Constantine was born in D.C., and has been traveling the world ever since-finding everything but a home. Randolph has stayed in this city every day, selling shoes in a downtown store, taking care of ladies who lie about their sizes and sometimes fit him into their beds. Now these two strangers, one white, one black, have come together in a criminal's audacious plan. With five partners and the hit ready to go down, Constantine doesn't understand the treacheries, feuds and fantasies swirling around him-and he's fallen for a woman who only doubles his risk. But Randolph, a self-confessed "shoedog," can smell trouble a mile away. And when the shooting starts, he'll give Constantine a chance to liveor die where he was born

An oldie but not a goodie.......2007-06-08
I like this author's books. They are well written and easy to read, and the characters are interesting and lifelike. Therefore, despite the fact that his books are not suspensful or thrilling, I continue to read them. They are more crime drama books.
I discovered Pelecanos a month or two ago and am steadily going through his books. But Shoedog I did not like. I found all the characters uninteresting and the minor characters had no life. To use a book review cliche, I didn't care if they lived or died. After going through more than half the book, I found that I didn't care whether the robbery was going to succeed or not or who was going to live, so I simply stopped reading the book.
Now after reading the reviews, I find it's a repackaged oldie, I'm not surprised. My advice for readers, skip this book and check out his other ones.
A great stand-alone Pelecanos heist novel.......2006-07-11
This was a fun book. The plot involves a drifter named Constantine who essentially randomly finds himself caught up in a scheme to rob two liquor stores nearly simultaneously. Constantine's fellow ne'er-do-wells are engaging written and the pace of the novel is action-packed. Shoedog doesn't involve any of Pelecanos' other signature characters (Nick Stefanos, Derek Strange, etc.) in a significant way. It is, however, set in Washington, DC, as are the rest of his books.
This was one Pelecanos' first novels, but his writing is still as polished as ever. I actually ended up reading this book after I had read all of his other, better known books and found myself enjoying it more than some of his latest. One very minor quibble: the title is a bit of a misnomer, because the "shoedog" character is not actually the most developed -- the "Shoedog" character plays a decidely second fiddle to Constantine, the protagonist.
The book ends with one of Pelecanos' traditional big finale shootouts, but is still entertaining for all that. I would highly recommend this book to any of Pelecanos' current fans, as well as anyone interested in reading a fun, engaging book about a heist that goes wrong (don't they all?).
Outstanding Drama.......2005-08-23
Few crime novelists can hook you like George Pelecanos. His 1994 stand-alone "Shoedog" was out-of-print until last fall in paperback....great news!
There are no good guys in this tale of violence, extreme betrayal and social realism. Every character is morally questionable. Like great film-noir, the cast is either anti-hero or villain.
After drifting worldwide for seventeen years, Constantine decides to hitchhike back to DC. He accepts a ride from an older hood called Polk (everyone in "Shoedog" goes by one name).
Outside DC, Polk needs to make a stop to "collect some dough."
That stop sets a dreadfully dark caper in motion for Constantine.
A dual liquor robbery in DC on payday...two inside men on both jobs and a driver. Well cased and set up...it looks okay...and no one has a chance to say no.
In the great noir tradition a woman upsets loyalties and outsiders are after Polk.
The dénouement is stunning and will resound in your mind for an extensive period.
Packed with remarkable dialogue, suspense, treachery, fanatical duplicity and filled with superb pop culture references, "Shoedog" is best read in black and white.
Yeah so?.......2005-04-06
I fell in love with Pelecanos when I picked up "Down By The River Where The Dead Men Go". I loved all of his books that featured Nick Stefanos and Alex Karras. Ever since those intertwined stores ended I have been less enthralled. These recent stories are very readable but repetitive to me. None of the characters are very likable or even very interesting. Read the old stuff, fall in love with Pelecanos and then pick up his most recent stuff. It will be like watching the quality dip on Moonlighting -- you keep praying it will hit it's original glory.
Another hit........2005-01-13
Pelecanos does it again in SHOEDOG. He hits on all counts, the writing is superb, and the characters, as always, are deep and interesting. I couldn't get enough of this book. This is one that I was sad to come to the end.

