Book Description
On the New York reservation of the Oneida, FBI Special Agent Anna Turnipseed and Bureau of Indian Affairs Investigator Emmett Parker find the broken body of a community elder who seems to have fallen out of the sky--much like the woman in the Oneida creation myth. But it's a land dispute that's taken her life--and threatening to ground Turnipseed and Parker in facts far stranger than fiction.

Good tale set in the world of U.S. government/Indian relations.......2007-07-19
In not a huge fan of "Indian country" mysteries (as another Amazon reviewer described the genre), but I enjoyed "Sky Woman Falling" well enough. You get a somewhat unusual mystery scenario and learn, quite painlessly, about the many issues facing modern American Indian tribes in the United States. Interestingly, you don't just learn about how the U.S. government relates to Indians these days, but how various Indian tribes feel about and relate to each other. And, so you don't feel totally at sea if you're new to this genre, you also get that great old mystery/thriller staple: friction between federal and local law enforcement. Like a thunderstorm during the climactic showdown, that particular staple never gets old.
It isn't Tony Hillerman, but still quite interesting.......2007-03-18
Not bad, I figured it out before the end, not a new or surprising plot. However, the aboriginal American detectives are nicely drawn and interesting and I wouldn't mind reading more mysteries with them as the protagonists.
Excellent series.......2006-09-16
I enjoy this series quite a bit because of the Indian lore--not overdone, but insights into the culture, bits about what is happening with reservations/culture. This particular mystery was outstanding in plot and the method of killing off characters. The suspence factor was also quite good. I'd like to see more character development between the two main characters. There's a bit of a sense of holding off on growing their relationship--and that relationship, along with the emotional growth of the two individually play a big part in why I like these books. Without it, they will become just another mystery so I really hope that future books bring and keep these personality aspects to the forefront.
Another great read.......2006-05-16
If you're a fan of Indian Country whodunits, Kirk Mitchell is tops. I could go on, but I'd just be repeating myself. This is a terrific read.
Amazingly consistent with Iroquois politics/culture.......2004-01-17
Sky Woman Falling ranks with Tony Hillerman's best books in its stunningly accurate portrayal of contemporary Iroquois society. He takes a very complex situation, the gambling crisis which has ripped apart the Iroquois, and written a novel which describes not only the internal tensions but the tragic results stemming from this latest assault upon the Six Nations. His command of Haudenosaunee cosmology, spirituality and symbolism is truly unique for a non-Native novelist. There is nothing patronizing is this book. The principals in Sky Woman Falling are Native investigators as are the culprits. He correctly portrays the Native gambling advocates as complex humans seduced, and then corrupted, by casino gambling. Mitchell obviously used a lot of shoe leather travelling around central New York; his descriptions of the land and people are without parallel. The story takes place among the Oneidas but could have just as easily described events among the Seneca, Onondaga or Mohawk. As a Mohawk writer I applaud this book and strongly urge anyone who has an interest in the Iroquois to read it and pass it along to your friends. It would make a great film.

A deeply intricate and suspenseful mystery.......2006-02-08
Sky Woman Falling is an unabridged audiobook novel about FBI Special Agent Anna Turnipseed, a Modoc Indian from California, and Bureau of Indian Affairs investigator Emmett Parker, a Comanche from Oklahoma, are a federal-sponsored team sent to investigate cases in tribal territory. In Sky Woman Falling, the two of them find a murdered elderly Oneida woman with every bone in her body shattered - much like the Sky Woman of the Oneida creation myth. The victim was in the center of a bitter land dispute, and standard procedure places both of them in deadly jeopardy from the fallout of a race war. Deftly written by Kirk Mitchell (a former deputy sheriff on the Paiute-Shoshone Indian reservations including Death Valley), and very ably narrated by Dick Hill (a "Golden Voice" named by AudioFile magazine), Sky Woman Falling is a deeply intricate and suspenseful mystery. 12 CDs, 13 1/2 hours.

