, and death must be faced, by the one who is dying, and by those who love them.

I chose one communication from a song sparrow, to convey the overall feeling of this book:

"Life is good. Death is necessary. Renewal is constant. Spirit is ever present. . . . The Spirit in all moves us in different ways to experience infinite creation. Figuring out why is not our way. We know deep in our cores. Life is its own reason. There is no more to understand."

5 out of 5 stars One of my absolute favorite books of all time!.......2006-10-06

I have dozens and dozens of books in the fields of Spirituality, New Age and Eastern Religion, and this book is one of the most inspiring, deeply moving, and life changing in my collection. I have read things in this book that I have not found anywhere else. Penelope's experiences of animal communication rings true to my heart. Her abilities and experiences have had a profound impact on my world view and have inspired me greatly. Reality is far vaster and far more magical than we have been taught to believe. While others may find this possibility threatening, I find it liberating and a way of connecting with my soul's truth.

        1 out of 5 stars How Sad.......2002-11-28

If you think you can learn anything valuable from a person who believes they were once a Yetti (Big Foot) in a previous life, who communicates with faeires, and can control the elements, then spend your money. You won't be disappointed. This woman is totally off her rocker. She believes she communicated with a horse with an evil spirit, the spirit left the horse after she spoke with it, and then caused planetary changes and the demise of Communism. HUH? The woman is totally out of touch with nature, her spiritual side, and most importantly herself. Go back to the basics Penelope. Learn to love the animals again for who they are. Do not impose on them your own distorted beliefs.

        5 out of 5 stars very entertaining.......2002-03-22

What a hoot! This book is fabulous and very entertaining, well worth the money. I found it in a bookstore and could not put it down. It will provide you with plenty of hilarious anecdotes and ridiculous stories to amuse your friends. Anyone who does not like this book probably was taking it too seriously, or didn't fully realize what they would get from a book on "interspecies telepathic communication." High ratings for imagination and camp value, new age to the hilt, and absolutely, completely, totally out there. And, yes, as a previous reviewer alluded to, she has her own way of relating to and caring for animals - definitely not the way I would treat an animal in my care. I give it a 5 star rating over all.

5 out of 5 stars For those with open hearts.......2001-02-15

This is an excellent book for readers who already accept telepathic animal communication as reality. As the subtitle states, this is ADVANCED Interspecies Communication. Begin with wonderful books such as Patty Summers' Talking With the Animals and Arthur Meyers' Communicating With Animals and practice with your animal companions before tackling the concepts presented here. As I continue to learn and improve my own telepathic connection, I reread sections of When Animals Speak and more and more of Penelope's statements that seemed beyond belief are now fitting like puzzle pieces into my newly-expanded worldview. I especially appreciate Penelope's candor as she describes being torn between providing the safe environment she'd like for her animals or granting them the autonomy for which they long. And I'm grateful for the wise words and lessons from the animal teachers which Penelope shares with the rest of us.

            Book Description

Americans love flowers. We grow them with a passion and crave helpful advice on nurturing them in our gardens. A great, friendly, indispensable book, THE FLOWER GARDENER'S BIBLE is written with wit and authority by Lewis and Nancy Hill, who share both their joy in growing flowers and more than 75 years of combined experience.

This new primer is both painstakingly thorough and stunningly photographed. It covers every facet of growing perennials, annuals, bulbs, wildflowers, small trees, vines, and shrubs for season-long color and beauty. It is organized in three sections, and the first focuses on the basics - choosing the right varieties for your zone and type of garden, and planning and planting for maximum impact. The second section presents plans for 25 distinctively themed gardens. And finally, a photographic encyclopedia of more than 400 species includes detailed descriptions of each plant - garden uses, susceptibility to pests and diseases, propagation methods, and more. THE FLOWER GARDENER'S BIBLE is illustrated throughout with more than 500 full-color photographs that are joyously informal, and charming in their simplicity. Dozens of charts group plants by bloom time, height, color, affinity to shade, specific soil and sun needs, appeal to birds and butterflies, and more. THE FLOWER GARDENER'S BIBLE takes every reader - at any level of interest and expertise - and offers the one thing guaranteed to increase his or her pleasure in flower gardening - knowledge.

            5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book.......2005-11-18

I would highly recommend this book for the beginner through advanced. Alot of information to reference back to.

The only thing I found in Rodales Perennials for Every Purpose that I like better- is the book is setup "Plants for every season". It has the contents list in order of blooming time. ie.. Early Spring, late spring early summer, etc

Gardeners Bible- has alot of great pics, deals alot with bulbs, cuttings, transplanting. saving seeds, planting- more so than Rodales Perennials.