Book Description
In a kingdom where peace has lasted decades, trouble is brewing. A cult in the Kingdom of Tides has awoken an ancient magic held confined in a crystal staff. With it, they control their king and plot to use his army, The Steel Tide, to rid the world of all half-breeds. The seven kingdoms become unwitting pawns in the church's vile plan.
This is a tale of kings, knights, assassins and lords who come together in times of great tragedy and bad omens. Amid the plots and betrayals of this twisted tale, hangs the fate of all the kingdoms. The song of steel plays for the dance of knives to win the veil of victory.
Customer Reviews:
A light and fun read!.......2006-05-05
I don't read much fantasy because I think it is just over done. This one was very honest about what it is. No changing the name of elves to "Elations" and hoping that I wouldn't notice. I found that refreshing. I think more writers should stop trying to think up new names for old races and just write a sound story.
Not a bad start over all........2006-04-18
Though the races are over used in fantasy, I still found this book quite good. It is a quick read with a nice pace. The only two things that bothered me were the cliff hangers at the ends of some chapters and then having to read through so many characters to find out what happened. I prefer to read from one characters point of view, but other than that I am pleased with the story.
A book full of fantasy cliches.......2006-04-15
This book left me distinctly unimpressed and with no interest in reading more of this series. The characters are flat, it's hard to feel a real lot of empathy for them - and most of them seem rooted in fantasy cliches of Brownies, Elves and nasty humans.
This book reads like it was written for young teenagers and not adults, so be warned.
embarassing.......2006-02-03
I have never been so embarassed to read fantasy. No other book has made me feel more like it was written by a pack of 11 year old boys playing dungeons and dragons. The book feels so amateurish and unoriginal. It's main characters are brownies, orcs, elfs, sprites and other queer, used, tired and boring characters. I shy away from fantasy but drift back from time to time and find a gem (such as George RR Martin and Scott Bakker, or Gene Wolfe) but these kind of books is why fantasy has such a bad rap. Then I read the other reviews and see that people felt that the characters were deep and had trouble discerning the good from the bad and I am blown away. Is this the first book they ever read? The characters are so transparent, it seemed like the author began writing this as a fairy tale for his daughters, whom, not coincindentally, and highly annoyingly, are central characters here and they are the worst written characters in any book EVER! They are soooo good, soo tough, just damn perfect and without flaw which equals without substance. This is just pitiful, really. Mr. Logan, please find another career.
A very nice surprise........2005-02-10
I got this book with "The Charnel Prince" by Greg Keys. I wasn't sure if I wanted to risk the extra bucks on a writer I'd never read, but this book was a surprise. It was as good as "The Charnel Prince". Amazon made a nice match with these two books. I will be looking forward to the second book.
Book Description
Originally published in 1997, The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book was one of the first of its kind in the health market. In this new and expanded edition, Dr. Shari Lieberman and Nancy Bruning describe how anyone can design a personalized core supplement program of essential vitamins and minerals.
While implementing the latest research, the authors expertly cut through the confusing fads and hype surrounding exotic (and less essential) nutrients to help people decide which vitamins and minerals are necessary in their diets, and the appropriate dosage. Lieberman and Bruning show how the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients can strengthen the immune system, fight illness, slow aging, and maximize health. Included in the book are sample worksheets and supplement checklists to assist readers in incorporating these important, healthful supplements into their busy lifestyles.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2007-01-18
I am extremely pleased with all this book has to offer. It's very informative and has research to back it up. A very good buy.
Not what I thought it was going to be.......2007-01-10
It was very hard to read I'm not a Doctor and I guess I thought it was going to just tell me what I should be taking, but if I follow all of this info i would be on so many vitamins i wouldn't have to eat Breakfast I would just eat a hand full of vitamins.
I do look up info and it does give me some answers I can put into use I just wished they would have written it for someone who is not up on her vitamins and minerals
Great information..........2006-10-13
This book has great information about all types of minerals and vitamins. I had a hard time putting the book down. I learned so much more about the minerals and vitamins and what doses you should be using. Now I know how much my body needs of certain vitamins.