Ugh, this is just painful........2006-06-30
I can look past the fact that Locke, the main character from A Hero Born, is featured prominently on both the front cover art and the description on the back cover when in fact he only shows up at the end of the book. Sure it's disappointing, but as long as the story is good, that's all that matters.
I can also look past the fact that Michael Stackpole, whose novel Talion: Revenant I credit with awakening me to the world of fantasy fiction, is listed as the book's author when in fact it is his pal William Wu who is responsible for most of the story. Again, disappointing, but as long as the story is good, that's all that matters.
I can even look past the fact that one of the book's major characters comes from "our" world, even though this type of plot device almost never works well (Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry being the obvious exception). Besides, as long as the story is good, that's all that matters.
BUT THE STORY IS NOT GOOD!!!
Seriously, I'm supposed to accept this as the sequel to the very enjoyable A Hero Born? Everything about this story screams amateur hour. I'm tempted to launch into a tirade about every flaw I encountered in An Enemy Reborn, but it all comes back to the same thing: the story just isn't good. I hate writing such a negative review of a (sort of) Michael Stackpole novel. I consider him one of the better fantasy fiction authors out there, and he seems like a nice guy too. But this novel is beneath him. Here's hoping it remains out of print.
A Great Book!.......2001-02-24
I read all the reviews on this book, and saw alot saying it was horrible. I don't agree. I got it to read for a book report in English, and ended up reading it twice! *and this is a big step for me, because most books I read have no more than 250 pages in them*. I also hope to buy it, so I can read it as many more times as I can. I do want to read the first one as well. I do wonder about the back of the book, where it talks about Locke, but I don't worry much. I like the whole thing with Len as well. Len, Jhesti, and Fitz are 3 of my fave people, with Lord Disaster being my 4th fave. I reccomend anyone who likes long books to read this. No matter what others miht say, I think it's great!
It's not great but not that bad either.........2000-10-11
This book is definitely not as good as A Hero Born. It's entertaining, but the sense of flow and characterisation that made the first book so good are lacking in this sequel. But that can't totally be blamed on Michael Stackpole. The thing to remember here is that most of this story was written by William Wu and not M.Stackpole. The story concept and characters are Wu's. Stackpole only made modifications to the story so that it could get published, so technically it's not really a Stackpole original piece. But nonetheless, it's still worth a read.
THIS WAS A SEQUAL TO A HERO BORN?.......2000-07-24
THIS BOOK IS A FAIRLY GOOD ONE. HOPEFULLY, YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING TO READ ABOUT THE SAME MAIN CHARACTER. THE MAIN ONE IN THIS ONE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FIRST BOOK. THE ONLY REALLY PITTIFUL PART IS THE VERY END. SO IF YOU LOOSE IT WITH JUST A FEW PAGES LEFT, DO NOT LOOK FOR IT.
a question to Mr Stackpole.......1999-12-27
Although, the concept and the idea of the book are very intriguing; the storyline has a lot of gaps which makes the details somewhat confusing. " ! warning a spoiler a head ! " A question to Mr Stackpole. If Xoayya has a vision where she's is getting married and Len is at this wedding. How is Len going to return to Realms of Chaos to attend that ceremony if he was send to Earth? Plus, why is the description on the back cover talks about Locke and how he "must become the very hero that he seeks" when Locke only enters the storyline ten pages before the end of the book ?

I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK.......2007-08-27
I absolutely love this cookbook. I have many healthy cookbooks on my shelf and this is the best. I have cooked many of the recipes and have loved all but one of them. I have five children and they devour everything that I cook from this book - including my daughter that is such a picky eater I can't believe she can survive on what she eats. I use the cookbook exactly how they say to and it works great for me. I photocopy the shopping list, cross off what I already have, and go shopping. I double the recipes because most of them are for 4 to 6 people and we have 7. Then my husband and daughter can take leftovers to work and school the next day. The recipes are very easy to prepare, the instructions easy to understand, and there are no weird ingredients. I have already bought a copy to send to my diabetic sister and I recomend it to everyone I talk to. Do yourself a favor and get this book!
Recipes are great........2007-06-22
I really liked the idea of a year of recipes, but having tried this out for a week so far, I've found it lacking. Although I loved the idea of a weekly grocery list, this makes skipping recipes impossible, which I have to sometimes because they call for equipment that I don't own (like a BBQ grill) or foods that I can't eat, and the portion sizes vary tremendously. However, all the recipes for the first week I tried were delicious and not too complicated.
Fantastic Recipes!.......2006-11-28
I have been cooking out of this for a few weeks now and EVERY recipe has turned out great! I am very impressed with the easyness of the recipes and the end result each time! I tend to cut the recipes in half since it is just my husband and I. There is a shopping list at the beginning of each week, then each recipe is listed with the prep time, number of servings, the diatary exchange, some nutritional facts, and a few have pictures. I really do love this cookbook!
Excellent Book!.......2006-11-10
Lots of flavor to the receives.Low fat and low calories for a Diabetic.
Weight control with taste!
HEALTHY CALENDAR OF DIABETIC COOKING.......2006-07-28

