Not Bad-Not The Best.......2005-05-06
My wife introduced me to Nagaio Marsh last year and since then I have been soaking up her books. I enjoy the character of Inspector Allyn but this one just did not really have as much mystery as it did adventure. It was not bad but for those new to Marsh they might want to try "Death at the Bar" or "The Nursing Home Murders" which I feel are much better.
Not the usual Roderick Alleyn fare........2005-01-05
This book is not what we usually see when we read a Roderick Alleyn mystery. For one thing, the basic premise behind the book is actually borrowed from an Agatha Christie story. Also, the book is not really a mystery as such. It is more an expose of some criminal activity that occured on the Continent to do with the early drug trade. In it we meet some truly odious characters and Ms. Marsh does a really good job of depicting these nefarious people. We also get a pretty good description of the world of Cults and witchcraft as seen through the eyes of Alleyn and his wife Troy. Ms. Marsh can write a good story, and even if she steps out of her comfort zone, she does a pretty good job with a plot that's quite different from her usual.
An Atypical Inspector Allen Novel.......2002-04-22
When he is assigned to investigate a drug ring hiding behind the facade of a cult religion in the south of France, Inspector Allen elects to combine business with pleasure: he will take his wife Troy and their son Ricky along, allowing them to vacation in the area while he works. But circumstances override his intentions when an Englishwoman on their train suffers an attack of appendicitus requiring immediate surgery, the Allens agree to take charge of her, and the only qualified surgeon in the area is one working with the drug ring. Allen's cover is quickly blown, and in order to distract him from further investigation the drug ring members kidnap his child.
SPINSTERS IN JEOPARDY is quite unlike most Marsh novels for it is not a mystery per se; the criminals are immediately apparent, and although there is a somewhat covert mystery afoot Marsh relies almost exclusively upon suspense and her knack for creating vividly-painted characters to substain interest. While this is certainly enough to make the novel entertaining, it is not enough to make this particular novel--the plot of which relies on coincidence upon coincidence--as memorable as her other work. Even so, the book is quite enjoyable in a Hitchcockian sort of way, reminding one a bit of the director's THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. Agatha Christie fans will also recognize that Marsh has borrowed a device from Christie's THE 4:50 FROM PADDINGTON, in which a passenger unexpectedly witnesses a murder through a train window. A pleasant read, but not among the first rank of Marsh novels.

An incredibly helpful tool.......2006-11-08
Dr. Hall's book is one for which I have been waiting. It provides a tool for an all to common problem among women who when finding themselves in this situation tend to blame themselves. It is not a blaming book, but more of a normalizing experience (this can happen to anyone given the demands of day to day life). She then provides the reader with a practical guide for improving their own sexual self. As a therapist I highly recommend this book to clients and as a woman's advocate I applaud her ability to direct her work toward women without a hint of blame just an empathic expertise.
Excellent reading for men too........2006-09-23
I just finished reading it and thought it was very informative and helpful. You are absolutely right in that this is stuff people do not learn about but really do need to know. I think if more people read this book there would be less unhappy relationships and divorces. I think it is extremely valuable reading for men too. It really helped me to understand the dynamics and issues in a relationship from both view points. As Habit #5 of THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE states, "Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood". This book has really helped me to do this.
I recommend this book for anyone serious about making and keep their relationship as good as it can be.
A Guide That's Insightful And Helpful.......2005-06-09
Dr. Hall is clearly a very bright and talented therapist. Her ideas and counsel are things that are not only thought-provoking, but that I was able to actually use to improve my interaction with my husband. While not always easy because there's real honesty and work involved, the book was incredibly helpful for my relationship -- which was, frankly, a surprise given how little many books of this sort offer. Dr. Hall's book is insightful, has been beyond beneficial to my sense of self -- not just my sense of my own sexuality -- and has been worth infinitely more than the modest price.
Another book on how to fix women.......2005-06-03
Ms. Hall could have written a more interesting book titled: "The Sexual Socialization of Males and How it Contributes to the Epidemic of Diminshed Libido in Women", instead, once again, the onus is placed on the woman to "fix" her low libido, while the sexually abusive culture she exists within, remains the same. Maybe lost libido is natures healthy response to the culture we live in, which does more to harm a woman's sexual development than help it. Not only do women have to deal with objectification, negative cultural messages about their intrinsic worth and purpose, as well as the threat of rape, but they should have a robust libido in the midst of all this. Ridiculous.
Low sexual desire is not a disease!.......2004-08-19
This book is truly great. My boyfriend and I used to fight about sex a lot. I was convinced there was something wrong with me. After reading this book, I no longer felt like I had some kind of disease. My boyfriend and I read sections together, it was fun to read, very reassuring and I followed many of the suggestions Dr. Hall gave for getting desire back. And they worked! I highly recommend this book to everyone in a relationship - don't wait until the fighting about sex gets bad, read this book now.