Careful - this book isn't as neutral as the author claims it to be.......2006-08-16
If you read this book you will be given lots of evidence and independent studies on the various benefits of vitamins and minerals. But while this book claims to be neutral and balanced on the good and bad of each vitamin, the author does leave out a variety of studies that have cast doubt on the benefits of "mega-doses" of various vitamins and minerals.
For instance various recent studies on Vitamin E supplementation have shown no or negative correlation to heart disease. Several studies have even shown an increased mortality rate for people taking high doess of antioxidents (which are thought to do the opposite). A recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlighted some of these growing concerns (search on "the case against vitamins" for that article or "dangers of vitamins" for a variety of articles.)
I'm not an expert, in fact one of the reasons I bought this book was because I am confused on what to take and not to take and this seemed to be an impartial book. All I would suggest is that this book very much recommends taking vitamins at doses much higher than the recommended daily allowances (RDI), and before you take this book as the latest and best info and start a regiment of 15 pills a day, make sure you really do talk to your doctor or at least look at the contradictary studies now available online.
Looking for a great book with gobs of information?.......2006-03-16
Looking for a great book with gobs of information? Look no further! This book explains what each supplement is used for and the doses to take for specific diseases or just for optimal health. Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it lists information about adverse results if too much of a supplement is taken. I refer to this book time and time again.

Shari Lieberman and Nancy Bruning are right on the topic of paramount concern to humanity; and that is, the best nutrition. Customer Reviews:
This book is terrible!.......2005-10-19
This book should be called "Simple Thai & Chinese Cooking" because all the recipes are thai or chinese. I didn't find any authentic laotion recipes. Examples of recipes they have: Fried Wonton, Skewed Chicken, Bok Choy and Tofu Soup, Vegetable Fried Rice, ORANGE PORK!!! No special recipes whatsoever. The only laotion recipies I saw were for Lob.
Perfect Instructions For A Single Person Who does Not Cook!.......2004-07-20
I have never been the "budding" Martha Stewart, nor Emeril; but with this book I feel that I might be able to give them a good run for their money! Very simple and delicious receipes, precise and easy step-by-step narration all through the book. Definitely a "must" for everyone who enjoys Far Eastern cuisine.
Uses ingredients readily accessible in American markets.......2003-11-14
There are very few Laotion cookbooks on the market, making Penn Hongthong's Simple Laotian Cooking a welcome addition. Almost two hundred recipes offer traditional dishes which surprisingly use ingredients readily accessible in American markets, so cooks will have no problem preparing Pork with Cauliflower or Green Curry Beef.

More How Your Horse Wants You to Ride: Advanced Basics, The Fun Begins (Howell Equestrian Library).......2007-05-22
A really great and useful book !
Not just for graduates!.......2007-03-26
I bought this book thinking I would want it later, after my riding had improved through the program in _How Your Horse Wants You to Ride_. It sat around unread for a long time because I thought I wasn't ready for the advanced material yet. Then I peeked inside and found out that MORE doesn't just pick up where the first book left off. MORE starts at the beginning and adds to the material in the first book, at every level. There is material in there that is way too advanced for me but there is also a whole lot that isn't. There is some review, some overlap of what's in the first book, in addition to the new material. Take a peek, you'll find that MORE begins with the Seven Steps, progresses to working with the horse on the ground, and so on. So don't wait to read MORE. It will give you more, no matter where you are on your journey.
Another great book for the horse and rider........2007-03-15
In her third book, this companion to "How Your Horse Wants You To Ride", Gincy gives us another collection of her deep insights into horse behavior, comfort and motivation. Every nuance of equine behavior is covered. Every situation that will arise is here with solutions in easily understood text and excellent photo illustrations.
This, and the earlier book, form a complete manual for riders from their early beginnings, through to mastery and enjoyment of riding. In fact, through building confidence and understanding from the start, it assures that both the horse and rider will enjoy their times together. It is all done with warmth, kindlness and complete understanding of the rider's point of view as well as that of the horse. These books offer lots of support and knowledge for anyone working with and enjoying horses.