This is the best Cook Book I've ever seen regarding Appetizers & Desserts. It's a "Must Have" for anyone who enjoys cooking &/or entertaining!!
Book Description
This manual describes both varieties of the Chinese Crested dog. One, called the Hairless, has fur only on his head, feet, and tail. The other, known as the Powder Puff, has a long, soft coat. Both varieties share the same playful temperament. This book is a brand-new title in Barron's extensive line of Complete Pet Owner's Manuals. They advise current and soon-to-be pet owners on the care of dogs and cats of virtually all recognized breeds, as well as on birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, small mammals, and even exotic creatures like tarantulas and sugar gliders. The information in each book is authoritative but the language is non-technical and easy for every pet owner to understand. Every title in this series is individually written from first page to last by a breeder, trainer, veterinarian, or other animal specialist. All Complete Pet Owner's Manuals are filled with high-quality color photos and instructive line art.

Book Description
The Quilt presents a comprehensive and stimulating look at the best in contemporary quilting through 84 color plates of quilts selected for the Quilt National 1983, the only national juried show restricted to contemporary work. The state of this lively art form is also captured through comments made by the show's artists and jurors, and by Michael James and Nancy Crow, who acknowledged trailblazers in the field. For anyone interested in quilts old and new, The Quilt is an indispensable "state of the art" record of the attempts by contemporary artists in the United States and abroad to bring quilting into the mainstream of the fine arts as an exciting art form capable of great depth and diversification. The 84 color plates include dazzling and subtle color studies, humorous and thoughtful views of natural phenomena and the human psyche, and strong, expressive works revealing their heritage in favorite traditional patterns.
Book Description
A practical guide to planning and constructing a Japanese garden. Step-by-step instructions explain every facet, from displaying plants and rocks to mastering drainage and lighting, to creating bamboo fences and hedges.
Book Description
Enjoy it for its sheer beauty or use it for inspiration while creating your own small landscape garden.
Japanese gardening is the art of arranging plants, rocks, lanterns, and basins in an open or, as here, an enclosed space. According to the aesthetic principles long prevailing in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, even two rocks arranged in a tiny, enclosed space can be considered a garden. This
type of garden is called a tsuboniwa, and Kyoto has long being considered its birthplace and home. So it is not surprising that photographer Katsuhiko Mizuno, wishing to capture the best of such small gardens, should turn to Kyoto and its palaces, temples, shrines, and town houses.
The highlight of the book is the 100 photographs of these tsuboniwa-snow overlying sand patterns; coloring maple leaves; flowering cherry trees; lanterns, basins, fences; gardens featuring wisteria, azalea, hydrangea, Indian lilac, camellia, and daphne. Each photo is accompanied by an insightful
caption pointing out the outstanding characteristics of the garden in question.
An appendix gives Mizuno's instructions for creating a tsuboniwa, based on his personal experience. His account of the underlying concepts, design, choice of plants, and practical procedures will prove a invaluable reference for all garden creators, from amateur to professional.
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures.......2006-06-29
This book is not only a great picture book, but it also provides wonderful descriptions of the Japanese gardens featured - succinct and informative. If you like landscaping with the Japanese feel, you'll enjoy this book.
faulty product.......2006-02-24
The book is excellent but the dust cover was torn obviously before despatch as the packaging was good.
The disappointment was that there was no method of complaint other than returning the product. From Australia to USA not practible.
Beyond the basics, Japanese Garden Book.......2006-01-19
I've been through a lot of Japanese gardening books, and many of been a little repetitive, covering the basic design elements and what not. Mizuno has put together a great "Intermediate" read once you've had enough of the basics. The pictures are some of the best available of authentic Japanese gardens, and the captions are short and to the point but with just enough plant identifications to be useful to someone in their planning stage.
Perhaps the best feature of this book is the introductory discussion on the "Omoteya style" town home (traditional Japanese merchant class town home). The text suggest there is a conservation movement to this vanishing style of Japanese home that mirrors the affection American's are beginning to culture towards the Bungalow. As the Omoteya styled homes share similar dimensions with the American city lot (diagrams are provided with the text), this book is a fabulous resource to urban dwellers looking to incorporate the Japanese garden concept to their grassy postage stamp.
A book to inspire you.......2003-10-31
Beautiful pictures and good text. It doesn't contain "how to do" tips but there is a chapter on how the author build one tsuboniwa in a Kyoto house.