It is so refreshing to have a book that includes both a great deal of content and beautiful full color pictures alike!
Russ Gurley has done a fabulous job of putting together a ton of information in an easy to find, easy to understand, enjoyable to read book!
He covers all of the fundamental care requirements for turtles with helpful details concerning enclosures, feeding, lighting and more for both indoor and outdoor keepers. The first 100 pages make a complete book all by themselves providing all of the essential information, but he goes further anyway!
The remaining, almost 200 pages, dedicate themselves to over 50 different species individually explaining each of their unique needs and breeding habits.
Whether you are a brand new turtle owner, or an experienced owner seeking to expand your library, this book is worthy. Just buy it... you wont regret it!

I own many turtle books, but this one is truly outstanding and is in my "most used" category..... a cornucopia of practical information that is well-written, well-presented and well-researched. There is stuff here that you'd have to combe through an entire library to find otherwise. I commend this text to all keepers, from beginner to professional. It has been called the "bible of turtle keeping" for good reason - there is no better single volume source of accurate information available. The author is founder of the Tortoise Trust, one of the world's leading turtle conservation and education organizations, and is known for numerous contributions to our knowledge on this topic. Without doubt, this is the most useful, practical turtle book I own, and I urge other keepers not to pass it by! There are some awful books on turtles out there, and they can get your animal's killed... this one is quite the opposite, and it has certainly saved many of my own animals. Excellent.

Highfield presents a great deal of information in a logical, readable manner. The book includes many color photographs which are helpful in species identification. That's what this book is for any dollhouse collector. If it is true that dollhouses are addictive and you can't have just one, Vivian Greene lives up to that ideal. Her rescue of antique dollhouses from the dustbins of Britain sparked a dollhouse revival that spread to the US and around the world. Yet the book is not full of the grandious rooms of Queen Mary's Dollhouse or Colleen Moore's. It is full of objects and ideas that are well within the reach of the serious and even not so serious collector, as well as period design authentic to each era. Mrs. Greene's dollhouse collection begins with a 17th century dollhouse and continues up to when dollhouses began to be commercially produced. Each is a one of a kind historical artifact. This is my favorite dollhouse book bar none.

As a new and inexperienced gardener, I found this book to be very helpful when planning my small garden. The language is very clear and easy to understand, especially for people who are unfamiliar with basic garden terminology. In addition to planting tips, there are sections devoted to all the different types of plants, flowers, and shrubs. Each spread contains basic information about various plants, including information on when and where to plant them, specific planting instructions and a "TLC" section for each plant. There are also beautiful color photos of hundreds of different plants and suggestions on which plants make great garden companions. I'm very glad that I have this book to help me along during my adventures in gardening!