For the instructor "More HYHWYTR" with its companion book, provides a wonderful basis for planning lessons and dealing with every day to day situation that arises with riding students and their mounts.
As in her earlier books, Gincy focuses on building the rider's confidence as well as her skill.
Gincy's decades of experience teaching, training, riding and loving horses comes clearly through to us in her enjoyable and helpful books.
More HYHWYTR is a 'must have' for everyone who rides, from pre-beginner to confident expert..
Perfect Addition to Book Series.......2006-07-25
This IS the perfect addition to the Author,Gincy Bucklins', previous two books. With her years of knowledge she has the ability to simplify and pass on to others the most affective way to accomplish our goals with our Horses. She also has a great concern for the horses comfort as she attempts to allow us to learn or relearn the correct way to ride in balance and safety. All of her books recap The Seven Steps which has proven to be an invaluable asset for both rider and horse.I cannot praise or thank Ms Bucklin enough for the three books she has written and the help she has given to so many ....MORE, GINCY, MORE!
The basics continued.......2006-04-23
Although the "editorial" review assesses this book for intermediate and advanced riders, it is a bit misleading. Gincy continues with more of the basics that we all need to become solid riders. And I do mean the basics.
Gincy points out that even advanced riders may know they are doing something wrong, but may not know how to correct their mistake. She then gives very detailed and yet simple ways to start out doing the right thing so you may never need to correct yourself. For those of us who started before her series of books, she has made available in clear, simple steps what to do to adjust and correct our position and techniques.
I love her "Tidbits and Supplements" which are little asides that point out odds and ends of knowledge about riding, tack, horses, and horse people that you might learn if you spent years hanging around barns and horses, but you also might have missed. The photographs and diagrams in the book are really helpful and appear at just the right moments.
In this book she is also very specific about what to do to ride with more confidence. Her Seven Steps plus Grounding are spelled out here and discussed once again. Everything about how she asks the rider to approach riding the horse creates confidence in riding.
This, like her other books, should be a riding textbook for beginner riders and a bedside companion for intermediate and advanced riders. She writes in a way that makes the art of riding feel very simple and yet handles all the specifics that will take you to whatever level of riding you want to learn. It is a terrific addition to the riding literature, and fit for both riders and their instructors who want to be sure their students learn clear and useful basics.

new stuffed animals.......2005-10-11
I am really sorry to say, but this book was a disappointment to me. Lots of pictures, but all small, odd-coloured (orange, reddish), straight from some old selling cataloques. The teddies were a minority compared to the other stuffed animals. Furthermore, there were not many pictures of the old Hermann teddies, the vast majority of the teddies were quite new or newer. I found the information part -values etc - rather strange and difficult to use.

Why do hummingbirds fly toward the color red? What's the role of water in attracting these revelatory creatures across the garden's boundary? The book opens with a chapter called "The Basics," which explains where and when hummingbirds and butterflies tend to emerge and their migration patterns, climate preferences, and life cycles. Later chapters include "Tempting Butterflies with Treats" and "Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden Designs." It concludes with a series of clear drawings of various species and their identifying characteristics, favored plants, range, and habitat. Writer Sally Roth is a natural guide to this flying world, and although her text contains reams of information, it never seems complicated or overwhelming. Book Description
In her newest book for Rodale, the irrepressible Sally Roth zeroes in on one of North America's best-loved backyard birds-the hummingbird-and on the beautiful, delicate insects that are all the rage among nature enthusiasts-butterflies.
Becoming a dual hummingbird/butterfly watcher couldn't be more natural for backyard gardeners and nature lovers because both of these types of winged creatures are attracted to beautiful nectar flowers. Sally Roth is a passionate gardener, and she shares all her best recommendations on the perfect flowers to plant to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. She has even included her original garden designs especially appealing to hummingbirds and butterflies, including an herb garden for butterflies, a red-hot garden for hummingbirds, and a $10 garden for butterflies (you can plant it for less than $10). And, of course, all of Sally's advice is all-organic!