Conclusion: It would be tough to decide which one I like better, I think I will have to keep them both.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading at best and in dire need of a new titled.......2007-08-23

This should be titled, How to Make Money Producing Free Junk Magazines. Most of the folks I know in the publishing industry would love to see a down to basics intro to publishing, ie, the printing lingo, developing relationships with authors, editing tips, detailed layout advice, etc. This book is about producing, not publishing. Moving units of advertising, not creating something worthwhile to read or engage the public. This is a get-rich-quick book that belongs in the business section and has not place near publishing/literature reference.

              3 out of 5 stars Good, but...........2007-03-20

This book has a lot of great information in it and will be useful for anyone who wants to start publishing.

HOWEVER, this book is by far the most poorly edited book I have ever read. Punctuation mistakes ABOUND and it is obvious that standards were not very high for publication of this book.

Buy it for the education and look at it as what NOT to do when publishing a book or magazine.

5 out of 5 stars Tons of Great Information.......2007-03-09

This is a great asset if you are thinking about publishing your own magazine. There is a wealth of information for the publishing novice. A little advice - buy this book some time before you plan to publish your magazine so that you can digest the information.

5 out of 5 stars Covers circulation, readership, proposal writing, optional publication formats, niche markets and more........2006-10-07

If you're thinking of starting a home-based publishing business, you can't be without Publish Your Own Magazine, Guidebook or Weekly Newspaper: it tells how to not just publish a winning title, but how to make it profitable - with no money up front. All kinds of successful periodicals and what made them tops are reviewed in a title which covers circulation, readership, proposal writing, optional publication formats, niche markets and more.

4 out of 5 stars Bang for your Buck.......2006-03-02

Of the many books that I have purchased on self-publishing, this is one of the better ones. Even though I myself was mostly interested in book publishing rather than mangazines or guidebooks, this book still served me well. It gave a lot of useful tips and pointers as well as information I never thought about. I checked the book out of the library initially, but I want my own copy.

This book gives you step by step details on how to enter the publishing field on a tight budget. It gives you an abundance of resources. Some of those include:

              * Starting out with little cash (and how he did it)
              * Trade secrets necessary to pick winning publications
              * How to hire the people you need (at a price you can afford)
              * How to save money on printing
              * Reproducible Business Forms

This is a great book to include in your self-publishing library. It does cover alot of areas, but I don't usually complain when someone gives me more bang for my buck.

                      Book Description

Spanning approximately forty years, these memoirs are tied together with the thematic thread of a writer-to-be coming of age. They chronicle his discoveries of nature, family, love, community and self. For several years he becomes immersed in music as a member of an R&B and jazz band. During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement he narrowly escapes, but has a close look at death by the hands of law enforcement officers in of all places, a college campus. He drops out of college, fights off drug abuse and winds up in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After regaining his equilibrium, he continues his higher education, and realizes some measure of personal success. During this time he is recruited by the CIA. The final piece, "Rewind," reveals a mature, stable, self-aware man who knows who he is and where he fits into the world as he now sees it-a still-racist world that is reluctant to embrace him, but one in which he is determined and prepared to realize his long-recurring dream of being a writer. Engaging and articulate, these memoirs go beyond being one person's life excerpts, to reflecting American history and culture, and human search for self.

                      4 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2001-04-07

I really liked little Eddy Brown from the very first pages of his book. I bet he was a joy to his mother. This book shares with the reader a glimpse of what is going on inside the head of a youngster, as he tries to make sense of the world around him, and then it chronicles through parts of his life as he grows, struggles, and matures. The victory contained within the pages of his book is that he did survive, and the rest of us are better for it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and wonderfully engaging---Living to Tell.......2001-03-30

Living to Tell: Collected Memoirs by Eddy Douglas Brown is an engaging
account of the life of a maturing manchild whose experiences proved to
be a journey filled with uncertainties and confusion. This is a
brilliantly written memoir that embraces the reader in a most
mysterious way. I yearned to follow the author from page to page as a
curious observer. This journey is sometimes humorous and sometimes
seriously thought provoking as the author makes choices that are
suspect to his upbringing. The struggle for the author is to make
sense of senseless circumstances as the journey takes the manchild
into manhood. I enjoyed reading and rereading this book. The author
is a wonderfully inspiring writer. This is a "must read"
memoir. I suggest this book as a gift to anyone that reads for
                      complete pleasure.

                      5 out of 5 stars One Man's Journey.......2001-03-30

I will readily admit that I am as curious as the next fellow when given the opportunity of a glimpse into someone else's very private world; with ease and graciousness, this author accomplishes that, drawing you into memories of life's private moments that are at times endearing, laugh-out-loud-funny, and sadly tragic. Reading this autobiography made me feel as though I was spending time with a dear friend, engrossed in his stories. At the end of each chapter, I rushed toward the next, wanting to know more about this boy who became a man, his experiences and those that shared the journey with him. Hopefully, this is just the "tip of the iceberg" of works to be produced by this author--if you're like me, this one will move you, touch you in many ways, and leave you wanting for more.