Maier does a good job putting Christmas and Easter into their appropriate historical contexts. Lots of good information that helps to place both into perspective.
The third part of the book, on the early church, is not as well done. There is less historical and archaelogical information brought into play. It was still pretty good, just not as good as the first two sections.
Still, I would recommend this book as one to help build a foundation.
A Christian history teacher's review.......2007-05-14
Paul Maier is a truly gifted lecturer. I've had the pleasure of watching two of his videos and if I lived anywhere near Western Michigan University, I'd sneak into the back of his classroom (he is a member of the history faculty there) on a regular basis - he has a gift for making the First Century A.D. accessible.
"In the Fullness of Time" continues this tradition. Maier has basically consolidated 3 other books into one larger volume (with a few changes) and he discusses the first Christmas, the first Easter and the ministries of the early Apostles, especially Paul and Peter.
Maier does a great job of bringing actual documentation that supports the stories of Christmas, Easter and the Book of Acts. He includes the works of Roman and Jewish historians, explains Roman and Jewish religious and political practices and deals with alternate theories that have been proposed. While this could be dry reading, Maier makes it lively and this volume reads more like a novel than a textbook.
So, who is this book for? If you are a well-read Christian who has looked into many of the facts that back the New Testament as it is written on your own, you won't find much new ground covered in this book. The internet has lots of this information scattered about. However, you are unlikely to find sources as concise and as well-written as this one. Plus, if you are interested in further research, it is well-documented with tons of footnotes.
If you are a new Christian or are newly interested in the history behind Christianity, this is a powerful introduction.
I give this one a grade of "A"
Surprisingly historical .......2006-07-30
Maybe it's because I enjoy reading historical literature... or maybe I am facinated by the notion the Gospel accounts are historical in nature. Paul Maier has done a wonderful job combining backround historical context, archeological artifacts, and a clear logical approach into a credible and refreshing look at what is was like to: experience the first Christmas, the first Easter, and what it was like for the early Christians after the resurrection. This is surprisingly enjoyable read.
A Must read........2005-05-20
Pail Maier, a expert in ancient history, has written a great book. from my understanding is that, this book was three different books now put into one. If you are a new Christian, you need this book. If you read this book as a new believer, you will have a better grasp of the background of the NT in reading this book, than going to a expositional preaching church for two years. It will lay a great foundation for your walk with the living Christ. If you a long time believer, and have not read this book, you should, for it will open your eyes, to the NT. Dr. Maier goes into the Christmas story, Easter Sunday and the early church. Great book.
Interesting, non-biased work by a scholar of ancient history.......2002-03-14
When I saw Paul Maier interviewed in a documentary on the life of Jesus, I searched for titles by this author, and when this book was listed, I immediately ordered it. I wasn't dissappointed.
Maier is a professor of ancient history at Western Michigan, and brings credibility and scholarship to a subject that is frequently approached with bias, often from polar perspectives. Professor Maier is one of the leading scholars on the writings of first century Jewish historian Josephus, and this book includes appropriate and informative references to this ancient source. As a student of history and an attorney, I found the book stimulating and thought provoking. However, the book most certainly does not read like a history text, and is interesting to both the historian and the person simply looking for some information on the historical context of the birth of Christ, his crucification and the biblical account of his resurrection. The book also examines the early church and the spread of Christianity. Anyone with an interest in these topics should read this work.
I very much recommend this book, and look forward to reading other works by Paul Maier.

This autobiography by Paul Douglas is one of the finest and most thought-provoking books I have ever read. I am politically quite conservative, but I came to greatly admire and respect the arch-liberal Paul Douglas. He was, essentially, the John McCain of his day. His World War II experiences alone make him an extraordinary man; yet there were many, many other aspects of his life that set him apart. I urge everyone to get this book and discover a most amazing man.

I'm so glad I received this book back in December. It was a true confirmation about the glory of God and being in His presence. I highly recommend it if you're serious about having a VERY intimate relationship with Him. It's a book that was before its time.

Faith is a fine enough thing, but this is the sort of book in which faith is used as a trump card to gloss over even the most painful processes and events, cheapening and simplifying them -- a recurring theme in the author's work.

A very good read. I am excited to see what the Lord is doing in the church in this hour!!! God is preparing the church for HIS Glory and Francis Frangipane does an excellent job with fantastic insights on what is yet to come for the church. This book will take you to a new level of focus. I know many Christians whose only objective is being raptured out of here, but I believe after reading this book people will be really moved to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to bring change as God brings us back to our "first love" so that the power that began in the early church talked about in the book of Acts will be manifested in this hour. I am so excited in the Lord. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to elevate their thinking about the church today. Get Ready!!!!!

I have enjoyed Francis Frangipanes's books as he was the first author to bring my heart to its knees. God has used him to bring hearts to a new level of realization that things have got to change around here. We have got to focus on our hearts because they will set our destiny. When the Lord sets our hearts right, and when we look up, we see a new destiny: This book of Frangipane details an overwhelming vision he had of heavenly beings, saints, and the overpowering presence of the Lord Himself. Frangipane reveals to those of us who are looking toward the Second Coming: His Presence has started coming in waves.