There's lots more you can do to attract and preserve butterflies and hummingbirds besides plant flowers, so Sally shares plenty of great tips and techniques for:
* Using and maintaining nectar feeders
* Setting up hummingbird misters and making butterfly mud puddles
* Attracting a wider range of butterflies by offering special foods other than nectar
* Providing nesting sites and nest materials for hummingbirds
* Understanding and observing butterfly life cycles
* Choosing and using equipment for watching and photographing butterflies and hummingbirds
Attracting Butterflies and Hummingbirds to Your Backyard includes Sally's unique field guide to identifying hummingbirds and butterflies. No stuffy scientific lingo here. Sally's writing is light and entertaining throughout her descriptions of each lovely hummingbird and butterfly, and she tells it as she sees it in describing the sometimes less-than-lovely looks of caterpillars. Sally also lists favorite nectar flowers for each type of butterfly and hummingbird.

Good reference.......2003-09-06
This is a super resource. It has great info on both the host and nectar plants of butterflies, talks to the different needs of hummingbirds and the plants they like, how to set up the garden to be most inviting. There are full chapters on things like "the lure of water", "the shletering garden", garden designs, butterfly & hummingbird behavior, etc. There's a section on hummingbird feeders as well as butterfly feeders (rotting fruit - they love it!) It's a great into to the lives of butterflies and hummingbirds, explaining the cycles they go through and their needs and has really straightforward info/ideas on how to create the habitat that will be right for them. The photographs of the caterpillars, butterflies and hummingbirds (even one feeding young in a nest) are fantastic. It also tells (a little bit) about how caterpillars overwinter. Really one of the best books I've seen on the topic - glad I bought it - its a lot of fun! I highly recommend it for anyone looking to set up a garden to attract these folks or augment an existing garden. Build it and they will definitely come! We've had great succeses!
Delightful!.......2002-07-09
I received this for Christmas and have read it three times since then, referring to it constantly as I build our new hummingbird/butterfly friendly backyard. Sally Roth has changed the way I garden - her relaxed style, her obvious pleasure in her subject, the wonderful photographs, great descriptions of hummingbirds, butterflies and the plants to sustain them, have made organic gardening accessible and understandable. I have always had a no-spray garden, but always felt some distress when things started getting chewed, as will happen. Now I look eagerly for the first signs of 'munching' on the passiflora I just planted, hoping for some fritillary action. Host plants are now mixed in with the nectar flowers - and I can't wait to see a monarch caterpillar on the milkweed! Thanks, Sally! I have hung up the big giant strawberry feeder with pride!
Wonderful!.......2002-06-07
I borrowed this book from our local library, and I read it from cover to cover! Most gardening books are good for browsing, but are too boring to read. I am an avid gardener and bird/butterfly watcher, and I found this book VERY informative, well illustrated and also well written. I've added this book to my wishlist hoping someone will buy it for me! If you're interested in butterflies or hummingbirds, this is the book for you!
A beautiful book - enjoy and be inspired.......2001-09-28
I've read a number of gardening books lately, as I have decided to start gardening. This is one of the best. There are beautiful photographs and illustrations of flowers, butterflies and hummingbirds. The author has an obvious love of the subject. She doesn't make the whole gardening idea into a religion, however. She has a light touch, tells some stories on herself, gives a lot of good advice and makes the whole thing seem like a joy, not a chore.

Book Description
This present work of nine chapters portrays iconoclastic trends within Western Christianity from the early Middle Ages up to the time of the French Revolution. The primary intent of this work is an explanation of the important iconoclastic movements - their origins and their theoretical foundations and motives. Parallel to this, the book deals with the religious and theological justification of the iconographic cult and of the icon in sacred architecture both in the formal theological teachings of schools and universities and in the arena of popular pietism. The areas of concentration are: iconographic controversy in the Carolingian Period, iconoclasm in the context of the Cistercian monastery reform, the icon in Franciscan thought, Reformation iconoclasm, the meaning of the icon in Tridentine Catholicism. Included in this is an in-depth interpretation of the religious iconography of numerous images and image cycles, including the principal works of Tintoretto and El Greco.
